Walters Museum Exhibit - Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry
2008-11-24 01:14:00
One of the bedazzled piece at the Walters MuseumThe venerable Walters Museum in Baltimore, Maryland is opening up their vaults for Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry. The exhibit highlights the passion of Henry Walters (1848?1931) who collected jewelry from a large variety of cultures and periods. His collection runs the gamut from Mesopotamian stone pendants to masterpieces created by Tiffany and Co. The exhibition brings together more than 200 pieces of jewelry, combining extraordinary highlights from the holdings with objects from the Walters' vaults, the exhibit runs from now until January 4, 2009.All of this is enough to tell you, in very generic terms, that jewelry has mattered. None of it takes jewelry particularly seriously. Imagine if the Walters mounted a show that claimed to trumpet all the glories of the history of painting, without a single masterpiece on loan from somewhere else. You can't, because it'd never do it. But jewelry has fallen so far out of favor that just...
Pamela Yan Santos? Like Exhibit @ Blanc
2008-10-31 13:15:00
Pamela Yan Santos' LikeIn her upcoming solo exhibition entitled LIKE, Pamela Yan Santos explores personal history as known and remembered through various indices such as photographs, written and scribbled language and other signifiers that many of us consider as mundane.Working in mixed media and in layers, she uses the processes of serigraphy, painting and collage as components to a kind of visual syntax intended to essay personal episodes and remembrances of emotional significance. The approaches through which she interrelates the various processes make the works resonate as wish, as a point of comparison, as a mnemonic or as a conjunction, which are among the permutations of the word LIKE.From a personal perspective, the works bridge the artist's past and present by transforming events through time into a synchronous testament, expressing how agreeably or uncannily the two echo and mirror each other.Pam Yan -Santos graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Paint...

Rene Cuvos' Estranghero Exhibit @ Blanc
2008-09-12 10:00:00
Estrangheroa show by Rene CuvosThe sheer number of human beings in this planet assures us that a day can?t go by without setting our eyes on a face we?ve never seen before. There are hundreds of people that we see but never meet, as we walk the streets, ride a jeep, drink in a coffee shop or watch TV. Their faces are a blur, a blank, as we go about the business of living. We practically never see them---but there are a few that stick. There are a few faces that we never seem to forget. For some inexplicable reason, there is an intangible connection to the stranger whom we?ve never even spoken to, much less get near to. He or she must have reminded us of someone we used to know in kindergarten, for all that?s worth. There is an urge to stop, turn around and look closely to find...what? Who knows?Rene Cuvos explores this phenomenon in his new collection, ?Estranghero?. Each painting is a close study of a stranger?s character and personality. In ?Mangangaral? (oil on canvas, 24x18 inche...

" e n g K W E N T r O "a two- man exhibition of recent paintings byMangRobang and Philipp InesOpening on September 16, Tuesday, 6:30 pm at the Art Asia Galleryfourth level of SM Megamall.Josue Mangrobang has developed a distinctive style as a painter, producing canvases filled with "double images": detailed compositions rendered through transparencies, layerings, and interplays of positive and negative space. Mangrobang's works combine naturalism and stylization, the conceptual and the pictorial. His subjects and themes often revolve community and fishing scenes which comprise his environment as a resident of the flood-prone and coastal city of Malabon.A multi-awarded painter, Mangrobang is a national finalist in the 2008 Philip Morris Philippines Art Awards. He was also cited as a finalist in the water media category of the 2002 Metrobank Young Painter Competition and the 2000 and 1999 Shell National Students Art Competition.Mangrobang holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (major in Pain...

Pagbabakas Photo Exhibit @ UPFI's Ishmael Bernal Gallery
2008-07-20 07:37:00
PAGBABAKASA Sunday Love Affair (SLA) Photo ExhibitDespite their dire circumstances, seeing the people of Tondo live in the community they?re in and work in an environment that is less than desirable, is something short of amazing. Their struggle to make ends meet and live with what they can find in their surroundings is astonishing. What is even more surprising is that even in the midst of the chaos that surrounds them; they have still found a haven of sorts for their families. What can be observed is that usually, you see groups of people working, playing, eating and yes, even having fun together. It made us realize that no matter how difficult their situation is, as long as they are not alone, they can live through it, survive it. Pagbabakas in Filipino means partnership. Commonly a term used in business and in gambling? yes gambling. This term connotes being with someone in an endeavor or activity. For this exhibit however, our focus will be to show how the people of Tondo have b...

Tunnel becomes Banksy art exhibit
2008-05-03 23:13:00
The BBC wrote today: A disused road tunnel in south London has been turned into a giant exhibition space by graffiti artist Banksy. Murals in the Bristol artist’s famous stencil style appear with work by 29 other artists in a half-mile stretch of the tunnel in Leake Street, Waterloo. Images of Madonna kissing Britney Spears and a hoodie appear alongside installations of crashed cars. People can add their own stencil work to the tunnel walls in a three-day exhibition, opening on Saturday. Reclusive artist Banksy kept the tunnel’s location secret until Friday morning. ‘Filth pit’ He said the exhibition, known as the Cans Festival, aimed to “transform a dark forgotten filth pit” into “an oasis of beautiful art”. “I’ve always felt anyone with a paint can should have as much say in how our cities look as architects and ad men,” Banksy said.
