VPOD: Pleasing Pleats
2007-08-30 14:22:00 Fortuny was the King of Pleats and most costume museums have one of his pleated gowns in their collection. According to one source, his pleats were created by evaporation when wet and folded silk was laid on heated tubes. Not sure what method was used to get the amazing pleats in today's VPOD, but Bill Blass certainly appears to be channeling the master here!This Bliss Blass design is from 1975-1985. And I just love so many things about this dress! First, let's talk about its yummy color combo of melon and pink. Then, it's tea length. It keeps it understated enough to wear in the afternoon or during the cocktail hour yet it is most definitely elegant enough for evening, too. And finally, we have those amazing pleats! VPOD: Seeing Stripes
2007-07-25 16:04:00 I was at a private estate sale last evening and noticed a rack of beautiful fur coats, many of them spotted and striped fur from currently endangered species. Just wanted to remind everyone that in general, it is illegal to buy or sell garments made from endangered species even if they are considered old, used or vintage. The laws related to this can get quite complicated. While there are some exceptions for vintage items with proof of age, some state laws trump the federal law in strictness. The best rule of thumb is just don't do it! If you get caught, you could be punished with five years in prison and a $250,000 fine--double that if you're a business. No reputable furriers deal in endangered species and you shouldn't either--although it is perfectly fine to get that old leopard, ocelot, tiger or monkey coat restyled into a more contemporary look.And keep in mind that you can get the fashionable look of animal prints without even wearing fur.
