D'Backs To Release Eric Byrnes This Winter?
2009-09-23 15:44:00
Scott Bordow of the East Valley Tribune suspects that the Diamondbacks will consider cutting ties with Eric Byrnes this offseason and would be willing to eat the final year of his three-year, $30MM contract. Arizona's outfield is set for 2010, and it doesn't include the injury-plagued Byrnes. Conor Jackson will start in left field, Chris Young is expected to start in center and Justin Upton will play right. Gerardo Parra, after a fine rookie campaign in 2009, will operate as the fourth outfielder but should find regular playing time.D'Backs GM Josh Byrnes will certainly try to work out a trade before simply releasing the 33-year-old outfielder, who has played just 76 games this year due to a fractured hand, but it might be hard to find a team willing to take on his salary. "The Diamondbacks will take a lot of grief if they release Byrnes," concludes Bordow. "But it would be the right thing to do."
MRI reveals two strained hamstrings for Eric Byrnes (AP)
2008-05-31 08:36:00
Arizona manager Bob Melvin said Friday night that left fielder Eric Byrnes has two strained hamstrings. An MRI exam revealed the leg injuries. The Diamondbacks placed the slumping Byrnes on the 15-day disabled list on Monday. His return is uncertain. “It’s pretty consistent with what we thought,” Melvin said. Read the full story.

NLCS: The Improbable Match-up [J. Mark English]
2007-10-11 19:40:00
As of yesterday there was something like 8,000 tickets available to the D'backs vs. Rockies NLCS. It just shows how little interest there is in this bout. It also is an indication of just how low the expectations were for both of these ball clubs. The Diamondbacks are probably less of the surprise team here. They have solid pitching, and gutsy hitting...the same kind of combo that helped the Cardinals win the World Series last year. They are a scrappy team. The Rockies may be the beneficiaries of an off season discovery. Before the season, the Rockies ground crew realized that the baseballs in the high altitude would dry out, causing great lift in the ball. Combine this with the light air, and you have a ball that will travel a lot farther then at any other ball park. They decided to humidify the balls up until game day, keeping them nice and moist by the first pitch. The added density helped keep the ball in the park more often then not, and finally the Rockies were able t...

Diamondbacks Sign Byrnes To Extension
2007-08-07 19:31:00
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have reached an accord with outfielder Eric Byrnes in the $30MM over three years.  Piecoro believes that the fallout of the deal will be a trade of right fielder Carlos Quentin. Byrnes, 31, can play all three outfield positions.  He's having the best season of his career, hitting .303/.365/.497 while shuffling between the first four spots in the batting order.  Long-term, it looks like the Diamondbacks plan on using Byrnes in left field, Chris Young in center, and Justin Upton in right.  It's possible Young and Upton will swap positions, but you really can't go wrong either way. Was Byrnes worth it?  PECOTA would say no, instead valuing Byrnes closer to the Diamondbacks' original offer of $22.5MM.  However, Josh Byrnes ultimately decided to spend the extra $7.5MM to retain one of the team's veteran leaders and popular players.  And 3/30 is undoubtedly a below-market deal given...
Byrnes Extension Seems Unlikely
2007-07-19 17:43:00
It seems unlikely that the Diamondbacks will sign 31 year-old outfielder Eric Byrnes to a contract extension.  According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the team won't even approach Juan Pierre's five-year, $45MM deal.  And Juan Pierre isn't good. It's just the business reality - the Diamondbacks have way too much outfield talent in their system to give Byrnes anything near what he's worth.  He'd probably have to take something like two years, $20MM to remain in Arizona.  Earlier I said 4/32 might do it but now I'm thinking even that wouldn't work.  I still like him as a possible White Sox next year. Piecoro also mentioned that Josh Byrnes inquired on Bobby Abreu and Jermaine Dye, but is backing off because Carlos Gonzalez was requested.  Buster Olney proposes Shannon Stewart as a lower-cost alternative.
Is Eric Byrnes a "Lemon?"
2007-06-28 21:04:00
Taking a Look at whether Eric Byrnes is a "lemon" His owners can only say WOW at this point; what a first half of a season! In an earlier post I discussed the trading of "lemons" for "cherries." One type of lemon is a guy who is far outperforming his typical standards. So, is Eric Byrnes a "lemon?" As you may know from my prior posts, Byrnes' owner has been shopping him all around the league, and has just posted another trade for him (the prior one discussed in the post about Failing To Have a Plan was successfully countered.)His stats to date are tremendous; 12 HR 42 RBI 14 SB .313/.360/.510. He is in the Top Ten on playertrack.com (see Rob Reed's BaseballGeeks site). Clearly this is an outstanding performance. But it is not one that is likely to continue, at least in the "slash" stats.According to The Hardball Times, his BABIP is a lusty .343, the norm is .300. Career wise, his hit rates and contact rates are as follows:2003: 29% Hit Rate 81% Contact Rate2004: 32%-83%2005: 25%-8...
