Fantasy Errata
2008-06-11 03:00:00 -- It was an interesting Tuesday in Fantasy Baseball. If you noticed that Keith Foulke (who gave up a run today), and Alan Embree, were suddenly snatched up in your league: it's because Huston Street is complaining of a sore groin. If you need saves, act accordingly. If you put a gun to my head, I'd pick up Foulke, but you're really flipping a coin here. -- I do love strikeout mongers. Through Monday, there were about fifteen pitchers with more strikeouts than hits allowed amongst those who've pitched a decent amount of innings. Only one of them, Jonathan Sanchez (75 Ks, 66 hits) might be a free agent in your league. Clearly, these are pitchers you want on your team.Topping the chart is the stupefyingly awesome Carlos Marmol, whose 18 hits allowed versus 60 Ks is the stuff that dreams are made of. Rounding out the rest: Brandon Webb (75 Ks and 71 hits), Tim Lincecum (83 Ks, 70 hits), Chad Billingsley (79 Ks, 60 hits, Edinson [sic] Volquez )96 Ks, 52 hits, Josh Beckett (80 Ks, 66...

2008-06-10 07:19:00 This is our 664th post. Hmm, we'll have to do something special for #666.-- Nick Swisher: I told you to pick him up, didn't I! Well, he ain't a free agent anywhere no more. -- Mike Jacobs goes deep. Frustrating player to own, but can't argue with the production.-- In my cash league teams I drafted Prince Fielder, Mike Jacobs, Adam LaRoche, Garrett Atkins, and Ryan Garko to man my CI and UTIL slots. My highest rated CI on Yahoo? Jorge Cantu, by a wide margin.-- The more I think about Jeremy Guthrie, the more I think he's likely the best pitcher available in more than 50 percent of mixed leagues. Ignore wins for a moment: he's been lights out the last month or so. Plus, his interleague record is awesome (sub 2.00 ERA, etc. etc.), and he has interleague games coming up.-- I don't care what Oliver Perez did last game, I am having 19.29 percent more fun now that I cut him in three leagues. You know what it feels like to own a player like Oliver Perez? It's kind of like being the ...

Monday fantasy wrap
2008-06-10 05:28:00 BY ADAM RONIS Have to start with one of my favorite players. Ken Griffey Jr. hit career home run No. 600. No doubt in my mind he likely would have had the all-time record had he not endured so many injuries. Brandon Phillips is quietly producing. He hit his 12th homer and has 35 RBIs. He's very consistent and hasn't had a major hot streak, so he goes unnoticed sometimes. Edinson Volquez continues to pitch around walks. He walked five, but was able to get a win. He is 9-2 with a 1.56 ERA. He allowed three earned runs in a start for the first time this season. He went six inning and allowed three hits and struck out five. His value might not get higher than this. Mark Reynolds is picking a good time to get hot again. With Conor Jackson back at first base, Chad Tracy will vie with Reynolds for playing time at third. Reynolds hit his third homer in two games and went 3-for-4 with two doubles. He has 14 homers and 40 RBIs with a .259 average. He has power and even has five steals. He s...

Fantasy Errata
2008-06-09 05:17:00 -- The second major problem with paying for saves (the first problem is that they can be had for free with if you monitor games regularly and have sound draft strategy), is that it's pretty tough to do it effectively. How would drafting J.J. Putz, Rafael Soriano, and Manny Corpas have worked out? Not so good. This is what I think of "paying for saves":If you're desperate, speculate on Taylor Buchhhhhhhh(this guy's name annoys me)holz, grab Putz's backup (I think he's hurt), and see if Mike Gonzalez and Zumaya were overlooked in your league. It's all about finding bubble closers and handcuffing them. No, not this.THIS.-- Nick Swisher has replaced Mike Jacobs in all leagues in which Swisher had been abandoned. I don't know why Jacobs missed the last few days, but frankly, I've had enough of his "can't stay healthy" bullshit. I'm still high on the guy, but I'm tired of waking up twice a week and discovering that for no apparent reason he's taking the day off.-- Aaron Harang ...

2008-06-08 04:51:00 -- Jeff Keppinger may be back in a week or two. I'd stash him away if I had a free DL slot. The shortstop position is just looking more and more grim as the weeks go by.-- Well, we're well into June, and it was about time for Joakim Soria to blow a save. I'd cut him immediately. Just kidding.-- Ty Wigginton really needs to be owned in more leagues.-- Same goes for Jeremy Guthrie, whose unfair win totals and ugly first few weeks mask about a month of dominance.-- A home run for Delmon Young! He's off the schneid! Victor Martinez remains the only position player likely drafted in every league without a homer.-- Russell Martin's stolen base and homer today put him on pace for, I don't know, a 12/10 season? Something like that, anyway. I'd use today's effort as a launching pad to sell high. -- Joe Crede has four home runs over the last two days. There's really nothing you can do with this fantasy-wise, as you can't expect it to continue, nor can you retroactively pick him up a...

2008-06-07 14:32:00 I enjoyed this week's roundtable discussion. It was hosted by Mike Muschiano of the Poughkeepsie Journal. Mike has also been hosting a Sunday Pick'em contest (which I was winning but have fallen into a close third) that I would recommend checking out to replicate the format. The question for this week? What are three things that aggravate you the most as a fantasy baseball manager? For those of you who are commissioners, or plan to be in future seasons, the discussion is a must-read. I find it funny how some of the responses contradict each other, and how these disagreements are spurring vocabulary such as "fantasy baseball purist". I think it's good for the game, and the knowledge of statistics is commendable and worth absorbing.

2008-06-07 05:27:00 -- I know what some of you are thinking: Oliver Perez on the road tomorrow at Petco is the best matchup you could ever hope for. Why not start him? Well, that's actually what I thought about Perez in San Francisco. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.-- After having a few 0-for-3s mixed in there and not having homered in about nine games, Carlos Quentin came alive with a three-run shot. Mini-slump is over. There were seven home runs at Cellular Field today (or whatever the name is now). I'm thinking the weather might be heating up out there. -- Rick Ankiel sounds like he's got a host of things going wrong with him physically. I'm not sure if you can still sell high, nor am I terribly sure that you want to buy low.-- Time to play detective. Sidney Ponson was cut by the Rangers yesterday, supposedly over a "clubhouse incident" that was "unprofessional" and "unbecoming a teammate." No further explanation is given. Now, Ponson isn't a Cy Young candidate, but beggars can't be ...

2008-06-06 04:54:00 -- A few days ago I mentioned that I was thinking of picking up John Lannan, if for no other reason than the fact he gets Ks. I pick him up, start him, he goes six innings without striking anyone out. Mother@$#%R@#%R-- Jair Jurrjens -- nice knowing ya. I thought he'd last to the break before falling apart. So much for that. Don't you love it when you start multiple hitters against a pitcher you have starting for you, assuming that even if the pitcher gets lit up, at least you'll capitalize? That didn't work out so well for me today with Mike Jacobs and Jorge Cantu. Next up on my increasingly hapless team: Manny Parra and Jeremy Guthrie. -- Jose Contreras: no signs of slowing down.-- Rafael Soriano picked up the save. I'd feel free to cut Acosta at this point.-- I posted a clip of the Boston v. Tampa Bay brawl. Here's a brawl that the pitcher anticipated, but didn't quite unfold the way one might expect. -- So, Homer Bailey ... not so good.-- C.C. Sabathia got lit up today. Yo...

The Mad, Mad, Racist Fantasy World of King George
2008-06-06 03:09:00 by Michael O’McCarthy Let us peek into The Mad, Mad, Racist Fantasy World of King George as he channels Ronald Reagan, John Wayne and Gary Cooper. As noted by Tom Dispatch, the noble virtual pamphleteer Tom Engelhardt in his June 2, 2008 chronicle wherein we see the latest revelation into the "self-will run riot," megalomaniac, mentally ill George W. Bush. A dry drunk – sometimes wet alcoholic, Bush continues to sit, gripping the arms of the chair behind the Presidential desk in the Oval Office looking at the button device that will launch a nuclear war. His is thinking only of victory. Victory and his legacy of democracy – driven into the land of the infidels by armed measure as is necessary. Sometimes he channels Charleston Heston, remaining armed in the face of enemies in the night, clenching those arm rest like dual handled fifty caliber machine guns until they tear his "cold dead hands" from their stocks. Sometimes he relives those moments wh...

Fantasy Err....*sigh*
2008-06-05 03:36:00 -- Well, after Oliver Perez's implosion, I tried Jorge Campillo (failure) and Daniel Cabrera (more failure). Tomorrow, John Lannan gets his shot at my No. 5 starter. If he creates a quadrifecta of disaster, I'm going to give Manny Parra a looksie. Yay me. -- I'm thinking Jose Reyes may not overtake Hanley Ramirez this year, after all. But, it's a long season.-- Every time I wonder why Aaron Cook is a free agent in all my leagues, I take a look at him and remember that he's striking out a batter every other inning ... on a good night. -- The White Sox, collectively, may be breaking out of their funk. Just about everyone other than Carlos Quentin may be a free agent in your league. Keep an eye on all of them. -- Looks like the DL stashing of Joel Zumaya and Mike Gonzalez may pay dividends this year. -- Carl Crawford played today. Whew. -- Carlos Pena, obviously taking the hex off Crawford, goes on the DL with a broken finger. Going to be tough to replace that kind of Mendoza line...

An interesting June 3rd for me in terms of fantasy baseball
2008-06-04 14:54:00 I checked my big-money team yesterday somewhat hastily. I saw that I had seven runs, four home runs, and eight RBIs, so it looked like a pretty good day offense-wise. Then I notice this morning that I had lost several points in batting average. What could have happened? My team went 6-for-49 yesterday for a robust batting average of .122. Now, four home runs in six hits is a nice ratio, but holy crap. I can't remember the last time I've seen a team have RBI and run totals that were each in excess of the total hits. Basically, it's the equivalent of being able to do a standing back flip, yet have this happen to you:

2008-06-04 05:05:00 -- So ... umm ... what's up with Carl Crawford? I hear "leg pain", I hear "nothing major", I hear "day off", then I also hear "Dr. James Andrews." AYIUAAYAYI. Crawford may be better in fantasy than in real-life, but fantasy baseball is what I'm playing. This sounds ominous.-- So much for Joba's heralded move to the starting rotation. An erstwhile competitor for many years has been preening a bit over the twentyish starts he'd be getting from Joba. Well, it's going to take a few to remove the stink from this one. If he has an excellent start next time out, I'd actually try to move him. The chances of him succeeding while being stretched out for the rest of the year are pretty slim.-- Why is Akinori Iwamura still a free agent, anywhere? He was batting about .200 with one home run at the end of April. Now he's around .280 with four home runs (still not too many stolen bases, but he's a second baseman).-- Nick Swisher, left for dead in many a league, went yard today in a 1-4 eff...

The most important fantasy baseball news ever
2008-06-03 19:50:00 In what seems like several hundred Oliver Perez implosions ago, I wrote about the legal hurdles facing baseball. It seems that MLB, after years of granting fairly affordable licenses to purveyors of fantasy products, finally decided to exert more control over the publicly available statistics generated by its players during games. A lawsuit, of course, commenced. Surprising the entire sports industry, MLB lost at the trial and appellate level.Well, MLB decided to appeal and were denied an "en banc" hearing (of all appellate justices) a few months ago. The only avenue left was the U.S. Supreme Court. This morning, the Supreme Court decided not to hear the case. Ding dong, the witch is dead. This is a disastrous ruling for every major professional sports franchise. We are talking tens of billions of dollars over the next few decades. Now, instead of being able to dictate terms, prices, and ultimately force us to accept fewer choices that cost more, professional sports has lost any sem...

Supreme Court allows fantasy leagues to play ball
2008-06-03 12:31:00 —Die-hard baseball fan Terry Haney got his wish Monday when the U.S. Supreme Court rebuffed Major League Baseball's argument that fantasy sports leagues be required to pay a license for the right to use player names and plug runs, hits and errors into their popular online games. As a youngster growing up in San Diego during the early 1960s, Haney freely incorporated baseball statistics gleaned from newspaper box scores into a rudimentary board game. Last year, Haney — now a 55-year-old retired hog trader in Iowa —parlayed his love for baseball's myriad metrics into a $100,000 prize in a national fantasy baseball league. MLB and its players union wanted to put the national pastime's treasure trove of game-related statistics under lock and key left Haney baffled: "I almost hoped that the justices would look at MLB and ask them 'Why . . . are you wasting our time?' "The Supreme Court did the next best thing, fantasy sports league operators said, by refusing to re...

Monday fantasy wrap
2008-06-03 06:55:00 BY ADAM RONIS So this is why Prince Fielder became a vegetarian? To steal bases. He stole third base, his first of the season. Oh yeah, he hit his ninth homer, too and went 3-for-4. Like I said, his power will come. Power hitters tend to hit them in bunches, so he could be set to take off after homering for the third time in four games. Anyone able to acquire him recently? Salomon Torres has establised himself as the closer for the Brewers. He picked up his sixth save and in his last six appearances, he has five saves and a win. Jay Bruce has lived up to all the hype so far. Yes, it's only a week, but his approach at the plate has been very impressive for a 21-year-old. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and his third homer. He is batting .577 in his first 26 major league at-bats. Someone performing even better is Chase Utley. Utley went 3-for-4 with his 21st homer. He has homered in five consecutive games and seven of his last eight. Pedro Feliz hit his eighth homer and has 30 RBIs. He...

Fantasy Errata: The Oliver Perez edition
2008-06-03 04:36:00 -- Today's Errata column is entirely devoted to how much I hate Oliver Perez. He's gone from mid round sleeper to the bane of my existence. Death to Ollie. You don't see a 21.0 MOTHERFUCKING WHIP VERY OFTEN!-- So I cut him in all three of my leagues ... he started for me in all of them ... and went perusing the waiver wire. Jorge Campillo is starting tomorrow. I'll try him. Between Oliver Perez and Jair Jurrjens (who I can't cut now, as he's basically my fourth starter) it's going to take a month erase the last three days. If Campillo goes down, I'll be scrounging for Jason Bergmann, who at least will be striking guys out.-- Jeff Francoeur now deserves to have me spell his name correctly, as he continues to heat up.-- San Diego has a pitcher named Carlos Guevara, who shows up as C. MLB Tried To Kill Your Fantasy Team
2008-06-02 23:00:00 Maybe not so much kill it as make money off of it. The supreme court turned down a case involving Major League Baseball and a Missouri company which will uphold the lower court’s ruling. The lower court said that sports companies do not need MLB’s approval to use player names and statistics. But lower courts said the websites had a First Amendment right to publish information about the players’ performances on the field, just as the media do. Fantasy baseball is huge. I’m really surprised that I hadn’t heard something about this case before. Had the MLB won fantasy leagues would have gone the way of sports video games. Only the biggest companies like ESPN and maybe Yahoo! would be able to pay the MLB whatever exorbitant fee they decided was necessary to use players’ names. Who the fuck wants to play in a fantasy league that has to use fake names for the players like Harry Honds? Original Story: Washington Post NOTE: The dick grab picture is totall...
Online dating is More fantasy than reality
2008-06-02 19:17:00 Online dating industry is increasingly grow on the Internet, I do personally believe that many people put too many "fantasy" in their online connections, and fail to use good common sense because of it.The biggest danger people face meeting in person someone they met online is unfulfilled, unrealistic expectations. We all burp, fart and sweat. While not see how someone chews their food and pronounces their words that can not be JST, that this is love, not fantasy. That meet your intentions do not always work, since select partners that are not compatible and they develop emotional connections, before meeting in person, one Australian university researcher has found.Women are more inclined to choose the wrong partner because they are attracted to humorous and witty comments, emails, according to psychologist Matthew Bambling from Queensland University of Technology."Just because they can write smart and witty comments, e-mail, does not mean they will be Mr. Right, that's for sure," s...

An honorable mention to Jay Bruce, who went 13-for-22 (.591) with 10 runs, two homers, six RBIs and two stolen bases in his first week in the majors. American League Offensive Player of the Week -- Manny Ramirez (Red Sox): He hit his 500th career home run and went 8-for-25 (.320) with six runs, three home runs and eight RBIs. National League Pitcher of the Week -- Kerry Wood (Cubs): Wood pitched five innings and had four saves. He struck out eight, allowed no earned runs and had a 0.80 WHIP. American League Pitcher of the Week -- Scott Kazmir (Rays): I know Mets fans, I feel your pain. Sunday fantasy roundup two
2008-06-02 07:44:00 BY ADAM RONIS Josh Hamilton hit his 15th homer and has 63 RBIs. He is batting .328 and I think he's legit. I wouldn't see high unless you get an offer you can't refuse. The Rangers have been hitting and the ball flies in their ballpark during the summer. Milton Bradley is off to an excellent start. He is hitting .322 and hit his ninth homer and had three RBIs for 34 on the season. Adrian Gonzalez is a case where you can't worry about a player's home ballpark. He hit his 16th homer and has 50 RBIs with a .290 average. Aaron Rowand has a nine-game hitting streak and hit his eighth homer and drove in run 35. He is hitting .340. Sell high. Randy Wolf had a good start going six innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk and struck out five in a no-decision. He's worth owning. Trevor Hoffman blew his third save of the season and took the loss to fall to 0-4. He allowed four hits, three runs and one walk in 1/3 of an inning and has a 5.68 ERA. Tim Lincecum left the game in line f...
