2012 Economic Scorecard: The Case for Hope, Despair, and Utter Confusion ?
2012-01-04 14:56:00 Abroad: There is a sense among some economists that 2012 is going to live up to its Mayan reputation. Europe is set to collapse. China’s deterioration will turn critical. Indian inflation will rise, and its exports will slow, since so many of them go to China and Europe, in the first place. But what if ...

Fears That Didn't Materialise
2009-09-07 11:01:00 It is nearly a year since the dramatic collapse of Lehman Brothers. At one time last year, the financial and economic system looked to be entering into meltdown with quite a few cataclysmic predictionsThe worst fears haven't materialised. That doesn't mean things are good. We are still looking at the worst recession since the 1930s and one of the highest levels of unemployment in the post war period. Combined with record levels of public debt it makes for a difficult few years. But, I guess its something that it could have been a lot worse.Banking Collapse. After Lehman's unexpected demise, and banks not lending to each other. It looked like a frozen credit market could cause many banks to fall like Domino's. It raised the spectre of the 1930s when 100s of US banks went bankrupt contributing to the Great Depression. The global banking bailouts may have been badly managed - with the tax payer getting a raw deal; it was also rather sickening to see incompetent rich Wall Street Banke...

Dispelling Node Access Fears
2009-07-19 23:29:00 Venturing into the node access realm of hooks and functionality for some reason always felt complex, so I have avoided it complete thus far, relying on various node or taxonomy access based modules (http://drupal.org/taxonomy/ter-m/74), to handle any access issues I needed. This usually resulted in systems that were more complex or more burdensome to maintain than desired. Well, I was wrong, the node access system isn't complex, and it is powerfully efficient and optimized. Recently, I needed to implement a system to allow editing access to a node (an organization node) by multiple users, but we wanted the original node author to dole out this access instead of sending requests to the administrators. But beyond that we needed them to be able to edit all the 'product' nodes that referenced the 'organization' node. A couple modules were close to what I needed (http://drupal.org/project/node-access_autoreference, http://drupal.org/project/nodea-ccess_userreference, http://drupal.or...

Bible moved to library top shelf over inequality fears
2009-02-19 16:30:00 Lucy Cockcroft in The Telegraph writes,'Officials have issued guidance that libraries should keep all holy books, including the Bible, on the top shelves Muslims have complained that the Koran is often displayed on the lower shelves, which is deemed offensive as many believe the holy book should be placed above "commonplace things". Now library officials in one city have been told to keep all holy books, including the Bible, on the top shelves in the interests of equality. It has caused concern from Christian charities that this will put the Bible out of the reach and sight of many people. The situation was brought to light in guidance published by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, a quango answering to Culture Secretary Andy Burnham, on how to handle controversial materials. It said some Muslims in Leicester had moved copies of the Koran to the top shelves of libraries, because they believe it is an insult to display it in a low position. The city's librarians consulte...

our greatest fears guarding our greatest treasures
2008-11-24 21:00:00 Our greatest fears arelike dragonsguarding our greatest treasures. - Rumi1.The great mystic, poet, theologian, scholar and above all a great lover of God, Rumi is never short of eloquence. Sometime his words open the doors of heart to illuminate and help us see the reality with a newer vision, sometime his words drown us with an unknown nostalgia and other times it's purely distilled wisdom for life. The above statement by Rumi where he speak the language of a psychoanalytic and nails to the point. Even without being an expert in psychology or in psychoanalysis one can still feel the pregnancy of meaning hidden in this aphorism of Rumi from the perspective of our depth psyche.2.According to psychologists, Fear is an unwanted, unpleasant feeling of anticipated or perceived risk or danger, whether it be real or unreal. Fear also can be described as a feeling of extreme dislike towards certain conditions, objects or situations such as: fear of darkness, fear of ghosts, etc.Inter...

Accomplished Women Have Fears Too: What Do They Do About It?
2008-10-15 16:36:00 Book review: On Becoming Fearless: Love, Work, and Life by Arianna Huffington, founder of HuffingtonPost.comMany of us have had our fill of traditional self help books. Sure they are helpful but after a while they all seem the same. Arianna's book, Fearless, sounds like a self help book but it breaks the mold. This book is calming and invigorating at the same time. She fills the pages with examples of women pushing through their fears whether they are fictional characters, historical heroes, or modern day leaders. She flawlessly blends anecdotal stories that struck to the core of my psyche. So why pick up a book on fearlessness? One reason fear holds us back is our failure to recognize we have fear. Fear implies weakness. No one wants to be perceived as weak so we distract ourselves by exploring our psychology, read self improvement books, and make ourselves better in every way except one. We ignore the elephant in the room – fear.Arianna writes: "To live in fear is the worst form...

China banks tank on fears of US mortgage lender fallout
2008-07-15 18:43:00 From ReutersHONG KONG, July 15 (Reuters) - Shares in top Chinese lenders tanked on Tuesday, with the nation's biggest bank ICBC (1398.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) falling over 5 percent, as investors fretted over their likely exposure to the beleaguered U.S mortgage lenders.Shares in ICBC and Bank of China (3988.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) fell the most in a month after other banks in the region were seen to be invested in troubled Fredie Mac (FRE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Fannie Mae FNMN>. Other Asian financial stocks also headed south on Tuesday. But analysts said Chinese banks were only invested in the safer option of agency bonds issued by the U.S. mortgage lenders and did not have any equity exposure."Shame on institutional investors who can not differentiate between bonds and equity. It is really unjustified to say that Chinese banks will be badly impacted by this latest crises. This is nothing like the subprime mortgage crisis," said Samuel Chen, an analyst with JP ...

Some fears you can deal with readily. Like termites.
2008-06-06 22:25:00 We've been doing some home repairs lately -- some the result of accidents like the flooding of our basement and some the result of deciding to tear down some outbuildings in our yard-- and especially the latter has gotten me concerned about what might be going on in my house. When we began ripping down an old shed, what we found surprised me. The boards were rotting away and in some places had clearly been eaten by ... well, something. I'm no expert. But I started worrying about termites. If there were termites in the shed, they could or would soon be in my house. Luckily, I don't have to just guess and worry. I can get information about termites and their causes and cures by going to the Termites Guide. They've got information that will help me determine whether I have termites, what a termite bond is, and most importantly, how to get rid of termites.

Dunkin' Donuts pulls Rachael Ray add for Islamic Scarf Terrorism Fears
2008-06-04 02:47:00 The Gap is widening. No...I am not talking about the gap between my ears! The Communications Gap between Muslims and the rest of the world. The East West Gap. Well at least in the United States there is a growing gap between what people believe about Islam and the true beliefs of the Muslims in America. Now we have this story with Rachael ray and Dunkin' Donuts. 2008-06-03 13:07:00 So, today’s the day when Max Mosley meets his nemesis in the form of a FIA hearing that will vote on whether members feel he is fit to continue as the organisation’s president. Opinion is split as to whether he’s going to pull it off - our view is that the political currents and eddies around this one are so deep that you’d need a great deal of insider knowledge to be able to make a worthwhile prediction. The meeting started at 0830 BST and the results of the secret ballot of the 222 members are expected this afternoon.
