Exploitation of Teachers
2009-02-26 09:11:00
Dr Shahid SiddiquiWithout narrative, life has no meaning. Without meaning, learning has no purpose. Without a purpose, schools are houses of detention, not attention. - Neil Postman in End of EducationIN the neoliberal tradition of education, maximisation of profit and exploitation of labour go hand in hand. This model of education, which became popular in Pakistan in the last two decades, is based on a factory model where the emphasis is on mass production in order to make the venture viable in financial terms. In order to keep them on their toes, teachers are constantly demonised and exploited in different ways, be they economic, physical, emotional, social or psychological. In private English-medium schools, teachers are little more than robots, which is akin to being in a factory assembly line. In most of these schools, the punch-card system is in place and teachers are interrogated, insulted and penalized for being late. A common practice is that if a teacher is late for two days...
Exploitation & abuse of Indonesian women domestic workers
2008-12-10 02:01:00
We all know that poverty are the basic problem that leads to bigger problems, a social problem. Poor people are trying hard to survive by doing anything they can think of. As Indonesia has been one of "third countries" that facing these problems, many Indonesian women had also face to reality to work as domestic workers for more family income. But not all of them are lucky enough to get descent job. Indonesian women domestic workers, either who work as a migrant or local employment are often become the victim of human rights abuses. Although, Indonesian government have set legal remedies to protect them, but the violence has been happening still and the effect is remotely limited. In many cases, several of them are reported dead by serious violence, received beatings, tortured everyday in several years and because they choose to die or try to run by jumping from the top of building. They are forced to work beyond the limit only for $100 salary per month, and sometimes without pay fo...
The Exploitation Of Rudolph, It?s Animagical!
2008-12-01 16:46:00
It?s that time of year when those famous Rankin-Bass cartoons and stop-motion puppet (Animagic) specials like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Frosty can be seen on TV as frequently as wreaths on long-haul truckers? rigs. I think the only person that comes close to having produced more Christmas fare than Rankin-Bass was Johnny Mathis, who I?m pretty sure just released his 100th Christmas CD, or something close to it. The ABC Family Channel usually airs most of the Rankin-Bass productions all December long and my girls watched a few of them last night. Among them was ?Rudolph?s Shiny New Year? and ?The Christmas without a Santa Claus.? It got me thinking that at a certain point, the Animagic Christmas treatment may have been stretched a little too thin.Obviously, ?Rudolph? is as much a part of the holidays as Bing Crosby and fish-stockinged leg lamps giving us the glow of illuminated electrix sex in our windows. It has to be good television for it to have been broadcast over netwo...

2008-06-02 06:00:00
May 30th, 2008 by Estate Of Denial.ComThe Involuntary Redistribution of Assets (IRA) cases highlighted here at Estate of Denial portray some seriously ugly actions. Anyone thinking otherwise should spend time reading our News Archive.Today?s archive addition is a story out of California (http://www.estateofdenial.com/-?p=376) regarding a lawyer who is charged with embezzling more than $110,000 from an estate managed by the lawyer for a man under treatment for a psychotic disorder.IRA cases are about opportunity and practitioners recognize impaired individuals as potentially lucrative revenue generators. It?s that cold, it?s that calculated. Yesterday?s posting about Ryan Cuthbert and his family illustrated the point. We see this California case as a noteworthy follow-up.--------------------------A friend of mine recently told me, predators ( Time, Disease, Abusers)weaken and set the victim up, then the opportunists, vultures move in for the kill! It's so sad our justice system has com...

A Detective?s Case Files Of Exploitation
2008-05-29 02:41:00
by Joe RoubicekWhile the number of violent crimes in the U.S. is decreasing, financial crimes against the elderly are increasing as a result of the aging of the population and greater concentration of wealth among older people. According to a 2005 Senior Forum Report by the White House Conference On Aging, only one in 100 cases of financial abuse is reported, and there are millions of financial abuse victims each year. The money is certainly there for the taking: persons over 50 control at least 70% of the nation?s household net worth. 75% of victims of financial abuse are between the ages of 70 and 89. The majority are female, frail and mentally impaired. With each new case I realized that the key is not deception of the elderly, but exploitation of common disabilities this population suffers. Exploiters were being recognized as crafty scammers when they were simply exploiting the victim?s disabilities.I had no idea at the time that my law enforcement career was about to focus on a b...

When Dennis Reeves Cooper said "Occasionally, we are able to break a blockbuster story before the Citizen gets it and they often follow with their own version of the story a day or so later." on May 9, 2008 after running the story "Elder Abuse Hits Home: The Clara Fernandez Story." he didn't know just how prophetic those words would become when days later the Key West Citizen jumps on the bandwagon to headline Elder Abuse Caretaker Allegedly Bilks 86-Year-OldKey West,Florida USA by Mandy Bolen A Big Pine Key woman remained in jail Monday afternoon, facing charges of elderly exploitation. Key West ,The Africans Buried at Higgs Beach and Zephanias Kingsly

Key West , Florida. USA .- by Ray Fernandez A lot of you have been by the cemetery on Higgs Beach and have heard about the Africans buried there. Some said they died and were buried there in the name of historical truth these people were murdered, when you shackle someone hands and feet without food or medicine for months, they just don't happen to die, they are murdered for financial gain . Now that we got that out of the way we'll get on with the rest of the story. The life story of Zephaniah Kingsley (1765-1843), alleged smuggler, trainer and trader of slaves, more certainly Florida planter and man of affairs. One popular anecdote about Kingsley, often repeated and published at least twice, tells of the capture by a Coast Guard gunboat* of 350 Africans whom, so the story goes, Kingsley was attempting to land illegally the government after confiscating the human cargo could find no one capable of taking care of the Africans except Kingsley himself.Consequently, they were put in hi...

Protecting The Elderly With David Kessler
2008-05-06 06:19:00
Financial exploitation of the elderly is a CRIME. Too often, incidents of stealing from an elderly victim are misinterpreted as a "family matter," or the elderly individual is blamed for giving the suspect their money or property. A common misperception is that the perpetrator did not "take" the money or property from the victim, but that the victim "gave" their valuables to the perpetrator ? therefore, how can it be a crime?David Kessler can answer this question based upon the hundreds of cases he has investigated involving financial exploitation of the elderly. David's investigations have resulted in the conviction and imprisonment of PREDATORS.David M. Kessler is a retired Police Officer (former Commander of the Financial Crimes Unit) with the Dekalb County Police Department in Decatur, Georgia. He has dedicated his professional life to providing education and guidance for public and private sector professionals on the topic of exploitation of the elderly, and making certain tho...

Click on Video to View It!By T.J. GREANEY of the Tribune?s staff Sometimes adult children are abusing drugs or alcohol, sometimes they?re resentful of their childhoods and feel their owed, and sometimes they?re simply opportunistic, but financial exploitation by children of their elderly parents is a problem only now beginning to be widely reported. "A lot of people think it?s within the family so it?s a civil matter, and some people even think, ?Well, I?m going to inherit the money anyway, so I?m just collecting my inheritance early,? " said Marta Fontaine, adult protective services planner for the health and senior services department. "We?ve seen it get to the extent where someone gets the deed to a home or opens joint bank accounts. People have signed over CDs. It can be quite extreme." Fontaine said this area of the law is relatively new. Missouri first passed a financial exploitation of the elderly and disabled statute in 2000. It has been revised twice to make it easier to p...

Intimidating Family Members: When a family member petitions or questions the need for a guardian , the unethical lawyers will make "conclusory" statements maligning the family member(s), claiming they are not fit to be appointed as guardian. "Conclusory statements" are those which are merely unproven allegations not supported by real evidence. Our investigation of court records disclosed that the "family blame game" is a popular modus operandi. When family members don't know their rights or how to legally oppose false allegations, the guardianship perps are left free to acquire the ward's assets for themselves. What Happens When the Money's Gone? The greedy, unethical guardian, after bleeding out the estate (whether through unnecessary and excessive legal fees or by outright theft), petitions the court to withdraw. How many bad guardians do you think have any sense of duty or obligation to stay on the assignment pro bono, without getting paid, when there is no money left? THE WARD,...

2008-04-20 21:24:00
Recently, the Turkish Daily News had a very generous front page article, ("Young Turks' career question: Why?") concerning Unilever's IdeaTrophy Contest. A business strategy contest for university students throughout Turkey, IdeaTrophy provides a competitive platform for students to form teams, culminate ideas, and present to Unilever executives. Winners of the yearly contest are rewarded with small cash prizes (and potential for employment). While I agree that the contest provides a good framework for teamwork, business planning education, presentation skills and valuable experience working with a multinational corporation, I will stop short at saying it promotes and improves innovation and entrepreneurship for Turkey. This is the problem I have with these "idea" contests. For these large MNC's, they are quite simply building a marketing focus group for free, and a permission-based recruiting network. By asking for ideas (bordering on exploitation of rather entrepreneurial...

VENTURA, Calif.?Toni Radys won't be spending Mother's Day with Mom next month. The 55-year-old Moorpark woman has been sentenced to 123 days in Ventura County jail for preying on her elderly mother.Prosecutors say Radys pleaded guilty to insurance fraud, grand theft, mental abuse and financial elder abuse with a special allegation of a loss over $150,000.Radys used false pretenses to add her name to the legal title of her mother's home, and she used a power of attorney to obtain a mortgage on a second property, then removed her mother's name from the title. The daughter also stole from her mother's bank accounts and got a credit card and a life insurance policy in her mother's name. The insurance policy named Radys sole beneficiary and her daughter rang up debt on the credit card.Prosecutors said Tuesday that Radys also verbally abused her mother and threatened to throw her out of her own home.

Judicial Watch Blog For more than a decade the government gave millions of taxpayer dollars to a man that claimed to help the mentally disabled but instead used the money to finance his lavish lifestyle, pay a close friend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a no-show job and make illegal campaign contributions to a local politician.Although Seibert Phillips lied about his credentials (he falsely claimed he was a certified social worker with a master?s degree) and blew hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury cars, expensive television sets and pricey alcohol, the government kept the money flowing without bothering to check how it was spent by the so-called social services agency he founded more than 12 years ago out of his tiny Brooklyn apartment. Thanks to a local newspaper?s investigative series, Phillips and the agency he calls Center for Serving People in Need, has been exposed for massive fraud and corruption that has robbed more than 100,000 disabled people of much-needed s...

Elder abuse is widespread, yet few resources are directed toward combatting it. One Senate committee, for example, found that less than 2 percent of federal money targeted for abuse prevention is spent to help elders. But the Baby Boom generation, now heading into its senior years, is focusing attention on the issue, as Jennifer Fernandez's story in the News & Record on Sunday pointed out. That story also showed that the problem isn't just substandard care in nursing homes. It's also financial abuse. Studies show that the elderly are the ones most often falling victim to these scams. Aware that many older people have substantial savings, and aware that aging may have left the elderly isolated or diminished their faculties, scammers see them as prime targets.Clearly, the nation must target the abuse and exploitation of elders or else the elderly will keep getting targeted. The elderly must not be preyed upon by anyone ? from family members to Internet scammers.

Senator Schumer Wants to Protect Elders
2008-03-03 12:50:00
By Jessica Wasmund jwasmund@post-journal.comSen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, is working on legislation against what he considers one of the greatest problems plaguing senior citizens.??For too long (this problem) has stayed hidden in the shadows and out of the public eye, and it?s called elder abuse,?? Schumer said. ??It comes in many different forms: from senior citizens suffering from neglect at the hand of a caregiver or financial exploitation where seniors are conned out of their life savings or property. These despicable acts jeopardize senior citizens, and what?s most disturbing is right now we?re seeing way too many cases across Upstate New York.??Schumer said there is a lack of attention being paid to the issue, as well as a lack of federal safeguards in place to protect America?s senior citizens.??Elder abuse has been swept under the rug for too long,?? Schumer said. ??Now with the baby boom generation growing older, we?re going to see an unfortunate spike in the number of...
Letters from Readers : The Problem with Judiciary Accountability

I want to say your blog is awesome.Thank you for bringing all of this great information to the public's blind eye.I found your blog several months ago due to researching elder abuse and the corruption and that follows it.For over a year now, I have been personally investigating a guardian here in Illinois that has been abusing, neglecting and stealing from hundreds of elderly persons. She is politically connected and has close ties with with court system.I, along with another person have reported this person several times to the so called elder protection agency and they have done nothing. We also called the states attorney's office and all they did was give us some tips and tell us to call the police. The police say this is a matter for the courts, meanwhile this woman continues to rape the elderly from their dignity and rob them of everything they own.I was very pleased to see the FOX News do that report. I certainly hope they will do a story on what is going on in my area of Illin...
To Be Forewarned is to be Forearmed!

By Lou AnnAn industry exists in which lawyers, accountants and other unethical participants, sometimes with complicity from probate courts, can separate any of us from our property when certain (not that unusual) circumstances occur. These circumstances can be orchestrated and lead to an Involuntary Redistribution of Assets (IRA). This often occurs with wills, trusts, guardianships or other probate-related situations. To think that property and assets are your own and that you have control over their ultimate distribution is a mistake. Situations such as are described at www.estateofdenial.com occur more often than most people would ever believe. A close study of this issue leads one to recognize that going to court is not a path that necessarily provides reasonable resolution. This course too easily leads to lawyers or administrators becoming the functional beneficiaries while the intended beneficiaries are left with reduced or no assets as well as potentially significant legal expe...

?The amount of incidents of financial abuse have been steadily increasing.? Carl Eklund, deputy director of Adult Protective Services for San Bernardino County.BROOKE EDWARDS Staff WriterBarbara Carroll, trusting her family, said she would give certain one?s blank checks. Today, her entire life savings of $30,000 has been depleted. Carroll is one of thousands throughout the state to be a victim of elder abuse ? and the numbers are growing. ?The amount of incidents of financial abuse have been steadily increasing,? said Carl Eklund, deputy director of Adult Protective Services for San Bernardino County?s desert region. Sadly, Eklund said Carroll?s story isn?t unusual. She said most of the time this type of elder abuse is perpetrated by a a relative or someone known to the elder. These situations become particularly tragic for seniors, who are often reliant on savings and a fixed income to get by. ?I get pension and social security,? Carroll said. ?That makes my rent and that?s about i...
Financial Elder Abuse
2008-02-25 15:25:00
Elsie DaweFinancial abuse is often accompanied by other forms of abuse, such as emotional abuse, physical abuse, or denial of rights. Three components are necessary for financial abuse to happen:? Need or greed. The abuser is under financial pressure.? Opportunity. The abuser has access to funds or property.? False sense of entitlement??I deserve it. I am owed.?If you fall victim to this type of abuse, your comfortable future can vanish in the twinkling of an eye.Be very careful to whom you give power of attorney and what conditions you attach thereto, because given to the wrong person(s) with no checks in place, it is a recipe for disaster. Some seniors will sell virtually everything they have and give the proceeds along with most of their savings to their children so that they can finally get their share from the government in the form of the supplement and also watch their children (and grandchildren) enjoy the money, believing that their children will take good care of them.Yes, ...
The OLder Generation is Ripe For Picking
2008-02-22 13:30:00
By ANN GOWANS The older population is extremely vulnerable to exploitation. The perception is out there that the older generations were and are savers, have built up large nest eggs that are ripe for the picking.Thieves and fraud artists from many sectors of society are singling out older adults for scamming and various kinds of theft. People, who are often well known to the victims, take more than a million dollars from older homeowners every year in this country. The number of con artists is growing because they are working in an enlarging market place. Senior exploitation is on the rise in part because the numbers of older adults is soaring, and these crimes are often difficult to prosecute because most cases go unreported. As the number of older adults grows, so does the rate of crime against them. According to Elder Abuse statistics, as many as 5 million annual cases of financial exploitation occur nationwide. Some of those who follow these crimes estimate that almost certainly ...

Seniors Often the Victims of Financial Predators Due to Mortgage CrisisWASHINGTON ? On Wednesday, February 13, U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Herb Kohl (D-WI) will hold a hearing on the rise of financial scams across the country, the result of a sharp increase in foreclosures. Across the nation, foreclosures have increased by 95 percent in the past year. Foreclosure rescue scams target low-income and senior homeowners already facing a financial difficulty. Often these financial predators will claim that they can help ?save? the home of a senior experiencing foreclosure, when in fact they plan to walk away with both the title and equity of the home.
