“We have apparently reliable evidence that an Argentine task force will gather off Cape Pembroke [East Falkland] early tomorrow morning, 2 April. You will wish to make your dispositions accordingly.” So read the characteristically understated telegram from the Foreign Office to the Falkland Islands? Governor, Rex Hunt, dispatched 30 years ago. And so it came ...

Falklands: Here we go again
2008-04-03 14:28:00
BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, which remain in British hands after the 1982 war between the two countries, is “inalienable,” President Cristina Kirchner said Wednesday. The sovereign claim to the Malvinas Islands is inalienable,” she said in a speech marking the 26th anniversary of Argentina’s ill-fated invasion of the islands, located 480 kilometers (300 miles) off shore. The April 2, 1982 invasion prompted then British prime minister Margaret Thatcher to deploy naval forces to retake the Falklands, known as the Malvinas in Spanish. There’s two reasons for this coming up just now;   1: Kirchner needs the diversion from her problems at home 2: She knows the Brits are not likley to put up the fuss they did last time. Brown is no Thatcher, and England is no longer England. Technorati Tags: England, Falkland Islands

Argentina claims Falklands, again
2007-04-09 19:29:00
You may recall it’s been about 25 years… nearly to the day… that the UK was embroiled in the Falklands dispuite. CNN is reporting today:   BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) – Argentina marked the 25th anniversary of its failed attempt to regain the Falkland Islands by force on Monday and reasserted claims to the South Atlantic archipelago. “Neither war nor the passage of time changes reality: The Malvinas are Argentine,” said Vice President Daniel Scioli, using the islands’ Argentine name, as 5,000 people, many of them veterans of the 1982 war with Britain, applauded. “We call upon the United Kingdom to heed international calls and resume negotiations,” Scioli said during the ceremony in Argentina’s southernmost city of Ushuaia — 440 miles (710 kilometers) southwest of the islands.
