Garden Gate, Fence and Bench Made from Tree Limbs
2009-07-14 06:46:00
Whenever I see the remains of trees that have fallen or been cut down my mind immediately starts wondering what I can turn them into in the garden. The inspiration rarely leads to anything beyond those few moments where I envision, a bench, fence or trellis made from twigs and branches at home in my garden. A couple of years ago I even hauled home two tree stumps that I was going to turn into a chair and side table. The stumps still sit in the backyard waiting for me to get around to them. I'm a big fan of rustic garden art and structures, I'm just no good in the building area. Here are items I've seen around Chicago that...
INK BLAST | SINCE YOU ASKED?HOW TO FIX THE PESKY U.S./MEXICO BORDER PROBLEM
2009-03-10 17:47:00
Recently I was online filling out an application for a foreign affairs fellowship sponsored by a top government entity. After the usual who/what/where/when questionnaire, I was taken to a page with four essay-style questions. In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that I have not written essay-like answers to anything, beyond winding personal emails from my closest friends, since I applied for graduate school ten years ago. But being a professional writer, I was unfazed by the prospect of some thought-provoking and intellect-tickling inquiry.

Fences 101: Know What Kind of Fence Your Yard Needs
2008-09-01 15:56:00
Fences make your garden not just lovely, but also protected from intruders and unwanted visitors. They also set the limits of your land?s territory and give space for pedestrian pathways. Fences also partition your land and maximize the space that you have to be used on different things. But what kind of fence do ...

Don't Fence Me In
2008-05-09 17:17:00
Don't fence me in...Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above, Don't fence me in. Let me ride through the wide open country that I love, Don't fence me in. Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze, And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees, Send me off forever but I ask you please, Don't fence me in. Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle Underneath the western skies. On my Cayuse, let me wander over yonder Till I see the mountains rise. I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses And I can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences Don't fence me in.
Border Fence Horrors
2008-05-06 09:06:00
Border-fence dispute snares rare jaguars - CNN.com Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told Congress that the agency continues to talk to some 600 landowners along the border to get their input. But in order to comply with the congressional mandate, he said, there is no time to deal with "unnecessary delays caused by administrative processes or potential litigation."After reading the article above you may or may not be in the least bit concerned. I guess it depends on whether you give a damn about the natural flora and fauna of the US. If you do care enough to believe that the government shouldn't be able to arbitrarily wave environmental laws, then I suggest you contact either Defenders of Wildlife or the Sierra Club, and get in on the conversation.I you are the type of person who believes that the environment must bend to the will of people, and that our security is worth the destruction of a few species, then I would first like to say that you are very shortsighted, ...

Somebody get Art Bell or George Norry on the line. Better yet, just get Bowman. He’ll know what this is all about: Witches - The best home videos are here Flying Witches or Too Much Tequila? SENSATIONAL sightings of a flying HUMAN above the skies of Mexico could be genuine, says a paranormal expert. The mysterious woman-like figure was caught on camera as it hovered above mountains in Nuevo Leon city. UFO watchers said the figure appeared to be wearing a cape leading to claims that it was a witch or wizard when it was first seen in 2006. Now Mexico?s leading Ufologist Anna Luisa Cid says the sightings were true after carrying out her own investigations. Well, if the “leading Ufologist” is convinced, that’s good enough for me. Chertoff Lied About BLM Report on Border Fence
2008-04-28 05:30:00
FENCE WOULD CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGEDemands are finally being made to force Michael Chertoff to either resign or be removed from his position as the Secretary of Homeland Security.  It is possible the man has a track record of not telling the truth. Last September BLM officials informed Michael Chertoff that the proposed border fence would cause irreparable damage to the fragile San Pedro aquifer and the Riparian sanctuary.  Evidently Chertoff LIED about the information the BLM gave to him and just went on as planned, ignoring the Constitution of the US. “…Yet when U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael ...
"Virtual" Border Fence Plan Being Scrapped Deemed Worthless

Border Patrol?s virtual fence canceled for not being as good as a fence
2008-04-24 07:58:00
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsThe last we heard of DHS's "Project 28" plan to build a 28-mile stretch of virtual fencing along the US / Mexico border in Arizona, it had been postponed until at least 2011 because the towers didn't quite work. Well, it appears that on further review, the system is even more of a total failure, and it's being scrapped entirely: according to Kelly Good, deputy director of the administration's Secure Border Initiative program, Project 28 "hasn't come close" to meeting Border Patrol's goals. Tests of the virtual fence didn't lead to nearly as many arrests as designers had hoped, and the lag from sensor detection to transmission of an image to border agents was apparently a big part of the problem. Boeing, which won the $860M contract to build the system, is now being told to replace it all with upgraded towers, but there's no word on when that's happening or what it'll cost taxpayers on top of the $20M already paid out. We're expecting trillion-dol...

Homeland Stupidity Cutting Virtual Fence
2008-04-23 22:48:00
Good thing they are serious about protecting the borders TUCSON, Arizona — The government will replace its highly touted “virtual fence” on the Arizona-Mexico border with new towers, radars, cameras and computer software, scrapping the brand-new $20 million system because it doesn’t work sufficiently, officials said. The move comes just two months after Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff officially accepted the completed fence from The Boeing Co. With the decision, Customs and Border Protection officials are acknowledging that the pilot program to detect illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border doesn’t work well enough to keep or to continue tweaking. Hmm. This is the same federal government that Hillary and Snob-amessiah want to place in charge of health care? Please. I’d yammer on about the inefficiencies and idiocy of the federal procurement and development methods, but, I reckon you already understand them. If they were serious...
Immigration Virtual Fence, A Very Real Headache For Boeing
2008-04-23 18:16:00
Just two months after Homeland Security head honcho Michael Chertoff extolled the wonderful test project of the Virtual Border Fence prototype near Tucson, Arizona. The project has been scrapped. The fence consisted of 9 towers constructed along a 28 mile length of the Arizona/Mexico boarder. Armed with all sorts of exotic gadgetry this virtual fence was ...
Virtual fence on Mexican border deemed insufficient
2008-04-23 17:09:00
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The government is scrapping a $20 million prototype of its highly touted “virtual fence” on the Arizona-Mexico border because the system is failing to adequately alert border patrol agents to illegal crossings, officials said. The move comes just two months after Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced his approval of the fence ...
Retired generals - not the neutral fence-sitters we all thought...
2008-04-21 21:16:00
The day’s big media story belongs to David Barstow and his epic NYT story, Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand, on the Bush administration’s hearts and minds campaign.Yes, retired generals on army pensions and with a lifetime of military service turn out not to have been the neutral thumb-suckers we all assumed they’d been transformed into when they took the network shilling.OK, so that is a bit mean given the weight of material Barstow has assembled.Still, Terry Heaton is unimpressed and throws in George Creel’s illuminating 1920 account of life running the Committee on Public Information - the Pentagon propaganda machine in WW1 - the modestly titled How We Advertised America. In case you don’t have a copy, here is Creel explaining his mission in terms that even Torie Clarke might find a tad over-enthusiastic: What we had to have was no mere surface unity, but a passionate belief in the justice of America’s cause that should weld the people of the United States...

Feds Upset Illegal Immigrants Walking Through Holes In Border Fence
2008-04-12 23:14:00
How about we do something about this? This is ridiculous! Illegal immigrants armed with torches, hacksaws, ladders and even bungee cords are making it around a section of the border fence hailed as the most efficient way to stop them.In the 10 months since the section was put up, the only method federal agents haven't seen is a tunnel — "Yet," said Victor Guzman, the supervisory Border Patrol agent responsible for the stretch of close-together 15-foot cement-filled steel poles planted three feet into the ground.Agents responsible for guarding the stretch of border here "almost immediately" started seeing cuts in the fence. The towering gray and rust colored posts are marked with bright orange spray paint in areas believed to have been breached, Guzman said.Guzman, who has worked in the area for nearly a decade, said agents have found holes cut with acetylene torches, hacksaws and even plasma torches — a high-powered tool that uses inert gas or condensed air to quickly cut throu...
