Double Exposure Exchange Traded Funds
2008-04-09 00:40:00
If you ever watch BNN you're bound to see Howard Atkinson promoting Horizons BetaPro ETFs which allow you to "profit or protect" in an up or down market. Their lineup of ETFs are more than just index tracking exchange traded funds - they also return 200% of the daily performance of the indices in question. Not only that, they offer a Bull and Bear version of each "double exposure" ETF. The Bull version gives you 200% of the daily performance of the underlying index while the Bear version gives you 200% of the INVERSE daily performance. (Horizons BetaPro are not the only company offering double and double inverse exposure ETFs.)What does this mean? Let's say your index goes up 1% today. The Bull version of the ETF should be up 2%. The Bear version should be DOWN 2%.If the underlying index is down 2%, then the Bull version is down 4% and the Bear version is UP 4%.There is a reason they always stress 200% of the DAILY performance. You cannot just take the 1 year, ...

ETF Profit Driver - Another Reason To Favor Exchange Traded Funds
2008-03-30 19:05:00
Bill Poulos has developed a comprehensive course designed exclusively for use with Exchange Traded Funds. ETF Profit Driver consists of four trading methods that, when used with ETF's, offer earnings potential that will make you question why your capital is tied up in mutual funds. Based on a study conducted a few years back, about 10% of all long-term mutual-fund assets were held in index funds. Those funds offer comparatively low fees track indexes familiar to most investors. The drawback of index fund investing has been holding those positions during market downturns. In the past several years Exchange Traded Funds have started opening up significant new investment strategies. While ETF behave much like traditional index mutual funds, they have key differences. Exchange Traded Funds are actively traded on electronic exchanges, allowing you to open and close positions during market hours. They also offer highly liquid option chains, further expanding their use as an investment a...

Fancy Exchange Traded Funds for all Appetites
2008-01-30 10:42:00
ETF’s are a relatively safe way to invest in the stock market. It is often the preferred way to invest for inexperienced investors or those who don’t have much to invest. It allows you to diversify even the smallest of portfolio’s without the cost of buying many different stocks. With the markets in recession mode, here are some ETF’s that you might consider:MOO – Agriculture is one of the more bullish areas of the market and this is a good way to play the sector. This ETF has 3 of my favorite names in agriculture including Monsanto (MON), Mosaic (MOS) and potash (POT). A recent 15% pull-back presents a great buying opportunity.TAO – This ETF covers the real estate market in China, Hong Kong and Macau. While some of the high flying Chinese stocks and the major indices in Shanghai are due for a pull-back, China is still growing at over 11% and wealth creation is in full swing. As more people migrate to the middle-class, there will be an increase in urbanization, resulting...

Making Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) Work for You
2007-11-14 20:06:00
Exchange traded funds are index funds which have advantages over open-end index mutual funds. ETFs trade all day long on the stock exchanges, may be purchased through any broker, have lower fund expenses than mutual funds, and have less likelihood of generating unwanted taxable gains than mutual funds. (See The ABCs of ETFs – Exchange Traded Funds).     There are a number of reasons, which we’ll discuss, for investing in index funds (ETFs or mutual funds) but let’s start with the fact that the S&P 500 index beats 80% of all actively managed funds. (And, an index fund has lower expenses than an actively managed fund, further enhancing its net return.) If you can invest in an index fund and be in the top 20 percentile of fund returns, that’s a pretty good place to start.    You can construct a well-diversified portfolio entirely out of ETFs.  There are ETFs for almost every type of investment you can im...

The ABCs of ETFs - Exchange Traded Funds
2007-11-07 15:38:00
Every investor should consider Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).   The younger brother of open-end index mutual funds is growing up fast and showing greater versatility.   ETFs defined ETFs are open-end index mutual funds that trade like stocks (and closed-end mutual funds).    Types of ETFs There are three legal structures of ETFs: Open-end mutual fund (the difference between the ETF structure and a open-end mutual fund is the ETF is exchange traded, whereas the traditional mutual fund is purchased and redeemed by the fund itself), Unit investment trust and Grantor trust.   The open-end mutual fund structure has a diversification requirement, mandated by the Investment Company Act of 1940, which limit how it mimics some smaller or specialized indices and could result in a tracking error. The other principal difference for the investor is that other than the open-end mutual fund, dividends must be paid out in cash to investors (of cours...
Exchange Traded Funds (ETF): New Wave or Riptide?
2007-11-01 09:23:00
There was an excellent article discussing the pros and cons of investing in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in the July 3rd Wall Street Journal: As ETFs Seek Niches, Risks Rise (unfortunately, The Wall Street Journal doesn’t allow us to link to their articles, perhaps that will change after Rupert Murdoch buys Dow Jones.)
