CTA Prez Rodriguez values family time over a CTA commute -- as he should
2009-07-22 13:00:00 The Sun-Times reported Monday that CTA President Richard Rodriguez was yanking the "company cars" that 68 employees could enjoy at home and at work. Rodriguez himself and 37 other top managers making six figures will lose the perk -- or pay about $200 a month plus gas to lease it from the city. Good for him....

They will be going home Sunday afternoon, the blog world will be just fine without me until then… And you ...

4th of July family time
2008-07-05 20:37:00 Our 4th of July usually starts with us getting up early to run in the big race downtown followed by us filling our tummies at the pancake breakfast. Then we come home, get in to our red, white and blue garb, spike the boys’ hair with colored gel, and paint the girls’ toenails with a patriotic theme. In the afternoon we head over to my aunt and uncle’s house to celebrate my cousin’s birthday. And we end the night downtown watching the fireworks over the river. None of that happened yesterday. Now that my cousin is an adult and moved out of his family home there was no party. Since downtown is still recovering from the flood and there is a ton of cleanup going on there was no race, no pancake breakfast and no fireworks. And since we were to exhausted from swimming we didn’t paint our nails or spike our hair. A little part of me is heartbroken that we weren’t able to follow tradition this year. But then another part of me is yelling, “stop bein...

Family Time
2008-06-02 02:00:00 Thank you friends for your well wishes! I am fine now, and so do the kids, praise the Lord! My hubby was away for a week, he will be back on June 3rd so I take care of the kids by myself. I must say that I am quite relieved that I don't take the opportunity to go to Europe with my hubby this time. Clay is having his final test for these 2 weeks so I also am busy preparing him for the test! I am sure I will not be able to enjoy the (free) trip while Clay is facing the final test without his parents... I am glad my mom and grandma visit us this weekend so we don't feel lonely without my hubby around. :-) My grandma is 79 years old and has just got a gall surgery last week! At her age, she can't be covered by insurance like NC health insurance, but thank God all the process went well. She even went home the next day after the surgery, what a strong lady! She got 39 black pebbles in her gall! I am glad all of them are gone now.. phew.... Having a grandma at home (grand-grandma for ...

2008-05-06 03:14:00 Saturday night the Schmitty clan was all sitting around the dining room table coloring. The kids were all clamoring, "Do you like my picture?" "Mommy, how does mine look?" "No look here, how about my coloring?""Good!" "Great!" "Fantastic!"Suddenly, Crack! W. broke a crayon."Oooops!"I reply, "OOOOHHHHHH, 50 lashes for you!""That's good!" he says.Puzzled, I asked, "Why is that good?""25 for one eye and 25 for the other!"Ugh, he's doomed to be his father.************************-*******************************-***R. is meticulously coloring her picture. She looks up at me and says, "Mommy, do you like how I'm coloring the bunny's bush?"Mr. Schmitty glances at me and I burst out laughing. I know, I know, sick, perverted minds think alike.T. asked, "What's so funny about the bunny's bush?""Yea, why are you laughing about the bunny's bush?" W. chimes in.I just roared until I couldn't breathe.
Good Thing Ladybugs Can't Drive
2008-05-02 01:43:00 I decided to start a project with the kids. I wanted something we could do together. I threw in some education as well, not that they realized it was edumacational! Score one for mom. Hee Hee.I ordered live bugs! Yup, that's right, live buggies. I went online and placed my order for one Praying Mantis egg, 5 Painted Lady Caterpillars, and about 15 Ladybugs. The UPS man came with our delivery about a week later. When I opened the package, I took inventory. Praying Mantis egg, check. Caterpillars, yup, check. But I couldn't find the Ladybugs. I searched the box for the cute polka dotted critters. All I had was a tube with some kind of bugs that looked like termites. TERMITES! ARE.THEY.FREAKING.NUTS?!I quickly looked for the informational booklets. WHEW! The bugs were not termites, THANK GOODNESS, but were indeed Ladybugs. Did you know that they like a Caterpillar, also go into a cocoon type of state and change? I.had.no.idea. Pretty cool.So we set up our little domes and meshed hous...
I'm Starting To Feel Like Charlie Brown
2008-04-24 20:53:00 We don't go on a lot of vacations. The last BIG vacation was two years ago, this September, when we went to Disneyworld.W. is on spring break this week. We decided to take the kids to the Philadelphia Zoo. I booked a room for two nights. The room wasn't cheap, but the hotel had a pool and as I said we don't go away a lot. So we sprang for the extra expense. Just being away for two nights was going to be worth it.We arrived Tuesday at around 5:00 pm and checked in. The kids were so excited! We went up to the 10th floor and had dinner at the hotel's grill. The food was okay, a little too "fancy" and very expensive. I say fancy because the mac and cheese was ziti noodles with the restaurants own cheese sauce.Mr. Schmitty has celiac sprue. He has to be careful what he eats and it's risky when you order out. We can tell them not to put bread on the plate and no croutons in the salad but sometimes there can still be issues. He ordered grilled chicken which was covered in spinach and ...
My Hard Work Paid Off
2008-04-16 15:47:00 My son's school had their annual PTA Installation Dinner and Chance Auction last Friday night. PHEW! It's finally O-V-E-R!I am on the committee that runs the auction. I am a complete lunatic every year as there is SO much work to be done for this event. It's our biggest fundraiser. I am in charge of designing and sending out about 500 invitations and response cards, the table seating cards, and various theme related items. I also solicit donations for the gift baskets. To top that all off, I was the chairperson this year for the Ad Journal. That meant soliciting for monetary donations from local businesses and having them place an ad in our program book. I also had to put the book together with the night's schedule, the gift basket list, various thank you notes, and the ads. It was sheer craziness.Yesterday I finished all of my thank yous to the generous contributors. I am officially done with this year's event! The night was a big success. We raised a lot of money and I totally...

Because regular snow solution was expensive, Williams started experimenting with several mixes to make snow. One of those ingredients is bubble bath, causing the snow to have a great smell. They use five liters of bubble bath snow mixture each night of the show. The 16-foot mega tree is the display that takes the longest to install. Woo Hoo!! Family Time!!
2007-11-09 18:10:00 The Ball was last night and it was ok... Truthfully, I wasn't impressed. Our command is the largest on base and last year they decided to split it between two nights so they could have it at The Club. There were complaints about that I guess and so they decided to rent out the community Civic Center for the ball. OK! Terrible, terrible, terrible idea!! I think my high school prom was better than the ball last night. I've seen the center done up nice so I guess I was expecting that last night too. There are so many things that could have been done to make the decor right for the night but instead we had multi-colored balloons as centerpieces for our white plastic tables with metal folding chairs. I did have fun with my husband though and it is always nice to get dressed up and go out on a special date! Also, I had a few girls come up and tell me I looked so elegant and asked if they could take a picture with me. That was a nice kind surprise, but it does seem the dresses are gettin...

Balancing Family Time During the Holidays
2007-11-08 00:00:00 There are few times of year more demanding than the holiday season. Presents to buy, relatives to visit, the house to decorate… plus everything else that you have to get done normally. One major stressor for many families ...

Jon Voight Grabs Some Family Time
2007-10-08 23:59:00 Even glaciers melt! Reports are coming in that The Most Beautiful Woman In The World, Angelina Jolie, might have reunited with her dad, actor Jon Voight. Keep in mind that these two have been estranged on and off for decades and he was so out of the loop that he couldn't pronounce Zahara's name correctly when he was talking to the press about how he never sees his daughter. Voight, 63, was seen leaving The Waldorf Astoria hotel on Sunday where Angelina, 32, and her family are also staying. Angelina and Brad Pitt were seen taking a helicopter ride all day today with Maddox and Shakira Zahara. Pax and Shiloh, the newest additions to the Jolie-Pitts... Ok, it's totally possible father and daughter have the same taste in hotels. Or Angie's staying there with her Benetton ad and Jon's meeting a high class call girl for some spelunking. But isn't nice to drop the cynicism and feel like the Voight-Jolie's can put their differences aside to come together for the sake of....well, n...

Family Time
2007-09-09 02:12:00 My great plan and determination to start de-cluttering this morning was replaced by a more important activity: family time. There's a scarcity of "quality family time" for a family whose parents both work full time outside the home. Weekends are more often designated to doing chores, catching up with home projects, and attending social events which really can't be truly classified as "quality family time" (ok, some may argue).A couple days ago, Hubby called me on the phone while he and my son G were at the Taekwondo Dojang. He announced that there's a Family Taekwondo this Saturday, and we should go. My response was less than enthusiastic and he was surprised. "I thought you wanted to do this?" he said. "Well, yeah, but I was thinking of de-cluttering this weekend". He wasn't pleased to hear that. He pointed out "It's only for an hour. How much de-cluttering can you do? besides, you'd always have clutter". So I told him I'd think bout it.When I woke up today, I stepped...

Tis' the season.....
2007-08-27 08:42:00 Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la....la la la la! It's the most wonderful time of the year..it's the hap--happiest season of all! Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry. Why? Because THERE'S NO CRYING IN FOOTBALL!!! That's right, people. In case you haven't noticed or have been unfortunately locked away in a cellar deprived of any means of communication with the outside world, football season is upon us. Am I a fan? Well, I don't bleed purple and gold, I don't have season tickets, I've never bought the all access season cable pass for the low, low price of $495 bowl games, halftime specials and overtimes not included. Your favorite team is probably subject to blackouts but pay anyway and you can watch The Tennesse Valley Inter City Squad scrimmage practices unless of course you live in Tennesee and wish to see that team because they will then have to be blacked out also...and I have actually mowed the yard on gam...

Family Time
2007-08-12 02:46:00 Today's article focuses on family and how to find time to spend with them.In our modern day lives, with work, sports, entertainment and other commitments, it is easy to overlook the quality time that we could be spending with out families.Quality time with your family helps to build and bind relationships; and whats more it can be free or very cheap, and you can do it almost anywhere. In fact just as I was writing this article my daughter came into the room and asked me to see the tower she had just built - writing this article I had to oblige!!!So today - been Sunday - I am not going to write to much; I just want to remind you how important your family is, that they are growing all the time, and to value every day. Some activities you could do with your family include:PlayingGoing to the parkGoing swimmingGoing out for dinnerGoing for a walkListening to musicRiding your bikesCookingEven cleaning the house (with a lot of people it can be quite fun!!!)You can make the activitie as...
Quality family time is a priceless gift
2007-08-10 16:24:00 School starts for my kids in a couple of weeks so I'm doing my best to enjoy the more than enough quality time I have with them during the summer months. Once school starts so does our very busy schedule of homework, sports, dance classes, and music lessons. Squeezing quality family time in is not easy so we have created "family traditions". These are traditions that our kids look forward to and will hopefully remember with fond memories when they are adults. Our first tradition was our commitment to our faith. We attend mass on Saturday nights as a family followed with going out to dinner and letting the kids take turns deciding what restaurant we should dine at. Church may not be their favorite thing to attend but they really look forward to dinner out. I hope we can keep them enjoying this tradition into their teenage years even if it means them bringing a friend.Another tradition is our Family Council which we have every month or so. We come together at the kitchen table and tak...

Survey shows technology is encroaching on family time
2007-04-11 21:55:00 Do you feel that computers and video games are having a negative impact on the amount of quality time family members spend with each other? Well it looks like you are not alone. A recent Australian survey now confirms that many parents believe they are spending less time interacting with their children these days due to the distractions of modern technology.I find it sort of sad really. Parents really enjoy hearing about how their child's day at school went.Down here our government is actually looking into scrapping school homework, because children are becoming overloaded with it. When I was at school (graduated in 1983), my homework was only an hour or two each day. But nowadays some children have 3 or 4 hours of homework each day (and that's for 9th graders). Teachers setting homework don't seem to be interacting with other teachers to ensure they do not pile too much on the poor kids. When I got home from school, the first thing I did (depending on the weather) was get changed...
