O, The Power; Beat the Evil Empire 1A, 11-6
2008-08-21 17:58:00 At the start of spring training, I surmised as to how the Orioles would score runs this year, much less win over 65 games. With the trade of Miguel Tejada was a little concerned about our bats; however, my concerns were perhaps greatly exaggerated.Last night, the Orioles downed the Red Sox, 11-5, exacting revenge on starter Clay Buchholz, who tossed a no-hitter against Baltimore last year. Right now, the kid seems to be a completely different pitcher from what I saw last September, as his stuff seems to still be good, but he's got very little command and cannot get guys out right now.The same could be said for last night's starter, Chris Waters, who didn't look that good either. He doesn't have Buchholz's pedigree, and he too had very little command or focus on the night. Perhaps we saw the real Chris Waters last night, and the start in California might have been an aberration, but he's got to be perfect -- or he will get hit. Despite his rough outing, he got himself under con...

About Last Night; The Evil Empire 1A Defeats The O's; The 50 & 100 Milliont
2008-08-20 15:48:00 It's hard to be an Oriole fan, and sit through the throngs of Red Sox fans who come down to Baltimore and invade Camden Yards to watch their team. Alas, I do it - not because I am masochist, but I like baseball in general and support the Orioles.Well, last night the Red Sox beat the Orioles 7-2. There's not much to say -- Cabrera got hit hard, and could not get anyone out; Boston's Daisuke Matuszaka didn't look all that sharp -- however, he challenged the hitters and got himself out of a crucial bases loaded situation in the third inning to help his team win. If you were an Baltimore sitting in one of the green seats on Monday or Tuesday, it was sometimes was demoralizing, but as a fan, you stick it out & hope for the best.In fact, the Orioles had chances to score, but Boston always seemed to find a way out of a sticky situation.Cabrera is now 8-8, after giving up six runs, and unable to get out of the fifth inning. The Yard was filled with 48,515 -- alas, to little consquen...

The Evil Empire 1A, The Red Sox, Roll Into Town Once Again...
2008-05-30 15:50:00 After taking two of three from the New York Yankees, the Baltimore Orioles have yet another tough customer rolling into the Yard -- the Evil Empire 1A, the Boston Red Sox.This will be the second visit for Boston in Baltimore, and so far, the Orioles are 2-0 against them. Right now, they are trying to snap a two game losing streak and are 5-5 in their last ten; moreover, they are only 11-19 on the road, so things may not seem so gloomy.Meanwhile, the Orioles are at .500 -- a feat that perhaps few expected for them even approach by June. Thanks to amazing pitching, timely hitting, and the knack for making a comeback, they are still five games out of the AL division lead.Despite Tuesday's amazing game, the Oriole offense is still struggling and that needs to improve against a patient Boston team that can mash.Matchups:Tonight: Josh Beckett (5-4, 4.43) vs. Daniel Cabrera (5-1, 3.70)Saturday: Jon Lester (3-3, 3.55) vs. Garrett Olson (4-1, 4.09)Sunday: Bartolo Colon (2-0, 2.25) vs. Brian...

Facing the Evil Empire...
2008-05-20 21:45:00 Folks, we face the Yankees up in the Bronx tonight, Wednesday and Thursday. Honestly, who would have thought before the season that on May 20th, the Orioles would be at 23-20, while the Evil Empire would be at the bottom of the American League standings? The Orioles had a nice little homestand, winning four out of five; meanwhile, the Yankees had their hands full with the Mets, as they were swept in two straight games. We here in the mid-Atlantic region are giddy; the New Yorkers up there are wondering what in the world is going on?Like I said yesterday, the next two weeks will tell a lot about the Orioles. Baltimore has been winning by excellent starting pitching, timely hitting and a "us-against-the-world" mentality. The Yankees have suffered through injuries, aging talent and lackluster pitching -- especially, on part of ther youngsters. There was a time where the Orioles would serve as a doormat for the Yankees -- however, this series might be a test for both teams. The Bronx may b...

O's Beat Sox Thanks To Jones' Walkoff Hit, 6-5; The Evil Empire is in Town:
2008-04-18 17:30:00 As we are in the third week of the season, I know one thing -- this team is a lot better than that was last year and I'm upping my win total to 70 for the 2008 Baltimore Orioles. The law of averages may perhaps take over, but so far, it's been good.On Thursday night, the Orioles had their backs to a wall -- however, they fought back against Bobby Jenks (my god is he huge -- he needs to go a Nutri-System diet or something) as the Orioles scored two in the ninth and Adam Jones had a game-winning hit in the 10th inning to give Baltimore the win, 6-5.The bullpen, which has been a tad shaky this week, pitched four scoreless innings and got the win. Jeremy Guthrie was solid -- until the top of seventh inning where he gave back to back home runs to get the hook. He allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over six innings.Nick Markakis hit a two-run homer for the O's to start the comeback on Thursday night.Well, this weekend, we get the Evil Empire in town. After playing their epics...

The Imminent Fall of the Evil Empire
2008-02-26 01:39:00 PerryScope: Perry DiazFor the last seven years since she usurped the presidency from Joseph Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo built an empire that fed on greed. And over that period of time, she spun a massive web of corruption -- and deception -- that centered in Malacanang. Corruption was institutionalized at every level of her government -- from the lowly paid clerk to the greedy influence peddlers and all the way to the top echelon of the Arroyo administration. Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada's testimony before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee was akin to the testimony of Joseph Valachi before the U.S. Senate McClellan Committee in 1962 when it investigated organized crime in the U.S. Valachi was the first Mafia insider who broke the "Omerta" code of silence and exposed the extent of the "Cosa Nostra" criminal empire. In the case of Lozada, he was the first "Evil Empire" insider who exposed the extent of corruption in the Arroyo government. In his testimony, Lozada talked about a meeting t...

Google is NOT the Evil Empire stealing content from real estate blogs
2007-12-17 04:01:00 I recently read a bunch of SEO conspiracy articles floating around the real estate blogosphere about how Google is "stealing" content, traffic, listings, clicks, leads, your first born child, etc. I even read one conspiracy theorist that actually suggested you forget about Google altogether because the Top Realtors in the country can't be found on the first page therefore, neither should YOU. I suppose it never occurred to this Realtor that the Top Realtors in the country have far more robust networks and far more dollars to throw at marketing than the average Realtor and therefore may not need the boost Google would give them. Now, for those of you that have thought about drinking this crazy Cool-Aid, let's consider what Google's role is and what it does for you, your website and your business and why you need to cater to Google to benefit from its services. The Evil Empire 1A (The Red Sox) to Add More Seats to Fenway...
2007-11-17 21:34:00 The Boston Red Sox in order to accomodate more fans into cozy Fenway, raise revenues and keep up with the original Evil Empire are adding 800 more seats to the old ball park.In addition, they are raising prices next season. They have made no secret what their goals are -- to make money and keep up the revenues so they can contend with the Yankees and their new ball park opening up in 2009.The Boston Red Sox are adding more than 800 new seats at Fenway Park as part of a slate of improvements planned for next season. The new seats and standing room areas for about 60 people will be added to the pavilion level, which is the third level of seating above home plate. The pavilion area will be extended down the first base line and the third base line, where about three-quarters of the new seating will be located, the team announced. In total, Fenway's capacity will increase by about 900 fans. The pavilion seats will cost between $75 to $90 and the standing room area tickets will cost $25."W...

NHL needs an Evil Empire
2007-11-15 00:29:00 George Steinbrenner is the new president and GM of the New York Rangers.I wish. The Boss won't be putting his unique stamp on the Blueshirts, but it sure would be nice if the NHL had an Evil Empire.Picture this: An NHL dominated by a perennial playoff team everyone loves to hate, helmed by ass-kicking, coach-firing wannabe Big Stein. Ah, it's nice to dream. However, other than Gary Bettman's smug little mug, what do hockey fans and players have to despise? The Toronto Maple Leafs? Gimme a break. Some say the comically ineffective Leafs are the most hated team in sports. But, c'mon, how can you really hate a team owned by a Pension Plan? Sure, the universally disliked Sean Avery is a target, as is mildly detested Anaheim Ducks' GM Brian Burke. These two don't hold a candle to George Costanza's nemesis, though. So, to generate some true revulsion for a dynasty - think the 1970s Montreal Canadiens - we have to get rid of everything that is wrong with the game.My colleagues ...

O's Dethrone the Evil Empire, Beat Yanks in 10, 10-9; The Rundown
2007-09-29 18:09:00 What a game! Wow. With a little less than two days officially left in the Orioles season, those who have given up on the team or have already flipped the calendar year to 2008 sure as hell missed an exciting ball game last. Despite the win-loss record, the Birds have not packed it in as of yet. The Orioles won last night in 10 innings, 10-9, thanks to some creativity by Melvin Mora. With the bases loaded, he dropped a bunt along the third base side to drive in the winning run. Since the Birds defeated the Yankees, New York lost the division the title to Boston ? the first time in nine years that has not happened. New York came armed and ready to go, as Alex Rodriguez had four RBIs; however, it was not enough. The Orioles? Jon Leicester got tagged hard as he gave up seven runs in about four innings of work, but Rob Bell pitched valiantly and kept the team in the game, and Chad Bradford earned the win. Jay Payton had a huge night with 3 RBIs, and led the rally in the 5...

The Evil Empire at It Again?
2007-08-31 17:59:00 We knew it was going to happen, but just a matter of when.Everything is clicking, the pitching has been strong, the All-Stars are playing like All-Stars, A-Rod is a beast, Jeter is Jeter, and yes, they have JOBA.Just when the ship looked like it was going to sink, and the high dollar contracts would prove futile and swallow the Yankees, they have stormed back. Now, they have overtaken the Wild Card lead from the sinking Mariners. After struggling for much of the season, the New York Yankees are back in a playoff position, sweeping the Boston Red Sox to take over the AL wild-card lead.Oh joy. I don't think they will take the AL East, but the Wild Card is theirs. As it looks right now, anything can happen...I'm sure not a Yankee fan, but you have to give them props for storming back and making something of the season. We all may hate them, but they play the game the right way, and the talent on that team is so good that it cannot be understated.I knew they were not going to be down f...

Is Google the Next Evil Empire?
2007-05-18 12:33:00 Recently I've seen a few interesting articles about Google. First, this Mashable post describes Why Google Is Making Us Dumber. I rely on Google extensively for work and I'm not sure how I was able to program before that (MSDN used to be a heck of a lot better than it is nowadays). And I certainly go by the slogan that Bart is typing above, "I will use Google before asking dumb questions." But I don't agree that Google is making us dumber. Like a commenter mentioned, it is a tool, like a calculator, which frees our mind for other computing tasks. You certainly can abuse it but it's not about to decrease your mental capacity. It may level the playing field a bit for those on the lower end, but there is still an art to crafting the perfect search. And Google will not help stupid programming mistakes like typing "Common" instead of "Common Files" in my stand-alone Installshield build which I banged my head on for hours (and wasted lots of Google searches on). Then Father Rod...

Evil Empire can?t disguise the fact that our kids outplayed them.
2007-02-26 21:45:01 And so it was, Chelsea won the trophy, Arsenal picked up 2 red cards and probably a host of fines and suspensions just to help out with our growing fixture congestion…not a great day in Cardiff? Well actually it was probably the proudest moment i have felt as an Arsenal fan. We sent out a side with an average age of 20, worth less than Michael Essien and proceeded to outplay the Champions of England for 90 minutes. Theo Walcott scored his first goal for the club with the sort of finish that almost guarantees he’ll be heading our scoring charts one day, and the midfield showed how football can be played. In Denilson, Diaby and Fabregas the future is already here, its clear to me that in order to accomodate them to the best of their ability that we will have to play a central 3 eventually but thats not a discussion for today. Cesc showed leadership all day, even if he didn’t dominate as he can, meanwhile Diaby channelled the spirit of Patrick Vieira and turned a...

2006-07-20 16:24:00 Do you remember the good old days when the U.S. used to be a world leader in human rights and was often seen and heard chastising other nations on their human rights records? Well it looks like we are day by day becoming that which we used to fight against. We used to fight against imperialist nations and totalitarian nations, and now we have become them. But, it looks like we are also becoming the big violators of the international human rights standards that we helped develop. That's right kids, Cowboy George and his posse have pretty much eradicated everything that this country once stood for, including human rights.Remember the days when we were the world leaders of the U.N.? Now we not only saddled them with a tyrannical ambassador (John Bolton), but we have now come under fire on our own human rights record against gays and lesbians. We were already in trouble over Gitmo and the myriad of human rights violations going on there, now a new U.N. report titled "Lesbian, Gay, B...
