Hey Hey - I'm on the Feast of Fun podcast!

Photo Credit: Fausto Fernos via Flickr You need to go checkout today's episode #1039 of the Feast of Fun Podcast - and not just because I'm on it! You don't know the Feast of Fun?  Then shame on you (just kidding). Not only are they three time Best LGBT Podcast Award Winners, they're also Chicago Now bloggers and overall Social Networking and New Media mavens. Those workaholic boys put on a 5-day a week podcast right from their home studio in Chicago and we are lucky to have them as part of our community.  In today's show we talk about the Great Nationwide Kiss-in, a hot underwear ad that's not so hot and we play with a whole bunch of instruments, but I'm...
In Print: Feast of Fools, by Ariah Fine
2009-07-21 21:08:00
I recently received a copy of the summer CONSP!RE Magazine, in which I have an article. It’s a brief article about working with a group called Food Not Bombs. If you want to get a print copy you can find out where to pick them up here (they’re free!). Though I like getting things published (maybe for an ego boost if nothing else), it not nearly as satisfying as writing a blog post or something and getting feedback from others about how it’s impacted them. I rarely if ever hear anything back about things I’ve written in print. But that’s okay. So, just to cover all my bases. Here’s the article: Feast Of Fools Several years ago, I started hanging out with a group of folks called Food Not Bombs, an international revolutionary movement “sharing free vegetarian food with hungry people and protesting war and poverty.” We redeemed food from the excess trash of our consumer culture, and made delicious stews, pastas, and sandwiches. Then, each Sunday, ...
Father's Day Feast!
2009-06-22 04:53:00
It was a nice, tight, boring White Sox win on Sunday afternoon.Just the kind I like.I'm a purist and I've never regarded a 10-7, four error performance, even when you win it, as baseball. That's more like softball you see at your local park. Me, I'll take a 4-1 win, or a 2-0 win or a 3-1 win any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Lots of good things today.Paul Konerko (Tribune File Photo / Phil Velasquez - 2008)Mark Buehrle's pitching, Paul Konerko's 1000th career RBI and perhaps most importantly NO ERRORS!So the Sox again ride the up and down roller-coaster for the 2009 season. Now three games under .500 yet still "in the race" because it's a...

Fat Tuesday? The Feast Before The Lenten Fast!
2009-02-24 15:32:00
Today is the day when one often hears the greeting,? Happy Fat Tuesday!? It does not refer to the anticipation associated with joining Jenny Craig the following day. The expression recalls the tradition Catholics have in celebrating the day before Ash Wednesday in the Anglo-Irish tradition of having pancakes as a meal before the austerities ...
Cash for the ?Arts? In Obama?s Stinkulus Bill: A Caviar Feast on a Cheesebu
2009-02-06 20:39:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Obama has called the economic worries facing Americans a “continuing disaster” and an “economic crisis,” one verging on a “catastrophe.” It will all “turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession,” he says, unless we pass the stimulus bill now. There is no time to wait. It’s an emergency. We’re ...

Red Rock Casino - Feast Buffet 2008
2009-01-25 08:04:00
Red Rock Casino Feast Buffet in December 2008. We had a coupon from the local newspaper, which was buy 1 get 1 free at any Station casino buffet, plus we had a Boarding Pass card, so this breakfast buffet was $6.99 + tax = $7.53 for two. It seemed like most people had the coupon from the newspaper, so there was a long line. We waited about 30 minutes, and when we were leaving, the line was even longer. We went to other Station casinos later that day, and all the buffets had a long line.Somehow, I really wanted orange juice this day, unfortunately, the waitress said "out of orange juice". This is the breakfast buffet, it's only been 3 hours since they opened and already no more orange juice? Okay, so I got apple juice. It was low quality, super sweet apple juice with lots of corn syrup. I couldn't drink more than half.OK, now, lets talk about food. It SUCKS. This place is suppose to be the locals favorite buffet, maybe because it's cheap. In fact, $7 for two is cheaper than going...
The Feast of the Seven Fishes
2008-12-18 13:00:00
Technically, on the Catholic Christmas season calendar, December 13 is The Feast of St Lucia. Over in Fairmont, WV on that day this year the local Italian community instead celebrated the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This southern Italian feast is traditionally celebrated on Christmas Eve. It stems from the observance of the Cena della Vigilia, the wait for the miraculous birth of Christ in which early Christians fasted on Christmas Eve until after receiving communion at Midnight Mass. At one time, Rome was the farthest point north where ‘La Vigilia’ was celebrated, but today Italians throughout the world celebrate it. Fairmont local son Robert Tinnell is a screenwriter, director and author whose book, "Feast of the Seven Fishes," inspired Fairmont’s city fathers to launch the local celebration, now in its third year."When I was kid, eating fish on Christmas Eve was just something you did," says Tinnell. "We never called it by name. I never even bothered to question why we did...
Halloween Feast
2008-11-01 15:06:00
We went to Sara's mom's in Charlestown for a little Halloween party. Let me first say that I have never seen so many trick-or-treaters in my entire life. Little kids were everywhere and there was a constant flow walking down the street! We all sat on Sara's mom's front steps to take it all in and hand out candy. I wanted to take pictures, but then realized it would be creepy of me to take pictures of other people's children and put them on the Internet. So instead, you get pictures of all the delicious food we ate after the trick-or-treaters were gone (or really, after the 8 pounds of candy ran out).Sara's pumpkin hummus and black bean and corn dip:Katie's vegetables to accompany the dips: Celeste's pork tenderloin with the best carrots in the world: Celeste's amazing chicken with sharp cheddar and apples: Chels's yummy salad with goat cheese, cranberries, and apples: Celeste's rice:Celeste's spinach: Sara's desserts. Her famous sugar cookies (made with the cookie cutte...
What Market? Program Traders Feast on Other People's Wealth by Evan Palmer
2008-10-11 00:28:00
The market, popularly thought of as thriving industrious individuals who behave rationally and collect relevant information and make informed decisions - or not. It's not true in today's market if it ever was. Today's market is electronic and hierarchical, the small trades feed into the bigger trades feed into the trades which qualify as program trades. A standard definition being over $1 million worth of 15 or more stocks. But even that is piddling compared to the real movers and shakers. The big investment banks employ more staff on their IT side than on their trading side. As do the hedge and mutual funds. The volumes and percentages of all trading done by a few behemoths is increasing. The danger from hackers especially well-placed insiders is far greater here than elsewhere. Siphoning off even a hundred million a day is within rounding errors. The small and decreasing circle of those who trade the bulk of the world's financial markers wield enormous unaccountable power with ...

Feast of Fools in Burlington Augu 8 - 10
2008-08-08 19:20:00
Burlington City Arts is presenting the Festival of Fools this weekend. It is described as a "curated festival of street theater" but it looks to me like a mix of goofy fun, slapstick, circus stunts, and silly music - some very funny entertainment in other words. There is a Feast of Fools web page that describes the performers in detail and has links to each one's web site. Looks like a lot of fun and worth checking out if you are in the area. And there is all the usual great things to see and do in Burlington such as Church Street Market Place, ECHO Aquarium and Museum, Waterfront Park (great place to watch the sunsets over the Adirondack mountains on the other side of Lake Champlain), Maritime Museum, cruise boats, ferry to NY, etc. Lots of good restaurants and pubs too. Plus people watching. (c) 2008 Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus Inn

Last year, I managed to put together an excellent array of images of this outstanding pilgrimage center. Even I am still impressed with these photos from various online sources. Now, let us revisit Saint

Middle Eastern Feast
2008-06-03 05:20:00
Falafel. I became obsessed with it in high school. I ate it every Tuesday, in between track practice and piano lessons. When I got to college, there was thankfully an amazing falafel place next to my dorm (Pauly's Pocket). Soon though, I was on a bit of a falafel overload. I needed a break. It wasn't until this year that I re-discovered falafel. Thanks in part to living in Brookline, home to many delicious Middle Eastern eateries (Rami's=amazing) and hanging out with Sara, another falafel fan. So after traveling around Boston and surrounding areas, testing out falafel, we decided we needed to make our own. Sara found a fairly simple, healthy falafel recipe from Martha Stewart and we threw our own little Middle Eastern night.First on the menu was the falafel of course. One important fact Sara and I discovered- chickpeas are also known as garbanzo beans. This may come in handy when you're searching for chickpeas. Anyway. You're going to need a little food processor to make this, ...

T&T - A Carribean Feast...
2008-05-16 16:19:00
My T&T event rocks, because I get to choose a blog I want and cook anything I want :-) It actually is not that easy with wonderful blogs like Cynthia´s Tastes Like Home, for there are so many things one just drool at and it has been actually very hard to pick out a recipe that I would like to try without ditching all the others. So I did what I did - and made a huuuuge Carribean feast:Here are my (Cynthia´s) dishes that finally made it to my table, a delicious trio of dry curries with only four ingredients :1. Chickpea Spinach - a wonderful combination of spicy spinach and salty chickpeas. Crunchy and chewy, yum...2. Eggplant Tofu (originally paneer) - a lovely light dry curry flavored with a unique garam masala paste. I added a teaspoon of roasted cumin seeds and a sprinkle of amchoor (mango) powder to the original recipe to bring out the flavor of rather plain Tofu.3. Chickpea Eggplant - a fantastic cross-match of both dishes above, a lovely fusion with heaps of fresh Europe...
