Should Ernie Fletcher and Bill Nighbert be Investigated?
2008-01-18 03:00:00 I understand the cliche live and let live, especially after a successful election. But when your desperate opponent sacks the village dry and apparently helps themselves to tens of millions of dollars of our money, it is time to make an example out of that opponent. Larry Dale Keeling is relaying a presentation made to our General Assembly today that may prove that former Governor Ernie Fletcher (R) and former "acting" Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert may have unlawfully spent tons of our money from the highway construction contingency account to help Fletcher in the 2007 elections. Keeling says the highway construction contingency account only hit the $10 million mark once between 2001 and 2007, that was in 2004. But the spending broke the $10 million mark 3 times in 2007. $12.3 million - May 2007 $12.8 million - September $25.3 million - October See that, $25.3 million in October! This breaks all previous records and it appears Fletcher had quite...
How I will Remember Former Governor Ernie Fletcher (R)
2007-12-11 02:53:00 First I think former Governor Ernie Fletcher (R) will be first remembered as a tragic consequence of the current state of the Republican party. The GOP apparatus is both a corrupt and a brash example of politics gone wrong. Being the GOP's desire to politicize religion or the desire to facilitate an elitists society, the Republican party both needs change and honest leadership. Former Governor Ernie Fletcher (R) was selected to lead that change and his tragic failure will certainly be remembered as an example of what not to do. I draw from my own personal experiences when reminiscing about Fletcher. I was continuously fighting to keep his tainted form of politics out of the only official legislatively created organization that my people have; the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission. His total disregard to decency in leadership convinced me that he was not only a spineless leader that had no control over those around him, it convinced me that he had condoned their actio...
Gubernatorial Watch: Rankings
2007-11-20 06:33:00 The 2007 elections earlier this month took the top two seats off the board, with Democrat Steve Beshear knocking off Ernie Fletcher in Kentucky and Republican Bobby Jindal picking up the open seat in Louisiana, both in convincing fashion. Those results, along with Republican Haley Barbour's re-election in Mississippi ensured that Democrats would maintain their 28-22 majority heading into 2008, when 11 seats are up for grabs. Only a handful of those seats appear competitive at this point, so don't expect significant changes in landscape next year.1. Missouri (Blunt-R) [3]: At least one recent poll shows that Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon (right) has pulled ahead of Republican Governor Matt Blunt. Trailing at this point is not a good sign for Blunt, the nation's youngest governor, who is seeking his second term. Blunt won narrowly in 2004 and his approval ratings are less than stellar. Look for another close race in 2008, which could be affected by the presidential rac...

Senate Watch: News And Notes
2007-11-13 01:57:00 Polls, polls, and more polls--nearly every competitive 2008 Senate race was polled at least once last week, so today we will focus on those numbers and what they mean going forward.ColoradoPolling gives Democratic Congressman Mark Udall a 48%-41% lead over former Republican Congressman Bob Schaffer in the battle to replace retiring Republican Senator Wayne Allard. The poll also shows that Udall is better known by Colorado voters, with just over half familiar with Schaffer. These numbers should allow Colorado Democrats to breathe a little easier after an earlier poll showed the race neck and neck.KentuckyAnother poll shows that Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will face a serious re-election test in 2008. He leads potential rivals Greg Stumbo 48%-41% and Crit Luallen 49%-39%. McConnell has seen his approval rating fall as he has become the target of several Democratic groups tying him with President Bush and the Iraq War. Kentucky Democrats also had an impressive showin...

Ad Wars: Kentucky Senate Battle
2007-11-09 04:24:00 Mike HuckabeeThe conservative fiscal group Club For Growth continues its assault on Mike Huckabee with a new web ad attacking Huckabee's tax record as governor of Arkansas. The group has released several stinging reports about Huckabee already in the cycle.Barack ObamaThe Obama campaign's latest ad focusing on several issues including the economy, retirement, and change. It tells the story of a worker left "High and Dry" after his pension fund was raided by his employer. The campaign also has a new radio ad in South Carolina, that targets black voters in the state.Ron PaulThe Paul campaign has released its third radio ad in New Hampshire, this one suggesting Ron Paul is different from the standard Washington politician.Senate Watch: KentuckyFollowing a decisive victory in this week's gubernatorial election, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has become the new target for Bluegrass Democrats. Election 2007: Results Coming In
2007-11-07 06:01:00 The biggest prizes in the 2007 election season were the governor's offices in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Louisiana contest was settled weeks ago, with Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal avoiding a runoff to capture the seat for his party. Jindal's victory came as little surprise, with incumbent Kathleen Blanco so tarnished by Hurricane Katrina that she didn't seek re-election and Democrats failing to field a top tier challenger. The results in Mississippi and Kentucky have been just as apparent for months. Polling has shown Democrat Steve Beshear holding leads of 15-20 points over Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher. With 99.9% of the precincts reporting, Beshear has become the next governor of Kentucky, winning 59%-41%. In Mississippi, Republican Governor Haley Barbour, one of the few politicians to escape the Katrina situation with a stronger reputation, was never seriously challenged by conservative Democrat John Arthur Eaves in his bid for a second term. W...

Hey, Ernie Fletcher: Beshear to not let the door hit ya on the way out!
2007-11-07 00:00:00 We're happy to report that despite the anti-gay attempts from Republicans like Pat Boone (who was speaking on behalf of the GOP), gay-friendly Democratic candidate Steve Beshear still came up triumphant in yesterday's Kentucky gubernatorial face-off against incumbent Ernie Fletcher:...

Senate Watch: Bluegrass Battle Looming
2007-11-05 19:41:00 Mitch McConnell is minority leader in the Senate, the top-ranked Republican in Congress. He is a four term incumbent with a massive campaign chest to the tune of $6.8 million. After winning his first election by the thinnest of margins in 1984, he has increased his victory total each cycle and won in 2002 by nearly 30 points. McConnell doesn't even have an opponent yet, but he could be one of the most vulnerable Senate incumbents in 2008.Democrats are hoping history repeats itself in 2008. Four years ago, it was their minority leader, Tom Daschle, who was knocked off in South Dakota. Daschle was doomed because he had become the figurehead of a national party that had become unpopular in his home state. Now it is McConnell who finds himself the figurehead of a national party that is increasingly unpopular. Though President Bush carried Kentucky by 20 points in 2004, his popularity in the state has fallen sharply since then. Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher is nearing the e...

Ad Wars: Richardon's New Ad
2007-10-30 21:49:00 Bill RichardsonThe Richardson has an impressive new ad airing in Iowa today. In the ad, "When I Began," Richardson does an excellent job of laying out his platform, his record, and appeals to the average American. Richardson closes by saying, "I'm sure not the best looking or the flashiest, but I know who I am and I know how hard I'll work for you." The Richardson campaign has produced some of the best television advertisements of this cycle. His early ads were humorous, got him attention, and raised his profile and polling, while his two recent ads have shown Richardson's serious side and made him seem more presidential.Kentucky Gubernatorial RaceHere's the most recent ad from Democrat Steve Beshear. With just a week left before voters head to the polls, Beshear still holds a sizable lead over Republican incumbent Ernie Fletcher.

2007-10-23 21:31:00 KentuckyAnother poll confirms that Democrat Steve Beshear has a sizable lead over Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher heading into the final stretch of the campaign. Beshear leads Fletcher 58%-38%. It's never a good sign for an incumbent when their television advertisements (see below) two weeks before the election include the line, "Ethics panel clears Fletcher in hiring probe."Beshear's most recent ad suggests "it's time to change the way we do business in Kentucky." MississippiPolls show Republican Governor Haley Barbour also leads heading into his re-election effort next month. Barbour's recent ads paint an optimistic picture of Mississippi and suggest he has the agenda to move the state forward.Democrat John Eaves, attacks Barbour as a former lobbyist for big tobacco in his latest ad.WashingtonRepublican Dino Rossi is set to announce his candidacy later this week in Spokane. Rossi will face Democratic incumbent Christine Gregoire, who he narrowly lost to in 2004 after a p...

Gubernatorial Watch: News And Notes
2007-10-22 18:19:00 IndianaA poll last month confirmed Republican Governor Mitch Daniels enters 2008 as a favorite for re-election. Daniels edged several potential, though a clearer picture of the race won't become available until the Democratic nomination is determined. Former Congresswoman Jill Long Thompson currently leads architect Jim Schellinger and State Senator Richard Young, though the race is seen as still very much up in the air.KentuckyPolls show Democrat Steve Beshear still leads Republican incumbent Ernie Fletcher by double digits. Beshear's lead dropped to 16 points, down from a 19 point lead in September, but it remains a comfortable margin with the election just two weeks away. Fletcher narrowly survived a primary challenge from former Congresswoman Anne Northup earlier this year. A tumultuous first term plagued by scandal and indictment made him a major target for Democrats in the Bluegrass State.LouisianaSaturday, Louisiana voters elected Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal th...

Ernie Fletcher Shifts into Desperation Mode

Gubernatorial Watch: News And Notes
2007-08-06 18:33:00 Indiana? Republican Governor Mitch Daniels has an impressive $4.1 million available for his re-election effort. Daniels' cash on hand is more than his three Democratic challengers combined. Democrat Jim Schellinger, an Indianapolis architect, leads the Democratic field with $1.1 million in the bank.Kentucky? Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher continues to trail his Democratic challenger Steve Beshear. After polls showed the race tightening somewhat, Beshear has again opened a wide lead, 59%-36%. The scandal-plagued Fletcher surprisingly survived a primary challenge, but his luck seems set to run out in this general election matchup.Louisiana? Polling shows Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal with a big lead over Democrat Walter Boasso. Boasso's numbers have risen significantly since a similar survey in May, but still trails Jindal 52%-21%. Jindal needs 50% to avoid a runoff. Democratic Governor Kathleen Blanco is not seeking re-election.Missouri? Republican Governor Matt Bl...

Senate Watch: News And Notes
2007-08-01 21:46:00 Alaska? Federal agents raided the home of Republican Senator Ted Stevens on Monday. Stevens, the longest serving Republican in Senate history and a candidate for re-election in 2008, is being investigated for his ties to Bill Allen, a wealthy oil contractor. Allen, who's already admitted to bribing Alaskan government officials, oversaw a renovation project on Stevens' home.? Because the Alaska Democratic Party is in such weak state, it's difficult to believe they will be able to take advantage of the situation. Stevens may opt against a re-election bid, but the seat would likely remain in Republican hands.Kentucky? Attorney General Greg Stumbo has filed papers to challenge Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for the Senate. ? McConnell is considered somewhat vulnerable due to the national mood favoring Democrats and the low approval numbers for both President Bush and the Iraq War. Democrats are hoping for a repeat of 2004, when their Senate leader, Tom Daschle, was up...

Kentucky Gubernatorial Race
2007-02-28 00:53:00 More trouble is brewing for struggling Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher. His lieutenant governor, Steve Pence, has announced his support for GOP rival Anne Northup, who is preparing to challenge Fletcher for the Republican nomination. Pence had previously stated that he would not run again on a ticket with Fletcher. Senator Jim Bunning has also endorsed Northup, while Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has thus far remained neutral.Fletcher has been in trouble since being indicted over questions about his administration's hiring practices:Fletcher was indicted on misdemeanor charges as part of an investigation into his administration's hiring practices. While that inquiry was under way, he issued a blanket pardon for anyone in his administration, other than himself, who had been or might be charged in connection with crimes committed up to that point. When Fletcher was called before a Franklin County grand jury in August 2005, he invoked his right under the Fifth Amendment no...
