FASHION Magazine’s Men’s Fall Style Special Event
2009-09-21 19:00:00
FASHION Magazine's Men's Fall Style Special Event I attended the FASHION Magazine’s Men’s Fall Style Special Event last week. I brought The Grumpy Owl with me since he sometimes concerns himself with fashionable things. The party was to celebrate the launch of the FASHION Magazine’s Men’s Fall Style Special supplement. It’s a magazine created by the Fashion Magazine team dedicated to men’s fashion. There were cigars and a small cigar lounge setup outside. The Grumpy Owl bought a nice cigar and enjoyed it on the patio. There were canapes and drinks at the party but we were also treated to a Hugo Boss Fall 2009 fashion show. The Men’s Fashion Fall 2009 supplement is pretty good. I love the product offering and the way they are displayed. There is also a long article demystifying men’s grooming by Andrew Sardone. I LOVE the men’s editorial though. Here are two images to get your hungry to find it. FASHION Magazine'...

Green Nail Polish Alternative: Trendy Biodegradable Polish In Fall?s Hottes

new fall bar menu in creation
2009-09-20 00:37:00
Daniel Sviland is our "mixologist".  Basically he is the person that creates the bar menu and then makes it happen.  Sometimes we collaborate a little on what goes into the drinks.  An example of that was this week, I was at the Green City Market and there are 5 or 6 different varieties of grapes that Mick Klug is selling.  Some of them have a very short season. They are so delicious, if you have never eaten a local grape it is a real treat.  So, I thought about how I would use them on the menu and then I thought I bet Dan would love to "create" something delicious with these grapes.  I asked him if he wanted me...

Berlin: The fall of the wall, 20 years later
2009-09-15 17:19:00
A stretch of the wall at the East Side Gallery. Photo by Franz Patzig. By Susan Buzzelli in Berlin— On November 9, thousands of Berliners, visitors, and VIPs, including Kofi Annan and Mikhail Gorbachev, will gather at the base of the Brandenburg Gate to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But you don’t have to wait until the action-packed Fest der Freiheit (Festival of Freedom) to pay tribute to Germany’s division into East and West between 1961 and 1989. Dozens of exhibits, concerts, tours, readings, and more related to life and times on both sides of the Mauer are dominating the Berlin’s cultural calendar this fall. Seeing Red Information about Wall-related happenings isn’t hard to gather. Painted a jarring shade of tomato red, the Infotreppe (Info stairs, Washingtonplatz, U- and S-bahn: Hauptbahnhof), a staircase parked in front of the Hauptbahnhof (central train station), offers a multimedia exhibit and tips about how to celebrate the Wall d...

Isn’t It About Time For The Fall Television Season To Start?
2009-09-10 19:28:00
I have this giant calendar in my dining room that I use to keep organized with a color-coded system. Financial things, like paydays and bill due dates are written in green; work schedules are in black; the girl’s activities are in blue; and important events like parties and appointments are in red. I also have a post-it note system, but that doesn’t matter because what I really want to tell you is MY RED PEN IS MISSING which may not seem like a big deal, but OH MY GOODNESS IT IS. Of all the pens to disapear, the red is the most important. Now, my whole system is screwed, I’ll probably overlook picture day now that it’s in blue and not red and I mostly just want to kick things. Additionally, Julia’s black leotard is missing. And I have seven sippy cups and only three sippy cup lids. Also, all of my medium size plastic containers are gone. This is how people go insane, my friends. I know because I accused Dave of stealing all my missing items and...
10 Tips for Breathing Easy this Fall
2009-09-08 23:39:00
Fall is right around the corner and allergens are in full force! Pollen, ragweed, and mold are still taking their toll on allergy sufferers. These are harmless substances for most; but for some they take the enjoyment out of Fall. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, roughly 20% of Americans suffer from allergies and another 20% suffer from hypersensitivities to food, environmental substances, or stimuli.

Our 3rd Annual Guess the Cover Contest: Entertainment Weekly Fall TV Previe
2009-09-08 03:59:00
It’s the most wonderful time of year. That magical time when we put aside our mild disappointment in our bible’s penchant for occasionally making us feel like we’ve subscribed to Twilight Weekly, in order to play our all-time favorite guessing game: Predict what TV show will grace the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s annual Fall TV Preview. But before we get to the game, a few fun facts if we may. As you may-or-may-not recall from previous years, theTVaddict.com’s non-existent crack research staff has done a little digging and come to the conclusion that EW’s Fall TV Preview issue traditionally falls into one of two categories: Either highlighting one of the fall’s most buzzed about new shows (see covers for JOEY, PRIVATE PRACTICE and Jennifer Love Hewitt all-but-forgotten bomb TIME OF MY LIFE) or rewards the previous season’s ‘it’ show such as GOSSIP GIRL, DAWSON’S CREEK or LOST. Something else to consider before making your predicti...

MCA Stage Series: videos and fall schedule
2009-09-03 22:06:00
Text by Monica LaBelle Videos captured and embedded by Kathryn Born The Museum of Contemporary Art unveiled its upcoming stage season Wednesday, presenting a mélange of performances from theater to dance to film. Those expecting much programming of the straight-up performance art variety might be disappointed. But fear not! The programming of the season is still young, and Director of Performance Programs Peter Taub acknowledged that, as in previous seasons, additional artists will be scheduled throughout the season.  MCA administrators emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of the upcoming season as part...
I'm teaching film editing at Columbia College this Fall
2009-09-03 04:26:00
Now that I'm an Assistant Professor in the Department of Film & Video at Columbia College Chicago, I start teaching classes next week.I'm teaching Editing 1 and Editing 2, and I couldn't be more excited. I always had such a great time teaching film production at UCLA and I can't wait to get started sharing my love of the filmmaking process with the next generation of filmmakers here in the Windy City.Everyone that I've met at Columbia so far has been really amazing, and I'm just so humbled to be a part of such a talented and diverse group of people. Both the faculty and the student body at Columbia are really special, and I'm just honored to be a part. I can't wait to meet my students and get started!
Fall Preview 09: COMMUNITY
2009-09-02 00:18:00
You’ve seen the teasers. You’ve heard the hype. Now there’s only one thing you want to know: Which of the new fall shows are worth watching and which should be avoided at all costs? In this continuing series, we give you the scoop on some of the most highly-anticipated shows of the season. Which will be the next GREY’S ANATOMY… and which will be the new JOEY? Next up, in its quest to ensure Thursday night really is ‘Comedy Night Done Right,’ NBC goes back to school with COMMUNITY. Why We’ll Watch: Joel McHale, Chevy Chase and THE DAILY SHOW’s John Oliver are just a few of the reasons why we can’t wait for school to start at the fictional Community College of Greendale. Other reasons include the brains behind COMMUNITY — who are none other than Dan Harmon (THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM) and directors Joe and Anthony Russo (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) — all of whom not only get an ‘A’ for effort, but a ‘B’ for big laughs. Thanks...
fall colors
2009-09-01 23:51:00
No, not reds and golds. How about orange and fuchsia? Shredded beet and carrot salad, a great fall dish. Shredded raw beets and carrots tossed in oil and vinegar (and a dash of sweetness if you like, raisins, cranberries, apples, whatever). Yum. And all that color has to be good for us as we gear up for school starting. Not that the Kid would eat this….but maybe yours will! This is the first I’ve made this dish and I loved it. Fall in Alaska
2009-09-01 10:00:00
This is what I'm seeing right now on this dark and stormy day--see those leaves? See them? Yes, they're turning brown. You also see my phlox to the left there, which always is the last thing blooming in my garden but the crab apple trees are dropping their leaves and the birch are turning yellow (though some of that is from the infestation of leaf miner beetles all over town).I'm staying inside, baking banana muffins. Partially to be a good mom and partially to cover the smell of halibut leftover from last night's dinner. I hate it when dinner smells linger too long. Especially the fishy ones.I'll leave you with a few fun things--first, here's a great article from the Wall Street Journal about the future of the novel. I found it interesting, good for some speculation.Second, here's the trailer for the new movie The Men Who Stare at Goats. I have no idea what it's going to be rated but it looks like a movie I would love. George Clooney can be the funniest thing when given the...

BBQ for fall
2009-09-01 00:48:00
This weekend's chilly weather had us hankering for the savory smells of summer grilling. We're talking barbecue, people! Namely smoked baby-back ribs and slow-cooked brisket smothered in barbecue sauce at Smoque BBQ. Yuuum. If you've never been (and judging by the endless lines, we're betting you have), this little Portage Park quick-serve dishes out heaping helpings of grilled summery bliss no matter what the temperature. We suggest sampling the barbecue pork with sides of seasoned fries, cole slaw (which we chose to eat atop the sandwich, thank you) and mac 'n' cheese. Yep, this no doubt will be our go-to spot when the weather turns permanently frigid.Pray tell, at which city spots are you bottling summer fun in time for fall? We're making our...

Fall Preview 09: TRAUMA
2009-08-25 18:43:00
By: Melissa Girimonte, The Televixen You’ve seen the teasers. Next up, NBC attempts to recapture its former ER glory with TRAUMA.  Why We’ll Watch:  Monday nights are perfect for mindless entertainment, so why not spend some time with the paramedics at San Francisco General as they respond to medical emergencies by land, air and water?  The characters while imperfect, are likeable (Particularly Rabbit (Cliff Curtis), the reckless yet vulnerable flight medic, and Nancy (Anastasia Griffith), an MD who chose to be a paramedic). Which luckily for NBC goes a long way in making up for the series’ been there, done that feeling. Seriously...

MMA Where Does it Fall? Sport, Art, Style???
2009-08-23 16:17:00
The worldwide practice of martial arts includes millions of people.  In the span of the last 500 years martial arts has evolved and on a micro-cosmic (micro-scopic) level several styles some have progresses more than others.  Over the past five centuries, some disciplines are growing faster than others offering new techniques that even give way to the emergence of new systems.  As a whole, all styles of martial arts are considered to share the active purpose of improving awareness, health and the confidence of its practitioners.  ...
Fall Office Fashions: Eco-Friendly Designs By Feral Childe
2009-08-23 05:05:00
Office wear doesn't need to be boring, most companies are embracing contemporary trends that are still conservative enough for the workplace. Well, that is unless you're my former employer who believed in the man?s style blazers andpantyhose in the non-air conditioned office in summer; completely limiting by ability of introducing anything alternative into the office. Designer Feral Childe certainly doesn?t follow the same beliefs, since not only have they introduced a new line of office appropriate wear that?s verging on contemporary, it?s also eco-friendly.
Gatlinburg Vacations In The Fall
2009-08-22 18:08:00
Fall is just around the corner so that means it’s time to start planning your Gatlinburg Vacations so you don’t miss the beautiful changing colors in the mountains around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Obviously the Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area will all change later in the fall than Vermont and Maine so you will want to plan accordingly. Look for the height of the fall colors on the trees to be around late October to early November depending on several factors which include previous rainfall, current dryness and a nice cold snap, but not a freezing one, before the height of the color season. There are many places around Gatlinburg where you can see the beautiful leaves, but usually in the higher elevations will give you the best chance of seeing the most color. Fall is a great time of the year to take a Gatlinburg Vacation, not only because of the beautiful colors, but because of additional events taking place throughout the area for the ...

Fire 0 -- Galaxy 2: Fire Fall Flat
2009-08-20 06:33:00
In an effort that can only be classified as pathetic, the Fire lost for the third time in four games Wednesday night, this time falling to the L.A. Galaxy by a score of 2-0. "If you can't get up for big games like this I don't know what the problem is," said Fire keeper Jon Busch. "This is a big game. This is when big players step up. It doesn't have to be fancy soccer it has to be effective soccer and it was not effective. It doesn't matter about flicks and fancy and I can put a ball here and I can put a ball there, that's bulls**t. The bottom line is about effective soccer and it was...
Countdown to Fall: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
2009-08-19 20:00:00
I took four seasons (and arguably a little help from time-slot lead-in THE BIG BANG THEORY) but audiences (and best of all, the Emmy nominating committee) finally discovered what this TV Addict has known for years now: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER = Awesome! What’s more, it’s about to get even awesomer (and yes, if Barney uses it, it is in fact a word!) “For a long time the mother was in this big vast ocean of New York City and we ended the season with Ted teaching at Columbia University,” teased executive producer Craig Thomas in a recent interview with EW’s Michael Ausiello. “Having Ted literally in the same room as the mother has added a great suspense element in the writing,” And speaking of suspense, what about the relationship fans have really been buzzing about all summer long, that of Robin and Barney, whose will-they-or-won’t-they status was left somewhat up the air after last spring’s finale. Well, judging from a third episode...
Internet Gangsta or Fall Guy for the Dark Cloud?
2009-08-19 02:00:00
I think most of us have heard this proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child,” (popularized by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton). It also, though, takes a community to raise a criminal, to foster him or her and to create the economies that allow criminals to “cash out” effectively.
Countdown to Fall: THE BIG BANG THEORY
2009-08-13 16:16:00
Think different is so 2005. Which is why our vote for the new season of THE BIG BANG THEORY is think bigger. Not only did CBS show big confidence in the little-series-that-could by renewing it for two seasons, expect big guest stars courtesy of THE DAILY SHOW’s Lewis Black (Who drops by the show’s second episode playing a Professor whose life is in shambles), and big romance when Leonard and Penny finally go where we have a feeling Sheldon has yet to go before (Teased executive producer Bill Prady to EW’s Michael Ausiello, “When they finally make it all the way, they have trouble finding their groove.”) Thankfully, one thing that won’t be getting bigger are the cast’s egos. With star Johnny Galecki remaining refreshingly humble when this TV Addict had the opportunity to interview him at CBS’s recent TCA party (”I can’t imagine the ego trip that you would have to accept to actually become accustom to 4500 screaming fans at C...
Countdown to Fall: PRIVATE PRACTICE
2009-08-12 16:29:00
Getting to the question that has been on every fan’s mind since the moment last season’s credits rolled — Yes, Violet is alive. Picking up a mere twenty minutes after what turned out to be last Spring’s most buzzed about season finale, actress Amy Brennenman (Violet) promises that, “You’re going to see me again.” Yet the question remains, in what condition? Teased PRIVATE PRACTICE creator Shonda Rhimes on this TV Addict’s recent visit to the set, “Obviously Amy is here on set. But the interesting thing is how she lives and whether or not there will be a baby.” ‘Whether or not there will be a baby?’ WhatchutalkinboutShonda! Unfortunately Rhimes, a notorious spoilerphobe isn’t talking — and we should add — has the uncanny ability for saying a lot without saying, well absolutely anything. Thankfully, what she will confirm is that what happened to Violet, in addition to Addison’s choice to walk away from...

Fall Faces to Watch: THE MIDDLE Star Atticus Shaffer
2009-08-10 19:24:00
When your parents name you after a character in To a Kill a Mockingbird, odds are that a flair for the dramatic comes with the territory. Which is why it probably should come as no surprise that Atticus Shaffer, the pint-sized star of ABC’s new family comedy THE MIDDLE is this TV Addict’s first in what we hope will become a series of ‘Fall Faces to Watch.’ Just how talented is this kid? Not only is he the lone survivor of the original pilot — which featured chatfest host Ricki Lake in the Patricia Heaton role — but he manages to completely steal the new version from his on-screen parents, which is no small feat seeing as they’re played by Patricia Heaton (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND) and Neil Flynn (SCRUBS). Said Eileen Heisler, THE MIDDLE creator/executive producer, “Atticus walked in the door and we were done, you know, we’ve got that one.” But don’t take our word for it, judge for yourself when THE MIDDLE premieres this September ...

Fire fall to Tigres in SuperLiga Final
2009-08-06 04:22:00
The Fire's SuperLiga dream came to a not so super close tonight, as the team lost a gutting match to Tigres UANL 4-3 in penalty kicks at Toyota Park. The Fire came out on all cylinders to start the match and they were able to take the early lead in the 10th minute when Patrick Nyarko neatly flicked a Gonzalo Segares cross inside the near post of a diving Cirilo Saucedo from about 6 yards out....
