Executions to resume after high court OK?s lethal injections
2008-04-16 23:36:00
WASHINGTON (AP) - The longest pause in executions in the U.S. in 25 years is about to end. A splintered Supreme Court cleared the way Wednesday, approving the most widely used method of lethal injection. Almost immediately, Virginia lifted its moratorium on the death penalty. Mississippi and Oklahoma said they would seek execution dates for convicted ...

Tim Kaine puts a hold on executions pending supreme court case
2008-04-02 20:07:00
Governor Kaine has put a moratorium on all executions in Virginia pending a supreme court ruling on the constitutionality of lethal injections. It’s time for Conservatives to pick a side. They cry and holler over stem cell research and a women’s right to choose but they’re all for murder and “playing God” when it comes to the death penalty. So which is it? Gov. Timothy M. Kaine ordered the moratorium on Tuesday in delaying the scheduled April 8 execution of Edward Nathaniel Bell until July 24. It is the 30th such stay of execution nationally since September, when the Supreme Court agreed to hear a Kentucky case that challenged the constitutionality of lethal injections. Other executions are not being scheduled pending the ruling, expected in late June. “That’s the pattern all over the country–dates are not being set,” Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, said Wednesday. Since the Supre...

What could have been- Al Qaeda executions
2008-02-19 05:58:00
Imagine how close we came to seeing this every day (Saddam was already doing it.) on a much larger scale. I'm glad McCain and Bush stayed with the surge. Story here. BALAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Video provided to CNN shows an al Qaeda in Iraq firing squad executing one-time allies -- fellow Sunni extremists -- who were not loyal enough to the terror organization, coalition military analysts said. Analysts say the video shows al Qaeda in Iraq operatives executing nine Sunni men deemed disloyal. In the video provided by coalition military officials, armed men wearing masks are shown standing behind nine kneeling men, all of whom are wearing blindfolds or hoods with their hands presumably tied behind their backs. The video shows the men being executed.Powered by b2evolution.

Executions in Iran
2008-01-21 12:27:00
Life in Mullahstan, where everyone walks happily in the light of Allah, as described by Maryam Rajavi of the Iranian Resistance: Three weeks into the New Year, the Iranian regime executed at least 23 prisoners, murdered a dissident student in the northwestern city of Sanandaj, executed another wounded prisoner laying on a stretcher in the northern city of Khoy, amputated limbs of five prisoners in the southeastern city of Zahedan, sentenced two teenagers to be thrown off cliff in sack in the southern city of Shiraz, she said. In addition it committed hundreds of other appalling crimes in fear of popular uprisings by the people living in miserable conditions: poverty, sky rocketing prices, governmental corruption and suppression, added Mrs. Rajavi. Of course, the NCRI (National Council of Resistance of Iran) is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, but still... NJ outlaws executions
2007-12-14 14:44:00
Makes sense, especially since the state hasn't actually executed anyone since 1963. I'm pretty wobbly on the topic of the death penalty, but if you're not going to execute anyone, why have a death penalty? What the death penalty cost the state since being reinstated in 1982.Former death row inmate, John Marshall, featured in the book, Blind Faith, gives his two cents.I interviewed this guy, who escaped execution after the death penalty was repealed the first time. Creepy guy. The issue of Thomas Trantino's parole was a frequent newspaper topic as the convicted killer was eligible for parole every other year or so. It became a semi-annual ritual in New Jersey that went roughly like this:Trantino would become eligible for paroleHis victim's families would mobilize against the proposalDemonstrations would be staged by both sidesLawmakers in Trenton would hold a hearingParole would be deniedExcept for 1988. That year two members of the state parole board, meeting in secret, granted ...

Executions Not Leading to Reconciliation
2007-11-24 21:59:00
by Dahr Jamail & Ali al-Fadhily* BAGHDAD, Nov 22 (IPS) - The executions of former regime officials are creating greater division, rather than reconciliation, among Iraqis. Special courts formed by the American occupation authorities in Iraq are issuing death sentences -- like that carried out on former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, on 30 December 2006 -- on what many Iraqis are interpreting as a political basis. "Executing Saddam cost Iraqis a lot of hatred and more division between the sects, " Walid Al-Ubaidi, post-graduate law student at Baghdad University told IPS. "Now they [U.S.-backed Iraqi Government] are executing the Ex-Minister of Defense, Sultan Hashim Ahmed, who was very well known for being a professional general who led the Iraqi army against Iran," Al-Ubaidi said, stressing that, "This man represents a symbol for the Iraqi army that defended Iraq." On 24 June 2007 the Iraqi High Tribunal found Ahmed guilty of presiding over th...

Indonesia to rule on executions
2007-10-11 01:37:00
THE fate of the Bali bombers and the Bali Nine could be affected by an Indonesian court ruling later this month.Indonesia's Constitutional Court today said it would hand down it's long-awaited decision on October 30.The legal challenge was launched earlier this year by several of the Australians on death row over the failed Bali Nine heroin smuggling ring.Their lawyers have argued the death penalty in Indonesia's narcotics law is unconstitutional because the nation's constitution affords life as a basic human right. If the court rules the death penalty is unconstitutional, it could potentially stall the impending executions of 2002 Bali bombers Imam Samudra, Ali Ghufron (alias Mukhlas) and the so-called smiling assassin Amrozi bin Nurhasyim.Indonesia's Attorney General Hendarman Supandji has said the government will implement the decision of the court if it ruled against the executions.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

15-Year Old Arrested in Newark Executions
2007-08-09 17:04:00
There's been an arrest in a story that's made me sick since I first heard about it Sunday night. Three friends, all enrolled at Delaware State University, were lined up against a wall and executed Saturday evening in Newark, New Jersey by being forced to kneel against a wall and then being shot in the back of the head. A fourth DSU student, the sister of one of the three slain friends, had already been shot and left for dead, but survived and has been helping police to identify the killer(s). Last night Newark police arrested a 15-year old male and charged him in the triple executions. Fifteen. It's an utterly alien world to mine in which 15-year olds line up three people - apparently encountered by chance - against a wall and execute them. And there's no way this monster acted alone. I hope there will be more arrests and a few more monsters removed from the streets of Newark in the coming days. I sure hope New Jersey has the death penalty. UPDATE The original link has...

Jakarta warned on Bali 9 executions
2007-07-29 09:03:00
PRIME Minister John Howard has warned Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono that Australians are sensitive about the proposed executions of the Bali heroin smugglers. After talks in Bali yesterday, Mr Howard said it was too early to seek clemency for the six condemned smugglers and Dr Yudhoyono said he would not commute their sentences as it was essential to crack down on drug trafficking.Mr Howard then said that he endorsed Indonesia's anti-drug crusade. The two leaders ordered a study on the feasibility of a free trade deal and supported closer economic ties. They also agreed to back measures to combat climate change during September's APEC meeting in Sydney.Dr Yudhoyono did not criticise Australia's recently reissued warning against travelling to Indonesia, which has angered Indonesian politicians. The warning stated that further terrorist attacks were imminent and Bali was a likely target.Curiously, Mr Howard welcomed a recent increase in the number of Australian visitor...

Haditha, Iraq: Cold-blooded Executions Spark Outrage, Echoes of My Lai, Vie
2006-06-10 23:10:00
To the soldier on the street in Iraq, a report of the killing of an unarmed civilian is another day on the job. These unprovoked attacks against Iraqi civilians seem to be an ugly side-effect of the rage and outrage of the daily horrors they face--or are they? The Iraq war--if it ever had support at home in the States--has a dismal reputation in the zeitgeist now. Add to that the spotty armament of the soldiers (unarmored Humvees, only recently updated body armor, and more), the U.S military presense stretched too thin to send even assistance during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, soldier morale as low as it can go, desertions at an all-time high, prisoner torture condoned up to the highest levels--all contribute to the maddening chaos. But what really makes a soldier crazy enough to open fire on children and the elderly? Or to obey orders to release Napalm-like phosphorus bombs on unarmed civilians?Reports of U.S. soldiers killing unarmed Iraq citizens are legion. Here are a few:Sa...
