Binghamton Shooting the Work of the Pashtun, And Other Fairy Tales
2009-04-04 16:53:00
Joyner this morning, sounds rather incredulous, as well he might, when he relates to us the claim of Baitullah Mehsud: The diminutive Mehsud is considered the prime suspect in the murder of Benazir Bhutto and he’s taken seriously.  But most are skeptical. of this latest claim. U.S. officials were not immediately available for comment about Mehsud’s claim, but Pakistani security analysts dismissed it as a publicity stunt.  The New York Times quoted representative Maurice Hinchey, whose district includes the town of Binghamton in New York state where the shooting took place, as saying indications were the gunman was an immigrant from Vietnam. I suppose anything’s possible but it strains credulity that a Pashtun tribal leader has a network that includes Vietnamese immigrants in upstate New York. Indeed, just so, James. First of all, let’s look at what we know about the individual in question and see what fits. I live about three hours out of Binghamton. I’ve worked ...

More ?Freedom? Fairy Tales From Dubya

(And by the way, I also posted here.)In yesterday?s New York Times, writer James Traub profiled Dubya?s ?legacy project,? or whatever it?s being called this week, on the grounds of Southern Methodist University (a background video follows with Keith Olbermann and Jim Moore of HuffPo from last Friday ? spares me from having to go over all the details again)..msnbcLinks {font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; text-align: center; width: 425px;} .msnbcLinks a {text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px;} .msnbcLinks a:link, .msnbcLinks a:visited {color: #5799db !important;} .msnbcLinks a:hover, .msnbcLinks a:active {color:#CC0000 !important;} I thought Traub?s report was pretty good, and he basically captured all of the angst arising from this attempt by the Bushies to rewrite history, but I just wanted to point out a couple of excerpts?T...
Buddy?s Book of Fairy Tales - When Dragons? Hearts Were Good
2008-09-10 19:06:00
Reposted and Revised– Bible Fairy Tales. This is what this book When Dragons Hearts Were Good (1999, Master Books) made for little children is all about. Buddy Davis, sculptor and songwriter (But in no way a true certified paleo-artist), wrote and published this small children’s book based on one of his most idiotic of songs. The book is also illustrated by the same man, Dan Lietha, who created a comic strip propaganda series After Eden and Creation Wise, a series that became a subject of parodies being made to refute the claims made by YECs found within the series as shown here. Nothing to review in detail really. There are lots of things worth noting in this book, though, such as the indoctrination of deluding the minds of young children to the point where they cannot tell dinosaur from dragon. This except from the book, found on page 18, is an direct example of this, “One of the strangest pair of [sic] dragons, the stegosaurs, had triangular-shaped plates which ...

The Science of Fairy Tales
2008-05-22 13:30:00
Kids of any age love to read fairy tales because the storyline never limits the possibility that anything could happen. Curses, spells, and handsome princes reign in worlds beyond the reader?s imagination. But are the most magical moments from some of our favorite stories actually possible? Basic physical principles and recent scientific research suggest that what readers might mistake for fantasies and exaggeration could be rooted in reality. So suspend your imagination for a moment, and look at the following fairy tales as a hard-core scientist might. Rapunzel In the Brothers Grimm story of Rapunzel, a witch holds a beautiful young woman captive in a tower. Rapunzel is blessed with a lovely singing voice and long, long blond hair. One day, her voice enchants a prince passing through a nearby forest. They fall in love, and Rapunzel lets down her hair so that the prince may use it to climb the tower to meet her. This chain of events begs readers to ask a question. Can huma...

Fairy Tales

A parents group I belong to jokes about Disney’s willingness to kill off all the mothers in their movies. I made an offhand remark to Princess at lunch one day about it. She was totally surprised! She went through all our animated movies in her head and realized it was true, and she’d never even noticed. Even those protagonists who had mothers weren’t with them -Sleeping Beauty was sent away to be raised, and Dumbo’s mother was incarcerated. The only exception was Mulan. Why? she asked. I told her it was because mothers tended to protect children from the trouble they get into in fairy tales. And that made me realize that Disney is doing it right. We can tell our kids that the frightening things that happen in fairy tales could never happen to you, because mama protects you. Maybe cinema matricide isn’t such a bad idea after all! The science of fairy tales
2008-02-18 08:51:00
Chris Gorski from the American Institute of Physics takes a look at some classic fairy tales and asks (just for fun) if it would be possible to duplicate some of their "magical moments" in real life. So, could human hair support the weight of another person, for example, as when the prince climbs up a tower using Rapunzel's hair? Here's the answer.

A Tale of Two Timelines (and other fairy tales)
2008-02-02 05:23:00
One of the more revealing exchanges from last night's Democratic debate was one that revolved around the respective strategies that Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama would employ in withdrawing troops from Iraq. While Mr. Obama has been fairly straightforward about his desire to remove combat forces within 16 months of his inauguration, Ms. Clinton has consistently offered a less than direct (and typically Clintonesque) response to the effect of wanting to remove troops "as quickly and responsibly as possible," while not committing to a specific end date. One of last evening's co-questioners, Doyle McManus of the L.A. Times, directly asked Clinton if her position "could turn into an open-ended commitment." While it's not worth it to recapitulate her entire answer - suffice it to say that although she wanted to begin a withdrawal within her first 60 days, she still could only "hope" to get all troops out within a year - she once again made the point that she would have to acco...
Humans Do Not Need to Comfort Themselves With Fairy Tales
2008-01-24 10:14:00
A response to Peter Bowden?s ?God, Atheism, and Human Needs? Kelly O?Connor Jan. 24, 2008 The idea that human beings universally need some form of mythological belief has been one of the mainstays of the defenders of faith for centuries. They claim that even if god doesn?t exist or religion causes violence and hatred, it?s acceptable because it makes some people feel better about the harsh realities of life. This is a multi-pronged deceptive ploy used to abdicate themselves from any responsibility for those actions and to keep people thinking that their assertion is correct. Fairy Tales and Reality
2008-01-14 14:15:00
Well, the Winter of Love didn't last very long. Was it only a week ago that everybody on television was busy pronouncing the end to racial discrimination in the United States? The results of the Iowa caucuses turned some rather formidable brains into a mush of Hallmark Channel tearjerkers and ABC After School Specials. This was not simply one man's triumph against the political odds, we were told, but rather one of those transcendent American moments that tell us who we are and how far we have come: Neil Armstrong, meet Barack Obama. One reporter, in the full throes of premature exultation, pointed out that Obama "won in an overwhelmingly white state, suggesting that the country might be moving to a new era in which race no longer defines identity as it has throughout U.S. history".What a difference a loss makes! The first murmurs began almost immediately after Hillary Clinton took to the podium in New Hampshire, claiming her upset victory in the nation's first presidential primar...

GRIM FAIRY TALES FOR MODERN TIMES
2007-11-30 08:31:00
by Nancy CaroniaIf, at the beginning of the 21st century, Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger on the spinning wheel—a cursed act that anesthetized an entire kingdom—there would be no prince to climb the thorny walls and plant a kiss. Contemporary male royalty gets too horny planning the next invasion, entering (or exiting) rehab or trolling bars (or executive offices) searching for the perfect mouth to kiss their cocks goodnight. No one, it seems, wants a relationship anymore. A fetishistic furor might be whipped up if the kingdom’s itinerant administration—set up at the time of the prick in faraway New York City’s Gramercy Park—put the Beauty’s slumbering figure on the Internet, but her body would need to be stripped—creamy flesh exposed to the masses of insensitive gawkers who only hoped to catch a glimpse of the numbed out princess awakening to an autoerotic act. There would be no conversation of her award-winning spinning skill. Her kindness to orphaned children i...

Book of Fairy Tales
2007-11-27 21:05:00
A book of fairy tales created, handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling sold for nearly $4 million at auction Thursday. The buyer, Web retailer Amazon.com Inc., now owns one of only seven copies of "The Tales of Beedle the Bard," which is leather bound with silver mounts.Amazon, in its unaccustomed position as a buyer rather than seller of books, was represented by London art agent Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox.The book originally had been expected to sell for about $100,000. The standing-room-only crowd at Sotheby's auction house applauded as bidding topped the $2 million mark. The money will benefit The Children's Voice, a charity co-founded in 2005 by Rowling and Baroness Nicholson, a member of Britain's House of Lords.Rowling, 42, watched the auction on the Web from her home in Edinburgh, Scotland, and said she was ecstatic."This will mean so much to children in desperate need of help," she said in a statement. "It means Christmas has come early to me."Amazon.com posted a handful...
Fairy Tales From The Old Gray Lady
2007-11-26 22:19:00
No sooner do I finish posting on Trent Lott than I notice this from kos; he tells us that the New York Times reported that the Senate?s Jim Crow descendent??has made no secret of his deepening frustration in the Senate, not only because his party is in the minority but also because an increasingly bitter partisan divide this year has left little use for his skills as a deal-maker.I really wish that, for moments when the Times decides to shill for the Repugs, they run a disclaimer next to the affected copy just so we know what they?re doing (?oooh, such partisanship in Congress!! Harrummph!? And no, I don?t like it either, but the ?P? word is Beltway code for the Dems standing up and actually telling the Repugs from time to time that they?re a bunch of full-mooner crazies, as kos tells us).Well, since the Times has chosen to play this game, I should point out two similar instances of ?carrying the GOP water? over the weekend. The first appeared here on Saturday from Times reporter She...

Fairy Tales: Horror for the Making
2007-10-29 19:39:00
Monika Bartyzel, on cinematical,  wonders “why we don’t get many classic fairy tale horror movies. I’m not referring to reimagining familial tales into something more adult (like Dorothy and BDSM), but rather going back to the source of the fairy tale”: Hansel and Gretel: A family is starving, burning of the old woman, and her cannibalistic dreams. That the mother or stepmother happens to die when the children have killed the witch has suggested to many commentators that the mother or stepmother and the witch are, in fact, the same woman. Sleeping Beauty: Originally published by Charles Perrault, the story consisted of two parts. The first is what we’re familiar with, except that the prince raped the sleeping girl. Then there is Part 2: Attempted infanticide and cannibalism, war, and an Ogress Queen torn apart by snakes and vipers. Red Riding Hood: In an earlier version, the wolf was a werewolf, and he feeds grandma’s blood and meat to the li...

Business Fables, Fairy Tales, Stories and Management LessonsA young Man had been caught in a daring act of theft and had been condemned to be executed for it. He expressed his desireto see his Mother, and to speak with her before he was led toexecution, and of course this was granted. When his Mother came to him he said: "I want to whisper to you," and when she brought her ear near him, he nearly bit it off.All the bystanderswere horrified, and asked him what he could mean by such brutal and inhuman conduct. "It is to punish her," he said."When I was young I began with stealing little things, and brought them home to Mother. Instead of rebuking andpunishing me, she laughed and said: "It will not be noticed."It is because of her that I am here to-day.""He is right, woman," said the Priest; "the Lord hath said:"Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart therefrom."Moral:Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is oldhe will not depart...

Don't You Just Love Chicago Fairy Tales?

Don't you just love Chicago Fairy Tales? They're almost like Russian Fairy Tales, but without the little house that walks on the legs of a chicken. Instead, Chicago Fairy Tales sometimes involve condos at preconstruction prices, walking around on the pink, hairless feet of a rat. My favorite Chicago Fairy Tales include: The Chicago Outfit didn't intend to kill Mayor Anton Cermak. Sen. Barack

This project is part of a body of research that focuses on relational and ubiquitous performance. Investigating historical performance-centric contexts and adapting new scenarios for wearable and sensing technologies, “Peau d’Âne” seeks to create a bridge between the symbolic percipience of fairy tales and current technological innovation. In particular, this project explores the potential for wearables to become agents of performativity. I am a total fan of Valérie Lamontagne's work. She interprets one of my favorite Charles Perrault fairy tale “Peau d’Âne” by giving life to the 'impossible' dresses that a young princess orders her stepfather to thwart marrying him. These three dresses made of immaterial materials. The first is to be made of the “sky” and should be as light and airy as the clouds. The second is to be made of “moonbeams” and should reflect the same lyrical intensity as the moon at night. The third, and last, is to be made of “sunlight” ...
