Pointing out, in some cases, the cost of fresh, locally supplied foods are less expensive ...

Maggie's Farm - A Follow-Up
2009-09-16 17:23:00 It isn't my purpose to go on arguing this point. Like every point I try to make on this blog, eventually you've stated every argument you have and you just have to conclude with, "I guess either you get it, or you don't." But quite a few readers have responded with dismay when I submitted my letter of resignation from the Fight for Technology Freedom in America. "The troops need you.", they say, or "Don't give up, we're winning!" Things along those lines. But I'm looking at the big picture. Let's just forget about what operating system people run for a minute. Let's look at some other fronts in the United States. For instance, Michael Moore is getting discouraged, too. And all he's doing is trying to point out fundamental flaws in US economy, politics, and culture. Flaws that the citizens of every other country tell us and tell us and tell us that we have, and nobody listens. This story at the Huff has Michael Moore saying such things as: "I've done this for 20 years....

Building A Bridge To Somewhere: Farm To School
2009-09-08 13:00:00 Cooking Up a Story: Stories This story is about a farmer that builds a bridge (metaphorically speaking) from his fields to the school lunchroom cafeterias. In the process, fresh, and wholesome foods are provided to growing kids, and a small local food economy develops. This is part of a growing trend across the country. Okay, if you?ve ...

Maggie's Farm
2009-09-01 21:24:00 As they say in Starcraft, "Upgrade complete!" I have finished (mostly!) the site re-design and overhaul. The only exception is a few straggler pages like the ones I posted Flash games on, but those are getting collated into the new 'Playground' section anyway. Also the portfolio is remaining as-is for now - it's intended to be different from the rest of the site anyway. There will be small tweaks for a few tiny issues, but generally this set-up works across platforms, conforms to standards better, and won't draw nearly as much flaming from the 4chan set. The last style was a hipster joke, my way of thumbing my nose at all things technology in one stroke. That was fun, but this style looks much more professional. That reflects the fact that online freelancing has become a full-fledged career for me, rather than just a profitable side hobby. But I mentioned - way back here - that with this new look comes a new attitude that I have. And what is that new attitude? Why, it's Maggi...

Minnesota Organic Farmer Uses Thermal Banking to Increase Farm Output, Sust
2009-08-07 13:00:00 Reporting from the field: These past few days we’ve been spending time in Oak Center, Minnesota (located about 25 miles north of Rochester), with a really great organic farmer, Steven Schwen, of Earthen Path Organic Farm. Challenged by the cold Midwest winters, Steven pondered how to warm up his planting beds. What evolved was a ...
Wood Street Urban Farm in Englewood
2009-08-06 20:27:00 The Wood Street Urban Farm is a USDA Certified organic production farm in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. It was started in 1992 by Les Brown, Director of Policy for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, who passed away in 2005, as a training program for the homeless and jobless. Today, the Wood Street Urban Farm employs 30 part-time workers, including ex-offenders, and provides job training while helping to alleviate the food desert problem in the area. They estimated they'd grow about 10,000 lbs of produce this year on just 2/3 of an acre. You can see a photo gallery at the Sun-Times website and a segment from CLTV below that profiles the urban farm. What are they growing in Chicago...
Down On The Farm
2009-07-27 19:26:00 Those of you who've known me for a while know all too well that I'm not all that interested in the farm system. It seems too often it's name after forgettable name, 99 percent of whom we'll never hear from again. And every season there's some minor-leaguer who's should be called up to fix all our problems (see, e.g. Veal, Donnie; Gallagher, Sean; Cedeno, Ronny; Pie, Felix, etc.), almost all of whom fizzle out and incur my wrath before they're sent packing back to Iowa. Lo, over the years, my attitude has become "call me when they make the club and I"ll start caring." Luckily for those of you who yearn for news from the minors, BP's Kevin Goldstein...

Billings Farm and Museum Starts Its Summer Season
2009-05-01 23:16:00 Billings Farm and Museum is now openTwo of my favorite places in Vermont are the village of Woodstock VT and the Billings Farm and Museum located there. Billings summer season of events gets underway this Sunday, May 3, with the 23rd annual Plowing Match. This contest pits teams of oxen and draft horses against each other. Each team and its handler is judged on how well they perform together. The doors open at 9:00 a.m. and competition begins at 10:30 a.m. starting with the walking plow contest and continues into the afternoon with the team sulky competition. Special activities will include horse-drawn wagon rides, visitor plowing with the Billings team, ox programs, and rope making demonstrations.Woodstock is located about 15 minutes west of White River Junction. Take Exit 1 from Interstate 89 and drive west on Route 4. Zoom in on the Google map from the link here and you will see Billings Farm clearly marked. There is much to see and do in Woodstock including great inns, restau...
Down On The Farm
2009-04-25 01:12:00 I wanted to take some time today to discuss some of the things that have been going on in the Giants' minor league system in our monthly minor league report. The organizational spotlight has been on the Giants high-A affiliate, the San Jose Giants. On that roster, the Giants currently have a plethora of former high round picks, including the teams top 4 prospects; Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Angel Villalona and Tim Alderson. As a matter of fact, of the Giants top-10 prospects, according to baseball America, 7 of them are playing in San Jose. Because of all the talent, it's shouldn't be a surprise to any that the San Jose Giants currently have the 2nd best record in the California League.Leading the team in hitting is the #5 overall pick from last June's amateur draft, as Buster Posey sits at .389 with 3 home runs and 12 RBI. The teams #2 rated offensive prospect, Angel Villalona, is also turning some heads with the way he's swinging the bat. The 18 year-old first basemen is...

detroit to be turned into a farm
2009-04-13 11:59:00 With Detroit fast becoming an urban wasteland, some enterprising businessman has a plan to turn part of the landscape into a farm.According to the press release"Detroit could be the nation's leading example of urban farming and become a destination for fresh, local and natural foods and become a major part of the green movement," said Hantz, a Detroit resident. "Hantz Farms will transform this area into a viable, beautiful and sustainable area that will serve the community, increase the tax base, create jobs and greatly improve the quality of life in an area that has experienced a severe decline in population." Phase 1 plans utilize more than 70 acres of underutilized vacant lands and abandoned properties on Detroit's lower east side. Hantz Farms plans to grow natural, local, fresh and safe fruits and vegetables to help meet Michigan's increasing demand for locally grown produce. In addition to food and trees, Hantz Farms will harvest wind energy and utilize geothermal heat and...

Obama Thwarts MacDonald - Spotted Owl Won't "Buy The Farm"
2009-04-01 23:04:00 (Get it, MacDonald?s Farm?heh, and I also posted stuff here that may or may not be of interest, though the new ?Hit And Run? ad is pretty good.)This tells us that the Department of the Interior of the Obama Administration?...has told a federal court that it will not defend the Bush administration's decision to cut back protections for the northern spotted owl.The action could affect logging in western Oregon.?Interior Department lawyers said in the motion that the decision was based on an inspector general's report finding there was political interference in owl protections by a former deputy assistant interior secretary. And who exactly would that former deputy assistant interior secretary be? Why, it would be Julie MacDonald. As noted here?...MacDonald used her political power to rig countless life or death decisions for imperiled American wildlife under the Endangered Species Act. Species like the Preble's meadow jumping mouse, California red-legged frog, and the Canada lynx ar...

2009-03-12 17:09:00 This afternoon I read Animal Farm.I had read it as a child, but didn't really understand the hidden meanings, so when I won an award where it was offered as one of the bribes prizes, I chose it.I got it because I had left the most comments on the new blog, Britcit, which is written by someone whose writing and politics I have long enjoyed online. It is a blog about UK citizenship in the 21st century and covers a lot of issues, many focussed on areas of civil liberties, ID cards, privacy issues etc. There will be regular community bribes, so I recommend you get over there now and start reading and commenting. And not just because of the goodies, but because it's great, too.

2009-02-21 22:38:00 Global food prices have surged 75 percent since the year 2000 because of the over-foresting, over-cultivating, and global warming affecting soil conditions in farming regions throughout the world. It's very promising then that there are forward looking architects like Eric Vergne whose entry in Evolo's 2009 Skyscraper Competition is something to be seriously considered -- so seriously, that Evolo has awarded his "Dystopian Farm," third place in the competition.

Farm By Nature - Shiraz Chocolate Barrels
2008-12-16 10:16:00 Editorial ContestI was approached via email to enter an editorial contest by Cocoa Farm. In agreeing to join in the fun they sent me a small sample of their product. I have missed the deadline for when the post was supposed to be done by so I would say that means no prize for me, but I have decided to do my post anyway. What can I say. It is not what I expected and the chocolate in it is unfortunately not what I expect. I like the flavour of the Shiraz but the quality of the chocolate really lets the product down. I like the good stuff, creamy, smooth and just sexy to eat really. If I needed a normal chocoholic fix in the middle of the night and this is what I had in the fridge it would satisfy. I suppose I was expecting a little more from what seems to be packaged as a gourmet and luxurious product. Suggestions for this product. I would like to see a better quality chocolate for the price. I personally would like to see the chocolate have a syrupy soft centre of a Shiraz in a sort ...

Places to farm for items for Auction House (WoW Wiki)
2008-11-05 20:31:00 Farming for reagents can be a time consuming affair, and many find it more cost efficient to just buy them off the Auction House. But as profit margins for blacksmiths are already meager at best, some still like to farm for these hard-to-get components. Be aware that many of the mobs suggested are also quest objectives, and are at peak hours hard to get at. All of these are also in contested zones, so keep an eye out for gankers if you are on a PvP server. Remember that an alchemist buddy with transmuting skills can be of great aid when you are looking for essences of different kinds.Click Here for Rest!!!
