Eurostar to bring investors to France
2008-05-01 02:00:00
Eurostar's new high-speed rail link to France could boost property investment in the country, according to experts. NuBricks.com said the new service between London's St Pancras station to Paris has led to a "substantial" increase in passenger numbers and revenues. As well as allowing Eurostar to compete more effectively with airlines, the rail link has also opened up markets such as Lille due to the reduction in journey times. The website stated that people from all over the UK are now choosing to take advantage of the improved connectivity, which it believes could lead to a surge of interest in France from property investors. NuBricks.com said: "As some areas of the European property market show signs of running out of steam, expect to see renewed interest in new destinations opened up as a result of Eurostar." This comes soon after Virgin Trains revealed that "more and more" people are choosing to use the railway as a means of getting to desti...
Eurostar to boost French tourist trade
2008-02-14 01:00:00
France's tourism sector is set to directly benefit from Eurostar's new rail link to Paris, according to experts.Travel company Thomas Cook believes that many British consumers will spend their Easter holidays taking city breaks in mainland Europe. The firm has predicted that Paris will be one of the most popular destinations, as it is now one of the easiest places to reach.Eurostar was credited with helping to attract visitors to the French capital, as it has recently introduced a high-speed rail link from London's newly-renovated St Pancras station. The service, which was launched to the public in November, offers faster journey times than the previous route from Waterloo and has proved to be highly popular as a result.According to currency specialist HiFX, the idea of quick passage between the two countries has even led to some people looking at relocating to France and commuting to work in the UK. Thomas Cook commented: "Eurostar's recent move to St Pancras [makes Paris] more a...

Improved Eurostar access 'would help tackle climate change'
2008-01-03 00:00:00
Making Eurostar more accessible to people in northern England could be good for the environment, according to a politician.Liberal Democrat county councillor Rod Fletcher stated that extending the reach of the Channel Tunnel would lead to more people choosing to travel abroad by rail instead of by air.He has suggested that a high-speed service between the north-west and London should be introduced in order to make the Eurostar network more accessible to those who do not live near the capital. In addition, he has proposed diverting some West Coast Mainline trains to the station at St Pancras instead of London Euston, as this operates direct routes to the continent.Councillor Fletcher said: "At a time when everyone is under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, some train services from the north-west must be integrated with Eurostar services to and from St Pancras to help combat cheap, low-cost airline services."According to the Daily Mail, the reduced journey time offered by the ...

London: The Eurostar Arrives at St. Pancras
2007-11-15 20:49:00
We’re psyched that the new and improved St. Pancras train station opened this week in London. The depot, rebuilt and improved with a $1.7 billion budget, boasts more than just slick rails. Indeed, St. Pancras Station boasts the longest champagne bar in Europe, its own underground shopping mall and—most importantly—the fastest Eurostar journey to date from London to Paris. (Trains also leave the station for Brussels and Lille.) We’re not, however, completely sold on the station’s PR: A daily farmer’s market in the downstairs arcade promises to be “Where the best of the British meets the flavours of the continent.” (Well, they’ve had their plates full.) We recommend taking a virtual tour of the station. On this side of the Atlantic, more “rail good” news as the U.S. House of Representatives last week approved $1.4 billion to keep Amtrak chugging along and improve track conditions. We’re glad to know our government, too, is finally taking...

Eurostar special: Pack light for Paris
2007-11-14 10:50:00
Eurostar special: Pack light for Paris Heading for Paris? You don't have to overpack to dress stylishly for the world's most fashionable city, says Hilary AlexanderIn pictures: The great get awayIn pictures: Six of the best travel cases The City of Light is just the place to discover the art of travelling light. No woman wants to announce her arrival in the fashion capital of the world by clumsily humping a 45-kilo suitcase along the platform at Gare du Nord. Fashion first: a model poses in a 'business' outfit A weekend away requires careful packing. The trick is to play it cool, be ruthless and take risks. Tailor your wardrobe to fit with what you're planning to do while away. Opt for luggage that can be stowed in the overhead rack of your carriage. The weekend break, especially the kind that involves trundling down train platforms, has been helped immeasurably by the arrival of the "wheelie" - not the ghastly bin that takes up half your front garden, but the cute suitcas...

Engineering through the ages: the Eurostar in St. Pancras
2007-11-14 09:15:00
Last week, the Queen was there to reopen the “Cathedral for Railways”, St. Pancras. Today, the Eurostar will arrive in its new British home. It is a landmark occasion: the restoration of St Pancras, a Victorian monument to Great British Engineering, meets the high speed Eurostar - the train that connects London with Paris. It is also the completion of 9 year ÂŁ5.8 billion channel tunnel project, and Britain has now joined the High Speed Rail club. This high speed connection links the UK with Europe. Calais is less than an hour away, making it faster to get to than Brighton. Paris is barely 2:15 away, closer than Manchester. This fast link to Paris and the ongoing TGV fast rail network, means most of Europe is now a few hours by train away.
Up Yours, Eurostar
2007-11-11 02:07:00
Dear Eurostar.co.uk, Thanks for the smug emails you’ve been sending me for the past few months, informing me that you’re moving your London base from Waterloo to St Pancras, which will cut 20 minutes of the journey time, but frankly I couldn’t give a monkeys. South London always gets overlooked when it comes to attractions and events, though the south is equally as good as the north. The tube doesn’t cover as much of our territory as in the north, but we manage anyway. Having the Eurostar based at Waterloo was a great boon to us long-suffering south-Londoners. Now you’ve taken that away from us. So I can honestly say that I wasn’t happy to get your cheerful email telling me that I’m “only 42 minutes from [your] new central London home” with a personalised journey planner from my home to St Pancras. I was about 30 minutes away from Waterloo, so the quicker trip to Paris from the new location won’t make much difference to me...
