Bow Making Exploits (Part 2)
2008-12-22 06:01:00 Sinew is weird stuff. I bought it from Highland Horn as dried sinew. It looks like hard, translucent, leathery dog chews! Sinew is prepared by pounding it with a hammer and tearing apart the individual fibres (very laborious). There are some good links to this on DAG's thread 're-curve bows'.
Bow Making Exploits (Part 1)
2008-12-15 21:00:00 I gathered the ash log (image 1, below) many years ago when doing some coppicing. It was split into two billets. I made one half into a light bow in the style of a Native American bow (flattish elliptical section to the limbs). This shot smoothly and could be drawn back a long way, but was rather

Obama Campaign's Deceit Exploits Israelis in order to Obtain Jewish Votes
2008-10-12 14:30:00 Politicians in general like to pretend, invent, and falsify. But Obama's fakery is superlative, which I don't mean as a compliment. I've already pointed out the extreme fakery of his claims to be untainted by Washington corruption and to represent the poor and disenfranchised. Before getting to the latest deceitful outrage by the Obama campaign, it needs to be said that he is sinister. Precisely the pretense of fighting for the poor and helpless and downtrodden, etc., has been the stock in trade of demagogues, including fascists, Communists of various breeds, Christian socialists [like the notorious Father Coughlin of the 1930s], etc. William Randolph Hearst, the multi-millionaire American newspaper publisher, put on the guise of a "crusader" for the poor and the working class at various stages of his career.Hayim Ramon, one of the most loathesome ministers in olmert's cabinet [in a league with olmert himself] demonstrated the fake populist strategy here in Israel when he pointe...

McAfee warns about possible exploits
2008-05-28 20:03:00 Hack and spammers seem to work popular in an attempt to search for vulnerabilities in various applications. It appears that the recently discovered used to try to take advantage of one unpatched Adobe Flash vulnerability. According to one post yesterday of McAfee AVERT Labs, the security company has received a number of samples used by many different sources of spam domains.McAfee were samples of these allegations very seriously and began investigations on the matter. It seems that while you browse the sites that serve these SWF spirit McAfee found a link leading to mass recently reported hacks. As in early May reported attacks infected sites, reference external script, which for this new Adobe Flash-related vulnerability appears to be one SWF file. Apparently this SWF file leads to a similar name WIN% 209,0124,0 i.swf (WIN 9,0124,0 i.swf). The file is now offline.McAfee is unable to confirm that this last SWF file is an attempt to take advantage of the aforementioned Adobe Flash vu...

Security Updates and Exploits
2008-04-25 12:01:00 As you may know, we announced version four of the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report earlier this week. Amongst the many interesting findings is data which relates to software vulnerability exploits. I wanted to highlight these as Shoaib, one of my blog readers, contacted me recently to get my views on a post he wrote. Here are the key findings: During 2007, 32.2 percent of known security vulnerabilities (CVE IDs) in the Microsoft products analyzed for this report had publicly available exploit code. This is nearly identical to the totals from 2006 when 32.7 percent of known security vulnerabilities for the same products had publicly available exploit code. Microsoft matched each public exploit with its corresponding vulnerability using CVE identifiers and Microsoft security bulletins. The number of Microsoft security bulletins released in 2007 was 11.5 percent lower than in 2006, and the number of vulnerabilities covered by those bulletins was 29.6 percent lower than the nu...

Jennifer Garner Exploits Her Family for Her Craft
2007-12-01 01:29:00 Jennifer Garner looks every bit the sweet mom in these pictures with her and Violet out for a winter stroll in the park, but her portrayal of a high-strung character in "Juno," might have her on her family's shit list. Jennifer admitted at a screening of the film at the Producers Guild of American that she borrowed a number of traits for her character from ""someone related to me. She doesn't even know it yet! And it will kill her when she sees the movie." That's so wrong, cause you totally know it's Violet. MySpace hacked, exploits target Alicia Keys' page and others
2007-11-10 06:36:00 MySpace hacked, exploits target Alicia Keys' page and othersBy Thomas Claburn 9 November 2007 12:47PMAvoid Alicia Keys' Web page on MySpace. It's been hacked..Roger Thompson, CTO at Exploit Prevention Labs, has found multiple hacked MySpace pages, including the page for Alicia Keys, the social networking site's fourth most popular music artist. In keeping with what appears to be a new trend among security researchers, Thompson has released a video depicting the hack on YouTube. He has also posted details on his blog. Visiting the page exposes the visitor to an exploit that installs malware unless the user is fully patched against the most recent security vulnerabilities. "They're using an exploit to install software in the background," Thompson explains in the video. Even those with patched systems are vulnerable. The hackers have found a way to associate their malicious URL with what would normally be a non-clickable background area on the Web page. The result is that clicks o...

Fred Thompson Exploits Social Networking and Web 2.0

Hackers crash e-passport readers -- stage set for exploits
2007-08-01 23:35:00 Hackers crash e-passport readers -- stage set for exploitsPosted Aug 1st 2007 4:27AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Misc. Gadgets, WirelessLukas Grunwald -- last seen cloning Germany's RFID passports -- is back with more "white hat" hackery on the world's new e-passport systems. This time, however, he's crashing RFID readers to demonstrate how a hacked passport could conceivably force approval of expired or forged passports. After all, "If you're able to crash something you are most likely able to exploit it," says Grunwald. Lukas was able to crash two passport readers made by different vendors by first cloning a passport's chip and then modding the JPEG2000 image file stored within the chip to create a buffer overflow condition -- the same vulnerabilities which make so many devices (the original Xbox, anyone?) so easily exploitable. Lukas contends that all airport readers are likely vulnerable to such an exploit as they would be using off-the-shelf libraries for decoding JPEG im...

The Art of Intrusion: The Real Stories Behind the Exploits of Hackers, Intr
2007-04-28 12:45:00 From Publishers WeeklyIt would be difficult to find an author with more credibility than Mitnick to write about the art of hacking. In 1995, he was arrested for illegal computer snooping, convicted and held without bail for two years before being released in 2002. He clearly inspires unusual fear in the authorities and unusual dedication in the legions of computer security dabblers, legal and otherwise. Renowned for his use of "social engineering," the art of tricking people into revealing secure information such as passwords, Mitnick (The Art of Deception) introduces readers to a fascinating array of pseudonymous hackers. One group of friends bilks Las Vegas casinos out of more than a million dollars by mastering the patterns inherent in slot machines; another fellow, less fortunate, gets mixed up with a presumed al-Qaeda?style terrorist; and a prison convict leverages his computer skills to communicate with the outside world, unbeknownst to his keepers. Mitnick's handling of thes...

Symantec: Vista vulnerable to legacy exploits
2007-03-12 08:54:00 If I had to take a bet on who really knows what the security situation in Windows Vista is like, I would put my money on the security vendors. After all, knowing security is their business. To that end, the folks over at Symantec have released a series of papers that detail their findings after months of Vista security testing. As you might expect, the results aren't pretty: Symantec claims that Vista suffers from many of the same security vulnerabilities that plagued earlier versions of Windows. "There are existing codes that can survive Vista without being modified--[certain] keyloggers, worms, Trojans, and spyware are able to survive," Symantec researcher Ollie Whitehouse said. While many of these weaknesses have yet to be taken advantage of in exploits, Symantec thinks that it's only a matter of time until the hackers catch on. While Microsoft claims that Vista is the most secure Windows yet, this news does not bode well for enterprises looking to deploy the operating system. ...
Hollywood exploits Iwo Jima
2007-02-27 17:56:02 Does anybody else think it's funny that Hollywood makes a movie (great movie, by the way) that criticizes how the flag-raisers at Iwo Jima were exploited to sell war bonds, something important, and then exploits one of the raisers' sons for an awards show. It's right to honor them. Just don't criticize people who want to remember a glorious moment in American history as if you're so much more sophisticated; especially if you're going to do the same thing.

Security experts rate the world's most dangerous exploits

By Dan Goodin in San Francisco • Get more from this author Posted in Security, 24th April 2009 23:24 GMT Free whitepaper – Vulnerability management buyer's checklist Criminal hackers continue to penetrate many more company networks than most administrators care to admit, according to two security experts who offered a list of the most effective exploits used to gain entry. Topping the list is an attack dubbed super-flexible pivoting. It abuses Linux machines connected to a network's DMZ, or demilitarized zone, to bypass corporate firewalls and access sensitive resources on an internal network. The technique has already been used to steal vast amounts of data, including "millions of credit cards," said Ed Skoudis, a senior security consultant for InGuardians, a security company that frequently responds to major network breaches.
