Gaza:Farming under fire
2009-07-21 09:59:00

from farming to foraging
2009-04-27 15:49:00
With consumers increasingly looking for new ways to save and the growth of vegetable gardens and the like, it appears people want to source food on their own.Beyond growing is the world of foraging; where people go out into open spaces and harvest food that's already there. This can be hunting for mushrooms and wild herbs in woods and forests or picking up shellfish and seaweed on the sea shore. This whole aspect of food sourcing is really interesting because it was a topic widely ignored by people who differed responsibility to grocery retailers and food manufacturers. Whether it's growing your own herbs or the extreme of harvesting shellfish on the beach, at any level it's going to result in a more knowledgeable and informed consumer. Once someone has experienced growing and finding their own food, they have a changed perspective on the food they buy. On one level they begin to understand concepts around financial margin and economies of scale and also the complexity and footpr...

Worm Farming
2009-02-23 13:07:00
Yep, I said it. Worm Farming. I've been reading various gardening books from the local library in preparation for spring. This spring Dan and I are getting a community garden plot. A 25' x 30' patch of land where we can grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers May through October. I've always wanted to compost, but its tough when you live in an apartment. Vermicompost (or worm farming) seems to be the ideal solution. We'll start with a half pound of red worms (a.k.a. Red Wrigglers or Eisenia foetida) in an aerated bin. I'm using a 10 gallon rubber made tub with a bunch of 1/8" holes drilled into it (mostly on the top and bottom). I've lined the bottom with moist cardboard, shredded newspaper, and some old soil. I'll be keeping old food scraps (veggies, fruits, coffee grounds, tea bags, rinsed egg shells... NOT meat or dairy because those attract rodents and pests) in a used coffee can under the sink. Once a week or so I'll feed the scraps to the worms and make sure to k...

China Dairy Farming The American Way
2008-11-01 15:10:00
Interesting post at MSNBC World Blog, on an American-style dairy farm in China. The post is entitled, "Dairy Farming American-Style in China," and it does a nice job setting out how to operate a business in China that produces quality product. Not as in depth as I would have liked, but certainly well worth the read.

Farming 101
2008-05-22 17:48:00
Alternate title for this post = City Girl's Guide to Life on the Farm!Sometimes I feel so stupid. After nearly two years of being married to a farmer, I am only now learning some of the lingo used around here. Remember the time I thought that "a cow dropped" meant that she had cardiac arrest and just collapsed in the field and died? Hubby had to tell me that it meant that the cow gave birth to a calf. Sheeesh! There are some expressions that just aren't natural or don't make sense to city folk like me.I'm pleased to say that I have learned what "seeding" means. It does not mean when a man goes around and "spreads his seed". I've learned that "first cut" and "second cut" aren't expressions used only in the movie/film business. I've learned that "baling" is an agricultural term used when a farmer "bales" hay (or whatever else is in his crop). I've also learned that "wrapping" refers to wrapping bales with plastic and not wrapping presents for your wife! ;)I know what baler twi...

Can poor people benefit from ornamental fish farming in West Africa?s rainf
2008-05-13 20:59:00

Urban Farming in New York

On a lighter note, and in keeping with Denise’s comment, here’s another article from the NY Times.
