Feline Slade's Perspective from the Audience Member's Viewpoint
2009-09-16 01:44:00
Slamming Shut the Door on the “Killer App”by Feline Sladevia http://felineslade.wordpress.co-m"M Linden’s now-infamous labeling of music as a “killer app” for Second Life has led to a lot of discussion and blowing of hot air. Even when some very specific and relatively easily-implementable suggestions were made during the Looking to the Future of Live Performance in Second Life session at SLCC (Really, how hard would it be to repurpose an unused subcategory in Events?), they were automatically put in the “Not in 2009″ pile. In the end, the live music community has been left to its own devices to feel its way along.I’m pretty much a nobody on the Second Life live music scene. I don’t own a venue. I am not a musician, since I can’t tolerably play an instrument as well as sing. So why is the current music venue “to cover charge or not to cover charge” drama bothering me? Maybe it’s because I’m the supposedly deep pockets that it feels like some music venue ow...

Feral Cats: Feline Foes vs. Family
2008-12-10 06:01:00
Two stray cats, producing two litters per year, can wind up with 420,000 offspring after seven years. Ever wonder where that stray cat came from? It was likely lost, abandoned (when its family's home was foreclosed on, for example), or ran away from an abusive situation. Feral cats are usually th
Living With FIV (Feline Aids)
2008-10-13 03:19:00
By Kate GarveyFour years ago I was living in a community with a high rate of unwanted animals. During the summer, the city shelter was forced to euthanize 14 to 17 thousand animals each month. Feral cats and cats that had Feline Aides (FIV) were euthanized immediately. At the time I did not have knowledge or experience with feral cat trap and release programs. I was sharing my house with six healthy cats when I met Scruffy, a sweet, adorable, athletic feral cat, that tested positive for FIV.I tried to find a home for Scruffy where he would be the only cat in the household, but no one was interested in adopting him. After that my choices were limited, I could have Scruffy euthanized, I could have him neutered and leave him as an outdoor cat knowing he might infect other cats, or I could merge him with my healthy cats (I had four other rescued cats at the time). There was and still seems to be an ongoing debate about how cats contract FIV. Some veterinarians believe FIV can be passed ...

Four Common Causes of Feline Sneezing
2008-07-03 04:10:00
By D SwainIn most cases, feline sneezing is a result of your cat's respiratory system functioning properly. However, your cat may possibly be sick if he starts to sneeze a lot. There are various things that can cause an episode of feline sneezing. Let's take a look at some of the most common causes.InfectionAn upper respiratory infection is one of the most common causes of feline sneezing. Infections that cause sneezing episodes are usually caused by the Adenovirus or the Parainfluenza virus. These viruses are highly contagious and can easily infect your cat after he comes into contact with other animals. The infections produce other symptoms besides sneezing such as swollen glands, coughing, and mucus discharge.RhinotracheitisAnothe-r common cause of feline sneezing is the rhinotracheitis virus. This virus is responsible for causing herpes-1 in cats. Feline sneezing can be a difficult condition to treat if it is caused by this virus. Kittens infected with this virus can suffer per...

Feline Agility -- What is it?
2008-04-15 08:47:00
Cat Agility involves leading or getting your cat through an obstacle course. The course consists of Hurdles, Hoops, Weave Pools, and Stairs. Cats enter the ring and are given some time to get use to the ring.Once a cat gets use to the ring the cat is lead through the course by it's handler ( the handler uses a toy- such a s lure toy). The handler should not touch the cat but can entice or encourage the cat around the course. The cat is timed during it's run through the course. Timing starts when the cat touches first obstacle and ends when last obstacle is completed. The score is not only based on time but, number of obstacles completed, if the cat completes all obstacles, bonus points are given for seconds under the maximum allowed time of 4 minutes 30 seconds.Cat Agility events are fun for the whole family. The cats are quite entertaining. Many of the cats will have no problem getting through the course, while others think the object is to put their handler through the ...

Cat Training Problems? Train A Better Kitty Through Feline Communication
2008-02-24 02:55:00
Cats are amazing, unique and intelligent animals. Any cat lover knows this instinctually and believes they have a wonderful connection and understanding of their kitty. It comes as a surprise to many when their adorable cat misbehaves by clawing furniture, being antisocial, refusing to use the kitty litter and so on. We ask ourselves why and wonder why normal animal training techniques do not work. While there are many reasons of all of these things one of the core concepts you need to know when you have cat training problems is how to really communicate with your feline.Cats communicate in four ways:VisualThe first and easiest way to communicate with you cat is to understand their visual cues. While there are more obvious cues like wagging tail when annoyed and the ears going back when scared or angry there are other more subtle cues. For instance did you know that when you make eye contact with a cat if you lower your eyes and squint slightly it is a sign of acknowledgement and af...

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)
2008-01-30 17:04:00
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), caused by a feline coronavirus, is seen worldwide. Although a large number of cats may be infected with the feline coronavirus, only a few develop clinical FIP. The disease is progressive and may manifest clinically as a continuum between the effusive (serositis or wet) and noneffusive (granulomatous or dry) forms. A distinct clinical form of noneffusive FIP affecting only the eyes or brain (or both) may be seen. Mortality, even with therapy, approaches 100%. Although primarily a disease of domestic cats, FIP has been recognized in exotic Felidae, including the large and small wild cats. Among larger cats, FIP is seen in lions, leopards, jaguars, mountain lions, and especially cheetahs. Smaller cats susceptible to FIP include the sand cat, lynx, caracal, and pallas cat.Etiology:Field strains of feline coronavirus vary in their ability to induce FIP. Some isolates cause FIP (feline infectious peritonitis virus [FIPV]); others cause more localized ...
Feline defensive rage likened to human anger
2008-01-29 11:30:00
Scientists studying feline defensive rage liken it to human anger, saying that both emerge and unleash in the brain.   With each such advance in the understanding of the mammalian brain's recipe for rage, scientists seem to be moving closer to developing medications to quell violent behaviour in humans and other mammals.   In cats, such therapies may prevent the hissing, back arching, ear retraction, claw extensions and fur standing-on-end that are typical indicators of feline defensive rage.   In humans, related anger reveals itself with road rage, an impulsive form of anger that involves little or no thought.   "In road rage, the person never thinks about what he is doing but just acts in the way he does because he feels that he has been threatened by someone else and the impulsive behaviour represents a way by which he can protect himself from such a threat," Discovery News quoted co-author Allan Siegel, a professor in the Department of Neurology ...

Natural Ways to Treat Feline Constipation
2008-01-22 11:00:00
The concept of feline constipation was not one that I had ever heard of until we had a cat that experienced it almost two years ago. Initially we thought he was having trouble urinating. He would go into his litter box overall the day out-of-doors going to the bathroom. Our veterinarian told us that feline constipation is very fairly common, but that is misdiagnosed umpteen times by cat owners since urinary disagreements are far more common and talked about more than feline constipation botherations.Feline constipation is more prevalent in cats that are 8 years old and older, but cats of any age can existence feline constipation. The typically bowel movement schedule for cats is one to two bowel movements occasionally day. Some cats go more or subtracting than that. However, is a cat has not had a bowel movement in three or more days it can indicate a feline constipation problem. It can cause serious harm to a cat experiencing feline constipation if not treatment is finished ...

Cat litter box dilemmas stem from a variety of sources. One of the uttermost common causes is a feline Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).Cats tolerate pain pretty well. As a matter of fact, we can be fooled that kitty is feeling lovely due to she's eating, purring, and snuggling up to us for human love and study.
