Brewers pull Eric Gagne from closer?s role (AP)
2008-05-11 22:00:00 The Brewers yanked Eric Gagne from the closer’s role on Sunday after the reliever called his latest performance embarrassing and said he didn’t feel he deserved to pitch the ninth anymore. Manager Ned Yost said he read Gagne’s comments and will use a closer by committee approach while Gagne takes what Yost called a “mental ...

The Closer Continuum: Slovenly Eric Gagne, Calling Myself Out
2008-05-06 04:15:00 First of all, I need to call myself out: last week, during a discussion of Gary Sheffield as a buy-low candidate, I claimed that “Jim Leyland will continue to insert him in the three-hole until he can?t play.” One week later, the Detroit Tigers lineup for tonight reads as follows: 1. Curtis Granderson, OF 2. Placido Polanco, ...

The Art of the Apology: Andy Pettitte & Eric Gagne Want Us To Forgive...
2008-02-18 23:26:00 Andy Pettitte faced the music and was asked a ton of questions to a throng of media. We all know Andy is a guy who has some great integrity, is a good guy, and whatever else; however, I should did he dupe the Yankees into giving him a huge contract and does he really feel sorry considering all the money he's made.I think he's sorry to an extent, but did he consider everything including the consequences before he was forced to give his mea culpa thanks to the Mitchell Report?***Another fine example of the art of the apology -- Eric Gagne; however, he avoids the subject. So far, Mitchell's Report has been pretty accurate

The Mitchell Report - Names, Names, and More Names
2007-12-14 07:24:00 If you?re interested, you can download the entire Mitchell Report here.If you?re from New England, you?re probably buried under a foot of snow right now. Some of us never actually made it home from work as Route 1 was?.to put it nicely?a complete disaster. Yet no matter how bad of an afternoon you had, it can?t compare to the afternoon the Yankees just had.Two of their best players surfaced in the Mitchell Report. Two marquee players from their last championship team. Sure, they?re denying it. But it doesn?t matter. This isn?t Jose Canseco throwing out names here. This is a former US Senator. A man who was offered a nomination to the US Supreme Court. A man who went to Northern Ireland and brokered a peace deal. A man who is universally respected inside and outside of baseball.Ouch! It'll be interesting to see how Hank Steinbrenner (my new favorite baseball owner) responds. Some quick thoughts on the names that surfaced today (for the entire list, click here)?Roger ClemensIt?ll be in...
Around and Around We Go
2007-12-12 06:14:00 The "Around the Majors" section of Jon Heyman's CNNSI columns often operates as a haven for misinformation. Fully 1/3 of his latest bullet-pointed entries struck me as misleading and ill-informed, if not flat-out wrong:*The Yankees and Giants could possibly make a deal involving Hideki Matsui, one that involves either pitchers Noah Lowry or Jonathan Sanchez. But would anyone really expect Matsui to waive his no-trade clause to leave the team of his dreams?Yes. Absolutely. Matsui may like being a Yankee, but he also doesn't strike me as the type to stand in the way of a trade which both parties are eager to complete. It's also worth mentioning that many Japanese players have expressed a preference to play on the West Coast, which cuts almost half a day of off the round-trip flight to Japan. Matsui's approval isn't a sure thing, but it's certainly not ridiculous to expect him ultimately to accede to the wishes of the two teams involved. *Upon hearing that Eric Gagne got a guara...
Wise DFA'd, Brewers Look At Blalock
2007-12-11 20:57:00 UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 1:56pm: It's official, Wise has been DFA'd. If the Brewers aren't able to trade him then he'll hook on somewhere as a free agent. FROM 12-10-07 at 10:20pm: Tom Haudricourt has some quality stuff tonight, aside from the aforementioned return of Salomon. 32 year-old reliever Matt Wise is looking like a non-tender candidate for Wednesday. Eric Gagne took his uniform number. Wise hasn't been too bad while eating up relief innings the past few years. He only made a million bucks in '07. The Brewers tended to use him in low-leverage situations in 2007. Some other non-tender candidates are listed here. Haudricourt is "starting to get some vibes" that the Brewers have their eye on Hank Blalock. The 27 year-old third baseman hit .293/.358/.543 in limited duty this year. He's locked up affordably - $5.95MM in '08 and a $6.2MM club option for '09. Would Dave Bush and a decent pitching prospect cut it? showad();

Paul LoDuca and Eric Gagne Land New Teams
2007-12-11 15:28:00 I'm wondering what Met's General Manager Omar Minaya is thinking right about now? Closer Situations To Watch - Eric Gagne, Troy Percival & The Orioles
2007-12-10 20:22:00 Most of the quality free agents have signed contracts that cause tongues to wag. It is now time to begin focusing on values for the 2008 fantasy baseball season. Amongst the favorite places to find values are in the closer roles of all the teams. Typically, one can get closers all season long as injuries, trades and ineffectiveness open-up the role to those relievers pitching effectively in lesser bullpen roles. This happens every season. here are three situations to keep an eye on. Milwaukee Brewers Eric Gagne signed a one-year/$10MM contract to close games for the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2008 play-off contending season. The dollar figure says he's going to close. The contract length says the BRewers aren't convinced he'll do it for this entire season and those in the future. It is that kind of thinking that opens-up speculation about who will close if Gagne can't stay healthy for the whole season. The December favorite is the team...

Odds And Ends: Inge, Gagne, Pavano
2007-12-09 16:53:00 Couple of findings around the Internets: Drew Sharp argues that Brandon Inge should stay with the Tigers. His argument is that Inge would still get 300 or so at bats and would be playing for a surefire contender. If he was to be traded, he likely wouldn't land with a team nearly as good. Plus, with some of the injury histories of current Tigers, it might be best for Inge to wait around for playing time. Though the Rangers were interested in Eric Gagne, they were only $6 million interested. For a one-year deal with an option, there was little chance of that happening. Gagne likely would have sooner accepted the Red Sox arbitration offer. Carl Pavano will accept a minor league assignment after the Yankees release him this week. They need 40-man roster spots for Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera. They've already released Bronson Sardinha to make room for Andy Pettitte. Monte Pool dislikes the idea of the A's signing Barry Bonds. He mentions what you'd expect: The trial, his health,...

Eric Gagne and Brewers reach preliminary agreement on 10M deal (AP)
2007-12-09 05:30:00 The Milwaukee Brewers reached a preliminary agreement on a $10 million, one-year contract with free-agent reliever Eric Gagne, giving the team another option at closer after losing Francisco Cordero to free agency. Brewers Near Deal With Gagne
2007-12-09 03:52:00 UPDATE, 12-8-07 at 8:51pm: Tom Haudricourt has heard the deal might be around $10MM for one year. FROM 12-8-07 at 1:06pm: According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Brewers are nearing an agreement with free agent Eric Gagne. It'll probably be a one-year deal, which jives with what Doug Melvin has said. The move pushes newly acquired David Riske to the eighth inning, while Derrick Turnbow, Salomon Torres, and Guillermo Mota can split sixth and seventh inning duty. As far as I can tell, Gagne earned $8.5MM in 2007 ($6MM base plus $2.5MM in performance bonuses guaranteed for waiving his no-trade rights). We'll have to wait to see the terms, but my guess is that this turns out to be a shrewd signing by Melvin. Gagne will be in his comfort zone - National League, closer role. showad();

Odds and Ends: Colon, Clark, Gagne
2007-12-02 16:44:00 Random rumors, let's round 'em up. How about Bartolo Colon to the Mets? David Lennon notes that Omar Minaya sold the farm to acquire him in 2002 as the Expos' GM. Scott Lauber says Aaron Rowand is insisting on a five-year deal. He adds that the Phils have interest in Geoff Jenkins but he might be too expensive. Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller are considered untouchable, so don't look for the Tigers to make any big trades. Patrick Saunders runs down some free agents the Rockies may consider for the back end of their rotation: Tony Armas, Matt Clement, Steve Trachsel, Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings, Jon Lieber, Mark Redman, Brett Tomko, and Kip Wells. The Rays may go after Tony Clark, in large part because they're seeking leadership. Marc Topkin agrees, and also rattles off Geoff Jenkins, Brad Wilkerson, Cliff Floyd, Mike Lamb, Mark Sweeney, Corey Koskie, and Greg Nortion as other possibilities. It's expected that Eric Gagne will not accept Boston's offer o...

Today's Arbitration Decisions
2007-12-01 19:18:00 The decision whether to offer your own free agent arbitration can affect your team in two ways: you may end up retaining a player you didn't want, or you may score a draft pick or two as compensation. With that in mind let's run down the rumors regarding some Type A and B free agents. The Red Sox plan on offering arbitration to Type B Eric Gagne. Worst case scenario, they hang onto him for one more year. Best case, they get a sandwich pick. The Astros have to decide on Trever Miller and Mark Loretta. Both are Type Bs, but the Astros might not want them back. Richard Justice notes that the old Astro regime made a mistake not offering arbitration to Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. The Angels decided not to offer arby to Bartolo Colon, because the most they could give him would be a 20% pay cut. So best case scenario they could get him for one year, $11.2MM. Colon is not a Type A or B, so there's no compensation regardless. The Phils will ...

Rangers Rumors: Rogers, Gagne, Hunter
2007-11-14 04:41:00 MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has some new info regarding the Rangers' plans this offseason. Kenny Rogers has already had three separate stints with the Rangers, the last one ending with the cameraman incident. The Rangers would like to bring him back for a fourth tour, if the price is right. One emailer speculated that the team also wouldn't mind an apology to management for the incident, also. Sullivan says the Mariners, Phillies, Dodgers, and Mets may also have Rogers on the radar. Seems like Ned Colletti is letting bygones be bygones with Scott Boras. UPDATE: Boras reiterated tonight that the Tigers are Rogers' priority. He seemingly wants one year and $10MM. The Rangers have interest in another Boras client, Eric Gagne. I think I read this in ESPN Magazine recently - how about re-signing him and flipping him all over again at the '08 deadline? Owner Tom Hicks and GM Jon Daniels had dinner with Torii Hunter tonight. I heard they had the r...

A reader emailed me to tell me that Buster Olney said on XM Radio recently that there are talks of the Twins going after Scott Rolen. These reports can be tough to confirm, but there you go. UPDATE: Joe Christensen squashes this one. Mark Feinsand doesn't think Epstein is keen on giving Mike Lowell even a three-year contract. He might get five on the open market. UPDATE: The Red Sox apparently have a three-year offer out to him, and he's still mulling it over. The White Sox inquired about Bill Hall, but Kenny Williams and Doug Melvin couldn't find a match. Baseball America weighs in on the Brad Lidge trade. BP's Nate Silver gives his opinion here and here. He thinks the Phillies made a mistake. The Astros have contacted Jeremy Affeldt's agent. The Irrational Panic over Eric Gagne
2007-09-21 08:58:00 To be honest, I’ve been pretty disengaged about the fight for home field advantage in the AL East. According to our research in Baseball Between the Numbers, the home team wins a whopping 51.5% of the time in a 5-game series, and 51.3% of the time in a 7-game series, assuming that it is of equal quality to the road team; that’s what the Red Sox and Yankees are fighting for. All of the interesting baseball left to be played in the last ten days of the regular season resides in the National League. Usually, not watching a particular team’s games is a disadvantage to a baseball analyst. At other times however the 30,000-foot view can be helpful. Take for the example the case of Eric Gagne, who from reading the blogosphere and a couple messages in my inbox, would seem to be the worst idea in Boston since the Big Dig. Here is a breakdown of Gagne’s key peripheral indicators in Boston and Texas: Team K% BB% GB/FB QERA BABIP Texas 21.8% 9.0% 1.19 3.76 .236 Boston 2...

The Eric Gagne Conspiracy
2007-08-13 18:32:00 So how much money are the Yankees dumping into an off-shore account for Eric Gagne? Did Cashman have a conversation with Scott Boras saying he’d triple any offer the Red Sox were making to let Gagne pitch in Boston, BADLY? Eric Gagne is sporting a fat 15.75 ERA since joining the Red Sox, and together with his bullpen mates have jockeyed the Red Sox backward bringing the AL East lead to just 4 games. Yankee fans cringed when they saw Gagne traded to the Red Sox, but this conspiracy theory is gaining more momentum every time Gagne steps on the mound! In 33 1/3 innings with Texas, Gagne gave up only 8 ER’s and opposing hitters hit just .192 against him - in just 4 innings he’s blown two 8th inning leads allowing opposing hitters to hit .455 against him and is one ER shy of tying his Texas mark in 29 less innings! For the same reason women don’t look under the hood, maybe Theo shouldn’t have been tinkering with the big red engine that could! GO RED SOX!!

Eric Gagne: Boston's Newest Chump
2007-08-13 06:15:00 Eric Gagne has been nothing but a disappointment in Boston. Gagne has not had a clean inning yet with the Sox and has blown two saves. In effect, Gagne has cost the Red Sox two games in the standings, allowing the hated Yankees to be just 4 games back of the team that currently has baseball's best record. This sounds awful, but many Red Sox fans are glad that Kason Gabbard left his third start with Texas due to an injury. Since that injury, I stopped cursing the name of Theo Epstein for acquiring Gagne. I've Had Quite Enough of Your Lip
2007-08-05 23:46:00 If you had asked for my opinion yesterday, I would have told you that Mike Lupica's "Shooting from the Lip" column in the NY Daily News should be one of the last destinations for any sports fan in search of informative, impartial analysis (nobody asked). But his latest offering only confirms my earlier assessment. Without further adieu, let the shootout begin:Roger Clemens has started the same number of games and made the same number of appearances this season as Kei Igawa. To this point Clemens has one more victory than Igawa to show for all that. Look on the bright side, though. At least the Yankees haven't had to farm The Rocket back out yet.And why is that, exactly? If Clemens has only one win more than Igawa, and Igawa has been demoted to the minor leagues for the second time this season, shouldn't Clemens be knocking on Scranton's door himself? Could it be because judging a pitcher solely by his win-loss record is idiotic? Clemens' 4.23 ERA isn't setting any records, but...
Yankees to Introduce Joba Chamberlain to Bullpen
2007-08-03 02:21:00 Though the Yankees long-term plans continue to envision Joba Chamberlain as the team's future No. 5 starter, expect the prized prospect to soon be quietly eased into the majors as a member of the bullpen. The Yankees will follow a strategy successfully used by the Twins, who have traditionally worked young hurlers into the rotation gradually. As such, Chamberlain's arrival from the minors is widely thought to be imminent, though he may not appear as a starter until next spring.Such players in the past would have found themselves on the trading block, but general manager Brian Cashman has resisted offers to trade Chamberlain for immediate help for the team's playoff run.Cashman's estimations of Chamberlain's potential are so high that he spurned Rangers offers to trade veteran closer Eric Gagne for him, even though the decision meant Gagne would go to the arch rival Red Sox.The 20-year-old, 2006 supplemental round pick (46th overall) throws a high-90's fastball that can hit trip...

Sports Fashion Trends That Disappeared
2007-08-02 16:12:00 Fashion trends come and go in America and around the world. The same can be said in the world of sports. Looks are continually evolving and what some players and athletes used to wear now looks out of place. That said, let's take a look at some of the more prominent sports fashions of the past.Goggles The goggle. These were most prominent in basketball, and were popularized by players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Horace Grant. Now, with contact lenses and laser eye surgery more accessible than ever, the goggle is almost non-existent. There is one staunch supporter of this look still around, though, in the person of reliever Eric Gagne, now of the Red Sox.Gold Chains Big, fat gold chains were all the rage for athletes in the 1980's and early 1990's. Failed Trades
2007-08-01 19:17:00 Let's take a look at some deals that almost happened yesterday. Kyle Farnsworth for Bob Wickman. This would've been fun, reunions with former teams for both players. However, the Braves wanted the Yankees to pick up all of Farnsworth's salary, apparently. Brian Cashman didn't want to make him go away that badly, and Wickman would probably be a nonfactor back in the AL. Mariners acquire Mark Loretta. Eh. Let's not overstate the abilities of Loretta. It sounds like Tim Purpura wanted some kind of legitimate prospect for him. Rockies send Jeff Baker and others to Tampa Bay for Dan Wheeler. We can't really evaluate this one without knowing who else would've been involved. And the Rays don't really have a place to play Baker; they're already squeezed finding playing time for Jonny Gomes. If Rocco Baldelli ever gets healthy they'll really have a pickle. I mentioned in a recent interview at D-Rays Bay - Wheeler would pro...

Who Needs Eric Gagne, Anyway? Phillies At Cubs 7:05 CDT
2007-07-31 22:50:00 Not us. Oh sure, he might speak French and strike lots of people out and save lots of games, but where's the fun in that? What about the heart palpitations and adrenaline-induced cold sweat that we all get when OUR closer loads up the bases in the bottom of EVERY SINGLE NINTH? What fun is baseball when you KNOW your closer is going to slam the door on the other team? How much fun is wondering whether Eyre or Wuertz or Ohman is going to blow it if we have someone like Gagne in the pen? Besides, Gagne probably doesn't even have a superhero identity. Give me our sucky, instable bullpen any day of the week. At least I'll be entertained down the stretch, unlike Boston fans, who will have both Paperbon AND Gagne closing for them. Pffft. Try not to die of boredom. . . losers. Speaking of losers, we looked like a bunch of them last night. But then, who wants to make up a measly half game, anyway? Red Sox Acquire Eric Gagne
2007-07-31 21:56:00 UPDATE: According to NESN's Tom Caron, Gagne has agreed to come to Boston and will serve as the setup man. UPDATE: Third player going to Texas, according to Buster Olney. That would be 17 year-old five-tool outfielder Engel Beltre. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox are the winner of the Eric Gagne sweepstakes pending Gagne's consent and a review of medical records. Rosenthal says Gagne might share the closer role with Jonathan Papelbon; it would not be shocking to see Papelbon become the setup man for the rest of the year. That would be a hell of a 1-2 punch regardless and a huge asset for the playoffs. Rosenthal says Kason Gabbard is one of the two players going to Texas in the deal. Jayson Stark thinks David Murphy is the other player, but it's far from confirmed. The Red Sox still need to talk to Gagne and Scott Boras.

Eric Gagne to the Red Sox?
2007-07-31 21:37:00 Baseball prospectus is holding a chat. The panel consists of John Perrotto, Kevin Goldstein, Nate Silver and Christina Kahrl. I'd expect some interesting last-minute stuff to be offered. So far, the team has affirmatively stated that Eric Gagne is going to the Red Sox for Kason Gabbard and some low-level prospects and answered a follow-up question about Gagne's new role. Ken Rosenthal confirms this is likely to occur. I can't say I like it for the Rangers pending further information, but the Red Sox win big-time by getting him for Kason Gabbard. Keeping him from the Yankees at that price is a no-brainer. Brian Cashman better hope Alan Horne wins 10 games for the Yankees next season.

Yankees Discouraged On Gagne, Cubs Still In?
2007-07-31 18:54:00 UPDATE: Peter Abraham confirms that the Yankees seem unlikely for Gagne. He says the Red Sox are offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard, while the Cubs are still quietly involved. Not sure whether Gagne would have to consent to a trade to the Cubs, but he could be used as their closer without a major uprising. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees aren't liking their chances to get Eric Gagne. That might mean he's going to the Red Sox, Mets, or Brewers, or that he's staying put. The Mets don't seem likely given some previous reports and the Rangers' demand for Carlos Gomez. The Red Sox would probably give up David Murphy and the Brewers would surrender Tony Gwynn Jr. If the Rangers would settle for Gwynn, a deal could happen quickly because Gagne cannot veto a trade there. However, he can block a move to Boston and that would present another obstacle. Speaking of the Red Sox, Rosenthal sees their chances for Jermaine Dye faded....

2007-07-31 18:50:00 UPDATE: You can throw Conor Jackson into the mix along with Quentin. Yahoo's Tim Brown has some new rumors and info: Plan B if the Red Sox can't get Eric Gagne: Washington's Chad Cordero. It seems Wily Mo Pena would be a part of that, but I imagine Jim Bowden would want a top prospect as well. The Diamondbacks are shopping Carlos Quentin for a starting pitcher; the Indians and Nationals have interest. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Indians are willing to deal Cliff Lee, so maybe there's a match there. And keep in mind that former Diamondbacks Director of Scouting Mike Rizzo now works as the Nationals' Assistant GM and VP of Baseball Operations. Rizzo still has a lot of Arizona connections, and he definitely loves Quentin. Interestingly, Will Carroll indicates that Justin Upton may be on the verge of a callup.

MLB Trade Rumors by Ken Rosenthal - Eric Gagne, Joe Blanton, Troy Glaus
2007-07-31 18:10:00 With five hours remaining until the trade deadline, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal has just updated his column with what may be the last round of rumor updates today. There are several interesting names contained in it. (That shouldn't be surprising given any info will expire with the trade deadline, so why not be all-in right now?) Amongst those rumors is the availability of Blue Jays' 3B Troy Glaus for "a substantial return". I see no reason he couldn't fetch a package similar to the one Texas received for Mark Teixeira. There is a longer explanation of the talks between the Dodgers and A's for starting pitcher Joe Blanton. Most surprising? The A's were willing to accept no major league players. Mr. Rosenthal writes the Yankees won't include any pitcher of substance, including AA starter Alan Horne, in a Gagne deal. But he does bring-up a solid alternative - AAA centerfielder Brett Gardner. Some where in the synapses of my mind, I re...

Trade Rumors - Yankees, Eric Gagne, Seattle Mariners, MLB
2007-07-31 16:08:00 Very soon, all this morning's reporting in the various local papers will be moot. As a result, I am "dumping" every rumor I have glommed from each of them this morning. Right now, I am expecting to see the Mariners make a deal, and it will likely involve a highly-regarded prospect for an aging player. I also have every expectation that middle relievers will be sent packing as the are considered replacable and do not offer much help for losing teams. However, if Jim Bowden's offer of Jon Rauch for Cameron Maybin is typical, then all bets are off. Across the nation ex-Texas and New York, there are asides everywhere that the Rangers will send closer Eric Gagne to the Yankees. Is that because it is more logical to deal him there because he cannot exercise his no-trade clause? The local New York papers claim the Yankees won't deal anything of value for anyone's players. That mitigates my pie-in-the-sky conjecture of Kyle Farnsworth and AA st...

Yankees To Pass On Gagne?
2007-07-30 16:19:00 Jon Heyman wrote yesterday that the Yankees appeared to be the frontrunner for Texas closer Eric Gagne, given the Yanks' need and Gagne's lack of veto power. However, today Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger says the Yankees' involvement on Gagne is exaggerated. Apparently the Rangers wanted Melky Cabrera in return. Joba Chamberlain has been switched to relief at Triple A; he could be 90% of Gagne without the cost.

Trade Rumors - New York Yankees, Eric Gagne, Joba Chamberlain, Alan Horne
2007-07-30 16:18:00 With one more night to go until the non-waiver trading deadline ends, we should be near the peak of the trade rumor frenzy. Because of that, I am including a bevy of chats today in hopes of uncovering a piece of intelligence I could use to my benefit over the remaining two months of the fantasy season. Of particular interest is the report from the New York Post that the Rangers' Eric Gagne cannot veto a trade to either the Yankees or the Mets. If there is a crack in the public front the Rangers have put-up about extending Gagne rather than trading him, then the Yanks could be a good fit. [The Yankees] have relented some on Alan Horne, a pitcher who some in the organization think can be a No. 3 starter and others see using his above-average fastball/curve duo as a set-up man. This might come down to how Texas values Horne, or other arms such as Tyler Clippard, Jeff Marquez and Chase Wright. The Mets are monitoring to see if the price falls. And the Red Sox are interested...
