McCain, CA Marriage Initiative & Federalism
2008-06-30 17:08:00 When working on his piece on presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s letter supporting Proposition 8 which would enshrine the traditional definition of marriage in the California constitution, LA Weekly writer Patrick Range McDonald contacted me for a comment on this decision. As I considered my response, I came up with something a little longer than ...

The Politics Of Federalism
2008-05-12 10:11:00 Hantu Laut Sabahans have always had an ambivalent relationship with the central government. This love and hate relationship goes as far back as the time of the USNO (United Sabah National Organisation) government under Tun Dato Mustapha Harun, a flamboyant, unmanagable and most feared Chief Minister Sabah ever had. The only leader of a state who had 2 stated-owned private jets (Grumman 2) and

Environmental Federalism in the Kingdom of Bush
2008-01-06 09:20:00 Just like the federal government will not permit terminally ill dopers in California to exhale cannabis breath into the atmosphere, they don't want the Golden State Hippies restricting the amount of noxious gases the state's motor vehicles cough up.I have to wonder how long it is going to take for the tree huggers, and their leftist sympathizers, to realize the federal government is no more their friend than is the oil industry. The left has traditionally felt that no important function can be left in the hands of any entity other than the benevolent federal government. It is axiomatic with these boys and girls that the states are way too stupid and backwards to ever do the right thing. If clean air was left to these dumbass political entities, progressives just know the nation would turn into one big Superfund site. But that is not the way it has turned out.Even before George Bush converted the EPA into an agency committed to thwarting environmental policy, the attorney g...

Thompson Supports Federalism
2007-11-04 18:40:00 Thompson's endorsement of federalism on Meet the Press today is the path the Republicans need to take if they want votes from people like me.They love to use the Bible to defend their anti-choice, anti-gay positions, but Thompson shows why Republicans should really be opposed to Roe vs. Wade, because it trumps federalism.Thompson supports states deciding on gay marriage and abortion, and so do I. I'm pro-choice and strongly pro-gay marriage, but I think this fight should be taken to the states.I endorse a country where all 50 states legalize abortion and gay marriage, but through state jurisdictions and not federal jurisdictions. What isn't implied or stated in the Constitution is left up to the states. That's why if we lived in the 1950's, I'd probably be a conservative Republican.Thompson has quickly jumped into the front as being my favorite Republican. I'm still going to probably vote Democratic next year, but I feel comfortable with someone like Thompson.

Federalism should extend to marijuana raids
2007-09-12 20:49:00 Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) recently said that, if elected president, he would end the federal raids on marijuana clinics in states that have legalized the drug for medical purposes. That makes the Democratic field unanimous now — all would end the raids and allow the states to craft their own medical marijuana policy, free from federal interference. By contrast, just two of the remaining GOP candidates — Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) and Rep. Tom Tancredo (Colo.) — and none of the front-runners have promised to call off the raids. This is unfortunate for a party that once fancied itself the torch-bearer for federalism — the idea that most laws should be made on as local a level as possible, both to encourage state “laboratories of democracy” to experiment with different policies and to allow people to utilize the freedom of movement to choose to live in those jurisdictions with laws that best reflect their own values. If ever there were an issue for which federalism would seem t...

Federalism and Delegate Selection
2007-08-21 21:19:00 Ed Morrissey weighs in on the latest primary maneuvering at Captain's Quarters today: This stampede to gain advantage over one another started off as being amusing, segued quickly to annoying, and now may be damaging the entire process. Whatever real problems plagued the primary process in years past, a lack of arbitrariness and capriciousness was not among them. Now we have states asserting some sort of phallus-measuring mentality about their own importance as compared to the rest of the Union, and it's turning the process that selects our head of state into even more of a circus than ever before. Eventually, this will damage the federalist principle of states conducting their own elections for presidential primaries. The irresponsibility of states to adhere to rational schedules and the resultant winter election dates will create pressure on Congress to pursue a national schedule for presidential primaries. It will be wrong to do so, but at some point the states will lose what...

Fred Thompson On Federalism
2007-08-02 14:59:00 From the blog Hick Politics Fred Thompson, as you know, has not declared yet whether he is “officially” in the running for President of the United States. His detractors have been quite busy, furthering unsubstantiated claims of one non-scandal after another. Some have even accused him of not being the real deal. My personal favorite among ...
Katrina & Federalism
2006-08-29 19:21:10 As I watch the documentary, Surviving Katrina on the Discovery Channel, I’m impressed that this program shows the flooded buses, that is, the school busses that Mayor Ray Nagin failed to use to evacuate the 100,000 citizens of his city who did not have cars. This is the first time I have seen a non-conservative news/information outlet show a picture of those vehicles, an image of the failure of the New Orlean city government to deal with the hurricane. In their eagerness to use the Katrina disaster as fodder for their increasingly negative reporting of the Administration, all too many in the MSM neglected numerous facts, like the flooded busses which demonstrate the failure of state and local governments to respond to Katrina. So far, this documentary seems to be the exception to so much I’ve seen in the MSM on Katrina. It makes clear that government officials on all levels blundered in responding to the disaster. Perhaps, that’s because of the size of the disast...
