Rend Collective Experiment ~ Music
2012-01-29 20:11:00
About a month ago I came across the Irish worship band “Rend Collective Experiment“. I really enjoyed the clip I had seen and found their latest album “Homemade Worship By Handmade People“. Their music picks me up when the day seems to unravel at work. I hope you will find time to check them out. ...
RACISM IN MEXICAN CHILDREN
2011-12-30 16:12:00
A video for an anti-racism campaign sponsored by the Mexican government is raising all kinds of eyebrows, and hopefully, awareness about the deep-rooted social issue. The almost four minute long piece captures a handful of responses from Mexican children that are asked to differentiate between a white doll and a black doll. When asked loaded questions like which doll is ugly, bad, good, trustworthy, etc., the children almost always attributed the negative qualities to the black doll. Ricardo Bucio Mujica, President of The National Council To Prevent Discrimination, points out that the experiment is meant to highlight some very real social stigmas and perceptions:

The Baby Experiment
2011-10-17 03:27:00
I visited my college friend, Barfman, who lives in Annapolis and works at The United States Naval Academy. The dormitory looks like mine at UVA, only the opposite Barfman has a seven-month-old little human, a.k.a. baby boy. I enjoyed spending time with this curious little human. He is intrigued by the world around him, likes to smile, make gibberish sounds, and lick my feet. Barfman has significant power over how this little human will turn out, and I would like to experiment with it. If we (what, I don't have any say?) decide he should be outgoing, then we let him roam around and hope he doesn't get lost or eaten. If we want him to be a cagefighter then we let him play with toys until he inevitably injures himself, and then reward that behavior with puréed squash and luxurious diapers. This could be so much fun. When I mentioned how cool it was that he has so much control over his little human, Barfman agreed but added, "In many ways he controls my life."

Deja vu experience: CTA OKs experiment with 2 electric buses
2011-04-18 02:28:00
This electric bus is being tested in Burbank, Calif. When I saw the Tribune and Sun-Times reports Friday about the CTA buying two electric buses to test on the mean streets of Chicago, I thought to myself, "That's not news. We wrote about that late last year."And for once, my memory was right. CTA Tattler and the major dailies indeed had reported in October about the $2.2 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to cover the cost of two 35-to-40-foot electric buses and the electric-charging equipment. It turns out that the real news Friday was that the CTA board formally amended it capital budget and authorized the purchase of the buses....
How would the Bulls have fared with a healthy Noah? Let's experiment.
2011-02-23 05:01:00
Joakim Noah/Getty Images File PhotoIt's appropriate that Joakim Noah looks somewhat like a mad scientist with his wild hair and mischievous grin--because he's part of an experiment RedEye has conducted. How badly did the Bulls miss him?Yes, we know there are other factors involved besides points and the fact that players don't always play to their averages, but if Noah hadn't missed 30 games to injury, the Bulls could potentially have compiled the best record in the NBA. "If" being the key word in that admittedly long sentence. We approached the Noah question like a science project, and here's how it turned out.QUESTIONHow did the loss of Joakim Noah affect the Bulls' bottom line: their record?HYPOTHESISThe Bulls would not have lost many of...
Human Experiment: Labor cookies!
2011-02-01 00:14:00
My friend Nicole pointed me in the direction of a recipe for labor cookies. Hey, why not, right? Maybe I go into labor, and if not I get to eat a bunch of cookies. I modified the original recipe (of course) to double the spices. Labor vibes times TWO!Here's my version: 2 1/2 cup flour 1 1/2 t. baking soda 1.5 t. cinnamon 2 t. ground ginger 1 t. ground cloves 1/2 t. salt 1 t. cayenne pepper 8 T. butter (that's one stick!) 1/2 c. sugar 1 c. brown sugar 1/3 c. molasses 1/4 c. egg whites Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, baking soda and spices and set aside. Cream the butter and sugars together. Add the molasses to the creamed butter, then add the egg whites until combined....

NO SOAP? NO SWEAT!
2011-01-06 22:20:00
After stumbling onto the work of Richard Nikoley's Free The Animal site, blogger, Sean Bonner, was inspired to conduct an animal-inspired experiment of his own--one year without any soap or shampoo! You can read about his results here. Both he and Richard Nikoley argue that soaps disrupt the natural pH balance of the body, the very thing that keeps our skin and hair looking, feeling, and smelling best. Now that's brave!
Blackhawks: It's Time for The Kyle Beach Experiment to Come to Chicago
2010-12-16 19:36:00
If the skaters on the ice on Thursday are any indication of what fans can expect to see when the puck drops on Friday night, the Hawks will be without Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane and Viktor Stalberg when the Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings come to town. Ugh. Add to that firepower being out the reality that the Hawks have been flat for a couple weeks and, especially in their last two games against Colorado, have lacked any spark at all, and the Blackhawks are in serious need of an emotional boost. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the Kyle Beach Experiment to hit the United Center....
Foursquare Experiment
2010-11-28 23:30:00
I'm trying a new experiment and I need your feedback to help me determine whether it is successful.  Over Thanksgiving dinner we had a discussion about social media and one of the things that came up was the Foursquare application.  For those who don't know, it is an app that allows you to "check-in" on your mobile device at certain locations and share that information with your friends via Facebook, Twitter etc.As a straight check-in app, there doesn't seem to be much use to it beyond notifying people of where you are, something that I'm not especially keen on (I think there are more cons than pros to announcing publicly where you are all the time).  However, the different features...
Google Eyes Offline, Real World Marketing With Goggles Experiment
2010-11-17 08:50:00
Google Goggles has been around for a year now. While the concept of visual search is not entirely new, the last 1 or 2 years has seen some fascinating applications like Augmented Reality and QR codes. The QR code space has gotten a little crowded and with the lack of standardization across different companies that make these codes, there is a risk of too much fragmentation. Google may have broken new ground with a simple experiment involving Goggles and some real world marketing campaigns. Google’s blog announced the experiment last night. 5 brands will work Goggles to “extend their offline marketing campaigns into the mobile web”. So far Buick, Disney, Diageo, T-Mobile and Delta Airlines have signed up to be a part of it. What they’ve done is ensured that some of their ads themselves are “Goggle Enabled” so when you shoot them through the app it gives the user the option to click on a link that will take them to the mobile web part of the campaig...

The Series LLC Experiment ? Looking for Guinea Pigs
2010-10-28 22:38:00
When it comes to asset protection, I always tell my students and clients that segregating dangerous assets from each other is a sound strategy to limit overall risk exposure.  Best practice dictates that each asset should have its own entity.  For many people this could translate into to a multitude of business entities. For example, just yesterday I spoke to an individual who owns over 30 properties.  If this investor desired complete asset segregation he should create 30 separate Limited Liability Companies.  This would surely translate into an annual cost of over $6,000 in state fees.   Now depending on your risk tolerance level, $6,000 may be considered cheap insurance given that the cost breaks down to only $200 per property.  For many, this is a bargain given today’s hostile business environment and personally, I would agree.  However, some investors who live in a state with high annual business fees, such a structure may not be financially practical.  Thus, the desired ...
Golf Channel's Social Media Experiment needs tweaking.
2010-09-20 16:33:00
Some golf fans enjoyed Golf Channel's social media "experiment" on Saturday while others claimed that the format just "did not work" but one thing is for sure; kudos go out for trying! Golf Channel's Twitter acknowledgment that their announcer-lite format might need work, "Don't worry we have announcers today," was merely a response to angry viewer commentary on the Q and A forum. Sound issues from mic noise and the lack of narration from the broadcasters actually detracted from the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open. Here are a few fan complaints about the Golf Channel announcer-lite Satuday: Mark Boyd Said on 09/18/2010, at 6:18 PM EST ?This simply does NOT work!! Should have learned after the NFL tried this tears ago - didn't work for them either!!!!? albegolfin Said on 09/18/2010, at 6:15 PM EST ?we watch golf every weekend. Will the Golf Channel Social Media Twitter Experiment be a success?
2010-09-17 17:57:00
credit Golf Channel will go "non-traditional" in it's Nationwide Tour coverage this Saturday; light on the announcers and heavy on the social media interaction. ?If it works, it could be to golf announcers what reality TV was to actors," according to Golf Channel announcer Stephanie Sparks. Sparks and Kay Cockerill will be on the 13th and 15th tees doing player interviews and Jerry Foltz and Curt Byrum will limit their comments on air but will interact with viewers "via social media channels such as Twitter," according to a network release. You will also hear commentary directly from the caddies and players as the final four pairings will be equipped with a boom microphone. Will this Twitter, Facebook social media experience have golf fans frantically typing away on their smart phones interacting with announcers or will the experiment prove to be a flop? Television commentary has been known to be dry at times so why not spice it up, chatting back-and-forth with an extended au...

What To Make Of Chicago's Performance Pay Experiment?
2010-06-01 15:50:00
EdWeek notes that an evaluation of the first two years of Chicago's performance pay program shows little benefit, which is no particular surprise.  But I'm wondering what we can learn from the experience.  How did it affect things in schools, if at all?  Did it encourage more teamwork and effort, or just more test prep?  There were only about 30 schools in the pilot, which was funded by the USDE through a program called TIF and modeled on something called the Teacher Advancement program.  Anyone at one of the TIF schools want to share their experience?  ...

Did The Grizzlies Find The Antipathy of The Allen Iverson Experiment?
2009-12-21 15:30:00
The Memphis Grizzlies have started to pick up their play of late. While they're only 6-4 in their last 10, the heart, effort and togetherness that they're playing with is impressive. On Sunday afternoon the Billups-less Nuggets came in and the Grizzlies had their way with them in the first half. Even though they let the Nuggets make a comeback, remember the Grizzlies are a young team. Still, they played slightly above their talent level, which is a must. All of this makes me think that Lionel Hollins has enabled the Grizzlies to make a positive out of the Allen Iverson negative. AI came in, wasn't committed to the team's purpose and hurt the team early on (2-8 start). But the Grizzlies came out of that with their heads up. OJ Mayo talked to NBA TV back on December 8th and said that, after AI left, the team ended their huddles saying, "one team." They honestly are as close to that as ever. The cohesion is better than it's ever been, the ball moves around and they have picked thei...

Google Launches Image Swirl Experiment – How Far Will It Swirl?
2009-11-18 07:19:00
Have you ever used Google Image Search to look for ‘Apple’ the fruit and instead find yourself sifting through scores of Ipods, MacBooks, Iphones and a certain Mr. Steve Jobs before finally finding that, literally, forbidden fruit? Well, then you’d better hope that Google’s latest Labs Experiment -> Image Swirl is a big success. What does it do? It takes potentially ambiguous image searches and tries to organize/separate the results into 16 distinct categories. It relies on metadata and other image similarities to achieve this. To some extent this is similar to wonder wheel which is available as a part of Web Search. The quest for the apple on this experiment ended like this. 2 categories for the fruit, 1 for Apple logos, 2 for Iphones/Ipods , 2 with Apple screenshots and others seemed to be somewhat of a mixed bag. Pretty Good for an experiment. You are likely see to images that shouldn’t be there, but the automated algorithm it uses is far from pe...

The Savings Experiment
2009-08-18 07:36:00
Today I would like inform you about a new website called "The Savings Experiment". It is a part of AOL News and their main sponsor is Bank of America. The Savings Experiment website features a weekly video that examines a common money-saving idea and determines whether the benefits are really there. The Savings Experiment came about as a way to show consumers what things really cost, and where the real value is. The first two videos debunked whether or not you can save money by making your own ?fast food? tacos yourself (result: yes, sort of, but you?d end up making a whole batch of tacos vs. just making one), and whether homemade soda really makes good financial sense (result: it?s more trouble to make your own, but certainly cost-effective and more environmentally friendly). The Savings Experiment is running 10 experiments to see what things really cost, and where the real value is.Watch a new video each week, and get some extra cost-saving advice on the side. This week the video is ...

The Flawed Experiment: A Reflection on the Fourth of July
2009-07-03 11:27:00
I’ve posted this same brief post for the past few years around this time, in hopes of drumming up a bit of discussion regarding this national holiday. About five years ago I was reading the paper in a small town in Minnesota. I read an article by Congressman Mark Kennedy entitled: “The Great Experiment†which discussed the sacrifices many soldiers had made to make this country what it is today.  I did not disagree with his article, I simply felt that he’d left some other important people and groups out. I felt the need to reply in this letter to the editor that you see below. I’ve left it unedited, but I’ll include further thoughts at the end. Surprisingly, the local paper published my letter the following week: The Failing Experiment I want to first of all thank Congressman Mark Kennedy for his article concerning this country’s “Independence Day.†There is certainly room for celebration and many of the historical facts he pointed out are worth noting and ...

Early Contractor Involvement - Another Experiment by the Corps of Engineers
2009-02-07 00:04:00
In recent years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has attempted to employ "innovative" contracting methods but, in doing so, has often limited the number of contractors who have had the opportunity to perform major construction projects.  One of the justifications for these “innovative” methods has been that there will be a reduction in the administrative workload resulting in a "savings" for the government.  As a result, it seemed as though fewer solicitations were being issued using the sealed bidding procedures in FAR Part 14, with a corresponding increase in the procurement of construction under FAR Part 15, Contracting by Negotiation.  Construction contractors began to find that competition was no longer based on price alone, but on subjective factors as well, such as past performance, technical ability, or client satisfaction.  Of course, even though these procurements were purportedly “negotiated,” the instances ...
