Environmentally-Friendly Explosives
2008-06-04 20:58:00 From C|Net's News.com comes a report that German scientists are developing more-environmentally-friendly bombs. Yep, you read that right... green bombs. The idea is that by creating explosives that are nitrogen-based (instead of traditional carbon-based explosives), the scientists can create explosives that are more stable (i.e., less prone to explode from mis-handling) as well as not giving off toxic gases. Now people who are being blown up can be safe in the knowledge that their surroundings are not going to be polluted by toxic gases after their dead. And, it turns out, the new explosives may actually be more powerful than the same volume of conventional explosives.

Parents Call Police About Explosives Shipped to House
2008-04-30 22:43:00 A South Carolina teenager arrested for plotting to bomb his school had designs for an arsenal of explosives including a nail bomb that would have "devastated" students in a crowded hallway, a local police chief said today. Ryan Schallenberger, 18, called his plot "Columbine III" and laid out details in a "bomb summary" that described the different types of explosives he would use in the suicide attack. He even recorded his expenses. "I think he was more concerned about a high body count than killing anyone in particular," Chesterfield Police Chief Randall Lear told ABC News. Schallenberger's "summary" contained details for a nail bomb. "Inside a school, with confined concrete walls, just a little bit of nails, nuts and bolts, ball bearings and some of these explosives devices, it would devastate the student body," Lear said. Authorities arrested Schallenberger on Saturday after a package arrived at his family's rural...

Explosives Found in Luggage at Orlando Airport
2008-04-02 05:31:00 This just came across my Fox News feed via Twitter: A man was detained Tuesday at Orlando International Airport carrying materials in his luggage that could have been used for an explosive device, the FBI said on Tuesday. Jamaican national Kevin Brown, 32, planned to board Air Jamaica flight 80 to Jamaica, until he was questioned by airport authorities, the FBI said in a statement. A subsequent search of Browns checked baggage by airport authorities revealed two galvanized pipes, end caps, two small containers containing BBs, batteries, two containers with an unknown liquid, laptop, and bomb making literature, according to the FBI. According to MyFOXOrlando.com, several ticket counters in the area were closed and a portion of the terminal roped off while members of the bomb squad searched the Brown’s bags. He was taken into custody and turned over to the FBI. That is some hard-core equipment. There really isn’t any doubt what this guy had planned. What is in question i...
