One of the reasons I left my beloved old church was a disagreement (one of many) that I had over denominational doctrine. The first time this particular doctrine was revealed to me was at a youth event during which communion was celebrated. I was surprised that my pastor at the time, who I greatly ...
Eucharist = Eucaristia

The Eucharist
2007-10-17 02:56:00
The Eucharist, which is also called the Holy Communion, Mass, the Lord’s Supper or the Divine Liturgy, is a sacrament accepted by almost all Christians. Christians don’t say that they ‘do’ or ‘carry out’ the Eucharist; they celebrate it. In some churches, the person who takes the leading role in the ceremony is called the celebrant. What ...
Faith and the Eucharist
2007-10-12 20:58:00
Here is the last question (for now) from "Lady Mo." It's about the role of faith in the Eucharist. I am very thankful for all of her questions, and I look forward to further opportunities to share my faith with her.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -My last question for now is on the Lord's Table.During mass, when communion is taken, do Roman Catholics believe that the bread and wine actually turn into the literal blood and body of Jesus when the priest consecrates it, giving the person eternal life?Yes. When the priest consecrates the bread and wine, it truly, really, and substantially becomes the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As for "eternal life" being received by it, you shouldn't take this to mean that once a Catholic receives the Eucharist he has his irrevocable ticket to heaven. The Eucharist brings eternal life in that: through it we receive Jesus Himself, who IS eternal life, andit helps us to live a life of grace and frie...

The Makeup of the Eucharist in the Eastern Catholic Rites
2007-09-23 22:13:00
A member of Phatmass recently asked the following question: Is the physical makeup of the Eucharist in other rites the same as in the Latin rite? Same percentages of wheat, etc.?I'm probably not the best person to answer this question, since I'm a Latin Rite Catholic. But, I will certainly try my best. The Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, nos. 706-707 read as follows: 706 In the Divine Liturgy the sacred gifts which are offered are bread made of wheat alone and recently made so that there is no danger of corruption and natural wine of the grape and not corrupt.707 1. The preparation of the Eucharistic bread, the prayers performed by the priests before the Divine Liturgy, the observance of the Eucharistic fast, liturgical vestments, the time and place of the celebration and other like matters must be precisely established by the norms of each Church sui iuris.2. For a just cause and having removed any astonishment on the part of the Christian faithful, it is permissible to us...
Benedict?s appeal for Eucharistic Conversion!

June Poll - Perceptions of the Eucharist in the OC/IC Community
2007-07-24 12:10:00
28 visitors participated in the most recent poll that asked about your Eucharistic theology. Before I play with the results, here is the breakdown:68% (19 votes) agreed that the elements become the ?real presence? of Christ at the consecration.25% (7 votes) of those participating believe in transubstantiation.7% (2 votes) said that the Eucharist is merely a potent symbol of our Christian identity. In this poll I am more aware than previously of the question of how many participants were OC/IC folk vs. readers from other traditions. Assume for the purpose of this reflection that all 28 participants were OC/IC folk the numbers are rather interesting. For example, that there is a small percentage of our community that is self identified as ?independent sacramental? but simultaneously rejects a concept most sacramentalists view as central to the idea of the Eucharist; that is the mystery of Christ?s real presence (never mind the mechanics of that for a moment). What is more the number of...

Eucharistic Prayer Number One, Please
2007-07-23 15:43:00
You might recall that I am in my early 40s, and grew up, for all intents and purposes, with the Mass according to the Missal of Paul VI. But I remember back to my days in grade school and high school, with fairly conservative priests in my fairly conservative parish. We used to hear the First Eucharistic Prayer on occasion back then. But, seriously, I don't think I have heard it in 30 years.
2008: A Centenary of a Eucharistic Procession
2007-06-07 22:14:00
International Eucharistic Congress: London 1908 Next year marks the centenary of a Eucharistic procession which was banned and which led to the resignations of two Cabinet ministers in the United Kngdom. The occasion was the International Eucharistic Congress which was held in London from 9th to 13th September 1908 at the invitation of the Archbishop of Westminster, Archbishop Bourne. It was the first Engllish speaking International Congress of the Eucharist in an English speaking country. More importantly, it was the first time that a legate of the Pope (Cardinal Vincent Vannutelli) had been in England since the Reformation. At that time, London was the centre of a huge Empire and the holding of such an event in such a location was obviously important. At the time it was regarded as the greatest religious triumph of its generation. More than three hundred and fifty years had elapsed since a legate from the pope had been seen in England. With him were six other cardinals, fourteen arch...
Eucharistic Processions
2007-06-07 10:04:00
The Corpus Domini processionMiniature from one of the liturgical codices of Santa Maria del Fiore (15th century).Fondi edili, Laurentian Library, Florence. Eucharistic processions, often called ?Corpus Christi? processions, have a long history. The practice was heavily criticised by the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, and reformers with different beliefs about the Eucharist soon ended the celebrations in much of northern Europe.Catholics, however, continued them with renewed zeal, and towns often competed to have the most elaborate or well-attended processions on the holy day of Corpus Christi.Nowadays these processions pass without adverse comment.

A Reformed view of the Eucharist

(H/T: The Boar's Head Tavern and TitusOneNine)For those interested in learning a bit more of how our brothers and sisters in the Reformed tradition view the Eucharist, check out Cynthia Nielsen's guest post series on the topic:Part I: Between the Rock and a Hard Place: A Reformed View of the EucharistThe author of the article on which the post is based upon, Douglas Farrow, has converted to Catholicism since. Nonetheless, it is still an interesting analysis of Calvin's view of the Eucharist.

An Episcopalian minister from Maine has raised more than $60,000 for AIDS and poverty charities by turning regular services into U2 tributes. 2007-03-13 16:49:00
Vatican City, March 13 : Pope Benedict XVI Tuesday reaffirmed his conservative views on matters of faith by issuing strict rules on the Eucharist and by inviting priests to revive Latin as the main language used during Holy Mass.
(Some of) The Fathers on the Eucharist
2007-03-06 02:25:00
They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again. - Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Smyrnaeans, Ch. 8.For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh. For the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels, have thus delivered unto us what was enjoined upon them; that Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, said,"This do in remembrance of Me, this is My body;" and that, after the same manner, having taken the cup and given thanks,...
David F. Ford on the eucharist
2006-09-26 06:12:01
In the eucharist, ?the realm of the ordinary has been taken up and involved in the most momentous events without rejection, contrast or competition between the two. There is no middle ground needed, no mediating of the ordinary to the extraordinary. The God who is implied by the blessing of these elements is at home with matter and its routine usage as well as with the climactic drama of Jesus?
