Extinct Tasmanian tiger could come back to life after DNA is implanted into
2008-06-07 01:22:00 Extinct: The last known Tasmanian tiger died in Hobart Zoo in 1936 Australian scientists have managed to extract a gene from a preserved specimen of a Tasmanian tiger and make it active. The breakthrough has left them dreaming that one day they will be able to recreate the animal, which died out more than 70 years ago.And if it can be done with the Tasmanian tiger, it may also be possible to resurrect creatures that have been extinct for far longer ? the premise of the 1993 Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic Park in which dinosaurs were brought back to life. "There used to be a time when extinction meant for ever, but no more," said Professor Mike Archer, Dean of Science at Sydney?s University of New South Wales. "We are now able to seriously challenge whether those animals that have gone have gone for ever."What has been achieved is a very important step in bringing back those animals that are extinct and while I think that technically it is still pretty difficult at the moment, we ca...

Red deer in Kashmir almost extinct
2008-05-12 16:13:00 Due to "rampant poaching, neglect by authorities and a 17-year-old separatist rebellion in the region." Only 160 of the animals are left: Poachers continue to kill the deer for its antlers, which fetch a good price on the international black market. Wolverines Extinct in Sequoia - Kings Canyon?
2008-05-10 12:37:00 Updated May 11:A new study using baited trap stations, done during winter, failed to find any California wolverines in either Sequoia or Kings Canyon National Parks in the southern Sierra Nevada. However, in 1980, definite wolverine tracks were seen at two locales in Kings Canyon National Park by trained wildlife biologists. However, tracks always count as "unverified". But not to me.I say that at least 28 years ago, wolverines were present in Kings Canyon National Park. Wolverine sightings in California do tend to be concentrated in Kings Canyon and Sequoia Parks. This area was long held to be the last stronghold of the wolverine in California. Many detailed sightings were made from 1900-1930 in Sequoia National Park. In one, a wolverine chased two adult bears away from a horse carcass.A map of historical wolverine sightings in Kings Canyon - Sequoia Parks. As you can see, sightings were much more common from 1920-1955 or so and have dropped off quite a bit ever since. Click to vi...

If There Ever Was ~ an exhibition of extinct and impossible smells
2008-04-22 18:57:00 The Reg Vardy Gallery at the University of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, England, will host If There Ever Was: an exhibition of extinct and impossible smells: In his book of essays entitled, Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler?s Ninth Symphony, the physician Lewis Thomas wrote, ?The act of smelling something, anything, is remarkably like the act of thinking itself.? And it is with this appreciation of smell as comparable to thought and interpretation that the exhibition If There Ever Was considers scent as integral to the perception of abstraction and representation. Scent is the essence of physical presence and lends proof to our surroundings. Contrastingly, the fourteen scents re-created for If There Ever Was are inspired by absence. Like a cabinet of intangible curiosities, their forms are drawn from disparate stories throughout history for which few, if any, objects remain. And although it would be easy to pass the exhibition off as a work of pure fantasy?the product of...

Are Apples Becoming Extinct?
2008-04-03 17:00:00 Did you know there are less than 1000 varieties of apples here in the US? That doesn't seem like a problem, does it? How about if I tell you, in the 1800s, here in America, there were over 7,000 different varieties of apples, which leaves us with about an 85% extinction rate! I was listening to a 60 Minutes podcast two weeks ago. Yes, this is the audio version of the show. Feel free to download it and take a listen. Why should I care that there are less than 1000 varieties of apples left? What if I told you that the cure to cancer, the cure to some obscure disease that could wipe out the world's wheat supply, the cure to some unknown disease, could lie in the genes of just one of those apple varieties? Now you know why this is so important and what one man is doing about it.When I first started listening to this podcast, frankly, I thought...who cares? Animals and plants get extinct every day...and I'm not talking about the ones humans are pushing to extinction but the m...

"Drive-By" Media: Extinct as Drive-Ins
2008-03-18 15:06:00 Rush Limbaugh?s reference to the mainstream press as the ?drive-by? media may be an ideologically driven critique, but in the case of several major stories in 2007, including the Virginia Tech massacre, the media did reveal a tendency to flood the zone with instant coverage and then quickly drop the subject. The media in 2007 had a markedly short attention span. Despite the fascination in some quarters with Hollywood bad girls such as Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, the reality is that much of the mainstream media wasn?t very interested in tabloid-style gossip and scandal. To the extent that there is interest in the mainstream press, the largest share comes from cable television news. But the goal of winning new audiences to old platforms ? using the Web to lure people to television programs or print ? generally is not working. Younger audiences, it turns out, are interested in news. But they want it from new platforms that can deliver it in new ways and on the consu...

We'll be extinct in no time, Da ...
2008-02-24 08:02:00 I read an interesting article on business week today. It detailed the double standards adopted by top US firms as far as the environment goes. Apparently, 3 major US firms (GE, Caterpillar and Alcoa) sit both on the USCAP(US Climate Action Partnership), a body actively seeking to reduce CO2 emissions and save the environment, and on the board of CEED (Centre for Energy and Economic Development), which opposes major climate-oriented policies, such as the 65% reduction in emissions by 2050.Manic Hypocrisy. One wouldnt expect the top of the fortune 500 to 'engage in activities leading to a greener future'. Logical Deduction - we'll be extinct in no time. Face it - even the companies who want to give up their polluting ways cant, cos the competition will beat the crap out of them if they do. Most eco-friendly practices cost money. Unless they become the industry standard, no one will conform to such ideals. Soon, mankind will develop weapons and machinery capable to sucking the plane...

China crackdown to make gold farmers extinct?
2008-01-17 22:37:00 China is cracking down on "undesirable" online gaming activity. The rapid increase in online gaming in China is making the government uneasy. Negative press about obsessive gamers dying in Internet cafes or addicted players neglecting work or other duties is giving the country a poor reputation. With the government focused on games such as World of Warcraft will the Chinese gold farmer become extinct? Most importantly who's gonna supply me with my crafting materials when I'm too lazy to farm it myself? There have been documentaries about Chinese gold farmers from the casual group of friends who enjoy an evening of fun to the sweat shops which are fueled by money from the west. But why is the Chinese gold farmer much more prevalent than say ... a Russian gold farmer or even an Indian gold farmer? How much of a role does the communist society play when addictions such as these affect the mass population? I think it plays a huge role. When a society has so many restrictions placed on ...

2007-11-05 00:00:00 This argument has been raging for awhile. Extinct Debt Terms & Agency Muscle in Multifamily
2007-11-01 20:12:00 Here's a quick update on the pulse of the debt market:Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure of spending time with colleagues at the Counselors of Real Estate at their annual convention here in San Francisco. During a Capital Markets forum, the panel was asked their views about the types of deals lenders are willing to do these days, in light of the currently constrained credit markets. That discussion humorously morphed into "what kinds of debt terms are extinct these days". So here are a couple of the debt market's newest extinct species:Full Term I/O: Lots of nods on this one -- wide agreement that lenders are back to old school underwriting, requiring at least 25 to 30 year amortization for most loan terms over three years. On a 5+ year loan, the borrower may be able to get up to two years I/O. Cashout Refi: In light of rates, spreads and cap rates having moved up, creating the risk of lowered valuations, lenders are particularly hard-pressed to finance profit-taking any...

"Extinct" Dolphin Caught on Camera
2007-08-31 22:12:00 A sighting of a rare Dolphin, thought to be extinct, has been caught on camera in ChinaA Chinese man has videotaped a large white animal swimming in the Yangtze river, which experts say is a dolphin species unique to China and feared extinct, the official Xinhua agency reported on Wednesday. The last confirmed sighting of the long-beaked, nearly blind baiji was in 2004. After an international team failed to find a single dolphin on a six-week expedition last year the species was classified as critically endangered and possibly extinct. But the video from central Anhui province may renew slender hopes for the survival of the creatures also known as white-flag dolphins and traditionally considered a deity by local people."I never saw such a big thing in the water before, so I filmed it," dolphin-spotter Zeng Yujiang told Xinhua. "It was about 1,000 meters (yards) away and jumped out of water several times."Wang Kexiong, of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences...

The current National Geographic magazine reports that less than two per cent of the world's population has natural red hair, created by a mutation in northern Europe thousands of years ago. Global intermingling, which broadens the availability of possible partners, has reduced the chances of redheads meeting and producing little redheads of their own. Will We Be Extinct in 12 Million Years?
2007-08-07 21:11:00 There are immediate dangers menacing the human civilization, like terrorism and climate change. We may struggle to fight these issues which are in the end caused by the human race. But what can we do against the Universe? In May 2007, a team led by Mikhail Medvedev at the University of Kansas emitted a novel theory aimed toexplain the periodicity of mass extinctions on Earth, which occur about once every 62 million years. "Themotion of the solar system exposes Earth to an onslaught of cosmic rays on a schedule that is synchronized to the mass extinctions.", signaled Adrian Melott, professor of physics and astronomy at KU.The Milky Way galaxy appears to have a good side and a bad side. The bad aspect of the Milky Way would be its dorsal side. The team says that the leading, dorsal side of the Milky Way emits a shock wave as the galaxy travels through the universe. When the solar system periodically reaches the proximities of the dorsal boundary of the galaxy, about once every 64 mill...
