Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan, in English), Ferdinand Magellan and his crew were the first Europeans to enter the Pacific from the eponymous Strait of Magellan, which he discovered. They were also the first Europeans to reach the archipelago of what is now known as the Philippines, which was unknown to the western world before their landing. Arab traders had established commerce within the archipelago centuries earlier. The Portuguese maritime explorer was one of the first individuals to cross all the meridians of the globe, at the service of Spain (the Portuguese king refused to finance the voyage) and led the first successful attempt at world circumnavigation.He was the first man to lead an expedition sailing westward from Europe to Asia and to cross the Pacific Ocean (which he named ?pacífico?, meaning ?peaceful?). What a great achievement it was! He died during the Battle of Mactan, in the Philippines, this very same day, April 27, 488 years ago.

I actually didn't need much to cheer me up on the way to work today. Not only did the commute go reasonably well -- maybe most people are taking today off, because it's a Friday and they've finally realized the brilliance of the point I made here? -- but more importantly, I watched CNNHLNNFLAFLCIO before I left, and because of that, I was lucky enough to see the news report on the woman whose hair weave saved her life after she was shot at.Then, even before I could be skeptical of that (because the bullet went through a window and so was slowed down and probably deflected before the hair weave needed to do its job) my inherent nature was itself deflected by the witness they interviewed on CNNHLN2b2gether4ever, who gave me this rallying cry for Friday:"Thank God for hair weaves."And it wasn't even so much what she said as the way she said it; she was sincere and effusive. She really meant it. I respect that.Commutation 7 here.

I cannot understand why Carrick hasnt been included in the England squad. There are four United players in the 31 man squad ( Brown, Ferdinand, Hargreaves and Rooney). Last week United defender Rio Ferdinand captained England, this week it has been revealed that Ferdinand is close to signing a new contract with United. This contract is thought to be a deal that will keep the defender at the club for the rest of his football career.Ferdinand has been an important part of United?s defence. There were around 32 international matches last night and here is a round up of how the Manchester United players did:Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves all started for England but they all had different matches. Rooney only played the first half as the main striker but he was given the same role as Fernando Torres is given at Liverpool and that doesnt suit him, i honestly dont think that Rooney can play upfront on his own. Brown had a night to forget, at one point it looked like David Beckham was playing at right back and Brown was playing at the right midfield. Ferdinand had a good, strong match but at the last 15/20 minutes it looked like he was carrying an injury.
