I love my father, and the older I get, the more like him I become. It would be no surprise to most men of my age to hear that this thought used to just plain piss me off. Time moves on however, and the influence of our genetics is, at some level at least; inescapable. I was just starting to feel bitter. Bitter that it was MY body that had to go through all kinds of crazy transformations to make this small person; bitter that it was my most tender parts that had to actually produce the little guy and then slowly SLOWLY recover from that; bitter that it was MY body that still felt twisted and torn from trying so hard to feed the little dickens, only to learn that I wasn't doing a good job... It is very, very cold today.  Even though I've already turned up the thermostat high enough to seriously bring into question both my commitment to the environment and to reducing our electricity bill.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to my husband's return from work, in the hopes that he'll be able to stem the tide of toddler energy racketing around the house at present.  Yesterday, he spent quite a while horsing around with the boys, and as I watched them play, I couldn't help but notice the little lessons that are embedded in the fun.  Things like winning and losing gracefully, not giving up when things get tough, and working together as a team.  They were subtle, but they were there, and it gave me a nice moment to reflect on all of the little gifts that fathers give their children. I've just begun shooting a new documentary with Debby Takikawa, with whom I made What Babies Want, the award-winning feature documentary about birth and babies.We're making a follow-up, about fathers and fatherhood, tentatively entitled "A Call to Fatherhood." We started shooting last week, and, I would suspect we'll be shooting into the Spring.I'm the Producer/Director of Photography/Editor of the project.
