Jerry Falwell, Jr., endorses Mike Huckabee
2007-11-30 15:35:00
More on God's chosen one, Mike Huckabee. The worm-eaten apple doesn't fall far from the tree... Jerry Falwell, Jr., son of recently departed Jerry Falwell, Sr., no doubt received a lot of divine inspiration before deciding to throw his support behind Huckabee, as reported by Fox News on Wednesday. Here's Huckabee's reaction: The former Arkansas governor and Baptist pastor said Wednesday that prayer has played a big role in his recent polling success. "It defies all explanation, confounds the pundits and I'm enjoying every minute of them trying to figure it out, and until they look at it (as) just experience beyond human they'll never figure out and that's honestly why it's happening," said Huckabee, who appeared with Falwell. Asked if he was saying God is responsible for his surge, Huckabee said he was only referring to prayer: "When people pray, things happen. ... I'm not saying God wants me to be elected. The last time I checked (God) hadn't registered in any of the sta...

Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell dies
2007-06-05 14:08:00
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University. He was 73.Ron Godwin, Liberty's executive vice president, said Falwell had been found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse but noted that Falwell had “a history of heart challenges.”

A Last-Minute Falwell Tribute?
2007-05-29 23:26:00
Gee, I wonder where Ewa Sowinska got this idea? Yet another Polish joke apparently (Eh ohhh)? And speaking of Falwell, I didn?t see anything like the information communicated here from Pastor Dan in the various obits (which isn?t surprising, really), but I want to mention it below (re: the fact that Falwell and ?the base? didn?t do much by themselves to elect Republicans)??What Falwell and (James) Dobson particularly excelled at was creating an activist base. Which is to say, a group of people who followed the news, wrote letters, made phone calls, staffed campaigns and did a thousand other scut jobs to fuel the conservative movement. It's just that that never really translated into that many votes. None that weren't already headed into the Republican column, anyway. Falwell and the Religious Right leaders who came after him may have helped sustain the conservative tide in the 70s and 80s, in other words, but there's little evidence that they did much to create it. That work was la...
Hitchens on Falwell
2007-05-29 15:28:00
So Jerry Falwell has left us. Am I happy? You bet. He was a snide little man, spouting hate and discrimination. He and his cronies offered nothing more than religious dogma with the purpose of getting rich and seeking power. But I do feel sorry for him. I have a lot of sympathy because he died without knowing the true wonder of the planet on which he lived. He wasted his life. For that I feel sorry. He never knew just how lucky he was. “We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ord...

Matt Barber, who has a new title mentioned at the end of the article..."Matt Barber is one of the?like-minded men? with Concerned Women forAmerica. In the title of this article, Barber seems to contend that we are all consumed with hate and self-loathing over our subconscious realization that our lives are inherently sinful. While I wouldn't and haven't made some of the more vicious comments some of my fellow bloggers have made (and that Barber references in this article), I certainly understand where the anger comes f...
Bomb Plot Thwarted at Falwell's Funeral
2007-05-23 06:56:00
From ABC News:Student Arrested With Homemade Bombs, Three Other Suspects Sought May 22, 2007 ? Even in death, the Rev. Jerry Falwell rouses the most volatile of emotions. A small group of protesters gathered near the funeral services to criticize the man who mobilized Christian evangelicals and made them a major force in American politics -- often by playing on social prejudices. A group of students from Falwell's Liberty University staged a counter protest. And Campbell County authorities arrested a Liberty University student for having several homemade bombs in his car. The student, 19-year-old Mark D. Uhl of Amissville, Va., reportedly told authorities that he was making the bombs to stop protesters from disrupting the funeral service. The devices were made of a combination of gasoline and detergent, a law enforcement official told ABC News' Pierre Thomas. They were "slow burn," according to the official, and would not have been very destructive. moreTo stop protesters...

Thousands Turn Out for Falwell FuneralBy SUE LINDSEYThe Associated PressTuesday, May 22, 2007; 2:35 PMLYNCHBURG, Va. -- Thousands of mourners attended the funeral Tuesday of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, the folksy evangelist who built the Moral Majority into a conservative Christian empire that influenced national politics. The funeral returns Falwell to his roots _ the Thomas Road Baptist Church, where he started as a young preacher in 1956 with just 35 parishioners in an old abandoned soda bottling plant.Today, his son Jonathan Falwell leads Thomas Road Baptist, and the sanctuary seats 6,000.More than an hour before the service, crowds were being directed to overflow seating in Liberty University's 10,000-seat basketball arena and its football stadium. About 300 police and other personnel were helping manage the crowd, Lynchburg Police Chief Charles W. The Reverend Falwell's Heavenly Timing
2007-05-20 05:45:00
By Frank RichThe New York TimesHARD as it is to believe now, Jerry Falwell came in second only to Ronald Reagan in a 1983 Good Housekeeping poll anointing ?the most admired man in America.? By September 2001, even the Bush administration was looking for a way to ditch the preacher who had joined Pat Robertson on TV to pin the 9/11 attacks on feminists, abortionists, gays and, implicitly, Teletubbies. As David Kuo, a former Bush official for faith-based initiatives, tells the story in his book ?Tempting Faith,? the Reverend Falwell was given a ticket to the Washington National Cathedral memorial service that week only on the strict condition that he stay away from reporters and cameras. Mr. Falwell obeyed, though once inside he cracked jokes (?Whoa, does she look frumpy,? he said of Barbara Bush) and chortled nonstop. This is the great spiritual leader whom John McCain and Mitt Romney raced to praise when he died on Tuesday, just as the G.O.P. presidential contenders were convergi...

Anti-gay Activist Jerry Falwell Dead at 73He blamed gays and lesbians for the 9/11 terrorist attacks and made himself a household name by claiming Teletubbie Tinky Winky was gay, and now, the founder of the Moral Majority, the Rev. Ron Godwin, Liberty University's executive vice president, told the Associated Press Falwell had been found unresponsive in his office at around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Falwell has a history of heart problems, and while Godwin said he was unsure what caused the collapse, he said the televangelist and outspoken anti-gay rights activist was fine when the two shared breakfast earlier this morning. Falwell founded the Moral Majority in 1979 and became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and served as the school?s chancellor. If You Didn't Agree With Falwell, Then You're Guilty of Hate Speech?
2007-05-17 15:48:00
I expected this, but not to the degree I'm seeing today. The fundies over at OneNewsNow (I'm so going to have to come up with a nickname for them, lol) have implied that anyone who disagreed with Rev. Falwell is guilty of hate speech. Here's an example..."In some of these things I've been looking at he's being called a bigot;[and] some people are absolutely sure that he's going straight to hell," shesays. That reaction, she continues, is to be expected. "I'm not surprised bythis level of vitriol because it seems like it's [coming from] all these peoplewho've just been very angry at him for holding up a standard to which theycouldn't achieve."I hate to break it to these folks, but Falwell was a bigot, plain and simple. As for where his soul now resides...I wouldn't even hazard a guess. But what I'm most insulted about is the statement toward the end of that quote...that I'm angry with Falwell because I couldn't achieve his standard. What makes this author think tha...

Westboro to Picket Falwell's Funeral
2007-05-16 16:35:00
Is there any group that this church (and I use that term very loosely) doesn't hate? According to their latest manifesto (and, no...I won't give you a link to their site), not only will the extreme, batsh*t crazies at Westboro Baptist be picketing Falwell's funeral, but they've given a litany of reasons as to why he is now burning in hell. I was never a fan of Falwell, but no grieving family deserves the kind of treatment that Westboro is notorious for giving. Not only do they regularly picket the funerals of fallen soldiers, but they do so bearing signs reading such hateful things as, "Thank God For Dead Soldiers." Their behavior is abominable and heartless. Mr. Phelps, your behavior bears absolutely no resemblance to the love that Christians and their God are supposed to have. Either walk the talk or shut up!

Rev. Jerry Falwell Dead at 73; "Religious Right" and "Moral Majority" to Fo
2007-05-16 11:10:00
For a "liberal" media, I'm already quite stunned by the impressive and immense media coverage dedicated to Rev. Jerry Falwell's death.Though I am personally and politically biased, Rev. Falwell represented very little to my own perception of what America is about.  I believe in a country rooted in religious tolerance, which offers the citizenry not only the right to practice religion, but choose not to as well.  I believe in a country that should practice democracy, and less theocracy.I believe in a country where morals are to be accepted and practiced by the citizenry, not determined by rich, politically-fueld pastors and members of the clergy. But those are only my own personal beliefs regarding America.  Rev. Falwell clearly had his own perception, which clearly identified with America's "moral majority" and "religious right."  But is Rev. Falwell's death a precursor to the already-fading "religious right" as well?  Ever since the last national electio...

How did Jerry Falwell affect the political landscape?
2007-05-16 07:13:00
Like most on the left, I can't say I will miss Jerry Falwell, the founder of the 'Moral Majority,' who died today at the age of 73. Most of what you will read about him is true. Even people prone to exaggeration probably won't have to go too far to find plenty to write about him. One thing that is undeniably true-- Falwell was an obdurate segregationist most of his life, and only changed when segregation was so far gone that it could no longer be defensible to be in favor of it. They needed a new vehicle and they found it. But it is not true that the 'Moral Majority' coalesced out of nowhere, as it seemed to when Falwell founded it in 1979 and claimed Jimmy Carter as its first victim a year later. I remember talking to a black minister back about 1980, and the topic of the 'Moral Majority' came up, and his observation was simple but powerful-- 'same old segregationists, new packaging.' As recently as the 1980's Falwell preached against interracial marriage and even at t...

Falwell, Flynt and the 'Mamma Shack Scandal'
2007-05-16 05:15:00
Memorable Moments in Video HistoryFlynt and Falwell Face-Off - 1983Nearly a quarter of a century ago, founder of Hustler magazine and one of American celebrity culture's most colorful characters ever, Larry Flynt, turned a courtroom into his own twisted mini-circus as clearly seen in this unusual videotaped deposition. The deposition was ordered by a court after Rev. Jerry Falwell, who died Tuesday, filed a lawsuit against Flynt for libel in 1983.Flynt appears on the video in a hospital bed because of the paralysis he suffered from an assassin’s bullet a few years before.Flynt openly mocks the legal proceedings during the deposition, repeatedly answering "no" to the common swearing in: “do you swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” Flynt refused to answer "yes". A number of times during the video deposition, Flynt, who appears medicated, stares and smirks at Falwell (who is off-camera). He also claimed to be just about everyone - from Christ...
Jerry Falwell Dies
2007-05-16 04:16:00
Today Jerry Falwell, founder of Moral Majority, died at age 73. I'm not going to publically cheer his death, but I will be frank about my feelings on this. In the 1980's Falwell was the face of the Christian Conservative movement. That mantle has since passed to people like James Dobson, but, in his time, Falwell did more to hurt America's civil liberties than anyone else. With his insistence on mixing fundamental Christianity with politics and his demonization of entire segments of society, Falwell's crusade seriously undermined the Constitution, tried to return our society to the Middle Ages, and helped spread "acceptable" forms of hate through his homophobia and dislike for non-Christians. I don't wish death on anyone. I know this life we have is the only one we've got, so everyone's time on Earth is precious. However, I will certainly not miss Falwell and America is better off without him. Good riddance.Black Sun Journal has more on what Falwell did to harm Americ...
