Hispanosupremacists Infiltrate Evangelical Movement
2008-06-19 18:20:00 -By Frederick Meekins Minority activists and other guiltmongers often whine that 11 am Sunday morning is often the most segregated hour of the week. I wonder what the we-are-all-one-big family agitators have to say about the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, which bills itself as the National Hispanic Association of Evangelicals. Evangelical Manifesto
2008-05-07 12:37:00 By Doc MikeThis is hilarious! Christian scholars and theologians are releasing a manifesto today to "take back" the term Evangelical from the politicians. Apparently, it's starting to have a negative connotation in the world of politics. I wonder why?USA Today says in Manifesto aims to make 'evangelical' less political:"Evangelical" has been widely used to refer to Christians who have conservative political views, but the Evangelical Theological Society requires members to agree on just two points: inerrancy of Scripture, and belief in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as "separate but equal in attributes and glory" and essential for salvation. This really makes me laugh because if "Scripture" is nothing else it is errant. In fact that's exactly what my blog (By The Book Comics) is all about. And don't even get me started on the "holy trinity"... Evangelical crusader Charles McVety and Bill C-10
2008-04-18 22:33:00 It's always problematic when government bureaucrats attempt to play film critic. A provision in Bill C-10 if passed would allow bureaucrats from the Heritage Ministry to refuse tax credits to any film deemed "offensive."Canada's film industry already faces many challenges. The last thing it needs is petty government interference that would make raising financing for movies even tougher than it is at present. The thinking behind the Bill C-10 provision is somewhat vague. The Heritage Ministry has offered assurances that "mainstream films" aren't a concern. So movies such as Crash and Ma Fille, Mon Ange would be off the hook, despite some pretty graphic content ... which leaves you wondering what types of potentially "offensive" productions they have in mind.According to the Ministry, the proposed crackdown would apply to films or TV shows considered to be in violation of the criminal code. So what are we talking about here ... gang rape movies that end with ritual decapitation? To ...

Can an evangelical be at the same time intellectual?
2008-03-25 02:02:00 When I was a little boy I used to go to Sunday school to learn the Word of God through Bible stories; then I was taught to memorise the church's confession of faith. Every time I asked about the conflicts in science, culture and faith, the pastor would simply say that you have to accept Christianity by faith. Reason is always defective, but faith will lead you to salvation. From then on, I started to doubt the honesty and truthfulness of Christianity. In high school and in college, I tried to make sense with my Christianity by defending my faith against the attacks of reason and science. But I was frustrated of the inability of the Christian faith to be at par with science. Biblical accounts such as creation, incarnation, resurrection, miracles and many others are not scientifically reasonable, thus to be scientific implies abandoning Christian faith. My grandfather was a philosophy professor in one of the top universities in the Philippines, and he would always tell me that Christia...
The difference between Jeremiah Wright and radical, white evangelical minis
2008-03-20 19:15:00 Glenn Greenwald has an awesome column up on Salon pointing out that the hatred and anti-American sentiments expressed by right wing fundies, and more specifically Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are comparible and even worse than Jeremiah Wright’s. Ross Douthat and Ezra Klein are arguing about whether Jeremiah Wright’s statements are comparable to those of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and John Hagee’s. To argue that they’re not comparable, Douthat — like most people commenting on this raging controversy — conflates two entirely separate analytical issues: (1) Given their close and long-standing personal relationship, does Wright merit more scrutiny vis-a-vis Obama than white, radical evangelical ministers merit vis-a-vis Republican politicians? and, (2) Are the statements of white evangelical ministers subjected to the same standards of judgment as those being applied to Wright’s statements? It’s definitely worth your time to check o...

2008-02-01 02:42:00 Well, I predicted this was going to happen and got some pretty hateful comments on this one. These people have been doing this all across America since this filth went into public office. Copeland Ministries accused of 'shady' Huckabee donation Allie Martin - OneNewsNow - 1/31/2008 1:50:00 PM One of six televangelists targeted in a Senate finance inquiry is being accused of turning a recent pastors' conference into a fundraising opportunity for GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Last week, Kenneth Copeland Ministries held an annual -- by invitation only -- ministers' conference at his headquarters in Newark, Texas. The Trinity Foundation, a Dallas-based nonprofit group that monitors televangelists, reports that during a live webcast Huckabee called Copeland and requested emergency financing.Ole Anthony, president of the Trinity Foundation, says Copeland immediately adjourned the conference and then reconvened the group in a private meeting, in order to stay within guide...

Evangelical Idiots Need a New Constitution!
2008-01-18 06:01:00 Today's politics are all about understanding what your particular constituency specifically wants to hear. Once that has been established, the knowledge is formulated and then exploited to best serve the candidate. All politicians base their campaign strategy on that fact in order to get the most bang for their buck. Whereas I'm down with Hillary Clinton pounding my senses into submission by repeatedly claiming she has 35 years of experience doing God knows what, and how she'll use that experience to lead us around like lost sheep from day one as a result. I'm equally aware John Edwards comes from a family of mill workers. I seem to have heard along the way that Rudy Giuliani has some connection to September 11th. John McCain is a former POW and current elderly maverick. Fred Thompson is an actor thereby making him the sequel to Ronald Reagan. The Megachurch Juggernaut - Has an evangelical phenomenon shaken hands with
2007-12-13 00:57:00 by Maryann Mann It brought to mind the spectacle of Madison Square Garden. Sandwiched within the mammoth sanctuary, seating in the neighborhood of 3,300, I was like Jonah in the belly of the whale. Colossal projection screens displaying upbeat lyrics. Megawatt loud speakers blasting worship bands. The mood was kinetic, lit with spirit — a racial cornucopia of guests and members preparing anxiously for the pastor's morning sermon. Maybe it wasn't so bad after all. Before I knew it the reverend was on stage. He snatched up the microphone. He stepped out from the pulpit… and that's when my jaw was left hanging. Here I am — a visitor mind you — to the famous Brooklyn Tabernacle Church . Perhaps I could bring a good friend of mine here, he was looking for a spiritual home. But my friend is gay, and to my dismay, the pastor lambasted his kind. I listened as the minister praised election-season bribery over hate-bated, homophobic politics. Electoral "victory" in 2004 in the...

Evangelical acceptance on divorce
2007-11-26 13:03:00 Divorce is now so common that even evangelical Christians in the United States have begun to accept it (if for no other reason than that they themselves are divorcing all the time - even more so, in fact, than other people): Statistics bear out that divorce affects conservative Christians just as much as anyone else. A study this year by The Barna Group, a California research firm, showed that 27% of "born-again" Christians have been divorced, compared to 25% of non-born-again Americans. In 2005, Phoenix-based Ellison Research found that 14% of clergy have been divorced; the vast majority have remarried. But it has to be "biblically justified," of course: For many evangelical Christians, the line seems to have shifted from a single acceptable reason for divorce — adultery — to a wider range of reasons that some say can be biblically justified. "I am probably one of those evangelicals who would say it would be three A's for me," said Chris Bounds, a theologian at Indiana Wesl...

The Missing Link: "Y" It Matters
2007-11-15 23:32:00 One of the greatest missing ingredients in both families and churches is the "y"chromosome. It is undeniable that as a gender, men have a much poorer record of providing the stability in families and churches that is required. It is no surprise, therefore, that women are stepping into the roles that God clearly intended for men. This can be evidence by the trend in ordinations to the ministry in the Church of England. On his blog, Dr. Al Mohler cites sources in the British media that show in 2006 more women than men were ordained to the ministry in the Anglican Church. The Sunday Telegraph of London reported this year that if the trend of ordaining more women continues, by 2025 the number of male and female ministers would be about equal. Now while this may seem irrelevant to us American evangelicals, the record of men in spiritual leadership is not much better. Consider the following by Dr. Mohler:These are not unrelated developments, of course. The feminization of liberal Chri...

An Evangelical on Torture
2007-11-14 15:37:00 Over at The Evangelical Outpost Joe Carter tackles the question, "Who would Jesus waterboard?" His answer? No one. Who allowed our country to succumb to such fear and moral cowardice that we parse the the meaning and definition of "torture?" I blame myself, and implicate my fellow Christians. We have remained silent and treated an issue once considered unthinkable--the acceptability of torture--like a concept worthy of honest debate. But there is no room for debate: torture is immoral and should be clearly and forcefully denounced. We continue to shame ourselves and our Creator by refusing to speak out against such outrages to human dignity....As Christians we must never condone the use of methods that threaten to undermine the inherent dignity of the person created in the image of God. ... There is something clearly repugnant about our unwillingness to distance ourselves from the fear-driven utilitarians willing to embrace the use of torture. I've wondered "Where is the evangelic...

Huckabee Builds Evangelical Support
2007-11-05 17:40:00 As the 2008 presidential race heads toward the first nominating contests, Mike Huckabee is getting more news coverage, moving up in polls, and even drawing some attacks from other Republicans. Now the former Arkansas governor needs enough money to capitalize. Despite strong showings in a recent Iowa poll and a straw poll of evangelical voters Oct. 20, Huckabee has struggled to raise money to keep up with Mitt Romney, the Republican fundraising leader, and Rudy Giuliani, who tops national surveys for the nomination. Huckabee spent the weekend raising money in Texas, his second-largest source of donations from July through September. His appearances at churches in Plano and Irving on Sunday also highlighted a strategy of his long-shot White House bid: building support from evangelical Christians who make up a chunk of Iowa's GOP voters. "We're really grateful for the prosperity of Texas," Huckabee, a former minister, joked after preaching Sunday at Plano's Prestonwood Baptist Ch...
A Huge Evangelical Mistake
2007-10-31 13:53:00 Read the latest post from Chris Elrod? If you haven't, read it here before you go on.....OK, you back? Wasn't that encouraging? First, I don't know why anyone's sending him samples of their music. Second, those that did obviously respect his opinion and now have been bashed into hiding and I imagine quite a few are reconsidering their loyalty to Christianity. If they considered Chris worthy of hearing their songs, how must they feel now that their music makes his "bowels move".Personally, say it was me. I spent the first 30 years of my life in the secular world, doing as I pleased and really didn't have a care to go to church, even less to get involved. Thank God my wife changed all that and I started going. I'm glad my first trip wasn't to Compass Point. At first I might have got caught up in his hype, attended for a while and at sometime my wife would have convinced me to try getting back to drums (like she did). After reading that last post though and seeing the arrogance ...
Romney loses prominent evangelical endorsement
2007-10-24 18:05:00 Dr. Don Wilton, the former head of the South Carolina Baptist convention, recanted his endorsement of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney Wednesday, just days after announcing his support. The Romney campaign has touted Wilton's endorsement, along with that of Bob Jones University president Bob Jones III, as signs that evangelical leaders in South Carolina were putting aside reservations over Romney's Mormon faith and siding with the candidate based on his family values. In a statement released by Baptist News, a Southern Baptist publication, Wilton said he made a "personal mistake" and that, until now, he had never endorsed a presidential candidate. "While I did give my consent to the local campaign to use my affirmation of the governor's stance on family values in my capacity as an individual citizen, I made the mistake of not realizing the extent to which it would be used on a national basis," Wilton said in the statement. He added that: "I will continue to use my pe...
Big Shots, Born Again: A Look At the Evangelical Power Elite
2007-10-19 10:47:00 Once upon a time, a Protestant elite ruled America. Its members were not just any Protestants, though. They came almost exclusively from the "main line," a phrase borrowed from the affluent suburbs lining the Pennsylvania Railroad west of Philadelphia. Mainline Protestantism--encompassing the Episcopal Church, the Congregationalists and other liberal denominations--was far more than a cluster of churches. According to the historian William Hutchison, it "was a personal network" comprising "familial, social, and old-school-tie relationships," including such clans as the Rockefellers and the Niebuhrs. It helped to build such progressive institutions as the University of Chicago and Union Theological Seminary. It was also capable of great bigotry, barring Catholics and Jews from its social clubs and law firms. In "The Protestant Establishment," E. Digby Baltzell chronicled the "growth and decay" of the WASP aristocracy, describing its patrician families, elite boarding schools and I...

Evangelical Pastor Beats Up Another Pastor - His Wife!
2007-08-23 15:51:00 This is a "you've gotta be shittin' me" story showcasing our dear, sweet, evangeli-cals. Over the course of years, so many evangelical ministers are more involved in money and political power and forget about "being a Christian." In this classic example, evangelical pastor Thomas W. Weeks III had enough of his wife - - - met up with her at Renaissance Concourse Hotel near Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport - - - and proceeded to beat her up. A bellman at the hotel had to pull him off his wife. By that time she was battered and -;purple bruising around her neck and upper torso. This is where it gets really interesting. It was discovered that his wife, Juanita Bynum, is also a very successful Pentecostal evangelical whose fiery and frank sermons about women’s empowerment have won her a national following. She has parlayed her evangelism ...

Pentagon Punch Drunk over Evangelical Junk
2007-08-22 19:11:00 Investigations have revealed that the Pentagon has had a disturbing relationship with private evangelical groups. It also shows how our current administration ignores the Constitutional requirement of "Separation of Church and State." In the first incident, after an investigation spurred by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the Pentagon abruptly announced that it would not be delivering “freedom packages” to our soldiers in Iraq, as it had originally intended. The packages contained Bibles, proselytizing material in English and Arabic and the apocalyptic computer game “Left Behind: Eternal Forces” (derived from the series of post-Rapture novels), in which “soldiers for Christ” hunt down enemies who look suspiciously like U.N. peacekeepers. The packages were put together by a fundamentalist Christian ministry called Operation Straight Up, or OSU. Headed by former kickboxer Jonathan Spinks, ...
