New petition calls for open standards in the European Parliament
2008-03-11 04:09:00
At a time when the EU Commission investigates the anti-competitive behaviour of a market-dominant player, the European Parliament (EP) still imposes that same specific software choice on both the European Union's citizens and its own MEPs. OpenForum Europe, The European Software Market Association, and the Free Software Foundation Europe today launched a petition to call on the EP to use open standards so that all citizens can participate in the democratic process.
The European Parliament would trade high CO2 figures for safety
2008-01-20 19:46:00
The European Parliament has approved a report that supports automakers' demands: the automakers can produce new models that emit more CO2 than the proposed average, as long as the additional emissions are direct consequence of safety measures. The report also asks the European Commission to develop legislation that develops the concept. The measure was justified under manufacturers' claims that the new CO2 limits could hamper jobs in Europe. Despite all the figures that have been bandied about, the report includes no specific CO2 maximum production levels until 2015, when a target of 125 g/km would be feasible. With this new limit, the Parliament agrees with automakers that have claimed that it was difficult to attain, such an endeavor would need 5 to 7 years for development. The latest European proposal arrived from the European Commission asking last December to lower the current 160 g/km to 130 g/km by 2012. This report also asks European countries to use public funding for R+D...
European Parliament Vs. the Egyptian Regime : Clearing the Myth
2008-01-20 13:34:00
Of course you may have heard about the powerful resolution of the European Parliament regarding the human rights in Egypt and the practices of its regime. First here is the official Press release of the resolution from the official European Parliament website, it is important to read the resolution or its summary from its primary source in order to know the truth. And here is the official resolution itself, please read it carefully if you have time Second I respect the EP and EU for their unbiased position unlike G.W Bush who opens his mouth only when he wants something in return so badly. Well the resolution had an echo of an earthquake for the Egyptian regime and now they turned the matter in to an assault on Egypt's sovereignty, the same old game of internal affairs, national dignity, and so it is not a surprise to find the head of the Egyptian parliament and the Egyptian foreign minister slamming the resolution and announcing the war in the official media regarding this res...
European Parliament Resolution on Egypt's Human Rights Situation
2008-01-18 12:07:00
The European Parliament has just passed a resolution on the situation of human rights in Egypt. The resolution is quite critical of Egypt's record on human rights and cites specific examples such as the one regarding religious minorities, including the Baha'is. It states that they "are still sadly crippled by sectarian isolation."The resolution also affirms that it "Recognises the role that Egypt plays in the Middle East peace process and the importance that EU-Egypt relations have for the entire Euro-Mediterranean area, but points out that respect for human rights is a fundamental value of the EU-Egypt Association Agreement and reaffirms the importance of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership for promoting the rule of law and fundamental freedoms...."Furthermore, the European Parliament "Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Egyptian Government and Parliament, the governments and parliaments of the Member States and the Mediterranean ...

Union cheer as European Parliament amends labour laws
2007-07-24 11:00:00
Trade unions have claimed victory in the battle over the European Parliament's final report on the modernisation of labour law after last-minute changes were accepted. Several amendments were made by MEPs in Strasbourg before the paper drawn up in response to the European Commission's Green Paper on labour laws was adopted by 479 votes to 61. A spokesman for the continent's union umbrella body, the European Trade Union Confederation, said: "We welcome the European Parliament's clear message to the European Commission that the modernisation of labour law must cover adequate protection, equal treatment and quality jobs for all workers." However, employers refused to concede defeat over the wording of the policy document. David Yeandle, deputy director of employment policy at manufacturers' body the EEF, told Personnel Today: "As a result of the amendments that some MEPs had agreed at last week's plenary session in Strasbourg, the final version of the report is now a...

2007-06-06 14:47:00
