When Ubuntu tries to be Fedora
2008-05-17 10:17:00 They struggled trying to keep the betas in control. Inclusion of too new , latest technologies caused breakage and other problems to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.Harald Hoyer wrote a good comment out of the responses to Mark Shuttleworth's post about synchronizing distro releases. Ubuntu should stay as they are. Its a good distro for me to recommend for those users who just want a JustWorks machine with no interest to contribute to FOSS world. Fedora development is admittedly way too fast for those type of users to bother. If Ubuntu tries to follow Fedora rapidness, that won't solve anything (except, maybe, open a way for grabbing the Fedora contributor/userbase to the Ubuntu side). Ubuntu has been a good player in trying to solve their bug #1. So, keep it that way. The Fedora path is too hostile for Ubuntu current target market. - Izhar Firdaus -

New Fedora 9 makes waves by emphasizing contributors
2008-05-14 02:45:00 The Fedora distribution has a reputation for innovation, and the new Fedora 9, released today, is no exception. With features that range from easy filesystem encryption to support for the ext4 format, it includes a wide range of features that are likely to become standard in other distributions in the next six months. But for Paul W. Frields, who became Fedora project leader in February, what distinguishes the release is less the technology than the community that supports it, and how the technology contributes to the larger free software world.

Fedora 9 - an OS that even the Linux challenged can love
2008-05-13 02:46:00 Fedora 9, the latest release from the Fedora Project, goes up for download on Tuesday. The ninth release of Fedora ushers in a number of changes aimed at making the venerable distribution a more newbie-friendly desktop, but longtime users needn't fear a great dumbing down; version 9 packs plenty of power user punch as well. Fedora is a community-driven distribution sponsored by Red Hat and, while Fedora may be best known as a popular server OS, most of the changes in Fedora 9 are aimed at making the system friendlier for desktop users.

2008-05-09 11:17:00 Static routing is the term used to refer to the manual method used to set up routing. An administrator enters routes into the router using configuration commands. Fedora goes to a community-dominated board
2008-04-23 18:03:00 I'm very pleased to report that with the post-Fedora 9 election, the Board composition will be a better reflection of the strides our community has made in self-organization and self-governance, and of our healthy partnership with Red Hat. Starting with this election, the Board will move to a composition of five (5) community-elected seats and four (4) Red Hat-appointed seats. This is an issue I've been advocating over the past couple of weeks, and I'm delighted to be able to make this change following my first release as Fedora Project Leader.

Runlevels - Debian (Ubuntu) / Fedora (CentOS)
2008-04-21 21:49:00 There are six different runlevels in Linux, there could be more than six, but for compatibility reasons six are the default. I have used RedHat and Debian based Linux, more specifically Fedora and Ubuntu and Debian itself, I have noticed that there is a difference in the runlevels on this different Linux distributions. Well but first let's define the runlevels: Runlevels in Linux are seven and they are: - 0 = halt - 1 = single user - 2 = CLI, multi-user, no net - 3 = CLI, multi-user, networked - 4 = open - 5 = GUI, multi-user, networked - 6 = reboot You can define more of them if you want, but whit this should be enough, a runlevel will define which software to start when you enter in that specific runlevel. For example if you go to runlevel 0, the computer will halt, and probable turn off (If it is a modern computer). When you enter a specific runlevel, Linux will run some scripts that are located at: /etc/rc0.d Run level 0 /etc/rc1.d Run level 1 /etc/rc2.d Run level 2 /etc/rc3...

Fedora 9 Preview review

I originally thought that the persistant data feature was only for user data but as it turns out it applies to the complete system... so not only can you store your documents... you can also install updates, new applications, create accounts, and save settings. There is nothing special you have to do... it works just like a hard drive would.
