2008-05-07 21:56:00 Something cool (or really not cool) from Amnesty Intl. Check it out if it’s near you! Dear Blabby, Amnesty activists welcome the cell to Miami Find out where the cell will go next! In the face of impossible odds, your thousands of letters made a huge impact last week. On May 1st, Sami al Hajj was released from Guantánamo Bay prison after six and a half years in detention. Al Hajj was a focus of our write-a-thon in December and was adopted by Amnesty groups across the country. Sami was a journalist for the television station al-Jazeera. In 2002, he was assigned to cover the conflict in Afghanistan. While traveling in Pakistan, Sami al Hajj was stopped by Pakistani police and detained. He was handed over to U.S. forces, taken to Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan, and ultimately to Guantánamo He was never charged with a crime, yet was held and allegedly tortured for six years. Tunnel becomes Banksy art exhibit
2008-05-03 23:13:00 The BBC wrote today: A disused road tunnel in south London has been turned into a giant exhibition space by graffiti artist Banksy. Murals in the Bristol artist’s famous stencil style appear with work by 29 other artists in a half-mile stretch of the tunnel in Leake Street, Waterloo. Images of Madonna kissing Britney Spears and a hoodie appear alongside installations of crashed cars. People can add their own stencil work to the tunnel walls in a three-day exhibition, opening on Saturday. Reclusive artist Banksy kept the tunnel’s location secret until Friday morning. ‘Filth pit’ He said the exhibition, known as the Cans Festival, aimed to “transform a dark forgotten filth pit” into “an oasis of beautiful art”. “I’ve always felt anyone with a paint can should have as much say in how our cities look as architects and ad men,” Banksy said. The installations will be removed after the event but Banksy said he hoped the ...

'A Paris museum acknowledged Friday that its own star exhibit crystal skull
2008-04-22 18:36:00 From: Skullduggery, Indiana Jones? Museum says crystal skull not AztecOne of only a dozen such skulls known to exist worldwide, the Quai Branly museum's piece was acquired in 1878 from an Indiana Jones-type explorer, Alphonse Pinart, as an Aztec masterpiece believed to be hundreds of years old, the remnant of an ancient and mysterious civilisation. But in a statement Friday the museum admitted the skull, rather than dating from the Aztec period, was probably made in the 19th century. From May 20 the Paris skull goes on view to coincide with the premiere at the Cannes Film Festival of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" -- the fourth installment in Harrison Ford's archaeologist's adventures since the 1981 blockbuster "Raiders of the Lost Ark". While the plot of the latest archeological epic by Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas remains a tightly-guarded secret, bets are the Indiana Jones movie will mirror Aztec beliefs surrounding the skulls. Legend has...

2008-04-08 18:13:00 Am I missing all the great fragrance advertising this spring? Please comment if you've seen a wonderful commercial; so far, most of what I've seen is pretty darned dull. Simplicated Series II Exhibit @ SM City Cebu Art Center
2008-04-03 09:07:00 Leopoldo Aguilar, Jr.'s "SIMPLICATED SERIES II"at SM City Cebu Art CenterNeo-Tribe Founder, musician and visual artist, Leopoldo "Leo" Ceniza Aguilar, Jr. mounts his "Simplicated Series II" paintings at SM City Cebu Art Center. His works are a collection of fine, purist forms in a very radical transition from the "art-brut" and folksy wood and soil paintings circa Neo-Tribe founding years..This abrupt transition could have been the offshoot his change of residence to urban Metro Manila from his "barefoot" work in tribal villages and communities in Mindanao and environs. Yet the materials and tools he uses in making these "corporate-looking" paintings are still the "crudite" applicators, like that used in henna-tattooing and naturally found objects such as stones and soil...Leo has syncretized his style of then to his "simplicated" forms, even thru his precise concentric circles, optical lines, we experience still the ethnic and indigenous thru his subjects and obvious forms..Exhibi...

The Lexus/Gran Turismo Exhibit @ The NY Auto Show
2008-03-25 10:36:00 Jalopnik has posted up a report on the various video game exhibits at this year’s New York Auto Show, including a Lexus IS-F special edition of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue: Lexus had three driving simulators set up running the highly anticipated Gran Turismo 5 Prologue that’s due out in mid-April. Since it was obviously a Lexus partnership, the only vehicle available to try was the Lexus IS-F…The first day of the show, the simulator was running a custom-build platform (meaning the developers sent out a special copy of the game just for the show), but Polyphony managed to overnight Japanese retail builds of the full game to be used on the simulators. A groggy representative told me he was up until 3 a.m. waiting for the retail build and setting up the simulators to properly work with a PlayStation 3 and the Japanese game. That a lot of midnight oil for a cross-marketing opportunity. In terms of cross-marketing, as the writer mentions, this could only be described as a c...

And so is it with Joseph Lofranco's latest works in his one-person show entitled, "Alteration of Compulsive Lines". It is another albeit a different set of a characteristically abstract visual script.A "compulsion" is a force that compels, an irresistible impulse to perform an act. Paris exhibit a children's guide to sex
2008-03-03 18:21:00 PARIS -- On a recent weekday, Clemence Dubreuil had no school because her teachers were on strike, so the 9-year-old begged her mother to take her to a museum to see a new exhibit about sex.If that all sounds very French, it is: Strikes are as much a part of the national character as frank talk about sex. But as the exhibit and the mild controversy surrounding it are proving, the cliches need some updating. The exhibit in northeast Paris attempts to respond playfully to the serious questions tweenagers ask about sexuality and romantic feeling. Inspired by a guide to sex by the popular cartoonist Zep and writer Helene Bruller, the exhibit also encourages children and their parents or teachers to shed all modesty and embarrassment about touchy topics and start talking.Via

ArtSunday: Impressionism exhibit offers a lesson in tradition and rebellion
2008-03-02 22:14:00 [An artist] should copy the masters and re-copy them, and after he has given every evidence of being a good copyist, he might then reasonably be allowed to do a radish, perhaps, from Nature. - Edgar Degas I went to see the “Inspiring Impressionism” exhibit yesterday at the Denver Art Museum and came away struck by how remarkably it addressed questions of influence and originality in art, issues that have long been central to my own thinking and writing. As a poet, I’ve long been aware of the debt I owe the masters whose genius has shaped my own work, and if my efforts pale in comparison, they’re at least less meager than they would have been had I not spent so much time in the company of Donne, Shakespeare, Yeats, Hopkins, Wright, Thomas, and perhaps most especially, Eliot.
