Felix Hernandez in 2009
2009-01-28 18:47:00 Felix Hernandez in 2009 While reading a newspaper while on vacation I came across the Mariners signing of Felix Hernandez to a one-year, $3.8 million contract. God, that’s quite a deal when compared to the Silva’s and Washburn’s of the world. Another feather in the arbitration, pre-FA contract’s cap. Any who, looking at Felix he’s bound ...

Felix Hernandez Shuts Down Boston Red Sox Offense...Seattle 8 Boston 0
2008-06-07 11:21:00 Chalk up Friday night's Boston Red Sox loss to the Seattle Mariners, an 8-0 whitewashing, to superior pitching, and that pitching was authored by Felix Hernandez, who ALWAYS pitches well at Fenway Park. Last night, he went six innings and gave up only six hits. The Mariners' bullpen took over from there and made that shutout official. Here's what he, his manager and one of his opponents had to say after the game...?Felix stepped up and has been pretty good in Fenway Park,? Mariners manager John McLaren said.?It was important for me, important for the team. I was trying to keep the lead,? said Hernandez, who won for the second time in as many starts after going seven starts without a win. "He did a great job of keeping us off base, and really not letting us get anything together and when we did have something going, he made some pitches when he had to,? Casey said.Peter here. Boston starter Bartolo Colon's performance was better than the "runs allowed" figure indicates. He went s...

Crappy Felix Day
2008-05-04 06:02:00 Felix Hernandez, pictured above, was overcome with emotion before breaking down in tears behind the mound after a frustrating loss to the Yankees on Saturday. After hearing snickering and “Queen Felix” comments from a group of players in the tunnel, manager John McLaren, a sensitive guy himself, closed the clubhouse doors and defended his young hurler in an ...
Felix Hernandez shines as Mariners beat Oakland (AP)
2008-04-17 11:43:00 Felix Hernandez breezed through the Oakland lineup on his way to his first complete game in more than a year for Seattle. Chien-Ming Wang didn’t fare as well, but the New York Yankees still managed to get a win against the Boston Red Sox. Another AL ace, Cleveland’s C.C. Sabathia, was just awful in ...

Orioles rally past Mariners in ninth for 3-2 win, spoiling Felix Hernandez?
2008-04-06 22:07:00 Luis Hernandez singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, capping a three-run rally that carried the Baltimore Orioles past the Seattle Mariners, 3-2 on Sunday. The Mariners wasted an outstanding pitching performance by Felix Hernandez, who threw eight shutout innings as a replacement for Erik Bedard. Read the ...

Blustery day blows away concern about Ben Sheets, Felix Hernandez (AP)
2008-03-17 02:28:00 Hold the alarms over Milwaukee ace Ben Sheets and Seattle star Felix Hernandez allowing nine runs in a combined 7 1-3 innings as the Brewers beat the Mariners 8-4 on Sunday. Fly balls became home runs and defenders dropped pop ups on a windy, cold day. The sun-baked infield continued to play extremely fast. Read the ...

Felix Hernandez allows 2 HRs, but Mariners beat Brewers 5-2 (AP)
2008-03-07 00:08:00 Felix Hernandez had no choice but to challenge Ryan Braun. Behind in the count to last year’s NL Rookie of the Year in the second inning, Hernandez threw Braun a mid-90s fastball. The pitcher never bothered turning to watch the flight of the ball. “For what?” Hernandez said. “I saw that ball coming off the ...

Long-Term Deal For Felix Hernandez?
2008-02-29 15:22:00 According to John Hickey of the Seattle PI, a long-term deal for Felix Hernandez before the end of Spring Training seems possible. Hernandez won't make much above the minimum for '08, but maybe the Mariners can buy out his 2009-11 arbitration years at a discount. Hickey notes that Ms GM Bill Bavasi "detests the arbitration process." The Padres bought out Chris Young's arb years for $13.25MM in an extension done a year ago. Around the same time, Matt Cain received about the same amount to cover his arb years (though with a club option for the third). Based on those, Felix could push for $15-17MM or so in my estimation. Thoughts?

Felix Hernandez 2008 Projection
2007-11-01 22:27:00 Sorry about the lack of posts recently! I've been overwhelmed with other obligations. Let's take a look at the King himself, Felix Hernandez. Hernandez was seemingly the victim of terrible luck in 2007. It seems as if he pitches the exact same with neutral luck, he'll post a 3.52 ERA and 1.28 WHIP instead of the 3.92/1.37 he put up this year. There has been a lot of analysis on Felix's pitch selection and the like; this might be the reason he had a huge BABIP and HR/flyball ratio. So maybe it'll be less luck evening out and more just learning how to pitch. But he's oh-so-close to that breakout we've all been expecting. If you plug in 7.8 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 9.0 H/9, and 0.6 HR/9, you get the ERA and WHIP I stated above. He's got it all - command, a power strikeout repertoire, an extreme groundball rate. Look for it all to come together in '08, especially if the Mariners strengthen their defense. Say he throws down a .290 BABIP instead o...

Jose Guillen, Felix Hernandez lead Seattle Mariners past Texas Rangers 4-2
2007-08-25 06:19:00 Jose Guillen homered and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh to lift the Seattle Mariners past the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Friday night. Guillen hit his 19th home run with two outs in the first inning, then broke a 2-all tie with a hit that scored Ichiro Suzuki. Felix ...

Felix Hernandez (P-SEA)
2007-07-14 10:53:00 In 6 1/3 innings last night, Hernandez gave up 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out six to earn his sixth win of the year. The bullpen combined to throw 2 2/3 scoreless innings to preserve the victory as Hernandez won his third straight decision.

Blog Gets Through To Felix Hernandez
2007-07-08 04:24:00 If you've watched any Felix Hernandez starts prior to today, you probably noticed a pattern. He tries to establish his fastball early on, throwing the pitch constantly. His heater is a fine pitch and plenty fast, but he leaves it up in the zone sometimes. And a 96 mph fastball can be easy to hit when you see ten of them in a row (relatively speaking - obviously I still couldn't hit it). Hernandez has an amazing offspeed repertoire, especially his curveball. The die-hard fans at U.S.S. Mariner have been painfully aware of this trend for quite some time. Frustration boiled over on June 27th, when Dave Cameron wrote a post: An Open Letter To Rafael Chaves. Chaves is the Mariners' pitching coach. The letter pleaded for Chaves to make Felix mix up his pitches early on. Cameron probably never anticipated that Chaves would actually read the letter. But he did, and the pitching coach actually gave a copy to Felix for him to re...

Felix Hernandez
2007-06-05 03:11:00 Just as determining the trade value of JJ Hardy is difficult to do, assessing the trade value of Felix Hernandez is equally troublesome. Since returning from an elbow injury, he has not been good - 20IP, 14ER, 31H, 9BB and 24 Ks. But he is making his starts without reports of elbow soreness. (ed: How about that sore back? Could that be a result of some sort of compensation for a tender elbow?) However, there is no fantasy advice that says his owners can get equal value for him. The advice is to either hold him and hope for the best or deal him at the first sign of an $0.80 on the $1 offer. Fortunately, my AAOK 124.15 is one in which no player can have too many red flags to prevent him from being dealt. Recently, a $10 Felix Hernandez (long-term contract that expires after the 2008 season) was dealt for a $27 Daisuke Matsuzaka (2009). Accompanying Dice-K was Texas starting pitcher Vincente Padilla ($2, 200...

Felix Hernandez
2007-05-21 03:16:00 Felix Hernandez made his second start since being activated from the DL, and was the hard luck loser in a 2-1 contest with the San Diego Padres. He struck out nine and that must be considered a good thing. Expect a lot to be made of the eight hits allowed and three walks in those five innings of work. Putting eleven men on base over five innings of work and just letting two runs cross the plate seems to smack more of luck than the skill suggested by the nine ks. He did get lucky in the 5th. With Mike Cameron on first, Adrian Gonzalez hit a ground rule double that kept Cameron from scoring. Hernandez allowed a walk in the midst of striking out the side. Can we definitively assume anything but Cameron scoring on that hit? Would Hernandez have pitched the same with a man on second and no out down 3-1?

Felix Hernandez is Set to Return [David Stefanini]
2007-05-15 19:49:00 This from MLB.com: "After playing 25 games without right-hander Felix Hernandez, the Mariners welcome their stud starter back on Tuesday night, when he comes off the 15-day disabled list to face the visiting Angels in the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field. Hernandez won't be riding a white horse, but that's what his return could symbolize. "It's like acquiring an ace without giving up anyone," Willie Bloomquist said." Comments:The Mariners have been playing great baseball recently and this could be the shot in the arm they need to volt over the Angels in the AL West. If Felix can pitch like he did in the first two games of the season, the Mariners are going to be a very difficult team to play throughout this season. Felix is the kind of pitcher who puts an end to losing streak. The M's will be in the race the entire season for that reason alone. http://img68.imageshack.us/my.p-hp?image=amerlegendslogo5wj.gif-

Rich Harden and Felix Hernandez Part Deux
2007-05-02 22:52:00 A week ago, I noted that the A's and Mariners' had placed their aces on the DL and cautioned fantasy players to look for lengthened time tables for returns to get a signal that things are not going well with the injury recovery process. Today, we learn that Rich Harden is being advised to remain inactive for another 10 ten days. I'm not surprised as his progression has worsened with each piece of news. However, I was very surprised to read this on mlb.com:Instead of coming off the 15-day disabled list on Friday [May 4] to face the Yankees in New York, the 20-year-old now is penciled in to start the middle game of a three-game series against the Tigers on May 9. "We would rather be safe than sorry with him," manager Mike Hargrove said. "His bullpen [session on Tuesday] was fine, but we just feel better giving him a few extra days. If we get to [May 9] and feel he needs a few more days, we'll give him more time." Maybe it was the return of JJ Putz to good health, but...

Rich Harden and Felix Hernandez
2007-04-24 18:15:00 Yesterday, the A's and Mariners placed their respective aces, Rich Harden and Felix Hernandez, on the 15-day D.L. Hernandez's trip doesn't raise any eyebrows. The initial diagnosis called for a 10-20 day lay-off. Putting him on the D.L. was a foregone conclusion with that time frame. However, Rich Harden is a slightly different case. When he was removed from his start versus the Yankees on Sunday the 15th, initial reports from him had him making his next start the following Friday 4/20. A's management was a little more circumpsect. Then he missed that start but was going to start today 4/24. However, he was placed on the D.L. instead. Precautionary, maybe, but his prognosis has gotten progressively worse, and that is a red flag I look for when trying to guess how bad an injury is. It is also what I am attending to with Hernandez. Right now he is scheduled to come off the D.L. on May 4th and start against the Yankees. An...

Felix Hernandez
2007-04-20 02:07:00 Whew? The news out of Seattle is "King" Felix Hernandez doesn't need ulnar collateral ligament surgery. (Tommy John surgery for those of you who don't play experts on blogs!) Well, not exactly. According to The Seattle Times:Hernandez will miss at least one start and probably more. He won't throw at all for the next five days, but then will begin playing catch. Khalfayan said that a reasonable estimate is Hernandez will miss 10 to 20 days before pitching again. Hernandez suffered a strained flexor-pronator muscle, which is a muscle in the forearm. It's a common injury for pitchers, Khalfayan said, and is similar to what closer J.J. Putz suffered during spring training. Can Will Carroll's Friday morning fantasy chat be about anything else? (ed: How soon you forget about your afternoon post?) I recall Mr. Carroll saying Putz' had a torn ligament. Is that what Khalfayan means by similar to what Putz suffered? Who takes Hernandez's spot i...

2007-04-19 16:52:00 Hate to say I told you so : Felix Hernandez is Hurt Hernandez left after five batters on Wednesday night, complaining of tightness in his elbow. Not much is known at this time, but I would assume that he?ll miss at least one start for precautionary matters. Hopefully fantasy owners traded him this week, at the top of his market value after his duel with Dice-K. What?s going on in Seattle? Hell, less than a week ago I wrote: Like everyone else, I think Felix Hernandez is good. But unlike everyone else, I?m starting to get worried as hell. I know it?s early, but the fact is he?s still a kid and his innings need to be curbed. In both of his 2007 starts, he has thrown 111 pitches. It?s tough to take a guy out when he?s dominating but this can?t continue or he may be in big DL trouble. I figured this would be the fact but not this quickly. The Mariners need to come to a conclusion: A) We?re going to try for a playoff spot or B) It?s not going to happen this year, let?s get ready ...

Felix Hernandez Lights Out
2007-04-12 05:23:00 Felix Hernandez vs. Dice-K. My oh my. Wasn't Dice-K getting all the hype. It was crazy. You know what was even more crazy? Felix Hernandez. I'm not going to go into details here about the game but this guy is for real. When he keeps the ball low, he is nearly unhittable. If there is one guy in all of the majors that could contend for AL Cy Young with Santana its Hernandez. I know that it is still early but this kid is the real deal. I will soon be releasing an updated version of my top 250 I hope. I can guarantee one thing, this kid is going to be on his way up the board. I had him ranked 62 in my preseason rankings. You should expect to see him after the Oswalt/Zambrano/Peavy/Halladay- group but before last years NL Cy Young Brandon Webb. Just off the top of my head right now, that would put him in the top 50.
