EVANGELICALS - The evening descends

God-talk in the presidential election (or why evangelicals are voting for B
2008-03-12 14:28:00 by Dr. Lynn Schofield Clark When it’s time for politics in the U.S., it seems, it’s also time to talk about religion. So first there were stories of Huckabee’s success among evangelicals, and then there was the quelched rumor about Obama’s supposed connections with Islam (he is a member of the United Church of Christ, a liberal Christian denomination). Hillary Clinton received fewer stories about her Methodist faith, although she did speak of it at the Global Summit on AIDS at a large California megachurch pastored by Rick Warren (best selling author of “The Purpose-Driven Life”), according to one story. By far the most religion-and-politics coverage so far has gone to Huckabee. Indeed, Adelle Banks of the Religion News Service wrote a nice piece suggesting that Mike Huckabee could be a “Republican Kingmaker” due to his ability to appeal to the “new center” of the evangelical movement, which she characterized as interest...

Huckabee Schmoozing In Secret Meetings and Cayman Islands
2008-02-19 03:23:00 I got this great tip from a reader. Our friend Mr. Huckabee is involved in even more shady dealings than we could ever hope to cover. There are some deep pockets creating all kinds of 527 special interest groups that can’t be traced thanks to McCain-Feingold. The other problem is that there are tax-exempt issues ...

Why Evangelicals Support Huckabee over Romney
2008-02-07 16:21:00 No. It’s not because Romney’s Mormon and Huckabee’s Baptist. I contend Huckabee’s evangelical support goes deeper than that. The roots of his support are grounded in concepts the political punditry and main-stream media can’t seem to comprehend. Evangelicals are a multi-faceted bunch. We are controlled by a Scriptural, and highly moral ethic. ...
My God, Evangelicals are Dumb-bellicals!
2008-01-21 06:01:00 George Washington was always associated with never telling a lie. Jerry Falwell was always associated with never telling the truth. So as to who is the liar; my money is riding on Four Chin Falwell as opposed to the Father of our Country. I'm often confused as to what forces out there continue to perpetuate this obsessive, compulsive disorder known as evangelicalism, that a limited but vocal percentage of this country suffers from. The dictionary defines evangelicals as being in agreement with the Christian gospel. Also with emphasizing salvation by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ through personal conversion, the authority of Scripture, and the importance of preaching as contrasted with ritual. At first glance, an individual capable of thinking for oneself would assume the Christian gospel is a combination of bigotry, intolerance and narrow minded stupidity. But the Christian gospel is defined as glad tidings, good news, welcome information, a shout, or something that ma...

Young Evangelicals Embrace Huckabee as Old Guard Balks
2008-01-12 20:32:00 Much of the national leadership of the Christian conservative movement has turned a cold shoulder to the Republican presidential campaign of Mike Huckabee, wary of his populist approach to economic issues and his criticism of the Bush administration?s foreign policy. But that has only fired up Brett and Alex Harris. The Harris brothers, 19-year-old evangelical authors and speakers who grew up steeped in the conservative Christian movement, are the creators of Huck?s Army, an online network that has connected 12,000 Huckabee campaign volunteers, including several hundred in Michigan, which votes Tuesday, and South Carolina, which votes Saturday. They say they like Mr. Huckabee for the same reason many of their elders do not: ?He reaches outside the normal Republican box,? Brett Harris said in an interview from his home near Portland, Ore. The brothers fell for Mr. Huckabee last August when they saw him draw applause on ?The Daily Show With Jon Stewart? for explaining that he belie...

2008-01-08 19:20:00 Are pundits, political hacks, bloggers and the media stupid or just flat out liars? I keep reading and hearing over and over again that the reason Huckabee is doing so good in the presidential primaries is because of evangelical votes. That has got to be the most dishonest load of horse squeeze that I have ever heard. The reason and almost the only reason Huckabee is doing so well in the Republican primaries is: He is not a Democrat He is not Ron Paul and the FAIR TAX! I know most of you lying ass special interest shitheads will melt like the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz if you say the words FAIR TAX, but say it with me now, FAIR TAX If Fred Thompson stays in the race I will be voting for him, my second choice for the Republican nominee is Huckabee. Evangelicals Turn on Thompson
2007-09-27 19:33:00 Fred Thompson is failing to meet expectations that he would rally widespread support from Christian conservatives, and he almost certainly will not receive a joint endorsement from the loose coalition of "pro-family" organizations, according to leaders of the movement. Many religious conservatives, faced with a Republican primary top tier that lacked a true kindred spirit, initially looked to Thompson as a savior. But the former Tennessee senator has disappointed or just not sufficiently impressed the faith community since his formal campaign launch earlier this month. While Christian conservatives once seemed willing to readily give Thompson the benefit of the doubt earlier this summer, when questions were raised about his lobbying for a pro-abortion-rights group, they are not willing to turn the other cheek anymore. Even some on the religious right who remain sympathetic to Thompson are unhappy about his refusal to back a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and we...

Thompson Already Losing Key Primary Group: Evangelicals Hesitant About Him
2007-09-09 23:59:00 Prominent evangelical leaders who spent the summer hoping Fred Thompson would emerge as their favored Republican presidential contender are having doubts as he begins his long-teased campaign. For social conservatives dissatisfied with other GOP choices, the "Law & Order" actor and former Tennessee senator represents a Ronald Reagan-like figure, someone they hope will agree with them on issues and stands a chance of winning. But Thompson's less-than-clear stance on a federal gay marriage amendment and his delay in entering the race are partly responsible for a sudden shyness among leading evangelicals. "A month or two ago, I sensed there was some urgency for people to make a move and find a candidate," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a Washington-based conservative Christian group. "Right now, I think people are stepping back a little and watching. The field is still very fluid." A loose network of influential evangelical leaders known as the Arling...

2007-08-24 14:23:00 [Given that roughly half the eligible voters in the U.S. do not vote, a right wing Christian takeover is not all that unlikely — at least something to worry about — abortion, homosexuality, criminalized again, women rejected from the workplace and a variety of other disastrous moves — war on Islam wherever, preparation for the apocalypse with nuclear attacks here and there, exclusion of immigrants from schools and medical care. etc. etc. Don’t think these characters don’t have an agenda — or perhaps both public and secret ones — only born agains in the White House or on the Supreme Court? Among evangelicals, however, the priority was much different, a new survey found. Among various groups – including conservatives and liberals and blacks and whites – the latest Barna survey found that the most radical differences of opinion on what needs to change in America were between evangelicals and those who are not born-again Christians. Brazilian Evangelicals Jailed for Smuggling Money

Jews Boot Evangelicals Out
2007-08-19 22:26:00 An American evangelical pastor and his wife who have been living in Israel for nearly two decades have been ordered to leave the country within two weeks, after their request for permanent residency was turned down. Ron Cantrell, 59, and his wife Carol, 54, have run a small Jerusalem-based ministry, Shalom Shalom Jerusalem, for the past four years. Cantrell previously worked for Bridges for Peace, an evangelical organization, for 14 years. Two of the couple’s children have married Israelis and have Israeli ID cards. Interior Ministry officials said the decision was made following suspicions that Cantrell was involved in missionary work. The pastor categorically denied the allegations as baseless. Cantrell, who has been active in raising money for Israel as well as working on behalf of Soviet Jews, had resided in Israel on a special clergy visa during his work for Bridges for Peace, but then went back to a regular tourist visa, which needed to b...

KLAPPER GENEVA -- Evangelical groups have joined efforts spearheaded by Roman Catholic, Orthodox and mainstream Protestant churches to create a common code of conduct for religious conversions that would preserve the right of Christians to spread their religion while avoiding conflict among different faiths. The World Council of Churches, which joined the Vatican last year in launching talks on a code, said Wednesday that the process was formally joined by the World Evangelical Alliance at a meeting earlier this month in France. The code aims to ease tensions with Muslims, Hindus and other religious groups that fear losing adherents and resort to punishments as extreme as imprisonment and even death for converts from their faith and foreign missionaries. The Taliban kidnapping of 23 South Korean Christians in Afghanistan la...
Why Do Evangelicals Ignore Ron Paul?
2007-08-13 23:00:00 Evangelical Christians are already beginning the process of selecting the Republican presidential candidate whom they can anoint as their successor to George W. Bush. Somehow, evangelicals have this deluded idea that President Bush is one of them. How they came to this delusion both fascinates and escapes me. Bush is anything but one of them. However, most evangelicals believe he is, and today it seems that illusion is greater than reality, anyway. Bush proves that more than anyone I have ever known. But enough about Bush. The question burning in the minds of evangelicals today is: Which Republican candidate for president will we anoint? There are several possibilities, but apparently Congressman Ron Paul is not one of them. For example, Jerry Falwell's widely distributed National Liberty Journal, in its March 2007 edition, had a major section entitled "Campaign 2008-Identifying the Republican Presidential Candidates." A total of ten Republicans made the Journal's list. The ten...

Frank Pastore Liberals are predictably doing everything they can to win in 2008. Everyone knows a key part of their strategy is to “get religion” and trick as many Christians as possible to care less about the Bible, abortion and gay marriage and more about liberal policy positions: secularism, socialism, bigger government and higher taxes. This includes spinning conservative Christians with the yarn that their brand of Christianity is now obsolete and that “everyone important” is buying the “new and improved” progressive, emergent, sensitive, conscientious brand of Christianity that these new liberal Christians are selling. And, in order to become “cool, popular and relevant” once again, old Christian dogs will have to learn new liberal tricks. Nonsense. Conservative Christians aren’t becoming liberals. She and several fellow parishioners picked apart the garbage to analyze exactly how much and what kind of waste their megachurch produces, looking for ways to reduce the congregation's contribution to global warming. "I prayed about it, and God really revealed to me that I had a passion about creation," said Kirsop, who has since traded in her family's sport-utility vehicle for a hybrid Toyota Prius to help cut her greenhouse gas emissions. Some believe the GOP presidential candidates have strayed from the moral issues that are essential to the Republican party platform, including abortion and same-sex “marriage.” "The whole faith and values conversation is falling by the wayside," said the Rev.
