Google Launches Image Swirl Experiment – How Far Will It Swirl?
2009-11-18 07:19:00 Have you ever used Google Image Search to look for ‘Apple’ the fruit and instead find yourself sifting through scores of Ipods, MacBooks, Iphones and a certain Mr. Steve Jobs before finally finding that, literally, forbidden fruit? Well, then you’d better hope that Google’s latest Labs Experiment -> Image Swirl is a big success. What does it do? It takes potentially ambiguous image searches and tries to organize/separate the results into 16 distinct categories. It relies on metadata and other image similarities to achieve this. To some extent this is similar to wonder wheel which is available as a part of Web Search. The quest for the apple on this experiment ended like this. 2 categories for the fruit, 1 for Apple logos, 2 for Iphones/Ipods , 2 with Apple screenshots and others seemed to be somewhat of a mixed bag. Pretty Good for an experiment. You are likely see to images that shouldn’t be there, but the automated algorithm it uses is far from pe...

The Savings Experiment
2009-08-18 07:36:00 Today I would like inform you about a new website called "The Savings Experiment". It is a part of AOL News and their main sponsor is Bank of America. The Savings Experiment website features a weekly video that examines a common money-saving idea and determines whether the benefits are really there. The Savings Experiment came about as a way to show consumers what things really cost, and where the real value is. The first two videos debunked whether or not you can save money by making your own ?fast food? tacos yourself (result: yes, sort of, but you?d end up making a whole batch of tacos vs. just making one), and whether homemade soda really makes good financial sense (result: it?s more trouble to make your own, but certainly cost-effective and more environmentally friendly). The Savings Experiment is running 10 experiments to see what things really cost, and where the real value is.Watch a new video each week, and get some extra cost-saving advice on the side. This week the video is ...

The Flawed Experiment: A Reflection on the Fourth of July
2009-07-03 11:27:00 I’ve posted this same brief post for the past few years around this time, in hopes of drumming up a bit of discussion regarding this national holiday. About five years ago I was reading the paper in a small town in Minnesota. I read an article by Congressman Mark Kennedy entitled: “The Great Experiment” which discussed the sacrifices many soldiers had made to make this country what it is today. I did not disagree with his article, I simply felt that he’d left some other important people and groups out. I felt the need to reply in this letter to the editor that you see below. I’ve left it unedited, but I’ll include further thoughts at the end. Surprisingly, the local paper published my letter the following week: The Failing Experiment I want to first of all thank Congressman Mark Kennedy for his article concerning this country’s “Independence Day.” There is certainly room for celebration and many of the historical facts he pointed out are worth noting and ...

The Brooklyn Beer Experiment
2009-06-10 13:42:00 The First Annual Brooklyn Beer Experiment, which was organized by cook-off masters Nick and Theo, was held this past Sunday at the gorgeous Bell House in, of course, Brooklyn. Since I know absolutely nothing about brewing beer (I’m only good at drinking it), I decided to conjure up a sweet treat

Democratic Congressmen and Senators would rush to the wells of their respective houses to decry his remarks. Well, that’s how ...

Early Contractor Involvement - Another Experiment by the Corps of Engineers
2009-02-07 00:04:00 In recent years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has attempted to employ "innovative" contracting methods but, in doing so, has often limited the number of contractors who have had the opportunity to perform major construction projects. One of the justifications for these “innovative” methods has been that there will be a reduction in the administrative workload resulting in a "savings" for the government. As a result, it seemed as though fewer solicitations were being issued using the sealed bidding procedures in FAR Part 14, with a corresponding increase in the procurement of construction under FAR Part 15, Contracting by Negotiation. Construction contractors began to find that competition was no longer based on price alone, but on subjective factors as well, such as past performance, technical ability, or client satisfaction. Of course, even though these procurements were purportedly “negotiated,” the instances ...

If this is still outside, only specific permalinks were removed and not the root itself. I hope the contrary of the latter is right so that it will be less task for me and more time to make auto-bucks. This experiment will ensure the rapid indexing time and placement of a specific permalink. After this post I'll try to optimize another keyword again, let's see what happens next. I hope this experiment is a success and the outcome would be positive.

Another Dairy Experiment: Faisselle And Lemon Balm Cherries
2008-08-02 07:18:00 The last dairy experiment earlier in the month left me with the desire to make one of my father's favorites: faisselle (pronounced fay-cell). It is believed to be one of the oldest form of fresh cheese made either from fresh cow's or goat's milk. Its name comes from the vessel used to drain the milk once the rennet is added and the milk has had the chance to incubate for a few hours. The result is a creamy, rich and a little wiggly-jelly like cheese that most people eat for dessert with a little sugar or honey. We also like to sprinkle a little salt and fresh herbs on it and serve it instead of a cheese tray. For me, "faisselle" is synonymous with vacations, my father, the Alps, best memories a child could have. Yes, I guess I am being a little nostalgic today, I blame it on youtube and too many videos of Provence where I grew up, or the Tour De France passing right by our vacation spot in the Alps!!I brought my breakfast of faisselle, fresh peach, toast and lavender honey to the...

The "Does Wegmans Rule" Experiment Results?
2008-07-11 08:45:00 Now that the "Does Wegmans Rule" experiment is complete, we (lacochran & I) thought it would be nice to share the results. For those of you new to this challenge, we asked for volunteers (here and here) to take a checklist to their local grocery store and price the following items:- 1 dozen large eggs- 1/2 gallon Bryers vanilla- 1 pound of bananas- 1 head of romaine lettuce- 1 box of San Georgio Spaghetti- 1 1000 sheet roll of Scott toilet tissue- 1 cup of Dannon Light ?N Fit yogurt- 1 12oz. can of Spam luncheon meat We figured that this would give a wide variety of products that are commonly used. Well, except for Spam because Spam is funny and makes us think of Monty Python. Our gracious volunteers visited these stores:- Wegmans in Fairfax, VA- Harris Teeter ? Herndon, VA- Shopper?s ? Alexandria, VA- Greenbelt Co-op ? Greenbelt, MD- Giant ? Alexandria, VA- Giant ? Reston, VA- Safeway ? Fairfax, VA- Kroger ? Atlanta, GA- Publix ? Atlanta, GAOn to the results. We prepared an ela...

The "Does Wegmans Rule?" Experiment
2008-06-17 09:22:00 I enjoy going to grocery stores. I think this may be some type of family disorder or just in our genes or both. Whenever we went on a family vacation, my dad would take us to the local grocery store to take a look around to compare the stores to those in Pittsburgh. He would also search for Hamburger Helper?s Rice Oriental. During our April vacation in Seattle, we went to Uwajimaya, one of the largest Asian grocery retailers in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, one of the highlights of our Alaskan cruise four years ago was stopping into a small grocery store in Skagway. (They also sold Hamburger Helper?s Rice Oriental.) Based on my lifetime experience of visiting grocery stores, I feel like I am qualified (at least in my mind) to state that Wegmans is the greatest grocery store of all time.Last week, Lacochran?s Bloggery, which has become one of my favorite daily reads, wrote a post about a rather interesting experience she had at her local Shopper?s supermarket.
