Erie County Flaccid Stability Board
2009-06-03 15:10:00 The Erie County Fiscal Stability Board has found the Collins Administration's proposed 4-year plan to be acceptable enough to justify it entering into advisory mode, commonly referred to as going from a "hard" to a "soft" control board. In other words, the control board has determined that county government's wild-ass ...

Erie County Planning Board: a 2009 Campaign Issue
2009-04-23 14:03:00 A few years ago, a Regional Framework for Regional Growth was drafted and approved. Let's face it - Buffalo and Erie County are not planned in any sort of cohesive fashion. Erie County 2008: Surplus. Wait, what?
2009-02-20 08:09:00 That's what they're saying - that the county ended 2008 with a $5-ish million surplus. Well, I'll be damned. Now if the control board would get the hell out of the way and let the county do its capital and RAN borrowing without a perpetual battle, that'd be ...

The Erie County Legislature Finds Unanimity
2009-02-01 07:29:00 Nothing unites the legislature like the control board's malicious bumbling and stumbling, nor the hamhanded and arrogant incompetence of the Collins administration with respect to the tax bill fiasco. 2008-12-13 18:14:00 Shameful of me… I stuck this into a ‘holding’ pile… our of sight, out of mind.Sunset, Lake Erie State Park, 2008 Josef Velena in feedback, about a week or so back: Hi, I just wanted to tell you about a new site that I am working on: http://www.recreationparks.net/- Using USGS data, I’ve added records for over 60,000 parks. Here is the link for a park you have written about - Lake Erie State Park: http://www.recreationparks.net/-NY/chautauqua/lake-erie-state-p-ark-brocton If you like the site, it would be really cool if you could mention it in your blog. I think your other readers would find it useful, and the more people who fill out the activity information about local parks, the more comprehensive the site will be. I would also love any suggestions that you have for new features for the site! I’ve seen the site, it’s a nice effort, worth a look, particularly if you’re an RV’er. I’m sure Josef would be interested in yo...

Westminster FSC of Erie: Celebrating 50 years
2008-04-07 06:24:00 Fifty years is a long time for a club to exist and be successful! Just ask Dottie Vassar, one of the founders as well as the first president of Westminster FSC of Erie. In 1958, Dottie, along with others in the Erie area, started the club to promote greater interest in figure skating in the Erie area, in the hopes that one day, the need for an artificial rink would be realized. The club's members skated outdoors on Dauphin Park Pond from 1959 to 1963 (see below right, Dottie is far left), with the club paying boys and girls $1/hour to clear the snow from the pond! In 1964, their dream was realized when construction was completed on the J.M. Cochran Ice Arena. The club has been a member of United States Figure Skating since 1965 and Dottie, now at age 88, continues to be actively involved in the club's success. In addition to being an active board member, Dottie attends Professional Skaters Association seminars, coaches, and runs the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills program. The ...

Lake Erie UFOs Are Stars on YouTube
2008-01-14 20:56:00 Waves of UFO sightings over the waters of Lake Erie are earning the great lake a reputation as a UFO hot spot. But the lake's new popularity may have more to do with a string of popular videos on YouTube than sightings of little green men."It's a hot spot," declares local ufologist Aaron Clark about the beaches of Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio. "Some believe there's a UFO base on the bottom of the lake."While not yet rivaling UFO hot spots like Mexico City or Phoenix, Lake Erie has generated enough buzz that news and documentary filmmakers are taking notice. Several Lake Erie UFO videos have made the national news, and The History Channel is airing a segment on Lake Erie UFOs, due to air in February. There have been more than 20 credible UFO sightings in the area in the last two years, according to Clark, a spokesman for the Cleveland Ufology Project, one of the oldest UFO-spotting groups in the country."There's a pattern here," says Sam Phillips, a musician who filmed a UFO hov...
