The Water On Your Land Is To Be The ?Property? of the Federal Government
2009-05-09 03:24:00
This is an UNBELIEVABLE piece of brainless legislation to hand over ALL water in the United States to the Federal government. Must watch: Guess that means my mud puddles in my yard are ‘property of the U.S. Government’. I think NOT. I won’t even say what this means for me or for you, or what you should ...
Federal Government to Bail out Stimulus Package
2009-02-27 13:43:00
The federal government is ready to spending $4 billion to buy and fix up foreclosed homes despite concerns over how the money is being distributed. There have been questions about oversight and fears that the program amounts to a windfall for banks that repossessed the properties. Now, even before the first dollars have been spent, another $2 billion is on the way under the economic stimulus package signed this week by President Obama. Last month, the Department of Housing and Urban Development signed off hundreds of grants for all 50 states. This program is known as the Neighborhood Stabilization Program it was passed last year as part of a housing rescue plan that was regarded at the time as the most significant housing legislation in a generation. Most of the critics have not supported the program for the lack of money it will send some hard-hit communities and the discontent stirring among residents who want a say in what happens to their neighborhoods. The question is what kind...
Will we ever contain the size of the federal government?
2008-11-18 13:35:00
I first begin to feel disappointment with President Bush in the spring of 2003 when my friend David Boaz of the Cato Institute alerted me to an Op-ed he had written detailing the Republican’s spendthrift ways. Instead of containing the size of the federal government as our party had long committed to do, Bush had ...

Note to the Federal Government: Leave the Price-Setting to the Market
2008-04-28 21:10:00
Those unfamiliar with marketplace dynamics may not recognize how government activity has created price distortions across our economy. But when these “artificial” chains fail to restrain the market, the underlying forces become easier to see. Much as the easy credit mandated by the government propelled home prices to bubble levels, similar forces pushed college tuitions up into the stratosphere. Both systems are currently breaking down along similar lines. In light of the staggering cost of college education today, it may seem unbelievable that, in the early 1950s, my father was able to finance his own education by spending the summer waiting tables. Like most in his generation, eight weeks of work per year allowed him to graduate debt free. In contrast, the debt load borne by today’s college graduates is so oppressive that the financial challenges are becoming a palpable psychological strain on an entire generation. The irony is that, without easy access to stud...

Presidential passport breach: Why do contractors have easy access to sensit
2008-03-23 19:25:00
The accessing of private passport-based travel data of all three Presidential candidates by contractors working for the State Department has finally galvanized Capitol Hill to address the issue of privacy–something we’ve been begging them to do for years. Ron Wyden sums it up succinctly: “The Government Accountability Office has been warning about this problem for a decade. And it seems to me in this administration, there’s been pretty much a culture of disregard for privacy, and that’s part of the problem,” he said. Wyden may have been referring to a 2006 report from the GAO documenting the lack of oversight in sharing Social Security Numbers with contractors working for various federal agencies, including the IRS and the FBI, as well as within the private sector. It is but one of many reports the investigative agency has issued documenting the serious vulnerabilities our government’s mad drive to outsource its functions to the private sect...

Federal government unscheduled leave, schools closed (except DC)
2008-02-22 12:18:00
The federal government is opening on time in the Washington, D.C. area but with an unscheduled leave policy in effect due to the expected winter weather / icy conditions. Most public school systems are closed with the exception of the District of Columbia which will inexplicably open on time. Normally, I support the push to keep schools open but icy conditions are not to be trifled with under the current circumstances. Today's situation is unusual in that officials had to make judgments based on anticipated road conditions rather than actual conditions in the early morning hours. A full closure listing is on the WTOP/103.5 site.

Fred Thompson’s Plan to Reduce Federal Government Spending

In 2007, the federal government’s spending rose to an astounding $2.8 trillion– the equivalent of $22,000 per household. Growth in federal government spending, however, rarely translates into better services for the American people. Solutions for many public policy problems are best found in the private sector, and then at the State and local level–not in ...

The Federal Government And Marijuana

Federal Government limits emergency care for illegal immigrants
2007-09-22 19:03:00
U.S. Rule Limits Emergency Care for Immigrants By SARAH KERSHAW Published: September 22, 2007 The federal government has told New York State health officials that chemotherapy, which had been covered for illegal immigrants under a government-financed program for emergency medical care, does not qualify for coverage. The decision sets the stage for a battle between the state and federal governments over how medical emergencies are defined. I think most of you would be shocked that such a thing occurred in the first place. Of course it's a just thing to do. Please keep in mind that medical care for illegal aliens isn't being denied; the only difference is that the federal government won't pay for it. Illegal aliens can still purchase medical care, help each other out, or ask for private charity. Full story here.
The Federal Government is gearing to drop the Key Interest Rate.
2007-09-19 00:59:00
The Federal Government is gearing to drop the Key Interest Rate. Back on August 17th the government pushed more money in the banking market to ease some pressure and they announced a half point cut in the discount rate - this is the interest the Feds charge to make direct loans to the banks.  However, even with this the economy still appeared to be heading into a recession. The Feds are hoping to stabilize the fears of Wall Street, foreign investors, you and me by dropping the key interest rate. What we hear is the government just might not stop there as potentially three more cuts could come if fears do not lighten up soon. More to follow....

The argument about whether bloggers never do real reporting is not very interesting to us, but suffice it to say there are numerous instances where they do the same thing as journalists, even in the tiny public health blogosphere. A case in point is my colleague. Dr. David Michaels at The Pump Handle (TPH), who has been dogging the story of flavoring workers lung (aka popcorn workers lung) from the outset, and has even broken a few stories. Today’s post at TPH may be the most significant entry yet. But first, some background. Along with being much more morally justifiable, a limited republic is much more pragmatic than an expansive central government. States try to fix immigration problems that the federal government refuses
2007-08-07 03:38:00
There are a number of untruths in the story that follows. Lazy reporters just regurgitate what others have said and the really sad part os that so many people believe them. Many opponents said illegal immigrants took jobs from U.S. workers. But employers from Arizona to Texas argued that thousands jobs were going begging through a lack of takers. Many people refuse to work for the much lower than legal wages some companies pay illegal workers. Here’s a shocker for you, Americans did those jobs forever before the invasion form Mexico started. And they would again as well if paid a reasonable legal wage. Last month the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to provide an additional $3 billion in emergency spending to beef up border security after lawmakers failed to enact broader immigration reforms championed by President George W. Bush.Oh please. Does anyone, anyone at all, really believe that Bush intends for a single second to beef up border security? Not for a second folks. In a test ca...

REXANO Editorial by Zuzana Kukol, www.REXANO.org Las Vegas, NV, August 1, 2007–Once again, dirty sneaky politicians are attacking exotic pet owners with reintroduction of two federal bills, Captive Primate Safety Act (S 1498 IS, Introduced in Senate) and (HR 2964 IH, Introduced in House). http://www.rexano.org/DA_FEDERA-L.htm These ‘monkey bills’ are supposed:  “To amend the Lacey Act Amendments of 1981 to prohibit the import, export, transportation, sale, receipt, acquisition, or purchase in interstate or foreign commerce of any live animal of any prohibited wildlife species, and for other purposes.” ( http://www.fws.gov/le/LawsTreat-ies/Lacey.pdf).  According to the Fish and Wildlife (FWS) Lacey act website (http://www.fws.gov/laws/laws_d-igest//lacey.html): “Under this law, it is unlawful to import, export, sell, acquire, or purchase fish, wildlife or plants taken, possessed, transported, or sold: 1) in violation of U.S. or Indian law, or 2) in interstate or forei...

Do Not Mail Bills Create Conflict Between States and Federal Government
2007-03-06 05:49:02
About eleven states have introduced "Do not mail" bills, modeled after the Federal Trade Commission's&nbs-p;"Do not call" telephone registry.  The states include Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, New York, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Texas, Vermont (just last week) and Washington.  Don't worry if your state is not among them, though.  The laws, if enacted, will not likely survive a constitutional attack. You may remember from your Civics class that the Postal Service is regulated solely by the federal government, and that the several states have no authority to get in the middle.  In legal jargon, we call it preemption.Nevertheless, many legislators around the company are jumping on the bandwagon.  They argue that homeowners should be able to control what arrives in their mailbox.  True or not, MIPTC wishes those legislators would turn their attention to what arrives in my e-mail inbox, not my m...
