HULC Exoskeleton News or Better Living Through Technological Enhancements
2008-06-01 19:17:00
On May 20 we posted a story contributed by Deuce Project friend Amytronic about a robotic exoskeleton that allowed users to lift loads of around 500 lbs. (Here)Well, apparently robotic exo-skeletons are the new thing. Berkeley Bionics has started to accept orders for its HULC (Human Universal Load Carrier) . The HULC is a mobile exoskeleton that allows users to manuever effectively with loads up to 200 lbs.. Another interesting bit from this New Scientist article:More impressively, the 'proprietary technology' within HULC actually reduces metabolic cost. Wearing the HULC, you consume about 5-10% less oxygen when walking than a HULC-less friend. The effect is even more pronounced when carrying a heavy load. The link above also includes video of the device in action. So human enhancements are coming along. Between exoskeletons and body temperature regulating gloves such as the Core Control, human beings seem to be developing a new means of non-organic environmental adapatation. Intere...
Real Exoskeleton Turns Soldier Into Iron Man
2008-05-07 06:59:00
It may not be as well-equipped as the Iron Man suit, but this Raytheon contraption turns humans into superhumans. The hydraulics in the Exoskeleton provide tremendously increased strength and capacity to carry out difficult tasks. Its controls are even precise enough for activities as light as walking on tiptoes or playing catch. For more ...
An exoskeleton system that provides super human strength? Be afraid Dave.
2008-04-30 15:03:00
This exoskeleton system called HAL-5, developed in Japan, gives its user super human strength. The wearer is able to lift up to 5-times the weight they normally could. The suit reads the tiny electrical impulses from the muscles, sending them to the onboard processor which in turn activates the corresponding servos in the suit. Not ...
Exoskeleton developed at MIT

Bionic Man Becomes Reality with Exoskeleton
2007-11-26 15:00:00
In 2001 fourteen companies were bidding to make the first functional exoskeleton for the army. Now the hybrid man-machine has become a reality. I can hear it now, “We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better…stronger…fas-ter.” Salt Lake City based Sarcos is well known as the creators ...

Our Hermit Crab Molted His Exoskeleton
2007-07-26 00:00:00
Okay, okay. That must sound pretty gross to all of you who don't have hermit crabs. But, Hermie is really rather friendly. He (she?) likes it when I run him under the faucet and give him a shower. He comes out of his shell when I pick him up. He must be able to tell it's me. Must be my handling. Anyway, I thought you might like to see a picture! Yea! This is the first time I have ever seen this, too. It is no big deal. It is just his exoskeleton. They have to shed this in order to grow. Also, I found out that they eat it. Yep. Eat it. So, I put all the pieces back in the tank for him to eat. Don't let the picture fool you. His big claw there is not even the size of a dime. You should see him now, he is all pink and cute. Not all hard and brown like he used to be. And, from what I gather, it takes 10 days or so for his new shell to harden up. Well, enjoy the picture! :) Hey, anyone up for some buttered crab legs?

Ever want to be a superman, with super human strength, well the time may be coming for those that can afford it. The Japanese HAL-5 Exoskeleton suit was announced back in october, designed to assist disabled people in recovering their original strength what I don't understand is that its being targeted towards medical workers and nurses also. I personally can't see why a nurse needs super human strength. For those that don't remember the HAL-3 originally achieved the goal of helping the disabled people walk around with their own legs. In 2005 though, the HAL-5 was given upper body limb support as well as major weight savings and a much more compact power unit. The battery also increased longer life batterys and much smaller control units, along with a much nicer looking outer shell. The HAL-5 allows the user to hold 40kg load by arm and also increases the maximum legpress from 100kg to 180kg over the HAL-3, leading to the super human abilitys. But this news isn't about the ...
