Turkish Court Rules In Favor Of Secularism, Modernity And Feminism
2008-06-10 13:56:00
Turkey’s Constitutional Court overturned one of the ruling AK party’s central “reforms” – an amendment to the Turkish constitution that reintroduced Islamic headscarves in public universities, undermining decades of secularism in this Muslim country that wants to join the European Union. The opposition CHP party sued to block the amendment, and the court sided with ...

?Father McGillicuddy would never do a thing like that.? you can hear the believers saying. Because to admit that he could and he did would take the roof off the church. What Is Feminism
2008-05-04 17:09:00
Feminism is defined as the advocacy of social equality for men and women, in opposition to patriarchy and sexism. The first wave of the feminist movement in the United States began in the 1840’s as women opposed to slavery, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, drew parallels between the oppression of African Americans and ...

New Sex Poll
2008-04-20 05:31:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here. Updated April 23:A sex poll came out 2 1/2 years ago, but I am only just now hearing about it. Oh, well, it seems like sex is always leaving me standing at the station these days. The articles on the poll deal with teenagers having lots of oral sex, apparently instead of intercourse. The article all act like this is horrible, but I actually think it is good. Despite my feast or famine bachelor life, I actually do love sex, and I am a sexual liberationist. The articles mostly fuss on and on about all of the diseases one can acquire from oral sex.First of all, this is part of an insane national neurosis we have long had in this nation about sex. Europeans have long commented on it. We are Puritans yet we demand that Americans be having sex continuously. Even if they are not married. Even if they are not 18.Yes, it is true. Western Civilization: A Value Worth Saving
2008-04-13 09:08:00
Although I find it preposterous that White people themselves need to be saved from extinction, and cannot figure out any lawful way to so anyway, I think that White Nationalists (WN's) like Jared Taylor do make some interesting points. Taylor, like most WN's is a hardcore conservative, but when he talks about saving White civilization, the values he credits White civilization with are positively liberal. To be sure, I do disagree with the WN contention that Euro Whites created these liberal, free and humanitarian structures due to some unique endowment of their genes, though is it is an interesting argument. At the end of the day, it is not really falsifiable. With US Whites at 64% and dropping, a White majority in the US is probably a defeated dream. But a non-White majority in the US need not be the disaster that WN see it as. Even at 64% White, we still have one of the largest economies on Earth. Further, I feel that US non-Whites for the most part assimilate to the basically W...

My Inner Feminist
2008-04-02 02:19:00
My husband is driving home as we speak. I can remember as a child how upset I always was that I was continuously being fed the message that women are inferior to men. Women's brains don't work as well because we are ruled by emotion and not reason. Our opinions are not valid because we just don't understand the way the world works. We are to be tolerated. We get all riled up over silly little things and therefore our being upset is not worthy of acknowledgment. I guess this is why I was upset that Lily said that boys mow the lawn and not girls. In the ninth grade we were given a comprehensive test which had to be passed before we could graduate from high school. One component of the test was we had to write a proper paragraph. I of course failed because my topic sentence was about one thing and my paragraph was about another, see above paragraph. It makes sense to me. Hopefully it will make sense to you too. I am sure they would fail me on my paragraph writing skills aga...

My Little Feminist /sarcasm
2008-03-29 15:38:00
After driving Mandy to work this morning, and getting Lily settled down with some cartoons, I decided I should mow the lawn. I have a very brown thumb but I still am determined to have a nice yard. I told Lily I was going out to the back yard to mow and she told me, "girls don't mow, only boys mow"Lily out-climbs, out-runs, out-jumps, every boy on the playground. She may like to wear pink but she is a rough little girl. Where have I gone wrong, how have I failed? Where is my little feminist? I was so upset. I spent 45 minutes trying to get the mower to start, now I am blogging. Where are all the boys?Jeff is off at the Bataan Memorial Death March this weekend. Have fun baby, don't worry I will find a way to mow even if I have to go and buy an electric lawn mower. Why don't they just have a key starter like the car?I follow comments. Leave a comment and I will come visit your blog.

Charlotte Allen, pictured at left, a contributing writer to such well-read publications as the Washington Post, the Dallas News, The Atlantic, The Los Angeles Times, finds herself in the middle of a conflagration caused by her own writing. The topic? Her analysis of female Obamaniacs and how the seeming mental dimness of groupie behavior leads her to conclude women, ?. . . could shriek and swoon and gossip and read chick lit to our hearts' content and not mind the fact that way down deep, we are . . . kind of dim.? (From the Washington Post article published Sunday, Mar. 3, entitled, ?We Scream, We Swoon. How Dumb Can We Get??)Allen has published articles defending the sexist comments of the previous Harvard University President, Lawrence Summers, when he referred to what he presumed to be mathematical deficiencies in the minds of the female sex by way of explaining why so few women choose academia in the sciences. Is the 2008 presidential election bad for feminism?
2008-02-27 18:52:00
I hear you out there--wondering if I'm crazy. How can having a smart and accomplished woman a hair's breadth away from the Democratic nomination be bad for feminism? How can having America's ingrained gender prejudices dragged into the light be bad for feminism? I'll tell you how:The 2008 presidential election could be bad for feminism because as it has put a capable woman in the national spotlight and uncovered gender bias, it has also revealed and given voice to the prejudices of mainstream feminism. And those prejudices are alienating women who passionately want equality.I firmly believe that marginalized groups--women, people of color, GLBT folks, immigrants, etc.--ought to have uncommon empathy for each other and should work together towards the common goal of equality. That's why I am saddened when I hear some of my black sisters and brothers spouting homophobic rhetoric, and equally distressed when I see how some in the white gay community have embraced the patently offen...

Feminism barefoot in the kitchen
2008-02-16 04:40:00
© Mrs. Flinger 2007. I’ve been rolling around ideals about my identity for some time now. Struggling with my decision to stay at home. Struggling with the images I put in my daughter’s head. Struggling with a place for a strong, empowered woman in a traditional home context. I’m educated, I’m strong, I’m willful. I’m also a woman who cries, gets irrational and stays home to clean the house and care for her children. And I no longer think these things are mutually exclusive. I’ve recently started reading The Red Tent and find the role of women almost empowering. The community of females working together to care for the families; The work, actual hard labor, it requires to be in this role of caregiver: That alone is empowering. But to find a group of women, online and in person, who share your views, help raise your children, walk through life with you: that is where empowerment becomes confidence. And while I appreciate, and admi...

Altruism Does Not Exist
2008-02-11 11:59:00
The other day I brought up this theme to three people. Two left the room, one with a hurt look on her face, the other slamming down a book on the table and shouting. That left one male, and I succeeded in slowly pissing him off over the next hour or two. I talked to a female friend about this theme tonight and she stormed off too, saying she had to go to sleep.I'm off to an excellent start, but I've only pissed off four people. That's a piss-poor showing, but the theme shows great promise as a provocation. This blog has 800 readers a day, and if I can toss this theme out there and piss off even a small number of them, I can sleep well tonight. Here is my notion: altruism simply does not exist. Along the same lines, everyone uses everyone. If you don't like the term "using", we may substitute the term "utilizing". I really love this theme, because people are always fretting about being used. Suppose you were a millionaire - all your friends would be using you, including those armi...

For some reason, I have been curiously affected by the death of Heath Ledger. I don't know why because I would hardly describe myself as a fan. I knew almost nothing about his life, professional or personal, but I do remember being profoundly moved by his performance as Ennis del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain". In fact, I came out of the cinema sobbing, mascara running down my cheeks. It's quite amazing that someone so young (he was only twenty-five at the time) could interpret a character in such a sensitive, emotionally nuanced way. Maybe I was upset then because Ennis del Mar, tight-lipped and emotionally repressed, reminded me so much of own father (although, as far as I know, my father wasn't taking it up the arse from a neighbouring dairy farmer - mind you, if he was, I really wouldn't be surprised. Anything could happen in the wilds of Ayrshire). My father was also a coward, like Ennis, unable to access his true feelings or stand up for himself or me when my mother went on o...
