Monday, December 29th, 2008: Aweigh with the ferries of Helsingborg
2008-12-29 13:50:00
What I think:After yet another successful gig at Trappa Upp in Höganäs (more on that later), we in the blues/rock cover band CSI: Helsingborg decided to have a Pissed Rehearsal tonight.A Pissed Rehearsal is a rehearsal to which we bring loads of beer, and get drunk while playing. The logic behind this is that we will always have a good few beers before (and during) performing live, so we might as well get used to playing drunk. Having said this, I always drink beer at rehearsals anyway. But the others don't usually drink much. Except for CSI: Nils; we usually meet at Charles Dickens before rehearsals and down a couple there. We also usually invite friends to our Pissed Rehearsals, and end up having quite a little party. You'd like these things, I'm sure.In any case (of beer), I needed to pick up a case (of beer) for the Pissed Rehearsal. Rather than go to the state-owned, over-priced, horrible alcohol monopoly Systembolaget, we in Helsingborg have a great little perk: the ferry.I ...

Flip-through: Brussels, Ferries, Notre Dame, and Ryanair madness
2008-06-06 18:28:00
Some of the stories that grabbed our attention this week: Brussels and Bruges Back from his trip to Belgrade for the Eurovision song contest, Alex of Spendthrift Shoestring jaunted off to Brussels on the Eurostar to see how the city has changed since his last visit in 2002. We enjoyed his musings on the city’s neighborhood and vibe, having just visited Brussels in March. And yes, Alex, we also have a fondness for the Use-It fold-out maps to Brussels (and five other Belgian cities). These map-guides are, according to their creators, ”no-non-sense, non commercial, made by locals,” and thus offer some candid (and amusing!) advice. When we visited Bruges, we “Used-It” nightly to find the city’s cool restaurants, bars, and cafes. You can print your own guide off from their website. European Ferries BudgetTravel.com reminded us yesterday to consider taking ferries between European cities. Ferries offer a fun and cheap transportation option around muc...
Free Amsterdam: Gardens, art, ferries, conversation
2008-05-05 17:34:00
Looking for ways to save some euros while visiting Amsterdam? Here are five suggestions: Try some flower power. Visiting the masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum will set you back €10, but the baroque and renaissance gardens behind it are free to stroll. Delight in the fountains, statues, and the carefully coiffed hedges and plants. The gardens are open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. Baroque gardens are closed on the weekends. (Note: The Rijksmuseum is undergoing extensive renovations that are scheduled to last until 2010. Until then, visitors may visit a scaled down “best of” collection entitled ”Th-e Masterpieces.”) Pick up a passport to paintings.  Speaking of the Rijksmuseum, we’re flying high about the joint venture between the museum and Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schipol, an art space at the airport maintained by the museum, offers annual exhibits free of charge. This year, an impressive collection of Van ...
Calmac Ferries 'Bah Humbug'
2007-12-17 11:20:00
At this time of year Calmac Ferries usually offer a discount travel from the Western Isles to the mainland. I have just phoned them this morning and they have said No not this year! The last 3 years they have offered a discounted ticket for a car and two passengers so that islanders could do their Christmas shopping on the mainland. Have the islands 'Bible Bashers' with their attack on Sunday sailings scuppered this for all us non believers or those that want Sunday sailings. It will be interesting to see what the Stornoway Gazette has to say on the subject. So it looks like I am going to have to pay £142.80 to go and get my Christmas shopping talk about rip off! GRRRRR Maybe it has something to do with the Scottish Executive wanting to reduce the cost in the coming years by the introduction of RET.

Free ferries to the Scottish Islands?
2007-05-29 10:15:00
As the newly elected Scottish Executive plans to scrap tolls on the Forth and Tay road bridge there have been calls to abolish fares on ferries to the Scottish islands.  I suppose it is a logical progression, if you can cross a body of water free in the central belt of Scotland why not ...

Greek ferries information
2007-04-19 11:39:00
I came across this site which has links to all the Greek ferries. A great resource is you are thinking of island hopping in Greece. When I travelled around the islands in the 1978 it was really difficult to get information about the ferry timetables. You’d ask at the tourist office and then ...
Stena Line Ferries
2007-04-11 19:35:00
Silence! Silence at the back! Please will you all join me in prayer: “Oh dear God. All powerful and swift to punish. I know we have sinned but please save us from the terrible cruelty placed upon us by Stena Line. They who think 50 year old marketing men can capture a new, young audience by ...
P&O Ferries, National Express Coaches and CheapFlights.co.uk Come Onboa
2007-04-04 10:59:00
Today we're pleased to announce that we've signed up three major new clients, P&O Ferries, National Express Coaches and CheapFlights.co.uk. All of them are keen to see what works best for conversions on their front pages. We're looking forward to working with these new clients to deliver increased conversion rates. For readers outside of the UK, National Express are our main inter-city coach operator over here, a bit like Greyhound in the States and Austrailia. P&O ferries are one of our main ferry companies whilst CheapFlights.co.uk are a leading flight price comparison site. All of these three have a target of increasing conversions (ticket sales for two and quality clickthroughs to partners for CheapFlights) but as we covered in our last entry, Maxymiser can also be used to optimise other actions such as registrations or even the time spent reading a site. I've hyperlinked each so you can find out more about the kinds of companies we're working with. Maxymiser isn't restrict...
