Plant workers: Fairness at stake in prayer dispute
2008-09-19 17:55:00
Plant workers: Fairness at stake in prayer dispute GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) - Melissa Infante sat in her car smoking a cigarette, knowing she was supposed to be packaging meat at the JBS Swift & Co. plant where she’s worked for nearly two years. But she’d walked off the job Thursday morning to protest a schedule change she believes unfairly catered to Muslim workers at the plant, shrugging off warnings from supervisors that she could be fired. “To me, it’s just not fair,” Infante said. On Monday, hundreds of Muslim employees were the first to walk off the job, saying they weren’t being allowed to take a break to pray during the holy month of Ramadan. Break times were then altered on the second shift so the Muslim employees, mostly Somali, could make their fourth of five daily prayers at sunset. Then hundreds of non-Muslim workers walked off the job in counterprotests Wednesday and Thursday morning. Later Thursday, plant managers did an about-f...

Fairness Doctrine Issue In Indiana Congressional Race
2008-06-24 07:04:00
Photo by jurvetson A candidate for Indiana’s second district congressional seat has taken a stance against the “Fairness Doctrine,” saying that instead of fostering speech, imposing requirements for “fairness” will actually limit free speech because it will make radio stations afraid to air controversial viewpoints, commentaries and talk radio shows. Says Republican Luke Puckett on the “Fairness Doctrine“: I strongly support Rep. Mike Pence’s effort to keep the Fairness Doctrine from coming back. The Fairness Doctrine is simply a thinly veiled attempt to muzzle the free speech rights and freedom of association rights of broadcasters, show hosts and listeners. We must not let it be reinstated now or at any time in the future. While fairness is an admirable goal, when the “Fairness Doctrine” was in effect, there weren’t any radio talk shows — either on the left or the right — because radio executives were fe...
Serotonin may affect our sense of fairness
2008-06-07 00:57:00
UCLA release - The neurotransmitter serotonin, which acts as a chemical messenger between nerve cells, plays a critical role in regulating emotions such as aggression during social decision-making, new research by scientists at England’s University of Cambridge and UCLA suggests. Their findings appear June 6 in the peer-reviewed journal Science. Serotonin has long been associated with social behavior, and low levels of serotonin are associated with depression and anxiety, but its precise involvement in impulsive aggression has been controversial. Though many scientists have hypothesized a link between serotonin and impulsivity, this is one of the first studies to show a causal link between the two. The findings highlight why some of us may become combative or aggressive when we have not eaten. The essential amino acid necessary for the body to create serotonin can only be obtained through diet; our serotonin levels naturally decline when we don’t eat. The research also p...

Back Door Fairness Doctrine?

A new style of censorship is being considered by the Federal Communications Commission. The left understands the stigma attached to the "Fairness Doctrine," so rather than try to reestablish it, they are taking another route to achieve the same goal.

WASHINGTON, DC?A scathing indictment of toothless judicial ethics standards and the closed-door systems charged with disciplining judges, HALT?s 2008 Judicial Accountability Report Card issued grades to all 50 states, D.C. and the federal circuits on May 1, Law Day.?While most judges serve capably from the bench, our systems for judicial accountability unfortunately allow others to regularly abuse their positions of power,? stated HALT senior counsel Suzanne M. Blonder. ?Weak conduct codes permit state and federal judges to rule even when they have a critical conflict of interest in a case. Judicial discipline commissions regularly turn a blind eye to misconduct by making it difficult for citizens to file complaints against judges, concealing data and ultimately refusing to remove or meaningfully sanction even the most incompetent and abusive judges.?

2008-03-05 09:32:00
I think the policemen who blocked, stopped and intimidated us should not be the only people to blame about the incident on which our basic right to freely assemble and travel without any harassment were infringed. On one instance in the encounter in Molino Road where we were stopped for almost an hour, one young police officer named Ramos was a graduate of our institution Batch '94. He quipped as we negotiate with them in a low voice: "Pasensya na po talaga mam, wala po akong magawa kasi utos sa taas eh." (I apologize, I am just obeying orders from superiors)One of senior policemen in Aguinaldo Hi-way said this as we were let go of our way after more than 20 minutes: "Pakisabi pasensya na lang po kay Dean Esmilla" (Please express my apologies to Dean Esmilla). Dean Esmilla is the former dean of our College of Law Enforcement and Public Safety.Going back to these words and most especially the faces of these policemen as they uttered words of I may say despair and hopelessness (for th...
Fairness, Justice and Adultery

I broke one of my golden rules recently.I asked my friend Dave* to lie for me should the need arise.Ordinarily, I would never do this. I make a point of not telling those who know and meet W anything about my philandering ways.It isn't so much a trust or a security thing. It is simply about being fair. I wouldn't appreciate having to compromise my own integrity to cover up for even the closest friend's crimes. And so, unless it were unavoidable, I wouldn't put someone else in that position either. The way I look at it, when I compromise my integrity then it should be solely for my own personal benefit and pleasure. And Cate's.Anyway, on this occasion I was concerned that I had not covered my tracks sufficiently, and so my rule was broken for the first time. And it was was a good thing too because a good friend of W's asked Dave a question which could, had he answered truthfully, have landed me in deep doodoo.Fortunately, Dave seemed to enjoy his task. He chuckled as he realised...
Super Delegates and Fairness
2008-02-18 13:15:00
All this discussion of Democratic Super Delegates begins to approach absurdity. Most annoying is the question of fairness. Is it fair, ask about a million journalists per hour, that after all the voting and caucusing, the Super Delegates may decide who wins the nomination?First, that is an unbelievably stupid question. Of course it’s fair. The rules were written well in advance, all the candidates understood those rules, and nothing has changed in the interim. Is it fair that one basketball team can make fewer shots than another and still win the game because more of their baskets came from beyond the three-point line? Yes, obviously it is since that’s what the rule book prescribes. There are three problems here that all intersect to create the current controversy. First, the news media have done a characteristically poor job of explaining how the Democratic nomination system works. By neglecting to discuss the role of Super Delegates until the campaign between Hillary Clinton an...
GOP vs. fairness
2008-02-17 06:51:00
The Republican Party exhibits an incredible disregard for the concept of fairness and justice there days. Case in point: California's budget deficit. As if it wasn't enough that they got Democrats to agree to cutting social services, rather than increasing taxes on the rich (those making $1 million/yr. or more), they have blocked a bill in the state assembly that would have closed a loophole in the state sales tax on luxury yachts and super high-end conspicuous consumption. In other words, California's Republicans favor burdening children, the sick and the elderly with the burden of the current deficit rather than the super-rich. Why tax the conspicuous consumption of multi-millionaires when you can deprive children of a better education and health care? At this point I am going to seriously question the moral judgment of these lawmakers, for it seems that common sense and the concept of fairness elude these Republican lawmakers (note that some GOP assemblymen did vote in favor o...

In fairness, I think our a lot of our invisibility...
2008-01-03 03:26:00
In fairness, I think our a lot of our invisibility is due to overall math/science anxiety, which hit our generation especially hard. Translation = fear of computers. For some incomprehensible reason, women not afraid of heavy machinery (I am) or who can instantly convert portions of complicated recipes into advanced fractions (I can't), seem to think computers are frightening. Where did that come from? The cut-off point seems to be our age-group, though. I've asked middle-class, educated women my age and older if they have private, non-work-related email, and they often act like I've asked if they have an extra Mercedes in the garage. By contrast, ALL young women (sometimes even virtually homeless) still have email accounts that they know to access through libraries and friend's homes. Shadocat, I was thinking today that the only time middle-aged women are allowed on TV, is on CIALIS (and similar erectile-dysfunction drug) commercials. It's kinda weird, since you'd th...

Demand for Tax Fairness, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2007-10-29 06:00:00
Washington, DC - Congressman Ron Paul has signed on to a letter directed to the leadership of the House Ways and Means Committee asking them to continue allowing sales taxes to be deductible on Federal Income Tax returns. This deduction is set to expire at the end of this year. State income taxes are deductible on federal income tax returns, however Texas and six other states do not have a state income tax, relying instead on sales taxes for revenue. This puts residents of these states on unequal footing if the sales tax deduction is allowed to expire. read more

Fairness is a lot like dinosaurs.
2007-08-13 18:19:00
Let me explain.1. Dinosaurs are extinct. So is fairness. At one time the world was overwhelmed by giant lizards. There was also a time when the world had some sort of a moral compass. This was before this blurred sense of what fair really is came into being. This was before people sued for spilt hot coffee, or eating too much McDonalds, or psychological trauma bull-crap. This was before steroids were commonplace in baseball, and before celebrities were treated as exceptions (or maybe before celebrities altogether). Fairness no longer exists in its true form anymore.2. We might think it would be awesome to have them back at first, but remember Jurassic Park.Yeah, let’s bring back the dinosaurs. That would be so cool! Wait, isn’t that what they did in Jurassic Park? That didn’t work out that well.Maybe we should also think about that before we start an ethical revolution. Yes, it is easy to see that our morals are lacking and something needs to change, but let’s keep in mind th...

?Is not fair??
2007-07-31 02:10:00
My children often complain ?It is not fair?. They are comparing all kinds of things, privileges to go out with parents, size of birthday cakes, stories mum read, pencils received in different colours, and (always, his colours is nice than mine)?.I am always trying to be a fair mother, but soon I find there is no absolute fairness in this world. I have to take my youngest son with me every time I run errands, am I not fair to my other children? I have to spend more with one of my sons with his reading, while my daughter is proficient in reading without even by my help, so am I not fair?I have to punish the bigger one when fighting happened between two of them. Our rule is the big is required always to give in to the younger, am I not being unfair?I have to give more food to my eldest son, for he has been on the growing spurge at the age of 8. ?..Fairness is only found in principle, however, not in absolute quantity. The Fairness Fairies’ Tough Row to Hoe
2007-07-28 11:30:00
In the name of all that is just, equal, and above all FAIR, our champions of same (i.e. the Lefties) have courageously proffered the re-instatement of the Fairness Doctrine. So doing would ensure that the rabid, blood-thirsty, hate-mongering of talk radio be always tempered by equal portions of principled Progressivism. While the Fairness Fairies were dealt a slight blow, earlier this month, they, nonetheless, persist undaunted. Thus far, the Fairness Fairies have primarily focused their efforts on sanitizing talk radio. Recent developments, however, have brought to light the urgent need for extending the Fairness Doctrine’s glorious leveling blades deep into ALL forms of public expression. For example, The New Republic, having published a series of utterly fabricated articles intended solely to slander the character of the United States Military , would – were the Fairness Doctrine in place – be now required to run a nice story about our men and women in uniform handing out p...
A quick note about capitalism and fairness
2007-07-24 01:30:00
In the ideal capitalist society a person is to be rewarded in accordance to his or her contribution. Yet, we may never achieve this ideal with income not always being representative of contributions. Each from their ability according to their contributions, one might say. What constitutes a contribution? Any action that benefits the general well-fare of society. Unfortunately a perfect capitalist mixed economy cannot exist as it would require people to be completely rational, constantly making the best decisions for themselves and others. Human nature is simply not perfect enough for the perfect capitalist society. In our society, people are – roughly speaking – rewarded for possessing skills that are perceived to be scarce – these commonly coincide with their perceived impact on satisfying society’s wants. They are not always paid in accordance to their contributions in raising society’s well-fare. Generally speaking those who contribute more commonly receive more. Those w...

Fairness Doctrine making a comeback?
2007-07-16 15:28:00
Here in Nashville radio is much like any other major town. There are the oldies stations, the hip-hop stops, and a plethora of country stations. There is also no shortage of talk radio. One particular station, 99.7fm WWTN particularly comes to mind. In the morning drive there's Ralph Bristol, followed by midday with Michael DelGiorno, finance guy Dave Ramsey, and then Phil Valentine on your way home. Ramsey notwithstanding (his show is not about politics), they are all conservatives. Bristol is a quasi-libertarian, DelGiorno is a Christo-Republican, and Valentine is also very much to the right. Liberals have tried to come on the airways I'm sure, but to no avail. Why? They just do not sell. Simply put, the majority of people don't want them. Nationally the scene is similar. While Hannity, Limbaugh, and Savage are doing quite well, Air America, and other such liberal outlets flounder into the past. People just don't want to listen. They have enough influence on the major network...
Senate Democrats Support the Fairness Doctrine by Blocking a Crucial Amendm
2007-07-15 06:11:00
In an act of pure arrogance and stupidity, Senate Democrats on Friday blocked an amendment that would have prevented the return of the Fairness Doctrine, a federal rule that gives the government, not only the ability to license and regulate the public airways, but allows government control of political content as well. South Dakota Sen. John Thune, Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman and other Republicans have been attempting to mirror the actions of Mike Pence (R-IN). Pence effectively thwarted the reimplementation of the Fairness Doctrine in the House of Representatives. We should all be proud to have politicians working for the American people as diligently at him. Sadly, however, when Coleman (R-Minn.), tried to bring up his amendment Friday to a defense authorization bill, Democrat Senator Carl Levin objected. More frightening, Senator Levin is not the only communist who supports the Fairness Doctrine. For example, Senator John Kerry, Senator Dick Durbin, and Dianne Feinstein s...
A Battle Over The Fairness Doctrine?
2007-07-13 12:26:00
No problem. Bring it on. That is, of course, as long as it's a "fair" fight. That means to include the overwhelmingly liberal National Pablum Radio, which we as taxpayers are forced to fund. And also the print media, which the author of the following piece indicates has always been exempt. Considering the fact that the print media uses our public thoroughfares to distribute their wares, including them in a renewed quest for a re-issuance of the Fairness Doctrine would only be "fair", right? Liberals are hailing a report that calls for federal regulations to end the "structural imbalance in political talk radio." Two think tanks, the Center for American Progress and the Free Press, complain that more than 90 percent of the programs on talk radio feature conservative hosts and themes while only 10 percent are "progressive." Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has promised to examine the report's recommendations for possible legislation and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., says flatly, "It'...
