Expectations of Greatness
2009-07-08 00:10:00 I had a wonderful conversation last night at Josie Woods Pub, conveniently located here in the city that never sleeps (but often feels like it's in a coma). We discussed what I believe is the coming Golden Age of American Soccer, compared the depth of the PGA field during the heydays of Nicklaus and Woods, argued about whether Tony Stewart's wrecking of Kyle Busch to win at Daytona on Saturday night was warranted and he explained to me what a blue line is. When the conversation got to football, the Giants and Bears fans asked each other one question. "What do you expect from your club this season?" "11-5," he said. "Division title and one playoff win." A very honest...
IT & Telecom Sector Expectations From Budget 2009-10
2009-07-06 06:15:00 The run up to the budget has already seen hectic lobbying by Industry wide representatives. For the last few days, various bodies have met the finance minister and have been handling their wish lists earlier for benefits, to see a revival in their particular industry. The Indian IT sector is no different and NASSCOM, the IT industry body is also looking for some relief in terms of budgetary sops in the upcoming budget. The Indian Tech sector has suffered mild setbacks from the Global Financial sector meltdown in the USA. A major chunk of clients comes from that sector. The heavy dollar appreciation has provided some relief for outsourcing biggies but even that has started to fade now. The IT sector is gunning for some major reforms in terms of SEZ (Special Economic Zones) schemes, FBT (Fringe Benefit Tax) abolition, issues of Service tax levied on software and other major decisions such as the extension of the STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) scheme for the next five year...

The Hornets Haven't Met Expectations
2009-03-17 14:25:00 I like the Hornets. They are a very good team that has a bright future. This year has been a decent year for them. But, in terms of expectations, this team has failed.Lots of people thought this team could progress to be a top Western team. They are not terrible, but they are in the middle of the pack. That can change if they play well though.Coming into this year, I thought the Hornets would be better to. I thought that a core of James Posey, Chris Paul, David West and others could be better than last years squad. I think everyone didn't take a long look at the supporting cast. They bring out decent players off the bench (Antonio Daniels, Mo Pete, and Julian Wright), but these guys just don't bring enough. I remember last year when Jannero Pargo could come off the bench and provide much needed fire power (and a rest for CP3). Daniels is no Pargo, that's for sure. Also, I felt the fire set ablaze by last years play by the Hornets is definitely out. Last year if you were going to p...

Investment Performance Expectations: WCM Fine Tuning
2009-02-19 23:51:00 by Steve Selengut Contrary to popular belief and Wall Street propaganda, investing is not a competitive event. Rather, it is a uniquely personal, goal-directed activity that individuals must organize and control for themselves. Expectations from Obama
2008-11-23 06:33:00 Anwar Syed Much in America and elsewhere is going to change as Barack Obama?s term as president of the US rolls along.Political observers across the world have been asking how his presidency would affect their countries. Our own commentators have wondered what changes his administration might make in American policy towards Pakistan. They all hope the change would work to Pakistan?s greater advantage. In order to think intelligently about America?s future transactions with Pakistan, it would be useful to identify the point of departure, to see what the general pattern of their relations during the last 50 years or so has been. We may begin with the well-known maxim that nations have interests but they do not have permanent friends or enemies. Barring brief interludes when President Woodrow Wilson?s high idealism, or isolationism, influenced American thinking, this maxim has guided its foreign policy through much of its history.Note also that not all interests are equally vital, and s...

Great Expectations Tables For November 3
2008-11-04 05:16:00 National polls show Obama ahead by 7 points. Two weeks ago, he was ahead by 8 points. McCain has gained only 1 point nationally in spite of a last-minute surge in some swing states, and the race seems to be over.New polls suggest that while McCain is closing the gap or back in the lead in a number of states, those are for the most part states that he never should have been behind in in the first place. Almost all of this movement has come in the past week or so.It is hard to say what caused this movement, though a friend of mine said that Democrats never surge at the end, and Republicans always do. Furthermore, Republicans are going absolutely balls-out to smear Obama are the ultimate in evil with a tidal wave of negative crap, lies, rumors and bullshit. The Net is awash with this stuff. The Obama Is Evil Timeline (my characterization) is an excellent example.Though I am staunchly pro-Obama, this work was so well-done that it actually had me thinking I was going to vote for McCain (...

Obama's "Low Expectations Presidency" Begins
2008-10-20 18:35:00 Our corporate media cousins are up to their usual tricks in this AP ?story? by Jennifer Loven that appeared over the weekend (why at least the qualifier ?analysis? wasn?t stuck in here somewhere is a mystery to me ? this reminds me a bit of this Atrios post today about how those all-knowing fonts of wise discourse, or so they would have us believe, are already trying to concoct their narratives on Obama before he?s even sworn in)?WASHINGTON (AP) _ For all Barack Obama's talk about change, there are signs that in style ? if not substance ? a new White House under Democrat Obama would operate much like the current one under President Bush.Think discipline, efficiency and secrecy. These are hallmarks of Obama's campaign, just as they have been for the last eight years in the leak-proof, tightly managed Bush administration.?Obama, like Bush, demands an orderly shop.Aides are expected to be both tightlipped and tight-knit. They get a "no drama" speech upon hire. And even if that rule i...
Great Expectations Tables For October 9
2008-10-10 02:30:00 McCain seems to have reduced Obama's a bit, and Obama's big lead in some key states seems to be declining. Last week Obama was up by about 6.5% nationally, and this week he's up by about 5.5%. McCain's attack mode paying off a bit? Overall though, there has not been much change in this chart in the past few days. Seems to be solidifying wherever they are.Colorado is back in the McCain column as Obama is now up by 3 there. Pollster.com's average has Obama up by 2.7%. But McCain can definitely still take Colorado, so Obama should not abandon the state. McCain is losing 13% of Bush voters there.New Hampshire, very close for a long time, has pulled away for McCain in a major way. He's now up by 11 points there and it looks hopeless for McCain. New Hampshire is not nearly as conservative a state as people think it is, and a lot of people from Massachusetts have been moving to the southeast part of the state recently. McCain is losing a 11% of the Bush voters in New Hampshire. That...

Stock Market Expectations - Credit Intrigue
2008-10-01 13:50:00 Does anyone find it odd that each morning that an inevitable bailout bill vote is pending, the stock market futures point down? And each morning that the bailout bill seems doomed, the stock market futures point up? Am I crazy or is the stock market telling government to stay out of the way? Sure, eliminate the manipulations and regulatory intrigue and then stay out of the way. All the news stations are suggesting that a deal has been cut, and that a Senate vote will take place tonite after sunset to pass a third version of the bailout (now rescue) bill. This bill raises the deposit insurance levels for FDIC insured accounts, and features more "rescue" language and less bailout. Conservative writers are saying "no" to anything except letting the market work it's own way out of this jamb. Liberal writers are hesistant to back the Bush administration, but do like the idea of a whole lot more government. On the political front, it would appear that many of the house members...

Media Expectations Won?t Matter Much to Most Voters Watching Debates
2008-09-26 21:48:00 Oftentimes when we who write about politics talk about the debates, we evaluate how well a candidate has done based upon our expectations of his performance. Great Expectations Tables For September 13
2008-09-13 09:08:00 McCain is now doing as well as expected in Idaho, where he was losing 15% of his vote to Obama. It's probably the Palin redneck factor that pulled those Bush voters back to McCain. However, with a new poll in Wyoming, McCain is losing 15% of the Bush vote to Obama, even after Palin. Great Expectations Tables For September 12
2008-09-12 09:48:00 Here is the new Great Expectations lineup for September 12. This table looks at which candidates are doing dramatically worse than expected or dramatically better than expected, by how much and in what states. In each case, you can spin in the other way and say that the opposite candidate is doing much better than expected. For instance, in Colorado, McCain is doing 10 points worse than expected, and Obama is doing 10 points better than expected. 10% of the electorate that voted for Bush is now backing Obama, or McCain is losing 10% of the electorate that went Bush. If you look at the actual Republican vote percentage, 20% of Bush voters are now going Obama in Colorado. With a new poll, McCain is actually performing better than expected in Alaska. That's completely due to the addition of Sarah Palin. McCain is up by 31 points in Alaska now.McCain is also now up by 11 points in Montana. That's also due to the Palin pick. But 17% of Bush voters are still leaning Obama.McCain also pick...

Expectations: Is It A Human Weakness?
2008-08-11 04:33:00 I happen to catch a glimpse of CNN news this weekend. There were two stories, I couldn?t erase off my mind and it prompted me to write today?s post.1. Parents kill their 3 children and commit suicide. A couple poisoned their three young children, and then hung themselves from a ceiling fan because they were HIV-positive. (I wonder what went through the relatives minds when they stood by their caskets.)2. Father kills daughter over divorce. The police said the father was angry because he felt his daughter was disgracing the family! If I am to be cut and dry about these stories, I think it all revolves around expectations. First incident, the parents were depressed because they were not getting expected results from the medicine. Second, father?s expectations of his daughter (possibly, religious and cultural expectations). Isn?t it about how these people reacted to their expectations? In the context of self improvement, much has been said about attitude, goals, productivity etc. Rarely ...

2008 Mugello MotoGP Race Report - Great Expectations
2008-06-02 16:52:00 Expectations are a double-edged sword. Expectations, the expectations you have of yourself, and the expectations that others have of you, can inspire you to remarkable achievements. But wanting to live up to those expectations can also place an incredible burden upon you, knowing that you if you fall short, you disappoint not only yourself, but also all those around you. The way you handle that burden is a test of character, self-knowledge, and mental strength. All professional sportsmen and women face this burden, but for one reason or another, it is heavier in some sports than in others. Sometimes, it is the popularity of the sport which bears upon the protagonists: a Brazilian striker in the World Cup knows that he carries the weight of tens of millions of fans with him. In some sports, it is the lack of margin for error which imposes itself: with just under 10 seconds to win a race in, a sprinter has to get everything right, from start to finish; the slightest hesitation and y...

2008-05-26 23:51:00 Bids for Singapore residential site fall short of expectations URA closes tender after top bid of just $203 psf ppr for the 99-yr leasehold site By EMILYN YAP A RESIDENTIAL site in Choa Chu Kang Drive has attracted a top bid of just $203 per square foot per plot ratio (psf ppr), reflecting weak sentiment in the property market. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) yesterday closed the tender for the 99-year leasehold site, which has a maximum gross floor area of 572,600 square feet. The tender drew five bids - Tian Hock Properties came out tops with an offer of $116.01 million, or $203 psf ppr. This was 7.4 per cent higher than the next highest bid - from Sim Lian Land, at $108 million or $189 psf ppr. The lowest offer came from HHA Properties - at $80.2 million or $140 psf ppr. Analysts had expected bids ranging from $230 to $270 psf ppr, or $131.7 million to $154.6 million in all. ‘The lower quantum of the bid prices is a reflection of the current subdued mood in the res...

Relationship Expectations
2008-05-07 09:55:00 Often the reason for disharmony in a relationship is the level of expectation from one or both partners. It stands to reason that if one partner expects very little from the other then they will indeed be extremely happy if their expectations are exceeded, which most likely will happen. However, if someone in a relationship has high expectations, then their partner may struggle to fulfil those elevated desires. This can have a two-fold impact. Firstly the partner with high expectations will feel frustrated and disappointed if their expectations are not met. Secondly, their partner will feel hurt and stressed at failing to live up to what their partner demands from them. This will of course put strain on a relationship. I think the answer lies somewhere between what a person expects and what their partner can realistically provide. With a little bit of practical evaluation of one’s expectations, it is possible to change them slightly to make them more accessible f...

Bills WR Hardy Faces Lofty Year One Expectations
2008-05-05 14:44:00 Hardy's rookie task a tall order: score often (Photo Source) Score. The Buffalo Bills could not do enough it of last year, but as a junior wide receiver at Indiana University, James Hardy did plenty of it. In 2007, Bills quarterbacks (helped out once by running back Marshawn Lynch) threw 12 touchdown passes. In 2007, Hardy notched 16 receiving touchdowns by himself. So, naturally, Hardy's rookie season in Buffalo comes with lofty expectations. He is very likely to start immediately next to veteran receiver Lee Evans, who also saw a significant statistical drop-off last season. Hardy's 6'5", 217-pound frame makes him a full head taller than any other Bills receiver; and, because of that height, Hardy's expectations are even larger than normal. What, then, can be considered a "successful" rookie season for Hardy? We've heard all of the cautions about rookie receivers and how they generally don't produce in their inaugural NFL campaigns. ...

Jacksonville Jaguars Draft: Expectations vs. Reality
2008-04-29 06:10:00 There they are, the five selections of the Jacksonville Jaguars 2008 draft. The class that has the imposing task of taking the team over the hump and to the Super Bowl. Derrick, Quentin, Thomas, Trae, and Chauncey have the highest of expectations considering the relative lack of companions in their rookie class. Thomas, Trae, and Chauncey especially. First, let's take a look at what my expectations were for the Jaguars draft and let's see if we did what was necessary. At least one top "10" Defensive End: The Jaguars, in my opinion, must anchor their pass-rush around at least one defensive end rated in the top 10 at the position. If they wait until later, the likelihood of getting the impact that the team needs to bring pressure decreases. I'd say we did that alright. Rather than get one "top ten" defensive end, we got the third and 5th best ends on the board. There are some who had Harvey ranked higher than Ghoulston (though I do... |
