Chicago Tribune WRITTEN BY: James Kimberly, Tribune reporter, May 30, 2008 HIS ORIGINAL IDEAS: Strict policies that put it at the forefront of efforts to weed out plagiarism led a prominent high school to take action Thursday against its top administrator and top student. School District 203's superintendent moved to reassign Naperville Central High School Principal Jim Caudill next school year, while student Steve Su is being asked to return his valedictorian's medal, after each plagiarized portions of speeches they gave during commencement events last week, the district announced Thursday. District 203 students and teachers are required to submit written papers through software designed to identify plagiarized passages, such as the software available from http://www.turnitin.com/. Editorial: Son Of A Bitch Stole My Gas
2008-05-27 00:58:00 What a day in April it was. The prior week's light showers gave birth to new flowers and a healthy dark green lawn. Of course, as the man of the house, I found myself outside on a crisp but slightly warm morning fixing the blade of an overturned lawnmower. What do I see out of the corner of my eye? Greg Lynch, childhood friend and next door neighbor for fifteen years, crouching down nearly out of sight, siphoning gas from my Ford F-150.

Embryology Bill and the state of Scientific morality/ethics!
2008-05-20 10:28:00 BBC NEWS | Politics | MPs to vote on abortion limit cut The Link above takes you to the details about the bill from the usually biased BBC website. Here is a link from another point of view that details why in particular stopping Animal-Human hybrids, the threat of 'spare part children' and Fatherless families and Abortion Limit reduction are so important. At least David Cameron is voting to drop the 24 week limit and Ian Duncan Smith is behind wanting to keep the requirement for a Father with IVF. Mr Brown on the other hand is voting yes on all of them. How can a man who professes to be a Christian support this Act. The Hybrid arguments that support the creation of Animal-Human hybrid creation just highlights to me where evolutionary thinking leads. If we are just a cosmic accident and here by pure chance then there is no basis for morality. An argument that sticks dogmatically to the point that it 'may' help develop cures for diseases is missing a huge side. W...

Selling Vulnerabilities and Ethics
2008-05-18 21:19:00 Shoaib just blogged on Hacking & Security Community - Ethical or Unethical?. To start with: I do not claim that I know all about ethics and that there is only one view on ethics but I have a clear view on certain things. I blogged on this theme several times already and made my points pretty clear: Vulnerability Auction Selling Vulnerabilities? WabiSabiLabi and their view on ethics When I talk to people who are selling vulnerabilities, they keep telling me that it is their right to sell their work and as they do vulnerability research for a living. So, let's use an analogy: How ethical would it be to try to find ways how to break into my house and then selling them to the people paying most as they will offer services to me to protect me? Is this ethical? Not from my perspective. If I would hire somebody to look for these vulnerabilities, this is a different game but I would then want to know them without going public. WasbiSabiLabi tells us that they will not sell to the...
Ali Hewson: ethics girl
2008-05-18 08:55:00 Ali Hewson: ethics girl Not for Ali Hewson the traditional rock chick's pursuits of shopping and partying. Bono's wife is far too busy raising a family and worrying about saving the world. Could she also be an Irish president-in-waiting, asks Justine Picardie There was a time when one might have expected a meeting with a rock star's wife to be attended by a certain amount of mayhem - temper tantrums and trashed hotel rooms, perhaps, or at the very least a retinue including a drug dealer, masseuse, hair stylist and personal astrologer.Ali Hewson: 'When he climbs up on the kitchen table at 11pm to play a gig, I have to tell him, I'm not 60,000 people!' But the softly spoken 47-year-old woman sitting opposite me in a suite in Claridge's is anything but the cartoon version of a hell-raising, hard-drinking rock chick; she is wearing a black calf-length Comme des Garçons skirt with a Victorian bell-sleeved blouse; raven hair neatly brushed, porcelain skin unadorned by make...

David Vitter Cleared By Senate Ethics Committee
2008-05-09 18:30:00 By- Suzie-Q @ 9:30 AM MST Senate Ethics Committee Clears David Vitter By Paul Kiel - May 8, 2008, 4:44PM The Senate ethics committee has dismissed a complaint against Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) for soliciting prostitution. The complaint was filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. The group had charged that Vitter’s solicitation of prostitutes in Washington, D.C. and Louisiana had broken the law and thus was “improper conduct” that ought to be punished. Vitter reportedly used the D.C. Madam’s escort service, in addition to repeatedly visiting a prostitute in New Orleans back in 1999. The committee dismissed the complaint, according to the letter, because “the conduct at issue” occurred before Vitter’s run for the Senate, he was not charged criminally, and because it “did not involve use of public office or status for improper purposes.” The letter, signed by all six members of the committee, adds: “T...

Lawyer Ethics With Chinese Characteristics. It Matters.
2008-05-06 20:34:00 Second year SMU law student, Jing "Brad" Luo, recently had an article of his on China lawyer ethics published in China Law & Practice Magazine. A law student getting an article published in such a prestigious magazine (in his second language, no less) is really quite a feat. The article is entitled, "Chinese Law on Lawyers Amended: Progress Made and to Be Made," and though a subscription is required to see the whole article on the China Law & Practice site, Brad nicely summarizes it on his own blog, with a post, entitled, "Legal Ethics, In Chinese Style." My gross summary of Brad's summary is that China's new ethical rules for lawyers expand a bit on both the scope of confidentiality of client information and on what constitutes a conflict of interest, but on neither front have the rules gone far enough to make Western clients feel terribly comfortable. I previously wrote on why this discomfort is necessary in a post, entitled, "China Lawyer Ethics -- Perils And Pitfalls For F...

Reviewing Ethics: A Question For All
2008-05-03 02:48:00 I have a question that I think needs answering from more people than just myself (which is why I'm asking the question):Is it unethical for me to enter into contests on a blog I do reviews for even if I'm told it's okay by the owner of the blog?I ask this question because SQT of F & SF Lovin' Book Reviews often has some really good little contests for free books. As most of you know I do reviews for that blog. So, while SQT says that it's okay for me to enter, I feel some apprehension because I have a feeling that there is something unethical about it. Some part of me doesn't feel right about entering those contests because I get this sense that I shouldn't be entering seeing how I'm a member of the reviewing crew. What do you think on this issue? Am I just being silly?(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)

The story said the boy was in a relationship with a 22-year-old woman, whose ex-boyfriend tipped off police that she was having sex with a minor. Police have opened an investigation, the story said. Almost all news organizations refrain from identifying sex crime victims, let alone show their picture, because of the stigma often attached to it, said Kelly McBride, ethics group leader at the journalism think tank Poynter Institute. I get a LOT of flak from people about who I am and what I represent, however, one thing that I have gotten credit for, is co...

House Votes to Close Code of Ethics Loophole on Contracts Performed Outside
2008-04-24 04:38:00 The requirement found at FAR 52,203-13 was implemented on December 24, 2007 and requires any contractor who is awarded a contract in excess of $5 million to have a written Code of Business Ethics and Conduct within thirty days after award. Large business firms must also implement a training and compliance program within ninety days (see our earlier blog article for additional information). The requirements, however, did not apply to contracts that were to be performed outside of the United States. This “exemption” for foreign projects has now received the attention of the U.S. House of representatives. As reported today by the Associated Press, the House has voted to close a multibillion-dollar loophole in a crackdown on contract fraud, approving plans to force the Bush administration to act within six months. At issue is a Bush administration rule requiring government contractors to report misuse of taxpayer dollars to the Justice Department. The rule, as...

Citing Ethics, Some Doctors Are Rejecting Industry Pay
2008-04-15 16:36:00 By GINA KOLATAWith little fanfare, a small number of prominent academic scientists have made a decision that was until recently all but unheard of. They decided to stop accepting payments from food, drug and medical device companies. No longer will they be paid for speaking at meetings or for sitting on advisory boards. They may still work with companies. It is important, they say, for knowledgeable scientists to help companies draw up and interpret studies. But the work will be pro bono. The scientists say their decisions were private and made with mixed emotions. In at least one case, the choice resulted in significant financial sacrifice. While the investigators say they do not want to appear superior to their colleagues, they also express relief. At last, they say, when they offer a heartfelt and scientifically reasoned opinion, no one will silently put an asterisk next to their name. They are part of a group responding to accusations of ethical conflicts inherent in these arrangem...

Between Ethics and Security
2008-04-02 17:32:00 Doro , has recently posted on the efforts on Govt officials in Malaysia placing CCTV?s around the Town. Yup, Huge Project, Huge Budgets. The concern however is, not on the availability of the CCTVs, Although that itself can be a threat, I?d get back to that in a bit. The concern is really, on how effective is these CCTV?s in actually helping Investigators to SOLVE cases , that crop up ? The case that doro highlighted on ?Nurin? a gal who was kidnapped , and the culprit eventually caught on CCTV, but never brought to justice, is an excellent example of such ineffectiveness, of IT Governance on a National Level, especially when it comes to proper Information Forensics People, Process and Technologies to be in place.
