Jonny and the Shamen - Adventures in Espionage [2000]
2008-08-11 17:53:00 Phil Dirt; t's been a year and a half sine their last release. This a definite step up, with tight well crafted songs, and excellent surf sounds. The theme may be espionage, and the writing may lean that way, but underlying that is solid surfability. An excellent release.[Reverb Central]There must be something in that southern water that creates some of the most imaginative surf/punk outfits. However, unlike Atlanta sci-fi geeks Man or Astroman?, the Saraland, AL outfit of Jonny and the Shamen contains a heavy riffage of surf and hi-tech secret agent gadgetry. Each track off of their debut Adventures in Espionage is a blasting effort of spy themes that would be appropriate for the opening credits of Mission Impossible, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., or Get Smart. Even if this idea has been beaten to death since the Ventures cover of "Secret Agent Man," Jonny and the Shamen brew a fast-paced energy and up the octane, making this genre fresh and creative. Data Breach And Espionage Fears Overblown: Petrobras Recovers Stolen Disks
2008-02-29 07:58:00 A couple of weeks back I picked up on an article that had the Brazilian government mobilizing its intelligence and police forces to recover stolen laptops and hard drives. The devices stored data on recently discovered oil and gas fields found off the coast of Brazil. The loss of data led to much speculation on who could have done it and why, including whether it was a case of industrial espionage. I pointed out at the time that I couldn?t see how spies would make use of any stolen data: oil fields hundreds of feet beneath the sea surface are not something you can steal. (On further thought, perhaps the data will be useful if the rights to pump parts of the field are auctioned off or something. I mean, who wants the risk of pumping the wrong part of the field, eh?) I also pointed out that all the furor would be moot if the laptops and hard drives in question had been encrypted using advanced encryption like AlertBoot. Well, it turns out th...

The Nuclear Espionage Media Cover-up
2008-02-18 15:26:00 Hat tip to The Brad Blog. This story smells like Cheney all over. There may be a good reason why the Sibel Edmunds allegations were covered up. I wonder if the Bush Administration ordered a violation of treaty obligations, and very likely a violation of US and International law. Bush could have authorized passing nuclear secrets to Turkey as a counter to Iran and to persuade it to support the invasion of Iraq. But those same sources may have leaked nuclear secrets to Pakistan as well, perhaps deliberately, to buy Musharraf's cooperation in the "War on Terror." Dallas Morning News: Philip Giraldi Most Americans have never heard of Sibel Edmonds, and if the U.S. government has its way, they never will. The former FBI translator turned whistle-blower tells a chilling story of corruption at Washington's highest levels – sale of nuclear secrets, shielding of terrorist suspects, illegal arms transfers, narcotics trafficking, money laundering, espionage. She may be a first-rate fab...

Taiwan accesses damage after US unveils Chinese espionage
2008-02-13 15:10:00 In a story right out of the shadow of the new cold wars, four Chinese spies are arrested in the US. Taiwan is accessing the damage. M&C Taiwan said Tuesday it is trying to determine exactly what kind of classified information China may have received after four people were charged in espionage cases in the US that involved the passing of military secrets to the Chinese government. 'Regarding the news that the US has cracked a spy ring, we are taking it seriously. We have formed a taskforce to assess damage and to evaluate security control,' Taiwan's Defence Ministry said in a statement. The suspects arrested in two separate espionage cases Monday included an analyst in the Pentagon's office overseeing foreign military sales, Greg Bergersen, 51, and Dongfan 'Greg' Chung, a 72- year old former Boeing engineer. Bergersen allegedly provided documents detailing planned US military sales to Taiwan to an agent of the Chinese government. He faces 10 years in prison if convicted on ...

Corporate Espionage And Data Security
2007-11-13 05:52:00 The Korea Times is reporting that two executives at STX Heavy Industries, based out of South Korea, were arrested this past Friday on charges of stealing key technology from their former employer, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. The technology in question was related to desalination and power generation. Doosan is one of the lesser known (at least, internationally) Korean chaebols, conglomerates that do everything from construction to building cars to building microchips. Samsung, one of the leading chaebols in Korea, for example, is not just an LCD TV and flash-memory manufacturer. It also builds cars (Renault supplies the engines, supposedly) and skyscrapers; operates a brokerage house; and develops heavy machinery as well as operating an amusement park outside Seoul.
