Let's talk about queer, feminist sex
2009-07-14 19:58:00
Did you ever think you could be watching a sexy video at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (800 S. Halsted Ave.)? Today would have been one of your first opportunities to do so, with the screening of Filming Desire as part of the free film series SEX POSITIVE pro-SEX, pro-QUEER, pro-KINK that's happening every Tuesday through October 13.Filming Desire is a documentary about female directors and the way they portray sex and sexual relationships on screen. Some of those interviewed include Sally Potter (Orlando)  and my personal favorite, Catherine Breillat. There are elements of feminism, queerness and all around sex-positive discussions from women who aren't afraid to show what they want on camera — the kind of women whose movies...

Feminist Carnivals
2008-11-13 21:10:00
I found out yesterday that my Access to Feminism post, about (dis)ableism in the feminist community has been featured in the 68th Carnival of Feminists. They have randomly called me Penny, but that doesn't matter, it's nice they spotted and included my post. The issue does need to be brought out into the open. There are some other interesting posts in the Carnival. What a crazy random happenstance talks about Feminist Dealbreakers - what constitutes a 'dealbreaker' in the relationships in her life. Behaviours or attitudes which force an end to a relationship with someone. For her, it can be people who claim to be feminist pro-lifers, for instance. Reading the post, and the discussion continues in the lengthy comments section, got me thinking. I realised I have different deal-breakers depending on who the person is! Most notably if they are new to my life I deal break quickly and firmly, for instance someone being anti-choice or pro-pornstitution writes them off instantly), wherea...

US university honour anti-feminist icon Mrs Schalfly
2008-05-20 02:50:00
(The Straits Times May 19, 2008)A top US university, Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, honoured 83-year-old Phyllis Schalfly, a mother of six children, who heads one of the most successful anti-feminist organisations in the United States. She founded it in 1972 as she mobilised thousands of people in a successfuly campaign to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment, which was meant to guarantee equal rights under the law for Americans, regardless of sex.She argued that it would deny a woman's right to be supported by her husband and "lead to women being drafted by the military and to public unisex bathrooms."She continues to write columns and deliver lectures on college campuses, setting off controversy with her open call for legal distinctions between the rights of men and women.Last year, she called for a ban on women holding the positions of firefighter, solider and construction worker and argued that a woman cannot claim to have been raped by her husband."By getting married...
Is gender feminist just a synonym for weak?
2008-05-17 23:38:00
Ever notice a gender feminist. a/k/ cow.  that had mind of her own, or actually took a stand to improve the lot of women?  Neither have I.   The cows were out in force in St Louis, Kavita Kumar,, STLtoday, “Hundreds turn back on Schlafly at ceremony” ST. LOUIS — Some felt the silent protest with white armbands and the dramatic turning of backs was disrespectful. But those who took part said it was a fitting way to show their disapproval that Washington University was honoring a woman whose views and life’s work they strongly disagree with. For her part, Phyllis Schlafly, the 83-year-old at the center of the controversy, said she thought it was “juvenile” of students who were “raining on their own parade.” But it didn’t ruin her moment, she said. At today’s commencement ceremony held on a sunny Brookings Quadrangle, Schlafly did not seem to notice the hundreds of backs turned to her while a citation heralding her accomplishments wa...

The Feminist Movement and its Contribution to the Modern Home (Part 2)
2008-05-14 06:01:00
The issue in the minds of most liberal women is the idea of equality. They feel that to be a housewife is a disgrace and that they should not have to subject themselves to that low degree. They feel that the position of housewife is a lower position and that they should not have any more responsibility to fulfill that role than should the husband. The problem they have is that the look at the proper Biblical role of women as a lesser position and the workforce as a higher position. This is twisted, corrupted thinking. The Biblical pattern provides for the care and love of women. It provides for them to be honored and exalted. Yet the modernist looks at it as the opposite. The workforce is a hard place and a hard path to go. It is a place that the husband should not want the wife to have to lower herself to. If God leads then the husband and wife will go that direction but usually God does not lead in that way and the husband should have a desire to deliver his wife from having to l...
The Feminist Movement and its Contribution to the Modern Home (Part 1)
2008-05-13 06:01:00
At the founding of America the home was the most important thing in a person?s life. Men bleed and died in order to prepare a land where they, their families, and their posterity could live in freedom and prosperity. They fought with their lives to protect and prosper their children, wives?? their families. Men worked hard to provide for the home, often working far more than eight hour shifts, far more than five days a week, far more than is the norm today. Women of the day were exalted, loved, and taken care of. These women loved their families and counted it a great honor to raise and rear children with godly principles of hard work and character. Women of these days didn?t look at being a housewife as a chore, but as a privilege. They loved their children to the point that they wanted to give all that they had to see them grow up to be men and women of character for the next generation.God?s design for the home is very similar to the way of life that was the accepted norm for the...
Mother Nature is not a feminist
2008-05-10 20:53:00
Why the cows, a/k/a the feminazi, a/k/a gender feminists are doomed.   Mother Nature is not a feminist.  The long explanation by John Derbyhire, National Review,: In biology, however, “fitness” is a term of art, a measure of how well an organism is adapted to its environment. Reproductive success is a pretty good measure of fitness, in this term-of-art sense. Thus if, as my reader seems to believe, dumb people have more kids than smart ones, then dumb people are fitter (in the biological sense) than smart people, by definition. They are better adapted to their environment. You might think that smart people are superior in some way to dumb people, but Ma Nature doesn’t agree with you. The only “superiority” She acknowledges is reproductive success. She also doesn’t insist that every species, in every environment, get smarter, faster, bigger, and stronger. If the demands of fitness decree that dumber, slower, smaller, and weaker bring reproducti...

I was a feminist once
2008-04-29 19:26:00
This post has been a long time coming. I have played with the words in my mind. I have written down scraps of feelings and bits of anger. I have created more rabid drafts and deleted them, more gentle drafts and thrown them away.Part of my hesitation was that in recent weeks so many women of color bloggers have laid it down so eloquently:Latoya Petersen at Racialicious here and here.Sudy at A Woman?s Ecdysis here and here (Hell, just read what Sudy?s been writing for the past week. It?s awesomely fierce.)The Angry Black Woman here.I also have been loathe to write this post because I wanted to believe that there was reconciliation to be had between the feminist movement and women of color. I wanted to believe that my split with feminism was temporary?sort of a cooling off period. I co-hosted the Women?s History Month blog carnival with Heart at Women?s Space so that we could all talk it out and come together. But I ended the carnival a lot less hopeful than I let on.Do I believe that...
Featured Article: The Feminist Revolution and The Last Age
2008-04-21 04:00:00
Note:The following article was first published on the 15th of August 2007.The Qur’an likened the creation of the male and the female to that of the ‘night’ and the ‘day’, implying that they complement each other “… like twin-halves of a whole.” But they are also functionally different; hence a successful and harmonious male-female relationship requires that the ‘day’ (i.e. the male) must function as ‘day’ and not try to become ‘night’, and similarly the ‘night’ (i.e., woman) must function as ‘night’ (which covers and conceals) and not try to become ‘day’. Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) ordered, “. . when a girl reaches the age of puberty nothing must be seen of her body except this and this (he pointed to the face and hands).” And so Muslim women have always covered themselves in Hijab—concealing arms, legs, bellies, head, hair, etc., in loose-fitting clothing.Since women have a basic function of bearing and rearing chi...

'The Feminist Porn Awards announce 2008's winners, and Violet Blue wants to
2008-04-15 08:04:00
From: WTF is feminist porn? Feminist porn. For many, seeing those words together is like putting together the words "comfortable flight," "lightly scented" and "Bill O'Reilly: journalist." We now have Jet Blue and Virgin America, not everyone can smell your panty liners, and there's no debate about the irony of the last bit ? but pretty much everyone wants to know, what the hell are porn and feminism doing in bed together? Some pretty nasty, kinky, shocking, and fun things, if the selections from this year's Feminist Porn Awards are any indication. The winners were announced April 7 and included local bondage model (and porn performer, producer, art gallery owner and self-identified feminist) Madison Young (madisonbound.com). Winning Hottest Kink Film for her debut film, the ultra-stylish Madison Bound Production "Bondage Boob Tube," Young summed up her stance on feminism, porn, sex work and the raging debate between anti-porn feminism and pro-porn feminists in h...

My Inner Feminist
2008-04-02 02:19:00
My husband is driving home as we speak. I can remember as a child how upset I always was that I was continuously being fed the message that women are inferior to men. Women's brains don't work as well because we are ruled by emotion and not reason. Our opinions are not valid because we just don't understand the way the world works. We are to be tolerated. We get all riled up over silly little things and therefore our being upset is not worthy of acknowledgment. I guess this is why I was upset that Lily said that boys mow the lawn and not girls. In the ninth grade we were given a comprehensive test which had to be passed before we could graduate from high school. One component of the test was we had to write a proper paragraph. I of course failed because my topic sentence was about one thing and my paragraph was about another, see above paragraph. It makes sense to me. Hopefully it will make sense to you too. I am sure they would fail me on my paragraph writing skills aga...
Heidi Montag Is A Feminist Icon
2008-04-01 22:29:00
Some TV critic over at the New York Times reviewed the season premiere of The Hills, lit up her pipe and referred to Heidi Montag as a "feminist". Gloria Steinem must have read that and shaved her head. Heidi is frothing with joy over this and responded. "I was very honored to be called a feminist hero," Heidi said. "It's a big deal to be even acknowledged, let alone complimented by The New York Times by such a profound, famous TV critic." Hee. Was the height of her feminism when she was rolling around on the beach letting the ocean splash over her plastic funbags as Spencer Pratt taped all the skank? She was on all fours, backing it up to the camera to sell her terrible single! She's Eleanor friggin' Roosevelt! Maybe it was when she shot to fame by feuding with another woman on a reality TV show. Because that's sisterhood. Seriously, she should be holding the N.O.W. banner at the head of the parade. All I want to do now is squat with her holding mirrors to our vaginas as...

My Little Feminist /sarcasm
2008-03-29 15:38:00
After driving Mandy to work this morning, and getting Lily settled down with some cartoons, I decided I should mow the lawn. I have a very brown thumb but I still am determined to have a nice yard. I told Lily I was going out to the back yard to mow and she told me, "girls don't mow, only boys mow"Lily out-climbs, out-runs, out-jumps, every boy on the playground. She may like to wear pink but she is a rough little girl. Where have I gone wrong, how have I failed? Where is my little feminist? I was so upset. I spent 45 minutes trying to get the mower to start, now I am blogging. Where are all the boys?Jeff is off at the Bataan Memorial Death March this weekend. Have fun baby, don't worry I will find a way to mow even if I have to go and buy an electric lawn mower. Why don't they just have a key starter like the car?I follow comments. Leave a comment and I will come visit your blog.

I really enjoy your blog too! Feminist discussions are important to insensitive guys like me, but the irony is I'm too sensitive to frequent the places where such discussions happen. I love that you've been working hard on the many questions that transgender people bring for so long. Most questions are hard and so require time to work out. Your pointing to blog wars also says something about the commitment it takes to deal with hard questions.I deplore online bullying, threats and violence. But I also am uncomfortable sometimes with pleas for niceness that would undermine vigorous argument. So your willingness to roll up your sleeves and argue is an inspiration.Gender is a difficult subject and so is sexuality. It's great your blog is so far ranging because it allows guys like me an entry into a world of important human questions. My life has been enriched by being involved with male forums which include transgender men.

Charlotte Allen's WashPost Anti-Feminist Column Causes Firestorm

I first learned about Charlotte Allen's controversial column in a response writen by Alex Leo in the Huffington Post and titled "Charlotte Allen Is a Bigot", which is bound to get anyone's attention. But before I jumped on the Anti-Charlotte bandwagon, I figured I'd do two things: 1) read her column and 2) contact her.I did both.I got this response from Charlotte, who was kind enough to take the time to write back. Proposing to a man, How to fake being a feminist, and Extreme Brides
2008-02-29 16:00:00
Happy leap year everyone! So today is the only day of the year that women are "permitted" to propose to a man, according to ancient folklore. So on that note, the Times UK has a good piece today called What happen when the woman proposes. According to the article, this is a trend that might pick up speed. ?I expect that more women than ever will be proposing in 2008,? says Dr Sheri Jacobson, a relationship counsellor at Harley Therapy in London. ?I think that attitudes are shifting and there's more room for women to assert themselves.? How much more room can there be? ?Women might seize on this chance to propose if they were already entertaining the idea and either want to get things moving quicker, use it to express their deep affection, or feel they want to take charge.? Perhaps that's true. But most women I know won't even ask a guy out or call to confirm a date. What do you all think? Would you first a) Ask a guy out or b) Propose to a guy?

Feminist Video Art as Forerunner to Postmodernism
2008-02-14 18:05:00
