'Stellar' stocks: China favorites
2009-09-15 06:00:00 "We see tremendous opportunities in China, which should rise regardless of US market gyrations," says Richard Schmidt. In Stellar Stock Alert he looks at a trio of ideas."China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) is one of our newest holdings. We bought the Chinese telecom company last month. Recent price action has turned the 200-day average positive. "In our view, we’re early in this up move and expect greater growth in the near future. CHL is a strong buy. "Netease.com (NASDAQ: NTES) is another one of our new holdings, purchased just one month ago. Between 2006 and 2009, the stock traded within a fairly wide trading range ($14-$26). That trading range provides significant support for future growth."And, earlier this year, the stock broke out of that trading range to the upside. It’s now continuing a very long-term uptrend that goes back to 2002. "In August, the stock ran up strong, then pulled back to the 50-day moving average. Th...

Dow Theory's mid-year favorites
2009-06-25 14:00:00 "Midyear is as good a time as any to pause and reflect," says Richard Moroney in Dow Theory Forecasts -- a newsletter that has been published for over 50 years. Here, he reviews the state of the market and offers a look at trio of favorite stocks which he considers "fundamentally superior" companies: Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB), Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA), and Oceaneering International (NYSE: OII)."The Dow Theory indicator remains in the bearish camp, as the last confirmed signal was the move to new lows in March."But both the Industrials and Transports have staged significant rallies since March, so the pathway to a bull-market signal has been established."If at least one average can hold above a March low on a signifi cant market correction and then both averages rebound above the closing highs established in the current rally, the Dow Theory will return to the bullish camp."While the average U.S. ...

Four favorites from China expert
2009-06-12 06:00:00 "The Chinese Dragon strikes again," says small cap expert Jim Oberweis, Jr., adding, "So far in 2009, the MSCI China Index is up 30% and our Oberweis China Opportunities Fund (OBCHX) has gained 62%."In his The Oberweis Report, he says, "China will be a great place to invest over the medium-to-long term, even if unpredictable in the short term." Here, he reveals four stocks that he considers "some of the most interesting Chinese ADRs to buy now.""E-House (NYSE: EJ) is the largest Chinese property agent. It is the Chinese version of Century 21. However, the firm faces very different housing market dynamics in China. "Chinese consumers tend to borrow considerably less than Americans or Europeans to finance home purchases, with down payments averaging about 40%. As a result of this lower leverage, China faces a less severe drop in property prices. "Further, in 2007, the government tried to curb the rapid rise in real estate pri...

Leeb: Look east for energy favorites
2009-05-13 06:00:00 "Amidst all the concern about the U.S. economy, investors may gain some solace, as well as profits, by looking east—to China, where there are signs the huge government stimulus is bearing fruit," says Stephen Leeb.In The Complete Investor, he adds, "For income investors, it makes good sense to own carefully selected dividend-generating Chinese securities such as PetroChina (NYSE: PTR) and China National Offshore Oil Corp. (NYSE: CEO).""Stepped-up growth in China will boost overall demand for energy and other natural resources, with Chinese energy companies among the strongest beneficiaries. "Petro-China’s reserve base makes the company perhaps the dominant energy company not just in China but worldwide. "At year-end 2008, the company had 11.2 billion barrels of crude oil reserves and 61.2 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves."Its refining, transporting, and marketing business is China’s biggest, and it...

On the Silk Road: Favorites from China expert
2009-04-24 06:00:00 "China has been my top market recommendation since late in 2008, and it remains so today," says global investing expert Yiannis Mostrous. In The Silk Road Investor he explains, "If the country’s stimulus package works (especially on the infrastructure front) expect the Chinese economy to have a V-shaped recovery this year." Here's a look at two of his favorites -- China Life Insurance (NYSE: LFC) and Chunghwa Telecom (NYSE: CHT)."The sustainability of such a recovery will depend on the status of the global economy, though. If the global economy and the credit/banking crisis don’t improve by this time next year, the Chinese economy will have more serious problems to deal with."For now, though, China seems to be headed for GDP growth of around 8% this year, which is nothing to fret about in the current economic environment."China Life Insurance reported a 45% decline in net profit, but earnings still beat estimates. The company pe...
ABC Renews 6 Favorites (and a lot of Reality TV)
2009-04-23 22:04:00 Taking much of the excitement and suspense out of next month’s annual Upfront, ABC announced today that they are picking up 12 of their current shows for next season. Which means actors on UGLY BETTY, GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, BROTHERS & SISTERS and LOST can relax and breath a big sigh of relief (Yes, we’re talking to you @michaelurie) Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the likes of veteran stars such as Nathan Fillion, Christina Applegate, Bob Saget, Bobby Cannivale, Megan Mullally and Harold Perrineau — all of whom will have to wait until ABC’s May 19th presentation in New York City to discover the official fate of SCRUBS, BETTER OFF TED, SAMANTHA WHO, IN THE MOTHERHOOD, THE UNUSUALS, CASTLE, SURVIVING SUBURBIA and CUPID. That is, unless they want to sign on the dotted line to be the next star on DANCING WITH THE STARS, THE BACHELOR or SUPERNANNY, all of which got expected pick ups for yet another season of...

Small cap expert eyes China favorites
2009-03-18 05:00:00 "Bull markets are born in the pits of despair; from current low stock prices and low PE valuations, the gains over the coming 5 to 10 years could be truly spectacular," says Tom Bishop (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2975).In- his BI Research (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2975), the small cap growth expert looks at two stocks that are based in China and set to benefit from China's stimulus program: energy efficiency play, SmartHeat (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=heat) (NASDAQ: HEAT (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=heat)) and medical diagnostics firm, Mindray (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=mr)(NYSE: MR (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=mr))."We have a number of stocks in our portfolio that are doing well, fundamentally, even if their stock prices aren’t. Therefore I am focusing on those as most attractive for purchase, if you have the brass and the cash."The profitability...

2009-03-13 05:04:00 A few of you have left comments wondering how I find the time to bake, work, blog with my parents here for a month. Beside needing only a few hours of sleep, I have great friends willing to jump in here for a visit with you. I feel blessed to be able to count today's guest as one of my closest friends. We email each other anywhere between 5 to 15 times a day. She sends me pictures of her lovely boy and I of my crazy puppy (weird trade I know). I laugh out loud when one of us says "I made this today" and the other writes "get out! I just did that too!!" We can talk at length about our trade and not feel like complete pedantic geeks. She is been one of pillars of humor and stress relief (with Jen and Lisa) when I start freaking out about the book and everything around it. If we were neighbors, the key would be under the mat for her to come in anytime she wants. Scratch that...The door would be wide open, the coffee press and madeleines ready to go. Turnaround favorites in oilfield services
2009-03-12 05:00:00 "Many experts believe that oil prices are at unsustainably low prices now, and they expect a sharp rise in the commodity price as supply and demand come back into line again," says turnaround expert George Putnam (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2904 ).In The Turnaround Letter (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2904 ), he suggests, "If oil does begin to rise again, the oilfield service stocks could rebound sharply." Here, he takes a look at large cap plays plays on a rebound within the oilfield services sector."We all know that oil prices have fallen dramatically from their highs in the summer of 2008. But different types of oil-related stocks have reacted quite differently to the price change in the underlying commodity."For example, while oil itself has dropped nearly 70% from its 12-month high, the stock of the largest integrated oil company, Exxon-Mobil, is down only 26%, less than the stock market as a whole."At the same time, the largest ...
Health care favorites for long-term growth
2009-03-02 06:00:00 "Long-time health-care investors can be forgiven their confusion; drug stocks are supposed to be defensive, but many of the largest drugmakers have been pounded," observes Richard Moroney (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2883).Nev-ertheless, in the blue chip Dow Theory Forecasts (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2883), the advisor sees two favorite health care issues as long-term opportunities: AstraZeneca (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=azn) (NYSE: AZN (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=azn)) and Johnson & Johnson (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=jnj) (NYSE: JNJ (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=jnj)). Here's his review."Health-care companies’ profits are supposed to remain fairly steady regardless of the economic situation. But hospitals’ capital spending fell in the December quarter, and many consumers are putting off medical care because they cannot afford it. "In addition...

Stimulus gains: Four favorites in infrastructure
2009-01-23 06:00:00 "Infrastructure stocks have been laid low by the economic downturn; but once massive government stimulus programs get going, these stocks should be among the surest winners," says Stephen Leeb (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2751).In- The Complete Investor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2751), he explains, "We've found four top infrastructure ideas, now at bargain-basement levels, that we think will surge. All are all astonishingly cheap when you consider how vital their role is in worldwide economic growth.""It would be difficult to find a group of stocks more leveraged to economic growth yet whose valuations imply there will be no growth."If you have any faith in the world’s future, these stocks are for you, and we think they will be dramatic outperformers as stimulus spending starts to kick in."Most diverse among the four is Jacobs Engineering (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=jec) (NYSE: JEC (http://www.thestockadv...

His contrarian stock picking means that he’s drawn to the unloved and tends to avoid the overly hugged."True, being contrarian comes with risks: he has had periods where he has trailed the market inside a 12- to 16-month time frame, but never a period of longer duration. The net result is that for investors with a longer-term time frame, Danoff is a hard man to beat."The good...

2008-12-18 06:00:00 In 2-for-1 (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2665), editor Neil Macneale (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/null) builds a portfolio comprised solely of stocks that have recently announced 2-for 1 stock splits. Here, he looks at two favored positions for new investment."There were no splits in November. However, I recommend you consider buying one or more of the cheap stocks already in the portfolio. "Weatherford (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=wft) (NYSE: WFT (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=wft)) is the stock I’m buying for the 2-for-1 portfolio this month. It too is selling at a P/E of 5 or less, and a price-to-book of less than 1."It is understandable this company should be down along with the rest of the market but, in my opinion when a stock gets this cheap, it is clearly an overreaction."Weatherford is a very solid oilfield service company doing business worldwide. 2008-11-24 02:44:00 #50 -- "Ball Four" by Jim BoutonNot long ago I saw a little bit on "Do you own multiple copies of any books?" I don't think I do -- the only one I can think of, ever, was owning two copies of "The Shining" because I found one with a 1970s reflective cover. But I have owned multiple copies at different times, including one that the linked post mentions -- "Ball Four."I don't think of "Ball Four" when I think of all-time favorites -- I'm not sure why. It deserves a place. I've read it more than "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," almost as much as "Salem's Lot." Bouton's book, perhaps more than anything else, enhanced my enjoyment of baseball. I read it again over the weekend, probably the first time since college -- my earlier copy started shedding pages at some point and was last seen residing forlornly in my parents' basement. Just a fantastic book. There aren't many athletes as observant and analytical as Bouton -- only Ken Dryden comes to mind -- and Bouton has the added...
MLPs: A trio of high yield favorites
2008-11-19 06:00:00 "Commodity stocks may not look like safe havens right now but one sector that that you should consider is master limited partnerships (MLPs) that hold pipeline assets throughout the United States," explains Glenn Rogers (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2577).The- contributing editor to Gordon Pape's Internet Wealth Builder (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2577) looks at three favorite pipeline operations, each offering a high yield and capital appreciation potential. Oberweis: Small cap favorites
2008-11-18 06:00:00 "Despite a very tough environment, buying shares in good companies which are performing well should bear fruit over time," says Jim Oberweis, Jr. (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2578) In The Oberweis Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2578), he adds, "We’ve put together a list of our top ideas that have already reported earnings this quarter and whose earnings and outlook remain robust." Here's a look at his favorites in healthcare, defense, and technology."As the last three months have so clearly demonstrated, cheap markets can become cheaper, and in certain rare instances, much cheaper."However, in our experience, those who buy when 'fear' is the driver are likely to profit when a normal tolerance for risk returns to equity markets and P/E’s begin to expand. "To be quantitative, those who buy when P/E’s are far below average, are, on average, afforded higher returns than the broader market over longer peri...

Energy favorites: Set for a rebound?
2008-10-23 06:00:00 "In recoveries from panic selloffs in the past, the energy patch has tended to outperform the S&P 500," notes energy sector specialist Elliott Gue (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2488).In- his The Energy Strategist (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2488), the advisor offers his outlook for the sector as well as a package of five favorite energy-related stocks, including ideas in the drilling, infrastructure. oil services and exploration areas."This has undoubtedly been the most challenging and unsettled market in recent history for the stock, bond, currency and credit markets. Not surprisingly, the energy sector hasn’t been immune to the selling pressure."However, I would note that the selloff in most energy stocks I cover has little or nothing to do with fundamentals and everything to do with market sentiment and a pervasive sense of panic."Institutions are dumping stocks to raise cash and the primary fear infecting the energy markets is...

It’s a food retailer with a specialty meat franchise. In Brazil, like most emerging markets, we’re seeing rather healthy gains in per capita calorie intake. "People are just eating more meat than t...

Upside's mid-year favorites: 'Perfect stocks?'
2008-07-22 07:00:00 "Our Quadrix rating system grades stocks on nearly 100 variables in six categories — Momentum, Value, Quality, Financial Strength, Earnings Estimates, and Performance," says Richard Moroney (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2198).In- his Upside Stocks (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2198), he says, "Everything we do is designed to find the 'perfect stock,' with a solid track record, bright growth prospects, strong finances, and a discount valuation." Here, he offers some mid-year favorites."Quadrix is our first screen, but we always take a closer look to see if stocks are being scored accurately. Because all rating systems tend to be backward-looking, we also consider company and industry prospects to determine if the bullish story being told by Quadrix is ancient history."Because of strength in energy and infrastructure end markets, EMCOR (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=eme) (NYSE: EME (http://www.thestockadvisors...-.
'Rust-belt' favorites: American resurgence
2008-07-07 05:00:00 "Even with the poor outlook for the economy, there are many investment opportunities being created by high energy prices and the low dollar," notes Jim Powell (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2164). Sydney Pollack Passes Of Cancer at 73; Actor / Director One Of My Favorites
2008-05-27 07:43:00 I just saw the fourth Indiana Jones movie and in it is a line I will not forget. "We've reached that point where life takes things away from us, where life gave to us." I think Jim Brodbent said it, but it was unforgettably true. One of those "things" is the person Sydney Pollack, who was one of my favorite actor / directors, But I remember Pollack most as an actor, and my first introduction to him was in the Woody Allen movie "Husbands and Wives" where he played a producer who was having marriage problems such that he separated and took up an unhappy, brief, and turbulent relationship with his personal trainer. What got me about Sydney's performance was the power of his personality shining through. A kind of approach that I associated with New York City's style and that shown through all of his movies from Husbands to "Eyes Wide Shut." I did not know this was the same person who directed "Out Of Africa" nor did I know that I would have the pleasure of watching movies ...

'Catch up' time for gold favorites
2008-05-23 07:00:00 "The signs look very bullish for gold," says Eric Roseman (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2039) in Commodity Trend Alert (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2039). Here's a look at two of his favorites -- New Gold (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ngd) (ASE: NGD (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ngd)) and Aurizon MInes (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=azk) (ASE: AZK (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=azk)). "At some point, I think the large and intermediate mining companies that we own will double, triple and possibly, quadruple. Sound too bullish? Not at all. These companies have some serious catching-up to do."Among the latest additions to our Gold Bugs Portfolio is New Gold, which is s probably one of the best mining speculations at this price. The big man behind this company is Canada's Seymour Schulich, who formed Franco-Nevada a few years back and subsequently sold it to Newmont M...
