Is Ethanol in Gasoline Really Green, or Just a Scam?
2008-06-05 18:21:00
Why are people thinking alcohol in gasoline helps to be 'green'? I can't seem to believe it is better in any way. Or this just a way to making us feel better? If so, I would be much happier if we made Rye/Whiskey instead? And as a side note: shouldn't green mean almost NO pollutants rather than slig
BMW working on exhaust generator, nixes ethanol.
2008-06-05 14:00:00
Cars are great wasters. Of all the energy stored in the fuel, only a third is used to propel the car and run its systems. The rest is lost in heat from the engine and the exhaust system. One way of getting more bang for the fuel buck could be the exhaust powered generator developed by British Foresight Motors that we posted on earlier. By using engine exhausts to power the car's generator the engine is relieved of this work and hopefully uses less fuel. Another idea, under development by BMW, is a thermo electric generator also placed in the exhaust system. Such a generator generates power by utilizing the dynamics of cold and warm air. Similar systems has been in use by NASA for years. BMW hopes to have a working system capable of generating 1,000 W within five years. This will be enough to run a car's AC and heat seats - and save up to five percent on fuel. BMW does not, however, have any plans to develop engines capable of running on the increasingly popular E85 methanol fuel.
How do I make a home based ethanol production facilities
2008-06-02 22:15:00
I was investigating the idea of home based ethanol production from switchgrass. My production requirements are only about 5 U.S. Gallons/month (if I can get more production that required then I happily can put it to use but less than this and I wouldn't be able put it to a regular application). What

Ethanol = Bad
2008-05-14 08:10:00
Right now on Channel 8 in Santa Cruz they're talking about something I seem to recall saying myself when ethanol first was released and ethanol cars came out: it's bad.Well, it's being blamed for a food crisis, which is exactly what I was saying before. Since ethanol uses something called corn, and we Americans, and much of the world, seem to like this particular vegetable when it comes to food, the result is that food costs are going up, particularly in lovely places like Mexico, which has enough problems as it is with poverty. Here's a word of advice: how about we stop being retarded and thinking about TEMPORARY solutions and get us some PERMANENT solutions instead? Or is that too logical for the world? Where the hell are the Japanese on this? Shouldn't they be firing off a bunch of cars that run off recycled soda cans or something?Yeah.(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)P.S.: Apologies for the short posts, but in an effort to keep active whi...
Brazil starts pro-ethanol diplomatic offensive
2008-05-14 02:37:00
Brazil is going to try really hard to convince the world that Brazilian sugarcane ethanol is just great. The Latin American giant is about to start what they're calling a "diplomatic offensive" that will culminate in a World Biofuels Summit from November 17th to 21th in São Paulo. According to André Caranha Correa, Chancelor's Director of Energy, there isn't enough information out there on Brazilian ethanol. First of all, Correa said, it should be excluded from the world rise of feedstocks. He also said that Brazil started working with ethanol in 1975 after the 1973 oil crisis, so it's a well-known and proven technology / solution. He compared sugarcane with USA's corn-based ethanol, saying the U.S. fuel could affect food prices. He insisted that ethanol is more environmental friendly than gasoline, even denying that the Amazon forest was being destroyed to produce sugarcane (maybe not, but don't forget this). As for the poor work conditions we've heard about, Corre...

Ethanol: the Inconvenient Truth
2008-05-12 21:07:00
ethanol powered carPhoto by: homedad33Contrary to all the hype we now know that Ethanol is not the liquid filling the cup of the Holy Grail: it requires massive subsidies (In 2005 alone corn subsidies totaled $9.4 billion); it will never displace any significant amount of imported oil; it has a deleterious effect on air quality; and it's the major cause of the rise in food prices [George Edward Loper]. The subsidy process, aside from money, requires tremendous legislative efforts: acording to Global Subsidies Initiative [PDF] there are now in place hundreds of programs to subsidize nearly every stage of the ethanol and biodiesel supply chains. The National Biodiesel Board, for example, notes that it is tracking more than 160 pieces of legislation at the state level for biodiesel alone. It is not only air quality that suffers:Madville Times, 7 Dec 2007, Ethanol Pros and Cons: Energy Independence, But Poison BurgersOne of the great side-benefits of turning corn into ethanol is t...
Food Inflation, Ethanol Stocks and the Future
2008-05-09 20:56:00
Nearly a year ago we authored an article discussing the secular change in food and energy prices and their likely impact on inflation across the board. We suggested headline CPI was more realistic than the Federal Reserve even understood. We insisted that food and energy price rise would lead to embedded inflation, and rise in the Core CPI. There were two interesting articles published over the past couple days that add chapters to the inflation saga that is still in the midst of development. The IMF warned yesterday that global inflation was in fact a problem. An organization loaded with representatives who make a lot more money than me, the IMF, brilliantly reported that inflation had reemerged and that the drivers appeared to be "fundamental" in nature. Sound familiar? Yeah, you read that at The Greek last summer, when we said the drivers of food price rise were not seasonal, but secular in nature (a.k.a. IMF's fundamental), and should not be discounted as temporary noise that w...

Photo by merfam. Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0.Sure, you might be able to describe the difference between cellulosic ethanol made by Coskata and that made by Mascoma. Or, perhaps your biofuel knowledge is just right to explain how cellulosic ethanol and corn ethanol are different, and what each might mean to the environment. But trust me, the general public has a long way to go to understand what all these new fuel types are. Remember the posts about filling up with the wrong fuel?Anyway, I'd just like to point out this letter to the editor that appeared in today's Washington Post. In a May 3 editorial called "The Greening of Montgomery," the WaPo mangled the difference between biodiesel and ethanol, suggesting that while switching Montgomery County's fleet of diesel cars to biofuels would be a good move, because of the problems with ethanol, care should be taken. A reader, Lynne Tucker of Bethesda, wrote in to clarify just which biofuel can go into what type of eng...

Ethanol powered chopper from Cadillac to be shown in LA
2008-05-07 02:33:00
There was a time not too long ago that Lincoln and Cadillac fought over the high-end auto market in the United States. These days, the field is pretty much wild open for Caddy, though Lincoln still sells some nice vehicles. A few years ago, Lincoln commissioned the boys from Orange County to build a chopper commemorating the beginning of production of the Mark LT pickup. Cadillac apparently had to keep up, so the company will be showing off a new chopper at the upcoming LA Auto Show. This will actually be Cadillac's second commissioned bike, but this one is a bit special, as it's been designed to run on ethanol and will supposedly represent GM's "strength in science and technology." With all due respect to the builders of the bike, there's not a whole lot that's technologically advanced in a chopper built with a big fat rear tire and an air-cooled V-Twin, even one that has been jetted properly for alcohol fuel. Still, the machine should make a wee bit more power running on etha...

GM plans to partner up with another cellulosic ethanol maker
2008-04-30 21:44:00
You probably remember that back in January of this year, General Motors announced that it was partnering up with Coskata to make cheap cellulosic ethanol using a process developed by Coskata which includes the use of microorganisms developed by Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma University. Coskata has apparently broken ground on a new plant that is being built in Pennsylvania. While Coskata appears to be moving along at a fine pace, Auto Observer is reporting that Coskata is not the only cellulosic ethanol provider that the General is interested in being attached to. GM said back in January that Coskata would not be the company's only biofuel partner. So far, everything sounds very "hush-hush" about this new partnership, but GM president Fritz Henderson is expected to make an announcement tomorrow in Washington D.C. We don't have any information on who America's largest automakers is partnering with, but we know that there are plenty of other companies currently working on c...

New ethanol sensor could make for safer biofuel refineries
2008-04-30 00:05:00
Every now and again, we hear a report about some dangerous explosion or accident at a biofuel refinery. While there are a variety of causes for these events, one way to prevent at least some of them is to identify when dangerous concentrations of fuel build up and disperse those gases. A new detector by Sensor Electronics of Minneapolis can identify that situation, and Domestic Fuel writes that the device "is thought to be ideal for protecting biofuel refineries." The small sensor can be used anywhere where ethanol will be pumped, processed or stored, and can "sniff" out ethanol and send a warning if the concentration gets too high. The sensor is only eight inches high and 2.5 inches in diameter and quite weatherproof, so it should be able to work in a lot of environments. [Source: Domestic Fuel]

Ethanol Basics
2008-04-28 15:57:00
The use of ethanol as an alternative fuel is becoming increasingly popular by ever conscious consumers wishing to do their little bit for the planet. It may even be a better alternative to bio fuel, it seems that it is a lot more pleasant to make at any rate. What is Ethanol? Ethanol is a grain alcohol, or plant mass formula derived from the natural sugars found in bio mass, or vegetation such as corn, wheat, barley, potatoes and sugar cane. This is then processed to make a renewable form of fuel or fuel additive, which is both cost effective and good for the planet. Many cars are able to run on Ethanol and gasoline mixtures. Although at the moment, the mixtures are only a ratio of 10% Ethanol, to 90% fossil fuel.Benefits of EthanolThere are many benefits of using an alternative fuel such as Ethanol, for starters it is a renewable resource, fossil fuels used to make gasoline is not renewable, so one day they will run out, it is because of this that people, have become more aware of a...
Obama says US will need to abandon maize-based ethanol production
2008-04-28 03:28:00
Obama proves himself to be more statesman than politician here. In this statement he is likely to do his candidacy more harm than good, but he speaks an absolute truth that most others wouldn't dare. BigNewsNetwork.com In the US, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has said the US will not be able to ignore global suffering from a food crisis. Obama said the US should be "mindful" of the effect its own search for alternative fuel sources is having and should slowly move away from maize-based fuel production that has shared the blame for surging food prices. He said that maize-based ethanol, which is heavily subsidised in Obama's home state of Illinois, was a technology that should soon make way for other alternatives. "We're going to have to shift to cellulosic ethanol, using biomass that is not part of the food chain," he said. "And that's going to require some time." The production of bio-fuels in industrial nations has been widely blamed for the sharp rises in th...
DOE readies $86m in grants for three cellulosic ethanol plants
2008-04-24 00:45:00
Late last week, the U.S. Department of Energy picked three cellulosic ethanol projects as recipients of up to $86m in federal funding for fiscal years 2008-2011. These "small-scale biorefinery projects" are located in Maine, Tennessee and Kentucky and are intended to bring "cost-competitive" second-generation ethanol to market by 2012 (the plants will also make other bio-based chemicals and products). DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman said the projects would help President Bush reach his goal of stopping greenhouse gas emissions growth by 2025. The three winners are: RSE Pulp & Chemical of Old Town, Maine. (DOE share: up to $30 million.) This plant will use a wood extract made at an existing pulp mill. Mascoma Corporation of Boston, Massachusetts Proposed Plant in Vonore, Tennessee. (DOE share: up to $26 million.) The source here will be switchgrass and will be the largest cellulosic ethanol plant in Tennessee. Ecofin, LLC, of Nicholasville, Kentucky. (DOE share: up to $30 millio...

Scania introduces first ethanol-powered trucks
2008-04-17 00:13:00
Scania has announced that, after 20 years of providing ethanol buses, the Swedish company (owned by Volkswagen) is going to sell ethanol trucks from the next model year onwards. The marque also announced agreements to build a network of fueling stations to make it easily available for small businesses to buy the biofuel. According to Scania's data, ethanol produced from sugarcane can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to a regular diesel engine. Scania stated that it's betting on ethanol because it's the most cost-efficient biofuel available. What you might find interesting is that Scania's technology makes engines work according to the diesel principle (compression-ignition). This allow the engines to be as efficient as diesel units. Scania's ethanol contains 5-7 percent special additives that improve ignition and lubrication. Most current flex-fuel engines compatible with ethanol use the otto cycle with lower efficiency. Current ethanol-powered buses by Scania ...
You May Be Misinformed About Ethanol Here Are The Facts Posted By : GARKO
2008-04-16 23:09:00
As the myth around global warming begins to unravel and Operation Desperation sets in, it's important for the public to know why biofuels aren't the answer to solving global warming. Biofuel, as you probably know or can guess from the name, is any energy source derived from living organisms of any kind. The most common biofuel is a blend of gasoline called E85, which means it's 15% gasoline and 85% ethanol. But the actual ratio is subject to change due to the outside temperatrue and it might be better named E70-85. During cold weather, more gasoline needs to be added to the mixture to ensure the fuel works properly, so E85 is at least 70% ethanol. A recent study by United College Marketing Services has shown that student credit lines have increased to over $6,000. Credit card usage has tripled since 2001 amongst teenagers as well. Since eighteen year-olds in many countries and most U.S. states are eligible for a card without parental consent or employment, the likelihood o...
Ethanol A Looming Environmental Catastrophe Posted By : GARKO
2008-04-16 23:09:00
As the myth around global warming begins to unravel and Operation Desperation sets in, it's important for the public to know why biofuels aren't the answer to solving global warming. Biofuels have achieved a great deal of popularity but that is mainly because the politicians have been pushing it hard along with the media. . The most prevalent variety of biofuel is Ethanol made from corn and combined with gasoline into something called E85, and this is a mixture in a ratio of 15:85 gasoline:ethanol. However, the gasoline and ethanol content changes depending on the season. During the Winter months you need more gasoline in the mixture to ensure the fuel works properly, so E85 is at least 70% ethanol. Many graduates think that the six months they have before the required scheduled repayment of their various college debts seems like forever. The six months is nothing compared to the years and years of payments ahead of you. A consolidation of student loans can make the monthly ...
