Bedard Likely Staying Put
2008-07-18 19:18:00
With the Philadelphia Phillies acquisition of Joe Blanton the Seattle Mariners lost potentially their best suitor for ailing ace Erik Bedard’s services.  Bedard is currently on the 15-day DL and was delayed on returning to Seattle after the All-Star break, meaning he’ll only get a single start before the July 31st trade deadline if healthy.  Pair ...

A lot of us thought it absurd that Richie Sexson was let go before the even more useless Jose Vidro, but it seems order is slowly returning to the universe.  This from Prospect Insider’s sidebar: There are some rumors starting to swirl around the team as they left Kaufmann Stadium today that designated hitter Jose Vidro’s ...

Will Erik Bedard Be Traded?
2008-06-10 11:51:00
Buster Olney says it as well as anyone else could. Mariners' GM Bill Bavasi would be fired before he could deal Bedard. Why allow him to make the decision to deal for him and then let him try to erase the mistake? What makes anyone think he wouldn't compound that mistake with another?"Seattle fired its hitting coach. The Mariners got some temporary relief, in extra innings, as Ryan Divish writes. John McGrath thinks that the Mariners should consider swapping Erik Bedard. Interesting thought, but in order to make this happen, Bill Bavasi would have to effectively wave the white flag and acknowledge that giving up the package for Bedard was a mistake -- and that would be a very difficult thing to do less than four months into the season."
Erik Bedard Speculation
2008-06-09 13:22:00
So far, we haven't read any actual rumors suggesting the Mariners will shop Erik Bedard.  However, it's become a prevalent discussion topic among the team's beat writers.  John McGrath even suggests Phillies GM Pat Gillick should acquire Bedard as his last hurrah.  The Phils do have a history of interest in the lefty. Though they don't get much press, the Phillies have three Top 100 prospects in Carlos Carrasco, Adrian Cardenas, and Joe Savery.  Gillick could certainly pull off a trade, though it's interesting to note that the Phils have used the same five starters all year. Almost half the teams in baseball had interest in Bedard last winter.  That list has narrowed, but there should be healthy competition for his services if the Mariners make him available.  I wonder if Bill Bavasi would get to call the shots this time around.
McLaren Blows Up: What Must Erik Bedard Be Thinking?
2008-06-05 17:25:00
Ah, Erik Bedard, perhaps he might now regret going to Seattle and not staying with Baltimore. As for us, man, does Andy MacPhail look more like a genius each and every day.I feel for Mariners fans, this deal has needless to say not worked out in their favor. Now Seattle skipper John McLaren has blown a gasket, and his tirade now will perhaps inspire -- however, not likely -- they're simply not a good team.Oh boy, what will happen next?
Erik Bedard And Pedro Martinez Injury Update
2008-04-16 21:27:00
Once again, Baseball Prospectus has provided the scrambled porn version of Will Carroll's Under The Knife Column for those who can't afford to subscribe.  The latest injury updates for Seattle Mariners' LHP Erik Bedard and New York Mets' Pedro Martinez are above the subscriber fold - to mix metaphors.  There are several others including Will's revelation about why he tabbed Manny Acosta as the Braves closer last week along with updates on Randy Johnson and Alfonso Soriano. When "torn labrum" and a pitcher of Erik Bedard's importance are paired together, ears perk.  There doesn't seem to be anywhere near the level of concern that pair elicits though, but I am nervous - and I don't own Bedard on any of my fantasy rosters. Pedro Martinez doesn't bother me as much because I never really believed in him.  Maybe that is because my local papers are New York ones and the endless drama of Pedro over the past three years are become tiresome.  Maybe it was tha...

Do you think Seattle fans are happy now? If you have not heard, Erik Bedard is on the 15-day DL with a bum hip...Like some people have noticed, Bedard may be a solid pitcher; however, except for 2006, he's never been able to go without a stint at least once every season on the disabled list.I wish the lad a lot of luck, but Seattle gave up a lot and for their sake, they better hope he does not become a bust.

The Seattle Mariners paid a hefty price to get Erik Bedard. So far this spring, they’ve got little to show for their investment. Erik Bedard may have left Baltimore, but the memory of his surliness and pissing off some members of the media here have not been forgotten.Well, on March 5th after a Cactus league start, Erik decided to opine this thoughts to the Seattle media - you've got to read this...From the Seattle Times:Oh man, I know this topic is going to start something. The reporters who cover the team just got back from talking to Bedard after his performance. Total time on my recorder of the interview session: 1 minute, 18 seconds. Even the security guard who let us back into the stadium knew the deal."Didn't have much to say to ya, did he?" she said.Yup, Bedard was...Bedard. He set the tone right off."You get four questions," he told the group.1. Can you tell the difference from start to start?Bedard: "No, not really. I was throwing same as last week. They just didn't hit it today."2. This is a team you're going to face a lot this year. Is there anything you can get from them the first time you'r...

Johan Santana and Erik Bedard definitely showed something in their debuts for new teams: Even baseball’s best pitchers need time to tune up in spring training. Thoughts On The Erik Bedard Trade
2008-02-08 15:37:00
The Mariners finally got their man, giving up a five-player package for two years of Erik Bedard. The Orioles did a great job, getting six years of a presumably above-average center fielder in Adam Jones.  They can use George Sherrill at closer; I believe he's under team control for three more years.  If he can rack up 30 saves, the O's can flip him for more youngsters.  And then there are three interesting pitching prospects - Chris Tillman is considered the 44th best prospect in the game by BP's Kevin Goldstein.  I've read that this is the best haul this winter when comparing the Santana and Haren trades, and I agree. Let's take a look at the effects on the Mariners, using Baseball Prospectus' Wins Above Replacement Player stat.  They suggest Jones is a five win player in '08, and a full season of Brad Wilkerson might be worth four wins.  So they lose a win in right field, while gaining six from Bedard.  I could see the loss of Sherrill co...
Erik Bedard Trade Update
2008-02-08 11:45:00
Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times says Erik Bedard's physical could carry over into today.  That means an announcement will come this afternoon at the earliest, or perhaps Saturday.  Baker also goes into some detail about 27 year-old Venezuelan baseball writer Augusto Cardenas, who helped start this debacle. For a change of pace, think of the human element to this story.  It'll make it more interesting.  Read SI.com's recent profile on Bedard.  Anyone who breaks up the day with a few rounds of RBI Baseball is alright by me.  I think video game designers are so focused on graphics these days that they neglect gameplay.  A game like RBI Baseball is more inclusive and fun than the current stuff.  People of all ages can figure it out in two minutes and have a good time.  Isn't that the point?

Adam Jones For Erik Bedard Trade: Prospects Analysis
2008-02-05 12:17:00
With just the physicals to come-up clean, the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners are about to consumate the second-biggest trade of the off-season - LHP Erik Bedard for CF Adam Jones, LP George Sherrill and three minor league pitchers - RHP Chris Tillman, RHP Kam "The Almighty" Mickolio and LHP Tony Butler.  I expect Adam Jones to be a valuable fantasy contributor as the O's CF, and George Sherrill to enter Spring Training as the orioles' new closer. What I admit to knowing very little about are the three pitching prospects the Orioles received.  What better way is there to segue into John Sickel's The Baseball Prospect Book 2008 than with a review of each player using Mr. Sickels' assessments along with their highest 2008 minor league level. RHP Chris Tillman (High A):He has a 90-93 MPH fastball and a very good curve, and, late in the year, his command was quite good.  As long as that remains true, he has to rate as one of the better pitching prospects in the...
Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Erik Bedard
2008-02-05 12:17:00
Another one of baseball's top young lefties is about to be traded. Last week it was Johan Santana. This week it appears as if Erik Bedard is going to be traded to the Mariners for Adam Jones, a relief pitcher and three top pitching prospects. Despite rumors of a completed deal over a week ago, and worries that Peter Angelos might kill the deal, reports appear to indicate that the trade could be finalized. Any. Minute. Now. But before the deal is completed, let's take a look at reactions to the Bedard trade from the blogosphere. Camden Chat says farewell and thanks to Erik Bedard. They are now looking forward to watching the 2008 Baltimore Orioles even if the team is destined to lose 100 games. Oriole Magic thinks this entire saga has been more interesting than the regular season will turn out to be. Bleacher Report says there is no prize for finishing 4th in the AL East (tell that to Rays fans) and Peter Angelos needs to OK the deal. Detect-O-Vision compares the Johan Santana deal...
Erik Bedard Rumors
2008-02-05 09:54:00
The Erik Bedard trade has had many accompanying micro-rumors as it's dragged along.  The current micro-rumor, courtesy of Roch Kubatko of the Baltimore Sun, is that Bedard is expected to take his physical today.  I think we're all ready for an official announcement. Jeff Zrebiec says the framework has been agreed upon, and it's the players we've been discussing for the past few days.  At any rate we should have an announcement by week's end.
Erik Bedard Rumors

Larry Stone of the Seattle Times gives his take on the Erik Bedard situation.  The money quote: All current indications are that, after all the histrionics of the past week, the Mariners and Orioles will really, truly, actually, once and for all, no turning back, no mulligans, no backing out, no passing go, get this trade done. But check back tomorrow, because nothing is for certain in this messed-up deal. Stone also adds that Adam Jones was not in Baltimore for a physical on Friday, contrary to other reports.  He also gives some details about the three tall pitchers rumored to be part of the deal - Chris Tillman, Kam Mickolio, and Tony Butler.

Erik Bedard rumors/drama - here's the latest. Andy MacPhail says Peter Angelos did not nix any deal.  McPhail says trade talks are ongoing and no deals are expected today. Yesterday it was reported by MLB.com's Jim Street that the Orioles were making a last-ditch effort to sign Bedard to an extension, perhaps as long as five years.
Erik Bedard Rumors: Tuesday

UPDATE, 1-29-08 at 3:45pm: The Baltimore Sun's Roch Kubatko weighs in on a radio rumor going around.  The radio rumor says that the O's are holding up the deal over a possible degenerative hip condition with Adam Jones.  Kubatko could only confirm that the Orioles "became concerned with something related to Jones." FROM 1-29-08 at 7:50am: Why can't all megadeals be as simple as Detroit's Miguel Cabrera acquisition?  The Erik Bedard to Seattle has become a full-blown mess.  As always, MLBTradeRumors.com has the latest. Ken Rosenthal expounds on three theories as to why Orioles owner Peter Angelos may be holding up the deal.  Maybe he still wants to sign Bedard to an extension.  Maybe he's mad about Adam Jones leaking the deal to the Venezuelan press.  Or maybe he just wants more/different players than Andy MacPhail negotiated.  Or my own theory - maybe he was just busy Monday with a family matter, as has been suggested, and nothing's wrong.

Erik Bedard Rumors: Monday
2008-01-28 22:33:00
UPDATE, 1-28-08 at 8:58pm: The drama continues.  Baker believes the deal is still alive, and heard the original quotes from Jones with his own two ears.  Jones did say he was traded to the Orioles and that he was off to Baltimore for a physical, despite the KOMO 1000 backpedaling.  In other words, the Orioles asked him to kindly stop talking. Jeff Zrebiec has the latest from the Baltimore side.  The O's are holding this up over "unspecified complex issues," which might mean Angelos' approval.  Zrebiec believes the framework of a deal has been agreed upon, and that Jones was at one point scheduled to fly to Baltimore for a physical.  Zrebiec also got in touch with Mariners GM Bill Bavasi, who apparently pulled Jones from winter ball simply because he "met his goals." UPDATE, 1-28-08 at 5:46pm: According to KOMO 1000 News Radio, Jones has been ordered not to play but remains in Venezuela.  He was also misquoted by the Venezuelan press - he did no...
Does Erik Bedard a playoff team make?
2008-01-28 16:33:00
From All on the Field sports blog -- The Seattle Mariners won 88 games last season, finishing six games behind the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Southern California which is on the West Coast of the United States of America. It was a nice improvement on their 78-84 season of 2006, but the
Erik Bedard Has Been Traded!
2008-01-28 01:59:00
Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times is reporting Adam Jones is flying to Baltimore for a physical.  He grabs a direct quote from Jones thanks to a good working relationship with the Venezuelian paper Diario Panarama.  Jones says: "(Bill Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news. I've got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I'm the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners side. It's an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is. He's one of the best. Last year he finished up as arguably one of the top candidates for the Cy Young. He's that good, so for me it's an honor. You know, I like Seattle, but if I am in Baltimore, as I think now I am, I'm going to embrace it and have the best time of my life in Major League Baseball." More details later.
Erik Bedard Rumors
2008-01-25 22:38:00
The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec was able to get in touch with Erik Bedard this evening.  Bedard's quotes paint a story of his team not attempting to sign him to an extension.  He says how there are a lot more talks about trading him than signing him.  He accuses the Orioles of "playing it both ways."  Bedard is certain about one thing - he has no desire to be part of a rebuilding effort. Andy MacPhail says Bedard's agent suggested a one-year deal and denied the Orioles' multiyear overtures.  MacPhail's version sounds more accurate, given that Bedard's agent acknowledged the Orioles' "conceptual" talks about signing him through 2010. Zrebiec thinks a deal could happen next week, of course centered around Adam Jones.  The Orioles covet Chris Tillman and Carlos Triunfel as well, though Triunfel may be untouchable.
Erik Bedard Rumors
2008-01-24 08:38:00
Here's the latest on the Erik Bedard front. The Mariners are still hot on the trail of Bedard, based on comments made by GM Bill Bavasi (unless some other elite pitcher is in play suddenly).  Apparently the Orioles are holding up the deal. Meanwhile Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider (righthand sidebar) says the two sides are at an impasse.  He expects an announcement by the middle of next week, or else for Bedard to stay put.  Andy MacPhail seems to want things settled by February 13th, when pitchers and catchers report. The Reds are out of the running for Bedard.

Erik Bedard Rumors
2008-01-14 11:35:00
Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider dug up "a few fresh nuggets" regarding the Erik Bedard trade discussions. The Mariners reportedly offered Adam Jones, Jeff Clement, and George Sherrill for Bedard.  Seems the Orioles want Brandon Morrow or Carlos Triunfel instead of Clement.  One source of Churchill's believes the Mariners would be more inclined to buckle and surrender Morrow than Triunfel.  It's even possible that the Orioles gave the Mariners a "final counteroffer" including one of the two and will move on if it's rejected. Many Mariners fans believe Bedard is not even worth Jones straight up, so imagine how they'll feel if the Orioles extract significantly more. The Orioles still want Jay Bruce from Cincinnati; otherwise they would ask for a ridiculous package of pretty much everyone else worth discussing in the Reds' farm system.
Tales of the curve: an analysis of Erik Bedard
2008-01-03 07:52:00
Baltimore Orioles ace Erik Bedard had a breakout season in 2007 before being sidelined at the end of August with an injury to his oblique muscle. Prior to his final start, he was receiving strong Cy Young Award consideration with a 13-4 record, a 2.97 ERA, and a league-leading 218 strikeouts and only 135 hits ...
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, & Roger Clemens' YouTube Denial
2007-12-24 13:41:00
Dave Ortiz doesn't think his good friend Johan Santana will be joining him in Boston.  He and Johan are reported to be very good friends.  If there was somethign occuring, it is not out of the realm of possibility that Santana would drop some hints to Ortiz. However, Charlie Waters writes a Johan Santana trade is imminent.  Are these two sentences connected?  Can Yankees fans react with Christmas joy or is Mr. Waters' definition of "imminent" the question? I find it just as plausible that Mr. Waters use of the word "imminent" needs to be defined.  Santa Claus' arrival is imminent.  The New Year is imminent.  Either timeframe jibes with recent reports about when Johan Santana will be traded. * Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times doesn't put much stock in Mariners' GM Bill Bavasi's statement that Brandon Morrow will not be dealt in an Erik Bedard deal.  I agree. If reports out of Cincinnati are correct, then a Reds package led by SP Homer Bai...
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard and The New York Mets
2007-12-19 16:42:00
With rumors the Mariners are about to sign Carlso Silva to Ted Lilly money (4YR/$44MM), the Seattle Times reports the Mariners will continue to pursue an Erik Bedard trade that "would likely involve outfielder Adam Jones and a couple of other higher-grade prospects or players." The Silva signing also removes a prospect-free option for the Mets to address their rotation.  The question is how much the Mets want to add a dependable pitcher to a rotation led by John Maine, Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez.  With the new Citi Field opening in 2009, the Mets should seriously consider whether those new seats will be filled more ably by Johan Santana or Erik Bedard or Carlos Gomez/Fernando Martinez/Kevin Mulvey/Mike Pelfrey.
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejada & Brian Roberts
2007-12-11 13:49:00
Following up on my post last night about the four-player trade for Erik bedard, I checked the local papers this morning for any additional information.  The Cincinnati ones had no new baseball stories since December 9th.  However, Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun offers this update on the leading suitors for each of the Orioles' three big players. At this point, it appears the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners have emerged as the leading contenders for Bedard. The Houston Astros have been the most aggressive suitor for Tejada, and the Chicago Cubs have honed in on Roberts. While Mr. Zrebiec does not mention the specific names I heard yesterday (Joey Votto, Homer Bailey and Josh Hamilton), he does include the Reds as one of the leading suitors.  Maybe that 75% figure mentioned yesterday is as solid as it gets in the trade rumor mongering.
MLB Rumor: Erik Bedard To The Cincinnati Reds
2007-12-10 22:52:00
I just heard on XM Radios's "MLB Homeplate" that a Reds insider is 75% sure the Reds will deal Josh Hamilton, Homer Bailey and Joey Votto to the Baltimore Orioles for Erik Bedard.  The sources' estimation of likelihood seems to be as big a question as the offer itself. This would be a HR for the Orioles, who seem unlikely to be competitive in the two years they will have Bedard under contract.  Hamilton, Bailey and Votto are ready to play right now and would give the O's 17 years of control. At least there won't be any complaining about Reds manager Dusty Baker retarding the development of three young players.  Scott Hatteberg rejoice!
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, Hideki Matsui
2007-12-08 13:45:00
The baseball news is slow this Saturday morning with the two Minnesota papers showing nothing at 7:40 AM EST and the San Francisco ones dominated by Barry Bonds trial coverage.  Only the Boston and New York ones have information up about Johan Santana, Erik Bedard and Hideki Matsui.   Tom Massarotti at the Boston Herald writes the Boston Red Sox remain tight-lipped about any negotiations with the Twins over Johan Santana and do not appear willing to increase any of their offers to include two of the three marquee prospects - Jacoby Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester.  As long as the Red Sox do not budge from their position, other teams like the New York Mets and Yankees will continue to be rumored to be involved. This morning's NY Daily News leads one of its Yankees' article with this sentence:While Hank Steinbrenner acknowledges that he hasn't slammed the door on a potential blockbuster deal for Johan Santana... Granted beginning a sentence with "while" is th...
Red Sox, Blue Jays and Erik Bedard
2007-12-07 17:58:00
A note from Jayson Stark's recent column is making the rounds - that the offers the Orioles were hearing for Erik Bedard were coming from the Blue Jays and Red Sox.  Stark notes the strong improbability of Bedard being trade to a division rival. The count of teams interested in Bedard reached 11 during the crazy Winter Meetings.  The Red Sox are the 12th team.  Here's the tally: Phillies, Cardinals, Yankees, Mets, Mariners, Angels, Dodgers, D'Backs, Reds, Cubs, Red Sox, and Blue Jays.  Toss out the AL East and we're at 9.  Toss out the Phils and Cards for lack of top tier available youngsters too.  That leaves us with these 7: Mets, Mariners, Angels, Dodgers, D'Backs, Reds, and Cubs. showad();
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts
2007-12-07 12:42:00
With the Twins still unable to decide if trading one season of Johan Santana is worth potentially 20+ seasons of other less-paid players, the focus will be on Erik Bedard of the Baltimore Orioles and his more marquee teammates.  Here is what the Baltimore Sun writes-up as a summary of the team's position on dealing any of those marquee names. According to team and industry sources, MacPhail would prefer to move other pieces first, such as Tejada, and trade Roberts as the final - not the first - part of the offseason rebuilding plan. To deal Roberts, the Cubs also likely would need to part with more than just young pitcher Sean Gallagher and another prospect, according to a team source. ...a package headed by light-hitting shortstop Adam Everett and outfielder Luke Scott is not close to what it's going to take to pry Tejada from the Orioles. One team source agreed with the assessment that the Mariners have emerged as one of the front-runners to land Bedard, with young center ...

MLB Rumors: The Latest On Johan Santana and Erik Bedard (Brian Roberts, too
2007-12-06 15:38:00
My spidersense tells me the mania surrounding Johan Santana is subsiding.  Whether this is because the Twins are getting cold feet or the Red Sox offer was more bluff than real, I can't say.  Regardless, here is some of the latest information surrounding Johan Santana along with Option 1A, Erik Bedard, with a splash of a Brian Roberts trade. Gordon Edes says the Red Sox are no closer to landing Santana but qualifies that as a success as the Venezuelian did not end-up in pinstripes.  That is reasonable given the Red Sox keep the chips they offered.  At this poiint, the Yankees could say the same about Santana not landing in Boston, too. Dave Lennon believes the Mets are back in the Santana discussions and have offered a variety of packages around "outfielders Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez and pitchers Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber, combined with more secondary prospects."  Unfortunately, the Twins appear to be fixated on SS Jose Reyes being included in a...
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard and Dan Haren
2007-12-05 17:09:00
With the Johan Santan talks dragging on, attention will turn toward the Baltimore Orioles' Erik Bedard, and a couple of pitcher from the Oakland A's.  Here is some of the latest information on both fronts. Jeff Zrebiec and Dan Connolly reports there has been no change since Monday in talks dealing with Erik Bedard.  GM Andy MacPhail says there are a handful of teams who could meet the teams desire for young players.  Amongst them are the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds. John Fay writes the Reds' GM Wayne Krivsky may be willing to part with SP Homer Bailey in a deal for a high-end starting pitcher (read: Erik Bedard and Dan Haren).  If so, then this could be a surprise entry into the High Roller Starting Pitcher Sweepstakes.  The Reds do have some pieces with josh hamilton and Edwin Encarnacion who could combine with Bailey to make an attractive package. Geoff Baker reports the Mariners appear to ...
