Ferrofluid: Liquid Magnets
2007-11-15 11:03:00 A ferrofluid (from the Latin ferrum, meaning iron) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. It is a colloidal mixture comprising extremely small magnetic particles suspended in a synthetic oil. The particles are coated with a a soap or detergent to prevent them from clumping together. - WikiPedia

FerroFluid gets even more amazing! Full on moving art
2007-04-20 16:22:00 You guys might remember about 3 months back i posted a link to making your own ferrofluid, for those that missed it ferrofluid is a liquid that has special magnetic properties and reacts directly to magnetic fields, but recently with a new technique called "ferrofluid sculptures" they have taken the concept to a whole new level, as seen to the right and in the video below. Basically what they are doing to accomplish these amazingly beautiful designs are by extending the magnets iron core and actually sculpting it using a lathe into a shape, in this case a cone, when the electromagnetic force is applied to the iron core, the ferrofluid leaps to action spinning upward and outward around the irons core, filling the magnetic field and maintaining the shape. The iron cones for this specific sculpture were design helical so that the fluid can move to the top of the tower like a ramp once the magnetic field is strong enough. Ferrofluid is an amazing thing, but the fact they have taken it t...
