The ship was packed with over 4,500 refugees, Holocaust survivors, mostly women and children who were desperately seeking to reach the shores of Palestine in 1947. The British Navy ceased the ship in open water killing three refugees and sending it back to Germany where they were put in camps. The events triggered world-wide disgust and exposed the British policies for what they were… blatant interference on behalf of Arab interests to halt the creation of the Jewish State in their homeland.
